Features of Indus Valley Civilization:
·         Cities were divided into two parts i.e. Upper town(west), also known as Citadel (i.e. fortified) and Lower Town(east).
·         Red pottery painted with designs in black.
·         Copper, bronze, silver, gold present.
·       Bodies were buried in wooden coffins, but during the later stages ‘H symmetry culture’ evolved where bodies were buried in painted burial urns.
·    Efficient town planning with streets running from North-South and East-West directions, cutting each other at right angle.
·         Northern-most site- Manda (J&K).
·         Southern-most site- Daimabad (Maharashtra).
·         Eastern-most site- Alamgirpur (UP).
·         Western-most site- Sutkagendor (Pakistan).
·         Important Ports towns: Lothal , Surkotada , Dholavira
·         Mature Harappan phase: c. 2600 – 1900 BCE.
·         Largest Harappan site in India is Rakhigarhi in Haryana.

1. INDIA AND RUSSIA STARTED  JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE IN VLADIVOSTOK
i. The 8th edition of the Indo-Russia joint military exercise ‘Indra 2016’ was started  in Vladivostok in Russia.
ii. Indra  is a biannual exercise which has been carried out between the two allies since 2003.

2.COMMITTEES FOR THE BIRTH CENTENARY OF PANDIT DEENDAYAL UPADHYAY
i. The PM, Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the formation of two committees for the commemoration of the birth centenary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay.
ii. The Prime Minister will chair a 149 member National Committee, and the Home Minister, Shri Rajnath Singh, will chair a 23 member Executive Committee.

3. ARUN GOYAL APPOINTED ADDITIONAL SECRETARY IN GST COUNCIL
i. Senior IAS officer Arun Goyal has been appointed as Additional Secretary in the Goods and Services Tax  Council.
ii. The Council, headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, is formed to decide on tax rate, exempted goods and the threshold limit.

4. WORLD’S LARGEST RADIO TELESCOPE BUILT IN CHINA
i. China has built world’s largest radio telescope nicknamed Tianyan known as Heavenly Eye” or “The Eye of Heaven.
ii. It has started its operation and is part of China’s drive to become a science powerhouse.
iii. It is located in the Dawodang depression a natural basin in Pingtang County in the Guizhou Province, Southwest China.
iv. It is the world’s largest single dish radio telescope and the second largest radio telescope after the Russian RATAN-600, which has a sparsely filled aperture.

5. MISSION PARIVAR VIKAS TO BE LAUNCHED IN SEVEN STATES FOR IMPROVED FAMILY PLANNING SERVICES
i.The Union Health Ministry has decided to launch Mission Parivar Vikas in seven states for improved family planning services.
ii. Its main objective is to accelerate access to high quality family planning choices based on information, reliable services and supplies within a rights-based framework.
iii. The key strategic focus area of this initiative will be on improving access to contraceptives through delivering assured services, dovetailing with new promotional schemes and  ensuring commodity .

1.INDIA AND  FRANCE INKED DEAL FOR 36 RAFALE FIGHTER JETS
i. India and France  inked the 7.8-billion Euro deal for 36 Rafale fighter jets.
ii.The aircraft will be equipped with latest missiles and weapon system like Meteor and Scalp.
iii.The 7.8 billion Euro deal is crucial for the Indian Air Force and is expected to give India the dominant status in the air
iv.The Rafale jet has a strategic weapon has Beyond Visual Range  Meteor air-to-air missile with a range in excess of 150 kilometre.

2. JUNAID AHMAD APPOINTED AS WORLD BANK COUNTRY DIRECTOR FOR INDIA
i.Junaid Ahmad has been appointed as the World Bank Country Director for India.
ii. He will replace  succeed Onno Ruhl.

3. DEMOCRATS AND DISSENTERS AUTHORED BY RAMACHANDRA GUHA RELEASED
I. Book titled Democrats and Dissenters authored by Ramachandra Guha was released .

i. Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani has topped the Forbes' '100 Richest Indians' list.
ii. India's richest pharmaceutical magnate Dilip Shanghvi remains at 2nd.

6. RITU RANI RETIRES FROM INTERNATIONAL HOCKEY
i. Former Indian women's hockey captain Ritu Rani has announced her retirement from international hockey.
ii. The 24-year-old midfielder made the announcement in a mail to Hockey India president Narinder Batra.

1. INDIA, US, AFGHANISTAN REAFFIRMS SHARED INTEREST IN COMBATING TERRORISM
i. India, United States and Afghanistan have reaffirmed their shared interests in combating terrorism and advancing peace and security in the region.
ii. They have exchanged views on the situation in Afghanistan and on regional issues of mutual interest.
iii.They welcomed the discussions focused on economic, political and development goals in Afghanistan including the regional dimension.

2. NAVTEJ SARNA APPOINTED AMBASSADOR TO THE US
i. The Union Government has appointed Navtej Sarna  as Ambassador to the United States.
ii. Navtej Sarna  is an Indian Foreign Service  officer of the 1980 batch.
iii. He also served as India’s ambassador to Israel from 2008 to 2012.

3. UNION GOVERNMENT APPOINTS THREE ECONOMISTS TO MONETARY POLICY COMMITTEE
i. The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has appointed three economists as the external appointees on the Monetary Policy Committee.
ii.They are Pami Dua, Chetan Ghate and Ravindra Dholakia.
iii. They will work to decide interest rates.
iv.Monetary Policy Committee under the RBI will decide monetary policy by setting interest rates.
v. It aims to bring significant changes in the power the RBI governor while deciding interest rates.

4. ECONOMIC FREEDOM OF THE WORLD 2016 REPORT RELEASED
i.India's Centre for Civil Society in collaboration with Canada's Fraser Institute released the Economic Freedom of the World 2016 Annual Report.
ii.The report is based on data from 2014 and measures the World Economic Freedom  Index by analysing the policies and institutions of 159 countries and territories.
iii.Hong Kong topped the index followed by Singapore and New Zealand at second and third position.

5. ADB APPROVES 631 MILLION US DOLLARS LOAN FOR VISAKHAPATNAM-CHENNAI INDUSTRIAL CORRIDOR
i. The Asian Development Bank approved 631 million US dollars loan for construction of industrial corridor between Visakhapatnam and Chennai.
ii. It is India's first coastal industrial corridor running from West Bengal to Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.
iii.The fund will help develop the first key 800-km section of the planned 2500-km East Coast Economic Corridor
