1. UTKARSH MICRO FINANCE LAUNCHES ITS SMALL FINANCE BANK
i. Varanasi-based Utkarsh Micro Finance started operating its banking business as Utkarsh Small Finance Bank to cater to the needs of the poor mainly in the northern belt.
ii. This makes Utkarsh the 3rd company to operate as small finance bank after Equitas Small Finance Bank and Capital Small Finance Bank all of which got final approval from RBI to operate banking business.
iii. UK’s Commonwealth Development Corporation has infused Rs. 150 cr in the tier II capital in the company.

2. GOA FIRST STATE TO SEND POSTAL BALLOTS ELECTRONICALLY TO SERVICE VOTERS
i. The Chief Election Commissioner of India, Syed Nasim Zaidi informed that the state government of Goa has opted for an initiative involving electronic transmission of postal ballot to service voters in the upcoming assembly polls.
 ii.This initiative will make Goa the first state in the country to do so.

3. MIKE POMPEO SWORN IN AS DIRECTOR OF CENTRAL INTELLIGENCE AGENCY
i. Mike Pompeo was sworn in as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
ii. He was administered the oath to office by Vice President Mike Pence.
iii. Mike Pompeo previously served as the U.S. Representative for Kansas's 4th congressional district.
iv. The Central Intelligence Agency is a civilian foreign intelligence service of the United States federal government which focused on providing intelligence for the President and Cabinet.

4. SIDDHARTHA MURARKA IS APPOINTED ICSI CHAIRMAN
i. Siddhartha Murarka was appointed as the Chairman of the Eastern India Regional Council of The Institute of Company Secretaries of India.
ii. Murarka was the head of risk management and compliance at a member firm of the PwC before starting his own practice.
iii. Siddhartha Murarka is also a “regular faculty” at ICAI and other professional bodies and chambers of commerce like the Merchant Chamber of Commerce and the BCCI.

5. MINISTRY OF STEEL PROPOSES DRAFT NATIONAL STEEL POLICY 2017 AT AN INVESTMENT OF RS.10 LAKH CRORE
i. The Union Ministry of Steel which was headed by Chaudhary Birendra Singh has come out with a Draft National Steel Policy 2017 to increase the supply of domestic coking coal and cut the dependence on imports.
ii. The draft policy objectives to create a globally competitive steel industry for  self-sufficient steel industry and a inter-sectoral growth that is globally competitive, technologically advanced  and promotes inclusive growth.
iii. Under this policy the ministry has set an ambitious production target of building a capacity of 300 million tonnes per annum by 2030-31 which is more than double from 2015-16.
iv. The ministry estimated that an investment of Rs 10 lakh crore would be required to achieve the 300 MT target. It would also generate 11 lakh new job opportunities.

1. NATIONAL GIRL CHILD DAY TO BE CELEBRATED ON 24 JANUARY
i. National Girl Child Day will be celebrated at a special function in New Delhi in view of exemplary achievements by nation's daughters during last year.
ii. They presented commendable performance at the Olympics and Paralympics besides historic induction of the first batch of female fighter pilots into the Indian Air Force.
iii. Minister of State Krishna Raj and Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi will be addressing the audience.
iv. The occasion shall be marked by release of National Plan of Action for Children 2016. 10 districts under the 'Beti Bachao Beti Padhao' scheme for their exemplary performance will also be felicitated.

2. T-HUB LAUNCHES ‘GIS INNOVATION HUB’ POWERED BY ESRI INDIA
i. T-Hub, the start-up engine catalysing innovation, announced the launch of ‘GIS Innovation Hub’ for start-ups.
ii. The GIH is powered by Esri India, the Geographic Information System software and solutions provider. The facility was inaugurated by Jack Dangermond, Co-founder, President and CEO of Esri Inc.

3. STAMP COVER ON SINDHU, DIPA AND SAKSHI RELEASED BY POSTAL DEPARTMENT
i. The postal department of India released a special stamp cover titled Golden girls of India – Pride of Nation during a district-level philatelic exhibition in Agartala to honor the sports personalities in the country.
ii. The special covers feature the 2016 Olympic medalist gymnast shuttler PV Sindu, wrestler Sakshi Malik and Dipa Karmakar. They were also awarded the nation’s highest sports award Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna in 2016.
iii. The cover also depicted the image of Dipa’s coach Bishweshwar Nandi who was awarded the 2016 Dronacharya award.

4. N.K. SINGH COMMITTEE ON FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY AND BUDGET MANAGEMENT PRESENTS ITS REPORT TO THE UNION FINANCE MINISTER SHRI ARUN JAITLEY
i. The Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Committee under the chairmanship of Shri N.K. Singh, former Revenue and Expenditure Secretary and former Member of Parliament presented its Report to the Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley in New Delhi.
ii. The Committee was constituted by the Union Cabinet in May 2016 to review the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management Act.
iii. The Committee had wide-ranging Terms of Reference to review the existing FRBM Act based on the past outcomes, best international practices, global economic developments and to recommend the future fiscal framework and roadmap for the country.
iv. Other members of the committee include, Shri Sumit Bose, former Finance Secretary, Dr. Urjit R. Patel, Governor, Reserve Bank of India, Dr. Rathin Roy, Director, National Institute of Public Finance & Policy and Dr. Arvind Subramanian, Chief Economic Adviser.

5. KYOTO PROTOCOL: GOVT GIVES NOD TO RATIFY SECOND COMMITMENT PERIOD
i. The Centre gave its nod to ratify the 2nd commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol that commits countries to contain the emission of greenhouse gases.
ii. The Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi gave its approval to ratify the 2nd commitment period of the international treaty, which was adopted by nations in 2012. 65 countries have ratified the 2nd commitment period.

6. VODAFONE TO INVEST RS 3,000 CR IN WEST BENGAL IN NEXT 3 YEARS
i. Vodafone India signed an MoU with the West Bengal government to invest Rs 3,000 cr for capacity augmentation and new business initiatives over next 3 years.
ii. The MoU signed on the sidelines of Bengal Global Business Summit 2017 to improve Vodafone’s leadership position in the state by offering customers a SuperNet experience through enhanced network.

1. NATION PAYS HOMAGE TO NETAJI SUBHASH CHANDRA BOSE ON HIS 120TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY
i. Nation pays homage to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose on his 120th birth anniversary on 23 January.
ii. A number of functions have been organised in different parts of the country to mark the occasion.
iii. PM Narendra Modi paid rich tribute to Netaji. Mr Modi stated that Netaji's valour played a major role in freeing India from colonialism.
iv. The Prime Minister said, Netaji was a great intellectual who always thought about the interests and well being of the marginalised sections of society.

2. 3-DAY AROGYA MITRA CONFERENCE BEGINS IN SILCHAR, ASSAM
i. Assam State Governor Banwarilal Purohit inaugurated the Arogya Mitra conference at Silchar.
ii. The 3 day conference has been organised by the south Assam zone of the NGO, Keshab Smarak Sanskriti Surabhi at the campus of Veterinary College, Ghungoor.Aim of the Conference Make available minimum free medical services to the people of isolated and backward places
iii. Aarogya Mitra Seva Kendra have been set up in 701 places to achieve its objective. The conference would see participation by over 1000 people from Barak Valley and adjoining areas.

3. KWALITY LTD SIGNS MOU WITH BANK OF BARODA FOR RS 4000 CR LOAN TO FARMERS
i. Mumbai based dairy firm Kwality Ltd has signed an MoU with Bank of Baroda to provide Rs. 4000 crore loans to one lakh farmers out of the established networks from whom the company procures milk.
ii. It aims to provide financial assistance to improve socio-economic lives of farmers and encourage them towards digitisation.

1. LLOYD’S GETS FINAL APPROVAL FROM IRDAI TO OPEN FIRST BRANCH IN INDIA
i. London’s insurance giant Lloyd has received the final approval from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority to set up its first branch in India.
ii. The specialist insurance and reinsurance company will open its first branch office in India before April 2017 at Mumbai.
iii. Lloyd’s will bring expertise and specialist capacity to India’s insurance market and work in partnership with local insurance businesses to develop innovative solutions that meet the unique needs of the growing economy.

2. BIRENDER SINGH YADAV CONCURRENTLY ACCREDITED AS THE HIGH COMMISSIONER OF INDIA TO THE REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE   
i. Former IFS officer Shri Birender Singh Yadav was appointed as the High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Sierra Leone, with residence in Accra.
ii. Currently Yadav is working as the High Commissioner of India to Republic of Ghana.

3. GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES WEB-PORTAL ‘SHAGUN’ FOR MONITORING SARVA SHIKSHA ABHIYAN
i. The Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar launched a dedicated web portal ‘ShaGun’ for continuous monitoring of the elementary education scheme Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan and promote the development of education sector of India.
ii. The portal has been developed by World Bank in collaboration with Ministry of Human Resource Development.
iii. The portal first-of-its kind platform would perform dual function. Firstly it would focus on displaying positive stories in the field of education in the form of videos, case studies, testimonials, and images on the web portal for further improvement in performance under SSA.
iv. Secondly it provides an online monitoring module to measure state-level performance and progress against key educational indicators to enable the government and administrators to track the efficiency with which SSA funds are being utilised and the results that this is delivering.

4. ALIBABA BECOMES WORLDWIDE SPONSOR OF OLYMPIC GAMES THROUGH 2028
i. The International Olympic Committee and Chinese e-commerce firm Alibaba Group entered into a long-term partnership through 2028 at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
ii. The partnership was agreed between Alibaba Group Founder and Executive Chairman Jack Ma, IOC President Thomas Bach and Alibaba Group Chief Executive Officer Daniel Zhang.
iii. Alibaba has become the first company in the world to make a long-term commitment to the IOC through 2028.

1. PM MODI INAUGURATES SECOND RAISINA DIALOGUE IN NEW DELHI
i. PM Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the 2nd  edition of Raisina Dialogue in New Delhi. The conference has been organized by Delhi based prestigious think tank Observer Research Foundation and the Ministry of External Affairs.
ii. The theme of the 3 day conference is “The New Normal: Multilateralism in a multipolar world”.
iii. Prime Minister Modi highlighted that India’s economic development is deeply impacted by the developments in the world and vice-versa. World needs India’s sustained rise as much as India needs world’s rise.

2. 58TH INDIA INTERNATIONAL GARMENT FAIR BEGINS IN NEW DELHI
i. The 58th edition of India International Garment Fair was inaugurated by the Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani in New Delhi.
ii. The three day long fair has been organized by Apparel Export Promotion Council India.
iii. The event is Asia’s largest apparel Fair providing a platform for the overseas buyers to source garments products and develop business relationships with India in the apparel and fashion accessories sector.

3. 10TH JAIPUR LITERATURE FESTIVAL BEGINS IN JAIPUR
i. The 10th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival was inaugurated at the historic Diggi Palace, Jaipur, Rajasthan jointly by CM Vasundhara Raje, American poet Anne Waldman, veteran lyricist Gulzar and spiritual writer Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.
ii. The theme of the 10th edition of Jaipur Literature Festival is the “Freedom to Dream: India at 70”.
iii. The 5 day event would see the participation by over 250 authors, politicians, thinkers, popular culture icons, connoisseurs, speakers, book lovers among others.

4. ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT SCHEME INAUGURATED IN MIZORAM
i. The Entrepreneurship Development Scheme was launched under the New Economic Development Policy by Lalmalsawma, Mizoram Chief Secretary in Mizoram.
ii. The State government has allocated Rs.2 Crore for New Economic Development Policy.
iii. EDS would be instrumental in the state government’s efforts to achieve market economy from subsistence economy.

5. INDIAN RAILWAYS LAUNCHES ‘MISSION 41K’ TO SAVE ENERGY WORTH RS 41,000 CRORE
i. The Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu launched ‘Mission 41K’ to revamp the existing railway system.
ii. The mission’s main aim is to save the Indian Railways’ expenditure of Rs 41,000 crore on energy consumption over the next 10 years.
iii. To achieve the target, the railway has planned a series of measures that includes: switching over 90% of traffic to electric traction from diesel, procure electricity at cheaper rates through open market instead of sourcing it through DISCOMs.

6. GOVT. SIGNS MOU TO SET UP 1,000 ‘JANAUSHADHI KENDRAS’
i. The Bureau of Pharma PSUs of India has signed Memorandum of Understanding  with the National Yuva Cooperative Society to set up 1,000 ‘Janaushadhi Kendras‘ under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana scheme.
ii. Its main objective is to provide medicines at an affordable price.
iii. The central government has targeted to open 3,000 such centers across India by the end of this fiscal year.

7. CBDT CLARIFIES NO TDS OR ADVANCE TAX CREDIT FOR INCOME UNDER PMGKY
i. The Central Board of Direct Taxes has cleared that income declared under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojna would not be entitled to get any credit by way of advance tax paid or the tax deducted at source or tax collected at source.
ii. This is in contrast to the earlier Income Declaration Scheme under which these credits were allowed.
iii. PMGKY was set up to give an opportunity to those who deposited tax-evaded money in bank-demonetized currencies.
iv. Under this scheme, a person declaring undisclosed income would need to pay a tax of 30%, in addition to a penalty of 10% and a Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan cess of 33% on the tax.

8. WORLD BANK SANCTIONS RS 1,376 CR FOR TRIPURA POWER UPGRADATION
i. World Bank has sanctioned Rs 1,376 crore for upgradations and improvement of the Tripura power system network.
ii. A large number of 132 KV and 33 KV substations will be constructed and upgraded under this project across Tripura.
iii. The Power Upgradation project is divided into 5 phases. SPML Infra Ltd has got the contract of the first phase with the budget of Rs 461 crore.

9. PRIYANKA CHOPRA WINS HER 2ND PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD FOR TV SERIES QUANTICO
i. The Bollywood Actress Priyanka Chopra won her 2nd People’s Choice Award for Favourite Dramatic TV Actress at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California.
ii. Priyanka won for her role as CIA agent Alex Parrish in the ABC thriller TV series Quantico.
iii. Priyanka defeated her ABC counterparts Ellen Pompeo, Taraji P. Henson, Kerry Washington and Viola Davis to win the Favourite Dramatic TV Actress award.

2. 58TH INDIA INTERNATIONAL GARMENT FAIR BEGINS IN NEW DELHI
i. The 58th edition of India International Garment Fair was inaugurated by the Union Textiles Minister Smriti Zubin Irani in New Delhi.
ii. The three day long fair has been organized by Apparel Export Promotion Council India.
iii. The event is Asia’s largest apparel Fair providing a platform for the overseas buyers to source garments products and develop business relationships with India in the apparel and fashion accessories sector.

3. 10TH JAIPUR LITERATURE FESTIVAL BEGINS IN JAIPUR
i. The 10th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival was inaugurated at the historic Diggi Palace, Jaipur, Rajasthan jointly by CM Vasundhara Raje, American poet Anne Waldman, veteran lyricist Gulzar and spiritual writer Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.
ii. The theme of the 10th edition of Jaipur Literature Festival is the “Freedom to Dream: India at 70”.
iii. The 5 day event would see the participation by over 250 authors, politicians, thinkers, popular culture icons, connoisseurs, speakers, book lovers among others.

4. ENTREPRENEURSHIP DEVELOPMENT SCHEME INAUGURATED IN MIZORAM
i. The Entrepreneurship Development Scheme was launched under the New Economic Development Policy by Lalmalsawma, Mizoram Chief Secretary in Mizoram.
ii. The State government has allocated Rs.2 Crore for New Economic Development Policy.
iii. EDS would be instrumental in the state government’s efforts to achieve market economy from subsistence economy.
