1. NGT ORGANISES WORLD CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENT IN NEW DELHI
i. The National Green Tribunal conducted the WORLD CONFERENCE ON ENVIRONMENT at the country’s capital, New Delhi.
ii. The 2 day conference concluded with a high note in urging the importance for the sustainable development balancing which is the need to protect the environment.
iii. The conference was inaugurated by the President of India, Shri PRANAB MUKHERJEE.

2. AADHAAR CARD CANNOT BE MADE MANDATORY FOR CENTRAL WELFARE SCHEME: SUPREME COURT
i. With the growing dependence on Aadhaar card for all kinds of monetary and social benefits, the Supreme Court of India ruled out that Aadhaar card cannot be made mandatory for central welfare schemes.
ii. However, the apex court also accepted that it can’t stop the government from linking the Aadhaar card for opening bank accounts or filing tax returns.
iii. As per the critics of Aadhaar, government is violating a Supreme Court order of October 2015 which specified that the Universal Identification Document cannot be made mandatory for government schemes. It alleged that UIDAI is getting biometric details through private agencies, which violated citizens’ fundamental rights.
iv. According to the government, use of Aadhaar simplifies delivery and helps make the system more transparent and efficient.

1. 94 OUT OF 500 CITIES RATED BY AMRUT
i. As insisted by Mr. M.Venkaiah Naidu, Minister of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, 500 cities and towns that account for the 65% of India’s urban population are to be credit rated by Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation. Out of these 500 cities, 94 cities got its rating from AMRUT.
ii. Based on the report released by the Minister, 55 out of 94 cities have got Investment grade ratings which account 59% of the rated cities spread across 14 states. These 500 cities are included in Smart city mission.

2. 2017 NATIONAL THEATRE FESTIVAL CONCLUDED IN KERALA
i .The National Theatre Festival 2017 was held in Tagore Theatre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
ii. The festival was inaugurated by state CM Pinarayi Vijayan at Central School Grounds, Attakkulangara.
iii. The 2017 edition of the festival was dedicated to one of the prominent personality of Indian theatre, the late Kavalam Narayana Panikkar.

3.  2017 INTERNATIONAL DIAMOND CONFERENCE HOSTED BY GJEPC IN MUMBAI
i. The 2017 International Diamond Conference was held at Hotel Hyatt, Mumbai.
ii. The 2 day conclave was organized by Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council of India.
iii. Its aim is to Bringing together the leading Miners, Diamantaires, Retailers, Bankers and Analysts from across the globe on a platform to discuss the supply and demand issues faced by the Global Diamond Industry.
iv. Theme of the conference was Mines to Market 2017.
v. Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon’ble Minister of State for Commerce and Industry (I/C) and Shri. Piyush Goyal, Hon’ble Minister of State (I/C) for Power, Coal, New and Renewable Energy and Mines, were the chief guests at the event.

1. BIHAR’S TECHNICAL MOVE: FREE WI-FI FOR STUDENTS
i. As Indian government is trying to digitize the whole of India through DIGITAL INDIA campaign, Bihar state made a good move to help this by providing free-Wi-Fi for students.
ii. It is launched by CM Nitish Kumar on the occasion of Bihar Divas celebrations. This move is to provide free- zones in colleges and universities which will be helpful for the student studies.

2. OSMANIA UNIVERSITY TO HOST 105TH INDIAN SCIENCE CONGRESS
i. The 105th session of Indian Science Congress will be hosted by Osmania University, Hyderabad during January 3-7, 2018.
ii. The theme of the session of Indian Science Congress is 'Science and Technology - Reaching the Unreached’. This will be the 6th time that the university will be hosing the conferrer.

3. SEEDING OF JAN DHAN ACCOUNTS – LEAD BY ANDHRA PRADESH
i. On the event of demonetization, more number of Jan Dhan accounts came into existence and it is seeded through Aadhaar card numbers.
ii. Andhra Pradesh tops the list with most number of aadhaar cards linked with Jan dhan accounts.
iii. 87.73% of its accounts are seeded by aadhaar numbers and this was followed by Tripura at 87.08% and Telangana 83.56%.
iv. By this move, 01 Cr Jan dhan accounts are created and Aadhaar-seeded accounts has risen to 63.61%. By this linking, transparency in the banking account will be achieved and it will be easy to track all IT returns.

1.  CABINET APPROVALS ON MARCH 22, 2017
i. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by the PM Shri Narendra Modi has given its approval for development of 403 kms of National Highways in Meghalaya and Mizoram and also approved the Deepening and Widening of Mumbai Harbour Channel and JN Port Channel (Phase-II) project with fresh estimates.
ii. Government has decided to amend the Constitution for setting up the National Commission for socially and Educationally Backward Classes as a constitutional body for socially and economically backward classes.
iii. The Union Cabinet approved the following proposals with regards to NABARD Act, 1981 during the cabinet meeting.
iv. The cabinet approved the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the US Homeland Security Department on cooperation in the field of Cyber Security.
v. The government gave its approval to amend the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.
vi. Central also approved the following proposals with regard to the Fund of Funds of Start-ups which was established in June 2016 with a corpus of Rs. 10000 cr.

1. CENTRE APPROVES OVER 1.17 LAKH MORE HOUSES FOR URBAN POOR AT RS. 5,773 CR
i. The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation approved construction of new 1,17,814 affordable houses under the Prime Minister’s Awas Yojana (Urban) for the benefit of urban poor in six States namely Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Odisha, Kerala and Karnataka.
ii. The total cost of the project is Rs.5,773 cr for which central assistance of Rs.1,816 cr has been approved.
iii. The construction project is being undertaken under 2 categories: Beneficiary Led Construction and Affordable Housing in Partnership component. Central assistance of Rs.1.50 lakh is provided for each beneficiary.
iv. Under BLC, beneficiaries are assisted to build own houses on the land available with them or take up improvement works for increasing living space and other amenities. Under AHP, State Government provides the land to house urban poor.
v .Thus the total number of houses being taken up for construction for the benefit of urban poor under PMAY(Urban) has gone up to 17,60,507 with total project cost of Rs.96,018 cr for which central assistance of Rs.27,714 cr has been approved.

1. GOVERNMENT SET TO LAUNCH INDIA’S FIRST SIGN LANGUAGE DICTIONARY SOON
i. The government has planned to soon launch India’s state of the art dictionary depicting the sign languages used by hearing and speech impaired people across the nation to bring uniformity and bridge the communication gap.
ii. The Indian Sign Language dictionary is being developed by the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre in both print and video format.
iii. ISLRTC has so far compiled 6,032 Hindi and English words and their corresponding graphic representation of the signs which are used in daily life.
iv. The ISL dictionary consists of graphic representations of popular signs used by the hearing impaired and will also include regional variations along with legal, technical and medical terms.
v. Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre is an autonomous organization of the Government of India established under Society Registration Act, 1860 under the aegis of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities under Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.
vi. The main objectives of ISLRTC are to develop manpower for using, teaching and conducting research in Indian Sign Language, to promote the use of ISL as an educational mode in collaboration with universities, national and international bodies.

2. BIRAC’S 5TH FOUNDATION DAY CELEBRATED ON MARCH 20-21, 2017
i. The Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council has celebrated its 5th foundation day on March 20-21 with the theme “BIRAC@5: Impacting the Biotech Ecosystem”.
ii. Minister for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Dr. Harsh Vardhan, was the Chief Guest of 2017 foundation day while Minister of State for Science & Technology and Earth Sciences, Y S Chowdary was the Guest of Honour.
iii. The foundation day celebration was followed by Grand Challenges India Meeting 2017 which was organized by the BIRAC – PMU of DBT – BMGF and Wellcome Trust.

3. MUKESH AMBANI TOPS THE FORBES’S BILLIONAIRE LIST IN INDIA
i. According to the report released by Forbes, India has 4th highest number of billionaires in the World and the Indian group is led by Reliance Industries chief Mukesh Ambani.

1. GOVERNMENT APPROVES SOLAR ENERGY SCHEME FOR SMALL POWERLOOM UNITS
i. Shri Ajay Tamta, The Minister of State for Textiles, informed the Lok Sabha that the Government has approved a new scheme, Solar Energy Scheme, to provide financial assistance/capital subsidy to small powerloom units, for installation of Solar Photo Voltaic  plant.
ii. Its aim is to mitigate the problem of power cut/ shortage faced by decentralized powerloom units in the country so as to improve efficiency, utilization, productivity to face both the domestic and international markets competitively.
iii. The Scheme is meant for Units having 04, 06 & 08 powerlooms and subsidies for different SPV plants will be given in the range of Rs 2,25,000 to Rs 8,55,000 depending upon the capacity of the SPV plant.
iv. The Scheme will come into force with effect from April 1, 2017.
v. Under the Solar Energy Scheme, the Solar Photo Voltaic (SPV) plant will be implemented in two modes:On-Grid Solar Power Plant and Off-Grid Solar Power Plant.

2. INDIA’S LONGEST ROAD TUNNEL, CHENENI-NASHIRI TUNNEL READY FOR OPENING
i. The longest road tunnel of India built at Cheneni in Jammu’s Udhampur district has successfully completed its trail run and is ready for public opening.
ii. The longest tunnel connecting Chenani and Nashiri town is likely to be inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi by the end of March.
iii. The trial run was successfully carried out between March 9-15 during both peak and non peak hours.
iv. The 9-km-long tunnel passes through the Himalayas and is a part of the 286-km-long four-lane project on Jammu- Srinagar National Highway.
v. The tunnel is 1st in India to be equipped with world class integrated tunnel control system through which ventilation, signals, fire control, communication and electrical systems will be automatically actuated.

3. UNION CABINET CLEARS 4 GST SUPPLEMENTARY LEGISLATIONS FOR INTRODUCTION TO PARLIAMENT
i. The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Shri Narendra Modi has approved the 4 supporting GST legislations on March 20.
ii. The 4 supporting legislations are the Compensation Law, the Central-GST, Integrated-GST and Union Territory-GST.
iii. Once the Parliament approves the Bill, the states would start taking their SGST bill for discussion and passage in the respective state assemblies.
iv. Once the new GST regime is into effect it will subsume central taxes like excise and service tax and state levies like VAT.
v. A composite GST will be charged on sale of goods or rendering of services while the revenue would be shared between the Centre and the states in almost equal proportion.

4. FIVE INDIANS NAMED IN WEF’S 100 YOUNG GLOBAL LEADERS LIST 2017
i. The annual World Economic Forum’s 100 Young Global Leaders list released for the year 2017 have given place to five Indians for their innovative approaches.
ii. Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Founder & CEO PayTm, Shruti Shibulal, The Tamara Hospitality,Ambarish Mitra, Founder and CEO of Blippar, a mobile phone app.
iii. Hindol Sengupta and Rwitwika Bhattacharya-Agarwal, Editor-at-large, Fortune India and Founder and CEO of Swaniti Initiative.
