1.      INDIA ACHIEVES 20 GW OF INSTALLED SOLAR CAPACITY WITHIN EIGHT YEARS
i. According to the latest India research report by green energy market tracker Mercom Capital, India has achieved 20 GW cumulative solar power capacity. Out of 20 GW, utility-scale cumulative installations stand at approximately 18.4 GW, while rooftop solar accounts for another 1.6 GW.
ii.  20 GW capacity has been attained 4 years ahead of the 2022 target set under National Solar Mission. Solar Power was the top source of new power capacity additions in India during the calendar year 2017. During 2017, Solar power accounted for 45% of total capacity additions.
iii. After coming to power in 2014, Modi Government revised the target under National Solar Mission to 100 GW of solar capacity by 2022.

2.      IWAI SIGNS PROJECT AGREEMENT WITH WORLD BANK FOR JAL MARG VIKAS PROJECT
i. Inland Waterways Authority of India has signed a project agreement with the World Bank for Jal Marg Vikas Project on river Ganga.
ii. The World Bank entered into a USD 375 million loan agreement with the Department of Economic Affairs, Union Ministry of Finance for Jal Marg Vikas Project.

1.      MAHARASHTRA GOVT APPROVES NEW WILDLIFE SANCTUARY AT GHODAZARI
i. Maharashtra State Government has approved Ghodazari in Chandrapur district as a new wildlife sanctuary in the state. This decision was taken at the 13th meeting of the Maharashtra State Board for Wildlife, held on January 31, 2018.
ii. The meeting was chaired by Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis. The new wildlife sanctuary will include 159 sq km of Brahmapuri forest. This decision will not only help in conserving the forest but will also benefit nearly 40 villages in the region on account of consequential increase of tourism related activities.

1.      PM MODI INAUGURATES GLOBAL INVESTMENT SUMMIT IN ASSAM
i. The first two-day Global Investment Summit has been organized in Assam. The summit emphasises on promoting investments in the state and the North East. The conference was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
ii. Businessmen like Ratan Tata and Mukesh Ambani are taking part in the Summit. Investor's from Bhutan, Bangladesh, Germany and Japan as well as ASEAN countries will attend the summit.

2.      CRISIL, SIDBI LAUNCH INDIA’S FIRST MSE SENTIMENT INDEX
i. The Union Minister for Finance and Corporate Affairs Mr Arun Jaitley launched CriSidEx, India’s 1st sentiment index for micro and small enterprises developed jointly by CRISIL & SIDBI.
ii. CriSidEx is a composite index based on a diffusion index of 8 parameters and measures MSE business sentiment on a scale of 0 (extremely negative) to 200 (extremely positive).
iii. CriSidEx will have 2 indices, one for the ‘survey quarter’ and another for the ‘next quarter’ once a trend emerges after few rounds of the survey, providing independent time series data.

3.      EAM SUSHMA SWARAJ GOODWILL VISIT TO NEPAL- COMPLETE COVERAGE
i. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has returned home after successful completion of the goodwill visit to Nepal. This was the 1st high-level visit from India after completion of historic three-tier elections in Nepal.
ii. In her 1st meeting, Swaraj held talks with CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda.
iii. EAM also held discussions with Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Sanghiya Samajwadi Forum Nepal, Chairman Upendra Yadav.

4.      SHABNAM ASTHANA WINS TIMES POWER WOMAN 2017 AWARD
i. Shabnam Asthana was awarded the 'Times Power Women of the Year 2017'- Pune for Global PR. The Times Group celebrated the invaluable contribution of women by introducing The Times Power Woman 2017 awards.
ii. The award was conferred on her by Dilip Kamble, Minister of State for Social Justice and Special Assistance in the Government of Maharashtra.

1.      UNION GOVERNMENT PROPOSES KEY AMENDMENTS TO PREVENTION OF MONEY LAUNDERING ACT, 2002
i. The Union government proposed changes to various provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 through the Finance Bill. The amendments are expected to make the implementation of PMLA more effective.
ii. One of the key amendments empowers the Special Court to restore confiscated assets to the rightful claimants even during the trial. The amended definition of "proceeds of crime" allows the Enforcement Directorate to proceed against assets of equivalent value located even outside the country.

2.      INDIA JOINS ASHGABAT AGREEMENT
i. India has joined Ashgabat Agreement on the establishment of an International Transport and Transit Corridor between the Iran, Oman, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
ii. According to the External Affairs Ministry, the accession to the Agreement would diversify India’s connectivity options with Central Asia and have a positive influence on its trade and commercial ties with the region.

3.      7TH INDIA ENERGY CONGRESS HELD IN NEW DELHI
i. The 7th India Energy Congress was held in New Delhi. The theme of the 7th edition of India Energy Congress theme is 'Energy 4.0: Energy Transition Towards 2030'.
ii. The India Energy Congress is the flagship event of World Energy Council India and joint event of ministries of power, coal, new & renewable energy, petroleum & natural gas, external affairs and Department of Atomic Energy.

1.      UNION BUDGET 2018-19: COMPLETE ANALYSIS
i. As per the FM in the Union Budget, India is expected to become the 5th largest economy very soon.  The Growth rate is expected between 7.2-7.5% in the second half of 2017-18. Exports are expected to grow 15% in 2018.
ii. As per the FM, India is a Rs 2.5 trillion economy. MSP to increase at least 1.5 times that of production cost. Minimum Support Price of all crops shall increase to at least 1.5 times that of the production cost.
iii. The government will set up a fund of Rs 2,000 cr for developing agricultural markets. Our focus is on productive and gainful on-farm and non-farm employment for farmers and landless families, says Jaitley.
iv. MSP for Kharif cost will be 1.5 times the cost of production. As per the FM, APMCs will be linked with ENAM. The government will develop 22,000 Gramin agricultural markets.
v. The cluster-model approach will be adopted for agricultural production. Allocation in food production sector doubled to Rs 1400 cr. Minimum Support Price shall be increased by 1.5 times. Operation Green will be launched for agriculture and the Minister allocates Rs 500 cr for this.
vi. Agricultural corpus worth Rs 2000 cr will be set up. 470 APMCs have been connected to eNAM network, the rest to be connected by March 2018. A fund for the fishery, aquaculture development and animal husbandry will be set up with a total corpus to be Rs 10,000 cr. We will also allocate Rs 1290 cr for a bamboo mission, as it is green gold. In all, we are providing Rs 10 lakh cr to Rs 11 lakh cr as credit for agricultural activities.
vii. Jaitley proposes to increase the target of providing free LPG connections to 8 cr to poor women. Ujjwala Yojana, the free LPG connection scheme expanded to eight cr households. Six cr toilets have been built already, and in the next year, two cr additional toilets will be constructed.
viii. The government will provide 4 cr electricity connections to the poor under Saubhagya Yojana. Kisan credit card to be extended to fisheries, animal husbandry farmers. The government will establish a dedicated affordable housing fund. Loans to self-help groups will increase to Rs 75,000 cr.
ix. Govt. allocated Rs 5,750 cr to National Livelihood Mission and Rs 2,600 cr to the groundwater irrigation scheme. Ayushman Bharat program discussed. Eklavya schools for tribal children. 24 new government medical colleges.
x. Government is implementing a comprehensive social security scheme. Govt. will initiate an integrated B-Ed programme for teachers. Government proposes to launch the Revitalising of Infrastructure and Systems of Education by next year.
xi. Govt. proposed to set up two new full-fledged schools of planning and architecture. 18 new schools of planning and architecture will be set up in the IITs and NITs. Rs.1 lakh cr over 4 years for initiative for Infrastructure Devt. in education.
xii. National health protection scheme to cover 10 cr poor families. Health cover of up to 5 lakh per family per year for poor & vulnerable. National health protection scheme to benefit 50 cr people. Rs. 600 cr for nutritional support to all TB patients. This will build a new India in 2022 and enhance productivity and will also generate lakhs of jobs for women.
xiii. Rs. 1200 cr for health and wellness centres. Govt. is launching a new national health protection scheme – Rashtriya Samaj Beema Yojana. This will have 50 crore beneficiaries and 10 crore families will get 5 lakh per year for their families to cover secondary and tertiary hospital expenses. This is the world's largest government-funded healthcare program.
xiv. PM Jeevan Beema Yojana benefitted more than 2 crore families. Jan Dhan Yojana will be extended to all 60 cr bank accounts. The government increased allocation for SC-ST earmarked programmes: Rs 56,000 cr for SCs and Rs 39,000 cr for STs.
xv. The government will announce measures to address non-performing assets of MSMEs. As per the FM, Rs. 3 lakh cr for lending under is being allocated in FY 19 for PM's MUDRA Yojana.
xvi. Govt to contribute 12% of wages of new employees to EPF for 3 yrs. Rs. 7148 cr allocation for the textile sector. Govt. will launch a scheme for Galvanising Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan. Under the Smart City mission, 99 cities selected with the outlay of Rs. 2.04 lakh crores.
xvii. EPF contribution has been reduced to 8% for the first 3 years of employment and 12% government contribution to EPF in sectors employing a large number of people, however, there will be no changes in employer contribution. 10 tourist cities to be developed into iconic tourist destinations. 600 railway stations to be redeveloped. Over 3600 km railway track renovation targeted in the current year.
xviii. Scheme for revitalizing school infrastructure, with an allocation of 1 lakh crore rupees over four years. Called RISE - Revitalizing Infrastructure in School Education. The Bharatmala project has been approved and we are confident of completing 9000 km of highway construction. In Railways, 18,000 kms of doubling of tracks would eliminate capacity constraints.
xix. We are moving towards optimum electrification of railway. Over 3,600 km of track renewal is being targeted in 2018-19. 150 km additional suburban railway network at the cost of Rs. 40,000 cr. Regional air connectivity scheme shall connect 56 unserved airports. Airport capacity to be hiked to handle 1 billion trips per year. Training for 50 lakh youth by 2020. Customs duty increased on mobile phones from 15% to 20%.

1.      INS KARANJ- THIRD SCORPENE CLASS SUBMARINE LAUNCHED BY INDIAN NAVY
i. Indian Navy launched 'INS Karanj', the third of the six indigenous Scorpene-class submarines. The submarine, equipped with superior stealth features and precision-guided weapons, has been built at Mumbai's Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited.
ii. Admiral Sunil Lanba, Chief of the Naval Staff, was the chief guest on the occasion. The submarine has an overall length of 67.5 meters and a height of about 12.3 metres.

1.      INDIAN, VIETNAMESE ARMIES HOLD 1ST MILITARY EXERCISE- VINBAX
i. Armies of India and Vietnam have begun a 6-day-long military exercise in Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh. The exercise named ‘VINBAX’ is the first military exercise between the two countries.
ii. Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc was in New Delhi to participate in the India-ASEAN Commemorative summit and attend the Republic Day celebrations.

2.      FIRST EVER 'KHADI HAAT' INAUGURATED IN DELHI
i. Marking the 69th Republic Day celebrations, Khadi and Village Industries Commission and New Delhi Municipal Council have launched the first ever 'Khadi Haat' in the country.
ii. The Khadi Haat was inaugurated by Union Minister of State Giriraj Singh in Connaught Place, New Delhi.

3.      AADHAAR IS OXFORD DICTIONARY’S HINDI WORD OF 2017
i. Oxford Dictionaries has chosen ‘Aadhaar’ as the Hindi word of 2017. The word gained popularity due to Aadhaar card, which was in news in 2017.
ii. The announcement was made in the Jaipur Literature Festival.

1.      INDIA AND CAMBODIA INK 4 AGREEMENTS
i. India and Cambodia signed four agreements in the field of cultural exchange, an exchange line of credit of $26.9 million, memorandum of understanding to cooperate in legal matter and an agreement on prevention of human trafficking.
ii. The documents were exchanged in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and visiting Cambodian PM Hun Sen following delegation-level talks between the two countries. New Delhi has agreed to set up a centre of IT excellence in Cambodia.

2.      INDIA TO HOST INFORMAL WTO MINISTERIAL GATHERING IN NEW DELHI
i. Trade ministers from various countries including Australia, Japan and Switzerland met for an informal WTO ministerial gathering in Davos, Switzerland. India was represented by Deepak Jagdish Saksena, ambassador and permanent representative to the WTO.
ii. India announced that it will host an informal WTO Ministerial gathering in March 2018. The meeting would be held in New Delhi on March 19-20.

1.      21ST INDIA INTERNATIONAL SEAFOOD SHOW OPENS IN GOA
i. 21st India International Seafood Show opened in Margao, Goa. This event was inaugurated by Goa CM Manohar Parrikar. IISS is a biennial event which serves as a common meeting point for various stakeholders of marine products sector such as producers, processing machinery manufacturers, processors,  and technical experts.
ii. Focial theme of 21st IISS is ‘Safe & Sustainable Seafood from India’. It has been jointly organised by the Marine Products Export Development Authority and the Seafood Export Association of India. MPEDA is the nodal agency of the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
iii. During the course of this 3-day event, leaders and experts of marine products sector will deliberate on policies, market trends, technology and action plan to achieving an export target of US$ 10 billion by 2022.

2.      AAI, LAO PDR SIGN CIVIL AVIATION COOPERATION AGREEMENT
i. Airports Authority of India signed an agreement with Department of Civil Aviation of Lao PDR, for providing SkyRev360. SkyRev360 is a comprehensive e-data gathering, invoicing and collection system which has been developed in collaboration with the International Air Transport Association under the Government of India’s Make in India initiative
ii. The agreement was signed in Laos in presence of Ravi Shankar Aisola – Ambassador of India in Laos. This agreement is expected to strengthen bilateral cooperation between India and Laos.

1.      GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCES 4 NEW SCHEMES TO PROMOTE YOUNG SCIENTISTS
i. Central Government launched 4 new schemes to promote young scientists and researchers in India. All the schemes focus on empowering, recognising and motivating youth. Teacher Associateship for Research Excellence Scheme will connect the educators to leading public funded institutions like Indian Institute of Technology, Indian Institute of Science or national institutions like Council of Scientific & Industrial Research to pursue research.
ii. Overseas Visiting Doctoral Fellowship scheme, support will be offered to 100 PhD scholars for training at foreign universities/laboratories up to 12 months during their doctoral research. Distinguished Investigator Award scheme, 100 fellowships will be offered to principal investigators of Science and Engineering Research Board/Department of Science and Technology projects.
iv. Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research scheme aims to encourage science writing.

2.      KOLKATA BECOMES 1ST INDIAN METRO TO GET A FLOATING MARKET
i. Kolkata has become the first Indian Metro to get a Floating Market. The market will be located on a water-body with boats doubling up as shops. The market, located on the eastern fringes of the city, was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
ii. The aim is to rehabilitate over 200 shopkeepers from a nearby market that was demolished for the widening of the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass. The market will host at least 114 boats, each one accommodating two shops.

1.      PM MODI HOLDS BILATERAL TALKS WITH 3 ASEAN LEADERS
i. On the eve of the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit to celebrate 25 years of India-ASEAN partnership, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had separate bilateral meetings with leaders of three ASEAN nations - Myanmar, Vietnam and Philippines in New Delhi.
ii. The PM first met his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc and held talks with on issues of mutual interest. Next, he met the Philipino President Rodrigo Duterte and covered a wide range of subjects. Myanmar's State Councillor Aung San Suu Kyi also met the PM later in the evening.

1.      INDIA TO HOST 16TH INTERNATIONAL ENERGY FORUM MEET
i. The 16th International Energy Forum Ministerial meeting will be held in New Delhi in April 2018.
ii. According to the Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan, the meeting will be hosted by Government of India in New Delhi and co-hosted by the Government of China and South Korea.
