International No Diet Day (INDD) was observed all over the world.

ISRAEL WITHDRAWS FROM RACE FOR UN SECURITY COUNCIL SEAT
Israel announced its withdrawal from the contest for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council (UNSC) for the 2019-2020 term.

Israel has been competing with Germany and Belgium for one out of the two seats assigned to the Western European and Others Group.

The UNSC has five permanent members and 10 non-permanent members who are elected for a two-year term.

INDIA SIGNS 200 MILLION US DOLLAR LOAN DEAL WITH WORLD BANK FOR NATIONAL NUTRITION MISSION (POSHAN ABHIYAAN)
Deal was signed for for 315 districts across all states/uts

This loan will help India to reach its goal of reducing stunting in children of the age 0-6 years from 38.4% to 25% by 2022.

The POSHAN (PM’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment) Abhiyaan was launched by Prime Minister on 8th March 2018 at Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.

POSHAN Abhiyaan’s main objective is gradual increase of the interventions supported by the World Bank assisted Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Systems Strengthening and Nutrition Improvement Project (ISSNIP) to all districts in India for a 3-year period.

INDIA TOPS LIST OF FASTEST GROWING ECONOMIES FOR COMING DECADE: HARVARD STUDY
The Centre for International Development at Harvard University Predicted the Fastest growing economies in the world for the Upcoming Decade.
India Topped the list with the Projection of 7.9 Per cent which is far high than China (4.9 Per cent),U.S.(3 Per cent) Uganda is in Second Position with predicted growth of 7.5 percent.

India Topped the list because it made tremendous growth in Various Sectors Namely,Chemicals,Vehicles & Certain Electronics Sectors..

ADB PROJECTS INDIA’S GROWTH AT 7.3% IN 2018 AT THE 51ST ADB ANNUAL MEETING
51st Asian Development Bank( ADB) Annual Meeting was Presided by ADB President Takehiko Nakao. Meeting,Nakao Said that India’s growth is Projected to be 7.3 Percent in Fiscal Year 2018 & 7.6 Per cent in the next Fiscal,which is far higher than its 6.6 Percent in FiscalYear 2017.

DAKOTA DC-3 VP 905 AIRCRAFT JOINS IAF AGAIN
Dakota DC-3 VP 905 aircraft joined the Indian Air Force again, in an induction ceremony at Hindan air force station, Uttar Pradesh, over four decades after the aircraft fleet was phased out.

The restored Dakota has been renamed as ‘Parashuram’. It will join the ‘Vintage Fly’ of one each of Tiger Moth and Howard developed at Hindan air force station.

The Dakota was also known as the Gooney Bird. It was the first major transport aircraft inducted in the Indian Air Force. It was in operations from 1947 to 1971.

NASA LAUNCHES INSIGHT SPACECRAFT TO MARS TO STUDY RED PLANET’S QUAKES
NASA launched InSight spacecraft aboard an Atlas V rocket to study “Marsquakes”, from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, United States.
InSight is the short form for Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport.

Pakyong airport in Sikkim, which is scheduled to be commissioned in June 2018, will be the 100th operational airport in the country.

Currently, Sikkim is the only state in India that does not have an airport.

India among top 5 defence spenders: SIPRI Report
As per a report released by Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), India is among top 5 defence spenders in the world for the year 2017.

In 2017, India’s Defence expenditure stood at $63.9 billion, marking a 5.5 per cent increment over the previous year. India has replaced France at the No. 5 spot.

With $610 billion defence expenditure in 2017, United State (US) retained its position as world’s largest spender and is followed by China.

As per data released by World Health Organisation (WHO), 14 Indian cities have figured in a list of 20 most polluted cities in the world.

14 Indian cities that have figured in the list are: Kanpur, Faridabad, Gaya, Patna, Agra, Muzaffarpur, Srinagar, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Patiala, Lucknow, Delhi and Varanasi.

India has joined the United States and China as one of the world’s five biggest military spenders
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) released a report, according to which India joined the United States and China as one of the world’s 5 biggest military spenders.
As per the SIPRI report, New Delhi’s defence spending increased by 5.5 percent to $63.9 billion in 2017. Now it has surpassed France.

The list of the world’s biggest military spenders is dominated by the US and China, which spent $610 billion and $228 billion respectively.

GST REVENUE COLLECTION IN THE MONTH OF APRIL 2018 EXCEEDS RS. 1 LAKH CRORE
As per data released by Union Ministry of Finance, the total gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue collected in the month of April 2018 surpassed the Rs 1 lakh crore mark and stood at Rs 103458 crore.

Since roll out of GST in July 2017, April 2018 is the first ever month in which GST collection surpassed Rs. 1 lakh crore mark.

HOCKEY INDIA NAMES HARENDRA SINGH AS MEN’S COACH

Hockey India has named Harendra Singh as the chief coach for the Indian men’s hockey team.

Earlier, Harendra Singh was appointed as the chief coach of the Indian women’s hockey team in September 2017. Under his guidance the women’s team won the Asia Cup title in Japan in October 2017.

Harendra Singh will take over the role of chief coach of the Indian men’s hockey team from Dutchman Sjoerd Marijne, who will now be the chief coach of the women’s national side

1.      OPPOSITION SUBMITS MOTION TO IMPEACH CHIEF JUSTICE DIPAK MISRA
i. seven opposition parties led by the Indian National Congress submitted a notice to the Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President, M Venkaiah Naidu for the impeachment of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra.
ii. According to reports, over 60 MPs of the Rajya Sabha belonging to seven different political parties gave the notice seeking the removal of the Chief Justice.
iii. The impeachment is demanded over the grounds of alleged improprieties including favouritism in allocating cases to benches in the Supreme Court.
Dipak Misra is the 45th Chief Justice of India.
iv. The procedure for the removal of a Supreme Court judge including the Chief Justice is laid down in Article 124(4) of the Constitution.

i. The opening of the first movie theater in Saudi Arabia has been highly anticipated across the country, after over 35 years of prohibition for religious reasons.
ii. The first film screening is to be in the capital Riyadh, where a mixed Saudi and foreign audience watched the Marvel superhero film "Black Panther".

2.      CHHATTISGARH TO DISTRIBUTE FREE SMARTPHONES TO OVER 50 LAKH PEOPLE
i. The BJP government in Chhattisgarh will start distributing smartphones to over 50 lakh people for free from May under the Sanchar Kranti Yojana .
ii. Women heads of households will be the priority recipients of the smart phones.

1.      INDIA SIGNS LOAN AGREEMENT WITH WORLD BANK FOR USD 48 MILLION FOR MEGHALAYA
i. A Loan Agreement for IBRD loan of USD 48 million for the “Meghalaya Community - Led Landscapes Management Project ” was signed with the World Bank.
ii. The Objective of the Project is to strengthen community-led landscapes management in selected landscapes in the State of Meghalaya.

2.      GOVERNMENT REVISES TARGET TO COMPLETE PMGSY FROM YEAR 2022 TO 2019
i. The Union Government has stated that the PradhanMantri Gram SadakYojana is well on its way to achieving the target by March 2019.
ii.The scheme was started in 2000, has been able to provide connectivity to more than One lakh 50 thousand habitations.
ii. Sensing the importance and urgency of rural roads for national development, the target date for completion of PMGSY-I has been preponed from 2022 to 2019.

1.      SMRITI IRANI INAUGURATES 7TH EDITION OF HOME EXPO INDIA 2018
i. The seventh edition of Home Expo India 2018, organised by Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts , was inaugurated at India Expo Centre & Mart in Greater Noida.
ii. Union Minister of Textiles Smriti Irani inaugurated the fair, while Ajay Tamta, Minister of State for Textiles, was the guest of honour.
iii.Home Expo India 2018 will generate business deals for direct import.

2.      HIMACHAL PRADESH CELEBRATES ITS 71ST FOUNDATION DAY
i. Himachal Pradesh celebrated its 71st foundation day with much fanfare and gaiety.
ii.The hill state came into existence after the merger of 30 odd princely states in 1948.
ii. The main event was held at Ridge Maidan in Shimla, where Chief Minister Jairam Thakur reviewed the ceremonial Parade presented by police, home guards and NCC cadets.

3.      COMMONWEALTH HEADS OF GOVERNMENT MEETING BEGINS IN LONDON
i. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2018) has begun in London, the UK.
ii. The theme of the summit is 'Towards a Common Future'. The biennial event has brought together delegates from 53 Commonwealth nations.
iii. The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting  is a biennial summit meeting of the heads of government from all Commonwealth nations.
iv.After every two years the meeting is held in a different member state

4.      UN LAUNCHES ROAD SAFETY TRUST FUND
i. United Nations’ Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed announced the launch of the ‘UN Road Safety Trust Fund’ to stimulate action that can save lives and prevent injuries and sufferings associated with road accidents.
ii. The UN Economic Commission for Europe , the development arm of the UN in Europe, is designated as the Secretariat for the Trust Fund
iii.A contribution of USD 1500 to the fund could help save one life and prevent 10 serious injuries.

5.      DHARMENDRA TO BE CONFERRED WITH RAJ KAPOOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
i. Veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra will be conferred with the prestigious Raj Kapoor Lifetime Achievement and filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani with Raj Kapoor Special Contribution awards.
ii. The state government-instituted awards will be given away at the 55th Maharashtra State Marathi Film Festival.

6.      GOVERNMENT RAISES NABARD'S AUTHORISED CAPITAL TO RS 300 BILLION
i.Under the programe to double the income of farmers by 2022, the government has raised the authorised capital of NABARD by six times from 50 billion to Rs 300 billion .
ii.It will  help it increase its lending to the rural economy.
ii. The increase in authorised capital will enable Nabard to respond to commitments it has undertaken, particularly in respect of the Long Term Irrigation Fund and on-lending to cooperative banks.
Harsh Kumar Bhanwala is the Chairman of NABARD.

1.      CWG 2018 CONCLUDES: IMPORTANT INDIAN HIGHLIGHTS
i. India finished third in the medals tally at the Commonwealth Games 2018 with 66 medals (26 Gold, 20 Silver and 20 Bronze).
ii.  Australia topped the list  with 198 medals and England with 136 .
iii. India's maximum medals came from shooting (16), followed by wrestling (12) and weightlifting (9).

2.      KIDAMBISRIKANTH WINS HIS 1ST CWG SILVER
i. World number one Indian shuttlerKidambiSrikanth won his career's first Commonwealth Games singles Silver medal.
ii. In the final, the 25-year-old Indian lost to Malaysia's Lee Chong Wei, who won his career's third Commonwealth Games singles gold medal.
iii.Three Indian shuttlers have won CWG men's singles title– PrakashPadukone (1978), Syed Modi (1982) and ParupalliKashyap (2014).
