1.   DRAFT REPORT OF R V EASWAR COMMITTEE TO SIMPLIFY INCOME-TAX ACT, 1961 RELEASED
i.    Union Ministry of Finance released the draft report of Justice R V Easwar  Committee to simplify the provisions of Income-tax Act, 1961.
ii.   Highlights of the draft report
a.      Amendment to Section 255(3) to increase the monetary limit for Single Member Bench cases before the Tribunal to rupees 1 crore from the present rupees 15 lakhs
b.     Amendment to Section 254(2) to reduce the time-limit for rectification of orders of the Tribunal from  four years to 120 days
c.      Deletion of section 143(1D) – Avoiding undesirable delay in issue of refunds
d.     Recommendations to promote ease of doing business and simplify procedures-
e.      Tax deduction at source rates for individuals and Hindu undivided families  to be reduced to 5 percent as against the present 10 percent
f.        Amendment to section 234C to provide relief where a new business is started during the financial year

2.   WORLD BANK TO FUND 20 MILLION US DOLLAR FOR RECONSTRUCTING INDIRA GANDHI ZOOLOGICAL PARK
i.    The World Bank  decided to give an assistance of 20 million US dollar to reconstruct the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park .
ii.   The park was  devastated during cyclone Hudhud in October 2014 in Visakhapatnam.
iii.  It is for the first time that World Bank  is directly involved in a zoo.

3.   BCCI BANNED AJIT CHANDILA & HIKEN SHAH FOR INVOLVEMENT IN 2013 IPL SPOT-FIXING SCANDAL
i.    The Board of Control for Cricket in Indiaannounced the orders in the cases  relating to the involvement of Ajit Chandila and Hiken Shah in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal.
ii.   Both of them are banned  by BCCI from cricket, Hiken Shah was banned for 5 years and Ajit Chandila  banned for life time from Cricket.
iii.  Both of them are declared  guilty of misconduct and corruption within various articles of the BCCI Anti Corruption Code.

4.   SOMNATH TEMPLE TO INVEST IN GOLD MONETISATION SCHEME
i.    The Somnath Temple is going  to become Gujarat’s first temple to deposit its idle gold in the Gold Monetisation Scheme .
ii.   The Temple has around 35 kg of gold of the temple.
iii. The Somnath temple located in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra on the western coast of Gujarat, India.

5.   UNION GOVERNMENT HELD FIRST NATIONAL STAKEHOLDER CONSULTATION ON BIOFIN PROJECT
i.    The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change held first national stakeholder consultation meeting on the Biodiversity Finance Initiative.
ii.   The meeting was organized to Explain and understand the BIOFIN project  for strengthening the biodiversity conservation efforts in the country.
iii.  Its purpose is to mobilise resources for biodiversity and sustainable development across the world.
iv. It was launched by the United National Development Programme in 2012.

6. DELHI ACERS DEFEATED MUMBAI ROCKETS TO CLINCH PREMIER BADMINTON LEAGUE TITLE
i.    Delhi Acers grabbed the Premier Badminton League  title at the Siri Fort Sports Complex in New Delhi.
ii.   Delhi acers won the title after defeating Mumbai Rockets.
iii. Premier Badminton League is  owned by the Badminton Association of India
iv.  Earlier  it was known as Indian Badminton League during its foundation on  2013.
v.   Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar is the brand ambassador of the league.

7.   FIRST INFECTED CASE OF  ZINKA VIRUS FOUNDED IN THE US
i.    First case of a mosquito borne virus called Zinka was founded in the US.
ii.   It was founded that the virus is spreading rapidly through the American continent.

iii. It is a virus that can make people sick with rash, fever and joint pain.

1. DINESH SHARMA ELECTED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF AIIB
i. Dinesh Sharma  was elected to the member board of directors of the China-sponsored Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank .
ii. China is the largest shareholder in AIIB followed by India as its second largest shareholder.
iii. Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank is an international financial institution that aims to support the building of infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region.
iv. The capital of the bank is 100 billion US dollars.

2. ANURADHA ROY WINS 2016 DSC PRIZE FOR SOUTH ASIAN LITERATURE
i. Indian writer Anuradha Roy has grabbed South Asian Literature prize for her novel ‘Sleeping on Jupiter’.
ii. She written her novel Sleeping on Jupiter regarding the violence against women with story revolving around girl named Nomi and is set in Jarmuli a city of temples.
iii. The literary prize awarded annually to writers of any nationality or ethnicity writing about South Asia on themes relating to its culture, history, politics or people.

3. TAIWAN ELECTED TSAI ING-WEN AS FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT
i. Tsai Ing-wen of Democratic Progressive Party  won a landslide victory in Taiwan's presidential election.
ii. She is the first women on the island as first female president.

4. NITI AAYOG COLLABORATED WITH IDFC FOR ENTERPRISE SURVEY OF MANUFACTURING FIRMS
i. NITI Aayog has collaborated with the IDFC Bank Ltd to conduct an enterprise survey of manufacturing firms.
ii. The primary objective of this Survey is to assess the business regulatory environment in each State and Union Territories.
iii. The another objective is to identify policy and regulatory hurdles faced by businesses in the States/UTs.

5. 61ST FILMFARE AWARDS PRESENTED IN MUMBAI
i. The 61st Filmfare Awards were presented at the Yash Raj Studios in Mumbai hosted by Shah Rukh Khan and comedian Kapil Sharma.

6. SANIA MIRZA, MARTINA HINGIS WON 2016 WTA APIA INTERNATIONAL SYDNEY TITLE
i. Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won WTA Apia International Sydney title of Tennis in the women’s doubles category in Sydney, Australia.
ii. Together they had won 11th title since 2015 including Indian Wells, Miami, Charleston, Wimbledon, US Open, Guangzhou, Wuhan, Beijing and the WTA Finals, Brisbane and Sydney.

1. ANTI-TANK MISSILE NAG TEST FIRED BY DRDO
i. The Defence Research and Development Organisation   has successfully test fired Nag anti tank missile in Rajasthan.
ii. The specialtiy of the missile is that it can be test  fired during night and day time.
iii. It is Featured with top attack capability to nullify the explosive reactive armour of a battle tank.

2. UNION GOVERNMENT LAUNCHED 4 MOBILE HEALTH SERVICES TO PROMOTE PUBLIC HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE
i. The Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare J P Nadda launched four mobile health services to provide citizen-centric health services.
ii. These mobile Health services are:
a.    Kilkari : It is an audio-based mobile service that delivers weekly audio messages to families about pregnancy, child birth and child care.
b.   Mobile Academy:  It is a mobile-based application aimed at providing training services to 9 million ASHAs.
c.    M-Cessation: It will be an IT-enabled tool to help tobacco users to quit tobacco.
d.   TB Missed Call initiative: Under TB Missed Call initiative a dedicated toll free number 1800-11–6666 which will provide round the clock counselling and treatment support services for TB patients.

3. SAHAYOG KAIJIN 2016’ BETWEEN INDIA AND JAPAN JOINT COAST GUARD EXERCISE
i. The bilateral exercise by the Indian Coast Guard and Japanese counterpart titled ‘Sahayog-Kaijin 2016’ has started in the coast of Chennai.
ii. Both countries will participate for Anti-piracy procedures, search and rescue operations and interoperability between the two forces and other areas of common professional interest.
iv. Sahayog-Kaijin bilateral exercise is a 15 year old exercise between two countries.

4. WORLD BANK RELEASED REPORT TITLED WORLD DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2016
i. A report named World Development Report 2016 “Digital Dividends” released by the World Bank in Washington DC, USA.
ii. The report explained the impact of the internet and mobile phone on economic development across the world including India.
iii. In this report Chief Economist of World Bank appreciated the Aadhaar scheme of  Indian government as it saved 1 billion US dollars by curbing corruption.

5. UNION GOVERNMENT INKS LOAN AGREEMENT WITH WORLD BANK FOR NEERANCHAL NATIONAL WATERSHED PROJECT
i. Union Government has signed a loan agreement with World Bank for the Neeranchal National Watershed Project to improve watershed management in rural rain fed areas.
ii. The loan credit will support the watershed activities of the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana in 9 states.
iii. Neeranchal National Watershed Project  is implemented by the Union Ministry of Rural Development from 2016 to 2021 to achieve objectives PMKSY.
iv. It aims to ensure Har Khet Ko Pani and for efficient use of water (Per Drop More Crop).

6. DELHI WRITER ANKITA ANAND WON THE LORENZO NATALI MEDIA PRIZE FOR WORK ON KHAP PANCHAYATS
i. A Delhi writer Ankita Anand won the European Commission's prestigious Lorenzo Natali Media Prize for 2015 in Asia and the Pacific amateur category.
ii. She grabbed the award for her important portrayal of life for young women facing the threat of the diktat of khap panchayats in Haryana.
iii. The Lorenzo Natali Media Prize is organized by the European Commission’s Directorate General for International Cooperation and Development since 1992.

iv. It is awarded to journalists for outstanding reporting on development and poverty eradication.

1. 68TH ARMY DAY CELEBRATED ON 15 JANUARY
i. India celebrated the 68th Army Day on 15th January to commemorate the day when Lieutenant General K M Cariappa became the 1st Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army in post independence period.
ii. He took over the command of Army from General Sir FRR Bucher, the last British Commander in Chief on 15 January 1949.

2. WHO DECLARES WORLD’S WORST EVER EBOLA OUTBREAK OVER
i. The World Health Organisation declared West Africa free from Ebola virus.
ii. Ebola was outbroken in December 2013 in the west Africa badly effecting Liberia as it killed 4809 people in the country.
iii. Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea were the badly affected nations in the region.
iv. Recently WHO declared Liberia, Sierra leone and Guinea  all ebola free in 2015.

3. US LIFT NUCLEAR SANCTIONS ON IRAN
i. United States has removed nuclear sanctions against Iran after it has agreed to roll back its nuclear programme.
ii. These sanctions were lifted after International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that Iran has agreed to its commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action  also known as  P5+1 countries.
iii. P5+1 include the five permanent members of the UN Security Council including USA, China, Russia, UK, France and non- permanent member Germany.

4. SBI LAUNCHED INDIA’S FIRST START-UP FOCUSED BANK BRANCH SBI INCUBE
i. India’s largest bank State Bank of India inaugurated India’s first start-up focused bank branch called SBI InCube in Bangalore, Karnataka.
ii. The specialized branch aims to understand and address banking needs of a Start-up Business.
iii. SBI InCube branch will work towards fulfilling the specific financial needs of the start-ups.

5. SIKKIM BECOMES INDIA'S FIRST FULLY ORGANIC STATE
i. Sikkim has become India's first fully organic state by utilizing 75,000 hectares of agricultural land into sustainable cultivation.
ii. The land is converted to organic land by implementing organic practices and principles as laid down in National Programme for Organic Production.
iii. Organic farming leads in subsistence of agriculture, bio-diversity conservation and environmental protection.
iv. Sustainable farming will also help in building the soil health resulting in sustainable increased crop production, he said.

6. FIRST 'MAHILA SQUAD' COMMISSIONED FOR HIGH-ALTITUTE
i. A contingent of 500 women personnel will become the first 'mahila' squad to be deployed in high-altitude posts along the India China border.
ii. The squad was commissioned into the Indo-Tibetan Border Police today in Panchkula.
iii. It is the first time that India is deploying women troops in the harsh climatic conditions along the India-China border.

7. MARAT SAFIN INDUCTED INTO INTERNATIONAL TENNIS HALL OF FAME
i. The Russian Tennis Federation announced former World No.1 tennis player Marat Safin joined the International Tennis Hall of Fame.
ii The International Tennis Hall of Fame honours players and contributors to the sport of tennis
iii. Martina Hingis became the first Global Ambassador for the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2015.

1. UNION CABINET APPROVES PRADHAN MANTRI FASAL BIMA YOJANA
i. The Union Cabinet has approved Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana a new crop insurance scheme.
ii. The scheme is launched to boost farming sector in the country.
iii. The scheme is aimed to reduce the premium burden on farmers and ensure early settlement of crop assurance claim for the full insured sum.
iv. Farmers will pay uniform premium of 2 per cent for all Kharif crops and 1.5 percent for all Rabi crops and the rest of the premium will be paid by Government.

2. KERALA BECOMES FIRST STATE TO ACHIEVE 100% PRIMARY EDUCATION
i. Kerala has become the first Indian state to achieve 100 per cent primary education.
ii. Kerala state was able to achieve 100 per cent primary education through its flagship primary education equivalency drive Athulyam Scheme.
iii. The scheme was meant to provide primary school education to people aged between 15 and 50

3. FIFA DISMISSED SECRETARY GENERAL JEROME VALCKE
i. The FIFA Emergency Committee dismissed Jerome Valcke from the position of FIFA Secretary General.
ii. He was suspended from football for his alleged involvement in a scheme to profit from the sale of World Cup tickets
iii. Earlier FIFA has suspended Sepp Blatter and Vice-president Michel Platini for eight years from football.

4. SUBHASHINI VASANTH HONOURED WITH NEERJA BHANOT AWARD
i. Bengaluru Subhashini Vasanth was honoured with Neerja Bhanot Award.
ii. She was given this award for her helping people in distress and for empowering widows of martyrs and their families across the country.
iii.  The  Neerja Bhanot Award was started in 1990 in the  honour of Senior Flight Purser, Neerja Bhanot, who saved hundreds of lives while sacrificing her own, during a at Karachi Airport in September 1986.

5. BOOK TITLED JAWAHARLAL NEHRU AND THE INDIAN POLITY IN PERSPECTIVE RELEASED BY HAMID ANSARI
i. Vice president Hamid ansari  a book named Jawaharlal Nehru and The Indian Polity in Perspective
ii. The Book explains the the role of Jawaharlal Nehru India’s first Prime Minister on shaping the polity of modern India.
iii. The book was edited by Prof Alexander.

6. 20TH NATIONAL YOUTH FESTIVAL INAUGURATED IN NAYA RAIPUR
i. The 20th National Youth Festival was inaugurated by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari at Rajyostav Sthal in Naya Raipur at Chhattisgarh.
ii. The national youth festival is inaugrated to mark the National Youth Day.
iii. The national youth festival is inaugurated on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

7. UNION CABINET APPROVED MOU BETWEEN INDIA AND MALDIVES FOR CO-OPERATION IN HEALTH SECTOR
i. The Union Cabinet headed by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave its approval for the Memorandum of Understanding between India and Maldives on co-operation in the field of health.
ii. The MoU was signed Manage f healthcare sector and public health services, providing aistance in development of human resources and setting up of health care facilities.

8. UNICEF PRESENTED DAVID BECKHAM WITH DANNY KAYE HUMANITARIAN LEADERSHIP AWARD
i. David Beckham  was presented with the Danny Kaye Humanitarian Leadership Award at the sixth biennial UNICEF Ball in Los Angeles.
ii. The award is given to him for his tireless work to save and improve the lives of children around the world.
iii. The Danny Kaye Humanitarian Leadership Award is named after Danny Kaye  one of the world’s most beloved entertainers.
iv. He was the first ever celebrity representative for UNICEF and was a Goodwill Ambassador.
