1.PROHIBITION SINGLE USE PLASTIC ITEMS BY 2022

      In exercise of the powers conferred by sections 6, 8 and 25 of Environment (Protection) Act 1986, (29 of 1986), the Central Government amended the Plastic Waste Management (PWM) Rules, 2016 with Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2021.

      With effect from September 30, 2021, the thickness of plastic carry bags has been increased from 50 microns to 75 microns.

 

2.HARYANA GOT 1ST RAMSAR SITES

      Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change announced the addition of 4 more wetlands from India, 2 each from Gujarat and Haryana in ‘The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance’/ Ramsar Convention.

KEY POINTS: RAMSAR SITES THAT ARE INCLUDED:

      Thol Lake Wildlife Sanctuary, Gujarat

      Wadhvana Wetland, Gujarat

      Sultanpur National Park, Gurgaon, Haryana

      Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary, Jhajjar, Haryana

      With this, the number of Ramsar sites in India became 46 and the surface area covered by the Ramsar sites became 1,083,322 hectares.

 

3.INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE SUMMIT 2021

      Invest India, the National Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency of the Government of India has joined the ‘International Climate Summit 2021 (ICS 2021)’ as co-organizer.

      The summit will help in building a platform for India’s transition to clean energy with focus on ‘Powering India’s Hydrogen Ecosystem’.

 

4.INDIA’S 69TH CHESS GRANDMASTER

      20 year old Harshit Raja from Pune, Maharashtra became the 69th Chess Grand Master of India after drawing his game against Dennis Wagner at the Biel Masters Open

      He won Silver in Under-13 National Chess Championship in 2014 held at Jamshedpur and Gold in School Games Federation of India (SGFI) Nationals held in Tamil Nadu in 2014.

 

5.BOOK TITLED “RAMRAO: THE STORY OF INDIA’S FARM CRISIS”

      Rural Journalist Jaideep Hardikar has authored a new book titled “Ramrao: The Story of India’s Farm Crisis” which offers insights into the crisis faced by farmers.

      The book published by  HarperCollins India features the biography of Ramrao Panchleniwar, a cotton farmer from Vidarbha, Maharashtra.

 

6.WORLD PREDIABETES DAY – 14TH AUGUST 2021

      The World Prediabetes Day will be annually observed across the globe on 14th August starting from 2021.

      The day aims to create awareness about Prediabetes and to reduce the increasing rate of diabetes.

      14th August 2021 marks the first World Prediabetes Day.

 

7.PM DECLARED 14TH AUGUST AS “PARTITION HORRORS REMEMBRANCE DAY”

      PM Narendra Modi declared the 14th August as the “Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” to acknowledge the difficulties faced by the Indians during the partition of India in 1947.

      14th August 2021 is the first-ever Partition Horrors Remembrance Day.

 

8.1ST  INDIAN STATE TO RECOGNIZE COMMUNITY FOREST RESOURCE RIGHT

      On the occasion of International Day of World’s Indigenous People Day i.e. August 9, 2021, the Chief Minister (CM) of Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel recognized Community Forest Resource Rights in an urban area, making it the first state in India to do so.

9.INDIA’S 1ST DRONE FORENSIC LAB & RESEARCH CENTRE INAUGURATED AT KERALA

      The Chief Minister (CM) of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the India’s first first-of-its-kind Drone Forensic Lab and Research Centre in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala during a function held in the SAP (Special Armed Police) parade ground.

      Notably, it was launched by the State police of Kerala.

1.1ST WATER PLUS CITY OF INDIA

          The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) has declared Indore, Madhya Pradesh, the cleanest city of India, as the 1st ‘water plus’ city of India.

          Indore received the 1st Swachh Certification of Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) Water Plus from the MoHUA under the Swachh Survekshan 2021(SS2021).

          A city/ward/circle/zone could be declared as Water Plus only if all wastewater released from households, etc. is treated before releasing it to the environment.

 

2.QUALITY OF LIFE FOR ELDERLY INDEX 2021

          Dr Bibek Debroy, Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (EAC-PM) released the Quality of Life for Elderly Index 2021 measuring the quality of life led by the elderly in India.

          It has been created by the Institute for Competitiveness (IFC) at the request of EAC-PM.

          Rajasthan has topped the ranking of Aged states while Himachal Pradesh is top-scorer in Relatively Aged States.

          Chandigarh and Mizoram are top-scoring regions in Union Territory (UT) and North-East States category, respectively.

 

3.2021 SKYTRAX WORLD AIRPORT AWARDS

          In the Skytrax World Airport Awards 2021 list, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport secured 45th rank (from 50 in 2020 rankings), while Qatar’s Doha Hamad Airport topped the rankings.

          Delhi’s IGI has been awarded as the ‘Best Airport in India & Central Asia‘ for the 3rd Consecutive time.

4.COINDCX BECOMES INDIA’S FIRST CRYPTO UNICORN

          CoinDCX has become the first Indian cryptocurrency exchange to grab the title of ‘unicorn’ with valuation to $1.1 billion (Rs 8,150 crore).

          The exchange achieved this status after a $90-million (Rs 668 crore) series-C funding round, led by Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin’s B Capital.

 

5.RBI TO PENALISE BANKS FOR CASH OUT IN ATMS

          Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced a scheme named ‘Scheme of Penalty for non-replenishment of ATMs’ to levy monetary charges/Penalty on Banks & White Label ATM Operators (WLAOs) for cash-out (i.e. the non-availability of cash) in Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) due to non-replenishment of cash.

          RBI will issue a penalty of Rs 10,000 per ATM/ WLAs for banks for Cash-out for more than 10 hours in a month.

 

6.JAMES ANDERSON BECAME 3RD HIGHEST WICKET-TAKER IN TEST

          England Fast Bowler James Anderson overtook India’s Anil Kumble tally of 619 wickets to become the 3rd Highest Wicket-Taker in Test Cricket.

          Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan (800) & Australia’s Shane Warne (708) are leading wicket takers in Test Cricket.

 

7.‘HOW THE EARTH GOT ITS BEAUTY’ NEW BOOK BY SUDHA MURTY

          Padma Shri Sudha Murty, Chairperson of the Infosys Foundation, has authored a new children’s book titled “How the Earth Got Its Beauty”, a part of the chapter book series for young readers.

 

8.WORLD ELEPHANT DAY 2021 – AUGUST 12

          World Elephant Day is annually observed across the globe on 12th August to create awareness about the dangers faced by Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) and African elephants (Loxodonta africana) and the threats to their survival.

          The year 2021 marks the 10th anniversary of World Elephant Day.

 

9.INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2021 – AUGUST 12

          United Nations (UN)’s International Youth Day(IYD) is annually observed across the globe on 12th August to create awareness about the cultural and legal issues surrounding youth and to celebrate the potential of youths as the partners of the global society.

          The theme of International Youth Day 2021 is “Transforming Food Systems: Youth Innovation for Human and Planetary Health”.

 

10.RASHTRIYA SWASTHYA SEVAK ABHIYAN

          The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath launched the Rashtriya Swasthya Sevak Abhiyan in Lucknow by launching the Health Warrior Portal. 

          Under the campaign, Health workers will be trained to fight COVID-19.

          The Health Volunteers will reach every village of UP to create awareness and  to save them from the 3rd wave of the COVID pandemic.

 

11.RAJIV GANDHI AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN IT SECTOR

          The Government of Maharashtra has introduced the Rajiv Gandhi Award for excellence in IT, named after former Prime Minister (PM) Rajiv Gandhi, to recognise the firms that excel in the Information Technology (IT) Sector in Maharashtra.

          From 2022, the award will be given out on 20th August, the birth anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi.

 

12.THE INSTALLED RE CAPACITY OF INDIA CROSSED 100 GW

          The total installed renewable energy capacity in India, excluding large Hydro, has crossed the milestone of 100 GigaWatts (GW).

          With this, India holds 4th position in the world in terms of installed Renewable Energy (RE) capacity, 5th in solar and 4th in wind in terms of installed capacity.

 

13.GOVERNMENT TO SELL 25% STAKE NSC THROUGH IPO

          The Government of India is set to sell around a 25% stake in National Seeds Corporation Limited (NSC) through an initial public offering (IPO).

          National Seeds Corporation (NSC) is a Public sector undertaking (PSU) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare(MoA & FW).

          The Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (DIPAM), Under the Minister of Finance, has invited bids from merchant bankers and legal advisors to work on this IPO and the subsequent stock exchange listing of NSC.

 

14.ISRO’S GSLV F-10 ROCKET FAILS TO PUT EOS-03 SATELLITE INTO ORBIT

          Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) Largest Launch Vehicle Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) F-10 rocket failed to put Earth Observation Satellite (EOS-03) satellite (also known as GISAT-1) into the Geo-synchronous orbit.

          It was launched from Satish Dhawan Space Center (SDSC), Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh.

          The mission failed due to a technical anomaly in the cryogenic upper stage ignition.

 

15.WORLD ORGAN DONATION DAY 2021 – AUGUST 13

          World Organ Donation Day is annually observed across the globe on 13th August to create awareness about the importance of organ donation and to encourage organ donation among the general public.

          India observes the annual National Organ Donation day on 27th November.

 

16.INTERNATIONAL LEFT-HANDERS DAY 2021 – AUGUST 13

          The International Left-Handers Day is annually observed across the globe on 13th August to celebrate the sinistrality or left-handedness, the quality of having a more efficient left hand and create awareness about the advantages and disadvantages of being left-handed.

          The word Sinister is derived from the Latin word which means “on the left side”.

1. LAUNCHING PMUY 2.0 FROM MAHOBA, UTTAR PRADESH

          PM Narendra Modi virtually launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 (PMUY 2.0) Scheme from Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh.

          Under PMUY 2.0, an additional 10 million LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) connections will be provided to the beneficiaries. Lakhs of Migrant Families are also expected to benefit from the scheme.

 

2. WORLD’S HIGHEST MOBILE ATC TOWER IN LADAKH

          One of the world’s Highest Mobile Air Traffic Control (ATC) towers has been built by the Indian Air Force (IAF) in the Nyoma area of Ladakh at the Advanced Landing Ground.

          Siachen Glacier – Located in east Karakoram range, it is one of the World’s highest battle grounds. Also called ‘’3rd pole of the world’’.

3. MOU TO IMPROVE WEATHER AND MONSOON FORECASTS

          India’s National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) & National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of US have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Monsoon data analysis and cooperation to improve weather forecasts in the region.

 

4. TEAM CLAW TO SCALE SIACHEN GLACIER

          The Government of India has accorded sanctions to Team CLAW (Conquer Land Air Water) to lead a team of people with disabilities to scale Siachen Glacier.

          It is being undertaken as part of ‘Operation Blue Freedom’.

          It will be the new World Record for the largest team of people with disability.

          Operation Blue Freedom was launched by CLAW Global in 2019.

          It is a team of former Special Forces Operatives of the Indian Army and the Indian Navy.

 

5.GLOBAL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT INDEX 2020

          The Commonwealth Secretariat released its triennial rankings of Global Youth Development Index (YDI) 2020, it measures the progress in 181 countries across 6 factors of youth development.

          In the country wise ranking, India ranked 122nd out of 181 countries.

          Singapore topped the Index for the 1st time.

 

6.1ST BANK TO CROSS 1 CRORE FASTAGS

          Paytm Payments Bank Ltd (PPBL) became the 1st bank in India to achieve the milestone of issuing 1 crore FASTags.

          It has ~28 percent share as FASTag issuer bank.

          As per the data of National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), around 3.47 crore FASTags were issued by all banks together till the end of June 2021.

 

7. SATNAV POLICY 2021 DRAFTED

          As a part of Department of Space’s (DoS) space reforms, the draft Indian Satellite Navigation Policy – 2021 (SATNAV Policy 2021) was uploaded on DoS website seeking public consultation till August 29, 2021.

          Under this, DoS will also push global usage of Indian Navigation systems viz. NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) on the lines of Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

 

8. MOBILE APP OF NALSA

          Chief Justice of India (CJI) NV Ramana launched the Mobile App of National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) to provide Free Legal aid to the poor and needy people, and to seek victim compensation.

          Features of the Legal Services App

          Using the app, Beneficiaries can apply for mediation, track the application and apply for Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) mechanism.

 

9. BOOK TITLED ‘ACCELERATING INDIA: 7 YEARS OF MODI GOVERNMENT’

          Vice President (VP) M Venkaiah Naidu released the book titled “Accelerating India: 7 Years of Modi Government” during the event held at the Upa-Rashtrapati Niwas, New Delhi.

          He presented the first copy of the book to Arif Mohammad Khan, Governor of Kerala.

 

10. AUGUST 7TH AS NATIONAL JAVELIN THROW DAY

          The Athletics Federation of India(AFI) has declared the 7th August of every year, starting from 2022, as the National Javelin Throw Day.

          The day will commemorate the feat of Indian athlete(javelin) Neeraj Chopra, who won the gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

          He became the first Indian athlete in the country’s independent history to win an athletics medal at the Olympics.

1. “ZAYED TALWAR 2021”

      Indian Navy and United Arab Emirates (UAE) Navy undertook Bilateral Naval Exercise Zayed Talwar 2021 off the coast of Abu Dhabi.

      The Indian Navy deployed INS Kochi and 2 Integral Sea King MK 42B helicopters, whereas the UAE participated in the exercise with Al-Dhafra, a Baynunah class guided missile corvette and one AS-565B Panther helicopter.

 

2. POSTAGE STAMP ON ‘MANANIYA CHAMAN LAL’

      During an event in New Delhi on August 8, 2021, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu released a Commemorative Postage Stamp on the Social worker and Sangh Pracharak, ‘Mananiya Chaman Lal’.

      The stamp was issued as a tribute to Unsung Heroes of India, by the Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications.

 

3. 1ST COUNTRY TO GRANT PATENT FOR AN INVENTION BY AI

      South Africa became the 1st Country in the World to grant Patent to an Artificial Intelligence (AI) System.

      It has granted a patent related to an Food Container system based on Fractal Geometry invented by the AI system ‘DABUS’ (Device for Autonomous Bootstrapping of Unified Sentience).

 

4. UN REPORTED ‘CODE RED’ WARNING

      The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis by the Working Group I was released.

      It addresses the most up-to-date physical understanding of the climate system, climate science, etc.

      United Nations(UN) secretary-general Antonio Guterres called the report ‘a code red for humanity’.

      The report states that if the emissions decline slowly, the temperature rise of 2°C, the limit set by the Paris Agreement will be breached by 2060.

      The report gave 5 scenarios for the future based on carbon emissions, as per it, the world will cross the 1.5° C warming mark in the 2030s, earlier than past predictions.

 

5. ‘PM-DAKSH’ PORTAL AND MOBILE APP

      Virendra Kumar, the Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment has launched a ‘PM-DAKSH’ Portal and ‘PM-DAKSH’ Mobile App under the scheme PM-DAKSH (Pradhan Mantri Dakshta Aur Kushalta Sampann Hitgrahi) Yojana to ease the access of skill development schemes by the target groups.

      The portal and app were developed by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJ&E), in collaboration with National e-Governance Division (NeGD).

 

6. OVERVIEW OF TOKYO 2020 SUMMER OLYMPICS

      The 32nd Edition of Olympic Games took place in Tokyo, Japan from 23rd July, 2021 – 8th August, 2021.

      India finished with 7 Medals (1 Gold, 2 Silver, 4 Bronze) and has been ranked at 48th Position.

      This was India’s highest ever medals tally in an Olympics(Previous one was 6 medals 2016 Rio Olympics)

      The US topped the Medals tally with 113 Medals (39 G, 41 S, 33 B) followed by China & Japan.

7. QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT DAY 2021

      The Quit India Movement Day is annually observed across India on 8th August to commemorate the launch of the Quit India Movement on 8th August 1942.

      The day remembers the sacrifices of the martyrs of the freedom struggle and pays homage to the freedom fighters.

      The 8th August 2021 marks the 79th anniversary of the Quit India movement.

      The day is also known as August Kranti Diwas or India August Movement since the movement was held in August.

 

8. WORLD’S INDIGENOUS PEOPLES 2021 – AUGUST 9

      The United Nations (UN)’s International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is annually observed across the globe on 9th August to recognise the contributions and achievements of the indigenous people across the globe, who have a vast diversity of unique cultures, traditions, languages and knowledge systems.

      The day is also known as “World Tribal Day”.

 

9. NAGASAKI DAY 2021 – AUGUST 9

      Nagasaki Day is annually observed across the globe on 9th August to create awareness about the hazards of nuclear power and to promote world peace.

 

10.1ST STATE TO ISSUE ORDER FOR IMPLEMENTING NEP 2020

      Karnataka government issued an order for the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) – 2020 from the current academic year 2021-2022.

      It is the 1st education policy of the 21st century launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on 29th July 2020 by replacing the National Policy on Education, 1986 (NPE, 1986).

 

11. COLLATERAL FREE LOANS TO SHGS UNDER DAY-NRLM

      The collateral free loans to self-help groups (SHGs) provided under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NRLM) have been enhanced to Rs 20 lakh from Rs 10 lakh by Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

 

12. NAVAL EXERCISE BETWEEN INDIA & SAUDI ARABIA

      The Maiden Naval Exercise “AL-MOHED AL-HINDI-2021” between Indian Navy and the Royal Saudi Naval Forces commenced.

      INS Kochi, the flagship Destroyer of the Indian Western Naval Fleet, arrived at the Port-al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia representing India.

 

13. INDIA’S 1ST HEART FAILURE BIOBANK

      India’s 1st National Heart Failure Biobank (NHFB) was inaugurated at the National Centre for Advanced Research and Excellence in HF (CARE-HF) at the Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST), Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

      NHFB will collect blood, biopsies, and clinical data as a guide to future therapies.

      It will provide insights into heart diseases and heart failure among Indian children and adults.

 

14. HCL BECAME THE FOURTH-LARGEST IT COMPANY

      HCL Technologies Ltd became the 4th most valuable(Market Capitalization-M Cap) India-centric information technology (IT) services company by overtaking Cognizant Technology Solutions Corporation.

      Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) Ltd, the largest IT services company leads the list followed by Infosys Ltd and Wipro Ltd.

 

15. TRIFED’S VAN DHAN AWARDS 2020-2021

      Nagaland has won 7 Van Dhan Awards 2020-2021 for its outstanding performance in various categories.

      The state topped in 3 categories, Best Survey State, Best Training State and the most number of Van Dhan Vikas Clusters(VDVKCs).

      The awards were announced by Arjun Munda, Union Minister of Tribal Affairs, during the 34th Foundation day of the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED).

 

16. NEERAJ CHOPRA APPOINTED FOR CYBER FRAUDS AWARENESS CAMPAIGN

      Reserve Bank of India(RBI) roped in Olympic gold medalist, Athlete (Javelin) Neeraj Chopra for its new public awareness campaign against digital banking frauds.

      As a part of the campaign, Neeraj Chopra urges people not to disclose details such as one-time password(OTP), Card Verification Value(CVV) number and ATM PIN in front of others.

 

17. BOOK-“BALAKOT AIR STRIKE: HOW INDIA AVENGED PULWAMA”

      Manan Bhatt a veteran of the Indian Navy, has authored a new book titled “Balakot Air Strike: How India Avenged Pulwama”.

      The book published by Garuda Prakashan provides a detailed account of the Pulwama terror attack in the Kashmir Valley and the subsequent Balakot Air-Strike.

 

18. WORLD BIOFUEL DAY 2021 – AUGUST 10

      World Biofuel Day is annually observed across the globe on 10th August to create awareness about the importance and significance of non-fossil fuels as a substitute for conventional fossil fuels.
