CHANDRAGUPTA MAURYA (322 – 297 BC):
  • With the help of Chanakya, known as Kautilya or Vishnugupta, he overthrew the Nandas & established the rule of the Maurya dynasty.
  • He belonged to Moora tribe as his mother was a Moora
  • Chandragupta was called Sandrocottus by the Greek scholars.
·         Seleucus Necater, one of the generals of Alexander death, had succeeded in gaining control of most of the Asia after death of Alexander. Chandragupta defeated him in 305 BC and according to the treaty that followed the battle, Chandragupta married Halena who was daughter of Selucus and got the control of Hairat, Kandhar and Kabul.
·         Built a vast empire, which included not only good portions of Bihar and Bengal, but also western and north western India and the Deccan.
  • The accounts were given by Megasthenes (A Greek ambassador sent by Seleucus to the court of Chandragupta Maurya) in his book Indica and from the Arthashastra of Kautilya.
  • Chandragupta adopted Jainism and went to Sravanabelagola (near Mysore) with Bhadrabahu, where he died by slow starvation.
  • Vishakhadatta wrote a drama Mudrarakshasa (describing Chandragupta’s enemy) & Debi Chandraguptam in sixth century AD.

1. UNION GOVERNMENT LAUNCHED PROGRESS PANCHAYAT TO REACH OUT TO MINORITY COMMUNITY
i.Progress Panchayat  programme has been started  to reach out the minority community and publicize the various welfare measures
ii.The programme is aimed at reach out the minority community and publicize the various welfare measures taken by the NDA government for their betterment.
iii.During the programme the government will also seek feedback and suggestions from the people for better implementation of the welfare schemes.

2. HEALTH MINISTRY RECEIVES DETAILED REPORT ON SCRUB TYPHUS FROM HP GOVT
i.Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare  had sought a detailed report from the State Government on scrub typhus.
ii.Scrub Typhus is an acute illness caused by a bacterium Orintia tsutsugamushi, which is transmitted by the bite of an infected mite larva present in the soil having scrub vegetation.

3. IGI BECOMES ASIA-PACIFIC’S FIRST CARBON NEUTRAL AIRPORT
i. The Indira Gandhi International  Airport has become Asia-Pacific’s only  airport to achieve a carbon neutral status.
ii. The Airport Carbon Accreditation certificated has upgraded the IGI airport’s status to “Level 3+, Neutrality,” the highest level for airports across the world.
iii.The airport boasts green buildings, rainwater harvesting system, solar power plants etc., which have helped it reduce and offset its carbon emissions.

4. FOUR SAARC MEMBER COUNTRIES INCLUDING INDIA DECIDED TO BOYCOTT THE SUMMIT IN ISLAMABAD
i. Four SAARC member countries India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan, decided to boycott the 19th SAARC Summit to be hosted by Pakistan.
ii. The summit is scheduled to be held in Islamabad from 9 to 10 November 2016.
iii.India was the first nation to boycott the summit.
iv. The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation is regional intergovernmental organization and geopolitical union in South Asia.

1. DEFENCE ACQUISITION COUNCIL CLEARS PROPOSALS WORTH RS 1,900 CRORE
i. The Defence Acquisition Council  has cleared proposals worth 1,900 crore rupees under ‘Buy India’ by Indian contractors.
ii. Defence Acquisition Council is an apex body of Union Defence Ministry for clearing defence procurement proposals forwarded by the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force.

2. INDIAN ARMY CARRIES OUT SURGICAL STRIKES ON TERROR LAUNCH PADS ACROSS LOC
i.Indian Army has successfully conducted surgical strikes on terror launch pads across the Line of Control in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir .
ii. The surgical strikes were India’s first direct military response to attack on Uri army base by Pakistan-based militants that had killed 18 Indian soldiers.
iii. The motive of the operation was to hit out at the terrorists who were planning to infiltrate into the Indian territory.
iv.Surgical strike is a military attack which is intended to only damage to the intended legitimate military target and no or minimal collateral damage to surrounding structures, general public infrastructure, vehicles, buildings and utilities.

3. TIRUPATI AIRPORT AWARDED BEST TOURIST FRIENDLY AIRPORT
i. Airports Authority of India’s Tirupati Airport was awarded the Best Tourist Friendly Airport.
ii.It was declared best under the category for State Annual Excellence Awards for the year 2015-16 by Andhra Pradesh Tourism.
iii.The award was presented on the eve of World Tourism Day by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Nara Chandra Babu Naidu at Bhawani Islands, Vijayawada.
4. INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION DAY OBSERVED ON 30 SEP
i. The International Translation Day observed  on 30 September across the world.
ii.The theme of the day is Translation and Interpreting: Connecting Worlds.

5. TRILATERAL MEET BETWEEN INDIA, AFGHANISTAN AND IRAN TO TAKE CHABAHAR AGREEMENT FURTHER
i.A Trilateral meeting was recently held between India, Afghanistan and Iran to take Chabahar agreement further.
ii.It is located on the Makran coast, Chabahar in southeastern Iran.

6. PROJECT SAKSHAM LAUNCHED
i.Project Saksham, a new indirect tax network of the Central Board of Excise and Customs has been approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs .
ii.The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs 2256 crore, which will be incurred over a period of seven years.
iii.Under the project the CBEC’s existing IT systems will be integrated with the GST Network.
iv.This is required for processing of registration, payment and returns data sent by GSTN systems to CBEC, as well as act as a front-end for other modules such as audit, appeals, investigation.
v.It will also help in implementation of GST extension of the Indian Customs Single Window Interface for Facilitating Trade and other taxpayer-friendly initiatives under Digital India and ease of doing business.

1. WEF INDEX INDIA RANKS AT 39TH MOST COMPETITIVE ECONOMY
i.World Economic Forum  has released the Global Competitiveness Report for the year 2016-17.
ii.India has risen rapidly among all countries in the global competitive stakes by climbing 16 notches to the 39th position during the past year.
iii. Switzerland has topped the list followed by Singapore, the US, Germany and the Netherlands in the top-five.

2. WORLD MARITIME DAY OBSERVED ON 29 SEPTEMBER
i. World Maritime Day is observed across the world on 29 September.
ii. The theme for the day is "Shipping: indispensable to the world".

3. INDIAN WOMEN'S KABADDI TEAM WINS GOLD IN ASIAN BEACH GAMES
i. Indian women’s Kabbadi team grabbed  the gold medal at the 5th Asian Beach Games.
ii. In finals India defeated Thailand at Bien Dong Park in Danang, Vietnam.

4. WHO DECLARES REGION OF THE AMERICAS AS MEASLES FREE?
i. The World Health Organisation, a specialised agency of UN has declared the Region of the Americas as Measles free.
ii. Americas became the first in the world to have eliminated measles.
iii.Measles is a viral disease that can cause severe health problems, including pneumonia, blindness, brain swelling and even death.

5. CUBA AND RUSSIA SIGN AGREEMENT ON PEACEFUL NUCLEAR COOPERATION
i. Rosatom, Russian state nuclear agency, and Cuba's Ministry of Science signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of peaceful atomic energy use.
ii. The deal was signed by Rosatom Deputy CEO for International Relations Nikolai Spassky and Cuban Deputy Science Minister Jose Fidel Santana.

3. TYPHOON MEGI HITS TAIWAN
i. The powerful typhoon Megi has recently hit island-nation Taiwan with winds up to 230 km/hr that causing heavy rains and triggering damaging winds.
ii. It is equivalent to Category 4 tropical cyclone.

4. BRITISH WOMAN BECOMES ONE OF WORLD’S YOUNGEST AIRLINE CAPTAINS
i. A British woman has become one of the world’s youngest commercial airline captains at the age of 26.
ii. She flies Airbus A319 and A320 planes to around 100 destinations, such as Reykjavik, Tel Aviv and Marrakesh.

5. OBAMA NOMINATES AMBASSADOR TO CUBA
i. The United States President Barack Obama has appointed its first Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis to Cuba in 55 years.
