1. URBAN AREAS OF GUJARAT AND ANDHRA PRADESH DECLARED OPEN DEFECATION FREE
i.The Union Urban Development Ministry has declared urban areas of Gujarat and  Andhra Pradesh open defecation free .
ii.These are the first states to become open defecation free in urban areas.
iii.Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Kerala have achieved more than 90% of toilet construction in households.
iv.Open defecation means people defecate in open spaces such as fields, bushes, forests, open bodies of water rather than using the toilet.

2. JHARKHAND BECOMES FIRST STATE TO IMPLEMENT DBT IN KEROSENE
i.Jharkhand has become the first state in the country to implement Direct Benefit Transfer  in Kerosene Scheme.
ii. The scheme is being implemented in four identified districts of the state from 1st of October 2017.
iii. Under this scheme kerosene will be sold at non-subsidised price and the subsidy will be directly transferred to consumers directly into their bank accounts.

3. ELEPHANT RESEARCHER PRAJNA CHOWTA CONFERRED WITH KNIGHTHOOD BY FRANCE
I.Film-maker and elephant researcher Prajna Chowta has been appointed Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Mérite  by the French government.
ii.She has been conferred with the France’s one of the highest civilian recognitions in recognition of a life devoted to caring for wild Asian elephants.
Iii.This year businesswoman Kiran Mazumdar haw and actor Kamal Hassan were recognised under the French government’s Legion of Honour award
4. SUSHIL CHANDRA APPOINTED CBDT CHAIRMAN
i.The Union Government appointed Indian Revenue Service officer Sushil Chandra as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes .
ii.He will replacen Rani Singh Nair who will retire on 31 October 2016.
iii. The Central Board of Direct Taxes is the policy-making body of the Income Tax Department under the Union Finance Ministry.

1. UNION GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES INDIAN BRIDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
i.The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has launched the Indian Bridge Management System .
ii. It is launched to ensure safety of bridges in the country.
iii.It is being developed to create an inventory of all bridges in country and rate structural condition of the bridges.
iv.The rating will help for their timely repair and carrying rehabilitation work based on the criticality of the structure.

2. AADHAAR CARD MUST FOR LPG SUBSIDY AFTER NOVEMBER 2016
i.The Union Government has made Aadhaar card mandatory for availing cooking gas  subsidies after November 2016.
ii.The government gives 12 LPG cylinders at subsidised rates per household in a year.
iii.The subsidy on every LPG cylinder is transferred directly into bank accounts of individuals who then buy the cooking fuel at market rates.
iv.Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique number which acts as a proof of identity and address anywhere in the country and it is considered as the world’s largest national identification project.

3. RBI CUTS REPO RATE BY 25 BPS IN 4TH BI-MONTHLY MONETARY POLICY STATEMENT
i.The Reserve Bank of India  in its fourth bi-monthly monetary policy review for year 2016-17 has cut the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6.25%.
ii.This monetary policy decision was taken by the newly constituted Monetary Policy Committee.
iii. Policy Rates under new monetary [policy
a.       Repo rate Reduced by 0.25 basis points to 6.25 percent.
b.    Reverse repo rate adjusted to 5.75 per cent.
c.       Marginal standing facility and Bank Rate to 6.75 per cent.
d.    Cash Reserve Ratio changed at 4.0 per cent
e.       Statutory Liquidity Ratio to20.75 per cent.

4. BRITISH TRIO DAVID THOULESS, F DUNCAN M HALDANE AND MICHAEL KOSTERLITZ WIN 2016 NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS
i.British trio of physicists David Thouless, F Duncan M Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz have won the 2016 Nobel Prize in Physics.
ii. They are honoured for their individual researches on theoretical discoveries of topological phase transitions and topological phases of matter.
iii. The research work on Topology is a branch of mathematics involving step-wise changes like making a series of holes in an object.

5. SBI BECOMES FIRST DOMESTIC BANK TO OPEN BRANCH IN YANGON, MYANMAR
i.State Bank of India  has announced the opening up its foreign branch in Yangon, the capital city of Myanmar.
ii. SBI became the first domestic bank of India to open a branch in Myanmar.

1. JAPAN'S OHSUMI WON NOBEL PRIZE IN MEDICINE
i. Japan's Yoshinori Ohsumi a cell biologist specialising in autophagy, has received the 2016 Noble Prize in Medicine.
ii. He has received the award "for his discoveries of mechanisms for autophagy".

2. INDIA RATIFIES HISTORIC PARIS CLIMATE DEAL AT UN
i. India on the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi joined the Paris Climate Change Agreement by submitting its instrument of ratification in New York
ii. India became the 62nd country to ratify the agreement.
iii. COP22 will take place at Marrakech in Morocco, 2016.
iv. The Paris Agreement is an agreement within the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change dealing with greenhouse gases.

3. INDIA'S GAGANJEET BHULLAR WINS KOREA OPEN
i. Indian golfer Gaganjeet Bhullar won his 6th Asian Tour title winning the Korea Open 2016 in Incheon,South Korea.
ii. He won last asian title in 2013 and awarded Arjuna Award in 2013.

1. CENTRE GOVERNMENT CONSTITUTES INSOLVENCY AND BANKRUPTCY BOARD OF INDIA
I. The Centre has constituted a four-member Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India under the Chairmanship of M.S. Sahoo.
ii.Members of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India are:

2. KIEREN DSOUZA BECOMES THE FIRST INDIAN TO COMPLETE WORLD'S TOUGHEST RACE, SPARTATHLON
I. Bengaluru's Kieren Dsouza has become the first Indian to complete the Spartathlon.
ii.Spartathlon is widely described as the "world's toughest race".
iii. He completed the 246.6 km distance in the 2016 edition, in 33 hours, one minute and 38 seconds.

3. GUJARAT WORLD HERITAGE SITE RANI KI VAV BAGS ‘CLEANEST ICONIC PLACE’ AWARD
I. Gujarat’s 900-year-old World Heritage Site Rani ki Vav bagged an award for the “Cleanest Iconic Place” at the Indian Sanitation Conference 2016 at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi.
II. The Archaeological Survey of India has maintained the monument and its surroundings very well, offering clean drinking water and proper sanitation, among other things, to tourists.

4. S SIVAKUMAR APPOINTED AS FULL TIME MEMBER OF 21ST LAW COMMISSION OF INDIA
i.The Union Government has appointed S. Sivakumar as a full-time Member of the 21st Law Commission of India .
ii. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan is Chairman of the commission.
Iii.The aim of the 21st LCI is to give major recommendations on a review of the Indian Penal Code

5. ABU DHABI CROWN PRINCE TO BE CHIEF GUEST ON REPUBLIC DAY IN INDIA
I. Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will be the Chief Guest at the Republic Day celebrations on 26 January 2017.
ii.The Crown Prince has accepted the Indian invitation.
iii.It will give a strong boost to the bilateral ties between the two nations in key areas like trade and security.

1. ARUNDHATI BHATTACHARYA GETS ONE YEAR-LONG EXTENSION AS SBI CHIEF
i. Arundhati Bhattacharya will remain the chairperson of the State Bank of India for one another year.
ii. She will oversee the merger of 6 smaller commercial banks into the country's largest lender.

2. SAARC SUMMIT "POSTPONED INDEFINITELY"
i. Pakistan has officially postponed the 8-nation SAARC summit 2016 after 5 countries – India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Sri Lanka dropped out of it.
ii. The SAARC Summit was scheduled on November 9 and 10 in Islamabad, Pakistan.
iii.After the terrorist attack in India, it dropped idea to attend the summit in Pakistan

3. EU MINISTERS APPROVE RATIFICATION OF PARIS CLIMATE AGREEMENT
i. The European Union ministers have approved the ratification of Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
ii. This decision brings the Paris Agreement closer to entering into force.

 4. GOVERNMENT DECIDES TO RAISE EPFO INVESTMENT IN ETF
i. The Government has decided to raise the Employees Provident Fund investment in Exchange Traded Funds from present 5% to 10%.
ii. Shri Bandaru Dattatreya, the Minister of State  for Labour and Employment announced that the decision has been taken considering the good returns in ETF.

5. GANGTOK CONFERRED CLEANEST TOURIST DESTINATION HONOUR
I.The Union Ministry of Tourism has conferred the Cleanest Tourist Destination on the Sikkim capital Gangtok.
II. Chandigarh and Mysore were felicitated for 'Clean Cities in million plus population category' and Gangtok for 'Cleanest Tourism Destination'.
