1.       SWACHHSURVEKSHAN 2023

·         The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoH&UA) launched the 8th edition of Swachh Survekshan 2023 (SS 2023) under Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0 (SBMU 2.0).

·         It is an annual cleanliness survey with the theme of “Waste to Wealth” for garbage free cities.

·         The SS 2023 is recalibrated to act as an inspiration tool rather than an assessment tool, it also gives priority to the principle of 3Rs – Reduce, Recycle and Reuse.

·         TheSwachh Survekshan was introduced by MoHUA in 2016 as a competitive framework to encourage cities to improve the status of urban sanitation while encouraging large scale citizen participation.

 

2.       PRESIDENT RAM NATHKOVIND VISIT TO JAMAICA

·         The President of India Ram NathKovind paid an official visit to Jamaica and St. Vincent & Grenadines (SVG)

·         This was the first ever visit by an Indian President to these countries(Jamaica and SVG).

·         He visited Jamaica to hold delegation level talks with his counterpart, the Governor General of Jamaica, Sir Patrick Allen.

3.       WEF’S TRAVEL AND TOURISM COMPETITIVENESS INDEX 2021

·         The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) ranked India 54th position (down from 46th in 2019) with a score of 4.1 in its Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021

·         Japan has topped (1) the global chart and the bottom position (117) is occupied by the country Chad.

·         The Theme of the WEF’s Travel and Tourism Development Index 2021 is “Rebuilding for a Sustainable and Resilient Future”.

4.       WORLD’S MOST VALUABLE COMPANY

·         Oil giant Saudi Aramco has surpassed Apple Inc. to become the world’s most valuable company due to the recent surge in oil prices.

·         Aramco traded near its highest level on record with a market capitalization of about USD 2.43 trillion, surpassing that of Apple for the first time since 2020.

 

5.       ‘RAJBHASHA SHIELD’ PRIZE

·         Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, Raj Kumar Singh, chaired the meeting of Hindi Salahkar Samiti and conferred NHPC Limited with the first prize for the year 2020-21 for excellent implementation of Rajbhasha.

·         NHPC has also been awarded “RajbhashaKirti Puraskar” nine times by the Government of India for its excellent work in the field of implementation of Rajbhasha.

 

6.       WANGARI MAATHAI FOREST CHAMPIONS AWARD 

·         Cameroonian Activist Cecile Ndjebet was honoured with the 2022 Wangari Maathai Forest Champions Award for her contribution to preserving forests and improving the lives of people dependent on forests. 

·         The award was presented by the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF), chaired by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) at a ceremony during the XV(15th) World Forestry Congress in Seoul, Republic of Korea.

 

7.       NEW CHAIRPERSON OF COMMITTEE B AT 75TH WORLD HEALTH ASSEMBLY

·         World’s highest health is the main policy making body of the World Health Organisation which is composed of health ministers from member states.World Health Assembly functions through two committees i.e., Committee A and Committee B.

·         Now, India’s Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has been appointed as the chairperson of committee B at the 75th World Health Assembly, at Geneva, Switzerland.

·         The Committee A meets to debate technical and health matters

·         The Committee B primarily discusses administrative and financial matters of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

·         Every year the World Health Assembly is convened at Geneva, Switzerland.

·         The World Health Organisation (WHO) member states (194) has re-elected DrTedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus for a second 5 year term as the Director-General (DG) of WHO.

 

8.       FOOTBALL: ITALIAN CUP 2021/2022

·         Inter Milan (FC Internazionale Milano) defeated Juventus, at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Italy and won the Italian Cup (Coppa Italia) 2021/2022 – branded as the Coppa Italia Frecciarossa 2021-2022.

 

9.       BOOK  ‘LISTEN TO YOUR HEART: THE LONDON ADVENTURE’

·         A new book titled “Listen to Your Heart: The London Adventure” authored by Ruskin Bond, was published by Penguin Random House India (PRHI)

·         Ruskin Bond, India’s famous Children’s book author, was born in Kasauli (Himachal Pradesh) and grew up in Jamnagar (Gujarat), Dehradun (Uttarakhand), New Delhi and Shimla (Himachal Pradesh).

10.    INTERNATIONAL MISSING CHILDREN’S DAY 2022 – MAY 25

·         International Missing Children’s Day is annually observed across the globe on 25th May to create awareness about child abduction and educate the general public on the measures to protect and safeguard their children.

·         In 1983, then President of United States of America(USA) Ronald Reagen declared the 25th May of every year as the USA’s National Missing Children’s Day. 

·         The date marks the disappearance of a 6-year-old boy EtanPatz on 25th May 1979, who was kidnapped on his way to school in New York City, USA.

1.       INDIAN NAVY-BANGLADESH NAVY CORPAT CONDUCTED

·         The 4th edition of the Indian Navy-Bangladesh Navy (IN-BN) Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) was conducted in the Northern Bay of Bengal to ensure maritime security in the region.

·         Both sides undertook joint patrolling along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).

 

2.       INDIA RECORDED HIGHEST EVER ANNUAL FDI INFLOW OF USD 83.57BN IN FY22.

·         As per data released by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), India’s foreign direct investments (FDI) inflow was increased by 1.95% on-year to the highest ever annual figure of USD83.57 billion in the FY22 (2021-2022) as compared to $81.97 billion in FY21.

·         In India, Singapore is the top investing country with 27% of the equity inflows.

·         It is followed by the United States (US) with inflows at 18% and Mauritius at 16% in FY22.

·         Among states, Karnataka is the top recipient state for another year i.e. FY22 with 38% share of the total FDI equity inflows

1.      GREENKO IS TO SET UP WORLD’S LARGEST IRESP IN KURNOOL, ANDHRA PRADESH

·         The Greenko Group and the Government of Andhra Pradesh is setting up the World’s largest Integrated Renewable Energy Storage Project (IRESP) with a capacity to store 5,230 Mega Watt (MW), in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh.

·         It will be the first-of-its-kind Single location energy storage project with wind and solar capacities.

·         The project is scheduled to be commissioned by the last quarter of 2023.

·         It is being implemented with an investment of over USD 3 billion comprising pumped storage (10,800 megawatt hour of daily storage), solar (3,000 MW) and wind (550 MW).

1.       POP-UP AIRPORT AIR ONE – WORLD’S FIRST AIRPORT FOR DRONES & FLYING CARS OPENED IN UK

·         The Coventry City Council and Urban-Air Port Limited, United Kingdom (UK) based Start-up parterened to set up the world’s first Urban airport Pop-up Air-One, for electric drones and flying cars in the city of Coventry, England.

·         The Pop up Air-One airport is designed to be fully autonomous and to integrate with electric vehicles to create a completely sustainable public transport network.

 

2.       INDIAN NAVY & DRDO SUCCESSFULLY TEST-FIRES FIRST NAVAL ANTI-SHIP MISSILE

·         The Indian Navy in association with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully test fired the first indigenously developed air launched Naval Anti-ship missile from a Seaking 42B Helicopter at the Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Balasore, Odisha.

 

3.       HANSA-NG – INDIA’S FIRST INDIGENOUS TRAINER AIRCRAFT

·         The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) designed and developed, ‘HANSA-NG’ the new generation two seater flying trainer aircraft was successfully completed in-flight engine relight test

·         Test held at the Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) facility of Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO) at Challakere, Chitradurga district of Karnataka.

 

4.       GLOBAL FOOD POLICY REPORT (GFPR)2022

·         The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) released ‘Global Food Policy Report (GFPR)2022- Climate Change & Food Systems’ stating the number of Indians at risk from hunger is expected to be 73.9 million by 2030 i.e. an increase by 23%; and 45 million by 2050.

·         With Climate Change (CC) effect, this number will change to 90.6 million in 2030, and 44.9 in 2050.

·         Globally 593.3 million people at risk of hunger by 2030 with CC as a factor, and 478.7 million by 2050.
iii.In the 2021 Global Hunger Index, India ranked 101 out of the 116 countries with a score of 27.5 (serious).

 

5.       NATGEO INSTALLED WORLD’S HIGHEST WEATHER STATION ON MT. EVEREST

·         The National Geographic Society has installed the ‘World’s highest weather station’ on Mount Everest at an altitude of 8,830 metres to automatically measure various meteorological phenomena. It was installed a few metres below the Summit point of 8,848.86 metres as the snow and ice on the summit are not suitable for fixing the equipment.

·         NatGeo Installed the World’s Highest Weather Station on Mt. Everest.The weather station is powered by Solar energy.

·         China has flown an airship named Jimu No.1 over Mt Everest at a record height of 9,032 metres in order to study the Atmospheric Composition Data and the Water vapour transporting process from the surface. 

 

6.       WORLD METROLOGY DAY 2022 – 20TH MAY 

·         World Metrology Day (WMD)  is annually observed across the globe on 20th May to create awareness about the Metrology, the science of measurement and its application. The day highlights the use of Metrology in scientific fields, innovation, industries, trading and other fields.

·         The theme for World Metrology Day 2022 is “Metrology in the Digital Era”

1.       UNCCD’S DROUGHT IN NUMBERS-2022

·         In accordance with the Drought in Numbers, 2022 report released by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), there are 23 countries who have experienced drought emergencies in the last two years (2020-2022), including Pakistan.

·         This report releases ahead of the UN Desertification and Drought Day on June 17, 2022 that will held on the theme ‘Rising up from drought together‘. Its global observance will takes place in Madrid, Spain.

·         Notably, the highest total number of humans affected by drought was in Asia.

·         Drought around the world (1900-2022) – More than 10 million people lost their lives due to major drought events in the past century

 

2.       INDIA’S FOREX RESERVES FALL BY $28.05BN IN SEPTEMBER-MARCH 2022

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the ’38th half-yearly report on Management of Foreign Exchange Reserves: October 2021-March 2022′ stating India’s foreign exchange reserves fell by $28.05 billion in the second half of FY22 i.e. H2FY22.

·         India’s forex reserves decreased from $635.36 billion at the end of September 2021 to $607.31 billion at the end of March 2022.

·         Foreign Exchange Reserves are assets denominated in a foreign currency that are held by the Central Bank of the country. These may include foreign currencies, bonds, treasury bills, and other government securities.

 

3.       AJAY PIRAMAL RECEIVES ORDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE AWARD

·         Ajay Piramal, Chairman of Mumbai based Piramal Group, has received an Honorary Commander of the Order of The British Empire (CBE) by Her Majesty the Queen.

·         Honorary Commander of The Order of The British Empire is given for a prominent national role of a lesser degree, a conspicuous leading role in regional affairs through achievement or service to the community, or a highly distinguished, innovative contribution in his or her area of activity.

·         Instituted in 1917 by King George V.

 

4.       SS MUNDRA APPOINTED AS CHAIRMAN OF BSE LTD

·         The BSE (Formerly Bombay Stock Exchange) Limited appointed Subhash Sheoratan Mundra (SS Mundra), Public Interest Director, BSE as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the company.

·         Mundra retired as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in July 2017 after completing a stint of three years.

 

5.       INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY 2022 – MAY 18 

·         International Museum Day (IMD) is annually observed across the globe on 18th May to create awareness about the Museums which are important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples.

1.       52ND TIGER RESERVE OF INDIA

·         The Ramgarh Vishdhari Sanctuary covering Bundi, Bhilwara and Kota districts of Rajasthan was notified as India’s 52nd Tiger Reserve (TR).

·         The Ramgarh Vishdhari TR is  Rajasthan’s Fourth Tiger reserve; the three others are Ranthambore TR, Sariska TR and Mukundra TR.

·         According to the “Status of Tigers in India” report released in 2019, there are 2,967 tigers in 20 states across the country. With this India accounts for 70 percent of the world’s tiger population.

 

2.       INDIA REMAINS WORLD’S TOP REMITTANCE RECIPIENT IN 2021: WORLD BANK

·         The World Bank (WB) has released a report titled ‘Migration and Development Brief 36, May 2022: A War in a Pandemic: Implications of the Ukraine crisis and COVID-19 on Global Governance of Migration and Remittance Flows’. 

·         In accordance to this, India has emerged as the largest remittance receiving country globally in 2021 worth $89.4 billion as compared to $82.73 billion in 2020. 

·         It is followed by Mexico at 2nd place and China at 3rd, Philippines (4th), and Egypt (5th).

·         Though India retained its position as the top recipient of remittances globally, however, in comparison to its economy, remittances accounted for only 3% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2021. 

 

3.       VISIT OF PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA MODI TO LUMBINI, NEPAL

·         On the invitation of Nepal’s Prime Minister (PM), Sher Bahadur Deuba, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an official visit to Lumbini in Nepal,

·         The Prime Ministers visited the historical Ashoka Pillar, which has the first epigraphic proof that Lumbini was the birthplace of Lord Buddha.

4.       INDIA OVERTAKES GERMANY TO BECOME 4TH LARGEST VEHICLE MARKET

·         According to the report released by Organisation Internationale des Constructeursd’Automobiles (OICA), India has surpassed Germany to become 4th largest vehicle market in the world.

·         The 1st was occupied by China, followed by the US and Japan.

·         India is expected to become the third largest Vehicle market by 2025, However it requires India to surpass Japan which sold 4,448,340 units in 2021.

 

5.       FRAUDS IN PSBS DIP OVER 51% TO RS 40,295 CR: RBI DATA

·         In accordance with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data on frauds reported by the 12 Public Sector Banks (PSBs) in all categories during FY22, there is over 51% dip in the amount involved in frauds to Rs 40,295.25 crore during FY22 as compared to Rs 81,921.54 crore in FY21.

·         However, the pace of fraud cases was declined to 7,940 in FY22 as compared to 9,933 incidents reported in FY21.

6.       WORLD BANK SANCTIONS USD 350 MILLION AID FOR SRESTHA-GUJARAT PROJECT 

·         The World Bank has approved USD 350 million in funding for the Systems Reform Endeavour for Transformed Health Achievement in Gujarat (SRESTHA-G) project’s implementation.

·         The SRESTHA-G project will be worth USD 500 million, with the World Bank contributing USD 350 million. The project will encompass the transformation of key health delivery systems in Gujarat.

·         World Bank - International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and International Development Association (IDA) make up the World Bank. 

·         The World Bank Group consists of five development institutions: IBRD, IDA, International Finance Corporation (IFC), Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA) & International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID).

·         French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed Elisabeth Borne as the country’s new Prime Minister.

·         Elisabeth Borne is the second woman to hold the position after Edith Cresson (1991-1992) under President Francois Mitterrand.

 

8.       2021 SUMMER DEAFLYMPICS - CAXIAS DO SUL, BRAZIL

·         The 24th edition of 2021 Summer Deaflympics i.e. Caxias 2021, officially called the XXIV Summer Deaflympic Games, was an international multi-sport event held at Festa da Uva, Caxias do Sul, Brazil

·         The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) is the main governing body responsible for the organisation of Deaflympics and other World Deaf Championships.

·         This is the first time the Games are being held in a Latin American country and not during the summer of the host city (as it is autumn in May in the south of Brazil)

·         The Motto of the event is “Sports comes from the our hearts”

·         The mascot of the Deaflympics is the Ring-tailed Coati – Nino, meaning priceless, worthy of appreciation, cheerful, happy, very lucky, auspicious.
