1.       SWACHHOTSAV, A WOMEN-LED SWACHHATA CAMPAIGN

·         The Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched ‘Swachhotsav‘, a 3-week women-led swachhata campaign, under the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban[SBM(U)] 2.0.

·         It was launched ahead of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2023.

·         As a part of the campaign, a SwachhataYatra will kick-off on March 10, 2023 and will conclude on  March 30, 2023, which has been declared as International Day of Zero Waste by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

 

2.       FRINJEX-23: 1ST INDO-FRANCE JOINT MILITARY EXERCISE

·         FRINJEX-23, The first edition of the Joint Military Exercise between the Indian and French Army was conducted at Pangode Military Station in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala

·         The theme for the exercise is “Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations in a Contested Environment”.

 

3.       2ND G20 GPFI MEETING HELD IN HYDERABAD, TELANGANA

·         The 2nd Global Partnership for Financial Inclusion (GPFI) meeting was held in Hyderabad (Telangana) for two days from March 06-07, 2023

·         During the meeting, India and Italy were declared as the new long-term Co-Chairs of the GPFI, with unanimous support from the membership.

·         The new Co-Chairs have been chosen for a 3-year term, which will commence in 2024.

 

4.       UNICEF REPORT ON UNDERNOURISHED AND OVERLOOKED

·         As per the new UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund) report titled “Undernourished and Overlooked: A Global Nutrition Crisis in Adolescent Girls and Women” released on 7th March 2023, the number of acutely malnourished pregnant and breastfeeding women to be increased by 25% between 2020 (5.5 million) and 2022 (6.9 million) in 12 countries that are affected by the current food and nutrition crisis.

·         The 12 countries are – Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan, Chad and Yemen.

·         The report estimates that, more than 1 billion adolescent girls and women worldwide suffer from undernutrition including underweight and short height, micronutrient deficiencies, and anaemia.

·         No region in the world is on track to meet the 2030 global targets to reduce anaemia in adolescent girls and women by half and low birthweight in newborns by 30%.

·         Child undernutrition: 73% of all low birthweight infants and 74 % of all children suffering from stunting live in South Asia and sub Saharan Africa.

·         Globally, 51 million children under 2 years are stunted, and as per the report, about half of children become stunted during pregnancy and the first 6 months of life (i.e., when a child is fully dependent on the mother for nutrition)

 

5.       8TH NATIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY AWARDS

·         In total, 13 individuals were recognised in different categories.

·         The theme for the Professional category was “Life and Water”.

·         The theme for the Amateur category was “Culture Heritage of India”.

 

6.       PRITZKER ARCHITECTURE PRIZE 2023

·         Sir David Alan Chipperfield (David Chipperfield), a 69-year-old British Civic Architect, urban planner and activist, won the  52nd Pritzker Architecture Prize 2023, the architect’s most prestigious award

·         The 45th Pritzker Prize ceremony will be held in Athens, Greece, in May 2023.

·         The 1st Indian recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize is Balkrishna Doshi, a noted Indian architect and urban planner.

 

7.       AIRPORT SERVICE QUALITY (ASQ) AWARDS

·         Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) – Delhi Airport, has been adjudged as one of the Best and Cleanest Airports in the Asia Pacific region.

·         IGIA won the award under Best Airports by Size and RegionOver 40 million passengers per year.

·         Tiruchirappalli International Airport (Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu ) – Under 2 million passengers per year

·         Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (Hyderabad, Telangana) – 15 to 25 million passengers per year

·         Cochin International Airport (Cochin, Kerala) -5 to 15 million passengers per year.

 

8.       TROPEX-2023 -INDIAN NAVY’S LARGEST WARGAME

·         The 2023 edition of Indian Navy’s Largest War Game and operational-level biennial exercise, “Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise” (TROPEX-23), which  took place across the Indian Ocean Region (IOR), culminated in the Arabian Sea.

·         The recent overall exercise program of Indian Navy which include Coastal Defence Exercise Sea Vigil 2022, Amphibious Exercise 2023 (AMPHEX 2023), and TROPEX-23 held for 4 months from November 2022 to March 2023.

·         The Indian Navy is credited for pioneering the “Make in India” initiative and embracing Aatmanirbharta to become “Combat Ready, Credible, Cohesive, and Future Proof.”

 

9.       CITY INDEX 2023 ON FEMALE BILLIONAIRES

·         India has the fifth-highest number of female billionaires in the world, according to a new International Women’s Day study report from City Index 2023, which was based on the analysis of Forbes’ live billionaire tracker (March 2023).

·         India is tied for 5th position with Australia and Hong Kong, with each country having 9 female billionaires.

·         Savitri Jindal, an Indian politician and businesswoman, is the richest woman in India with a family fortune of USD 16.96 billion.

·         The US leads the list with a total of 92 female billionaires, which is double the amount of China, which comes in second with 46.

·         Germany ranks 3rd with 32 female billionaires, led by German automobile heiress Susanne Klatten (USD 27.58 billion).

 

10.    1ST INDIAN WOMAN TO COMMAND EME UNIT NEAR CHINA BORDER

·         Colonel Geeta Rana of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) is the 1st woman officer to take over command of an independent field workshop in the Eastern Ladakh sector with China, after the Indian Army’s clearance of 108 positions for female officers to assume command of independent units in the Corps of Engineers.

·         On May 1943, the Corps of Indian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (IEME) was established.

 

11.    ISRO RECEIVES NISAR SATELLITE

·         NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) (NISAR), an Earth-observation satellite, was handed over to the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) from National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California, United States of America(USA).

·         NISAR will observe Earth’s land and ice-covered surfaces with 12-day regularity on ascending and descending passes, sampling Earth on average every 6 days for a baseline 3-year mission.

·         The 2,800 kilograms satellite consists of both L-band and S-band SAR instruments, which makes it a dual-frequency imaging radar satellite.

·         NASA is providing the mission’s L-band SAR, a high-rate communication subsystem for science data, GPS (Global Positioning System) receivers, a solid-state recorder and payload data subsystem.

·         ISRO is providing the spacecraft bus, the S-band radar, the GSLV (Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle) launch system and associated launch services.

12.    74TH INTERNATIONAL BOXING TOURNAMENT “STRANDJA”

·         The 74th edition of the International Boxing Tournament “Strandja” 2023 was held in Sofia, Bulgaria\

·         India finished with 8 medals (3 silver and 5 bronze).

·         The International Boxing Tournament “Strandja” 2023 witnessed the participation of 398 pugilists (256 men and 142 women), which is the highest ever in the competition’s history.

·         “The Tournament was jointly organised by the International Boxing Association (IBA) and European Boxing Confederation (EUBC).

 

13.    WORLD KIDNEY DAY 2023 – MARCH 9

·         World Kidney Day (WKD), a global campaign, is annually observed across the globe on the 2nd Thursday of March

·         The theme of World Kidney Day 2023 is “Kidney Health for All- Preparing for the unexpected, supporting the vulnerable”.

 

14.    INTERNATIONAL ‘GOLDEN CITY GATE TOURISM AWARDS 2023

·         The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India (GoI), received a Golden & Silver Star at the 23rd International annual ‘Golden City Gate Tourism Awards 2023’ in ‘TV/Cinema Commercials International and Country International’ Category at ITB (Internationale Tourismus-Börse), Berlin 2023, the world’s largest tourism trade show.

·         The New Incredible India brand films were developed by the Ministry of Tourism for welcoming foreign tourists to India after the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

15.    PRESIDENT OF NEPAL

·         Ram Chandra Paudel a senior leader of the Nepali Congress, was elected as the 3rd president of Nepal. He will succeed incumbent President Bidya Devi Bhandari whose tenure will end on 12th March 2023.

·         Ram Chandra was the common candidate of the 8 -party alliance which includes the Nepali Congress and the CPN (Maoist Center).

·         This is the third presidential election in Nepal since the country became a republic in 2008.

16.    PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA

·         Xi Jinping was unanimously appointed as President of China for the 3rd time, making him China’s longest-serving leader since founding father Mao Zedong (1954-1959).

·         The 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) hosted the 2023 Chinese presidential election on 10 March 2023 in order to indirectly elect China’s President and Vice President.

·         NPC is the national legislature and constitutionally the supreme state authority of the People’s Republic of China.

17.    HIGH PRICE DAM AND SURPLUS POWER PORTAL (PUSHP)

·         the Central Government has launched a High Price Day Ahead Market-HPDAM and Surplus Power Portal (PUShP) – an initiative to ensure greater availability of power during the peak demand season.

·         In 2022, the Ministry of Power has given directions electricity exchange prices had risen to Rs.20 on certain days and directed the CERC (Central Electricity Regulatory Commission) to put a price cap of Rs.12 on the exchange to prevent excessive profits.

 

18.    COLOMBIA OPENS MILITARY SERVICE TO WOMEN FOR FIRST TIME IN 25 YEARS

21.    ISRO LANDSLIDE INDEX

·         Rudraprayag and Tehri the two districts in Uttarakhand are facing the highest risk of landslides, according to satellite data collected by ISRO

·         The findings, compiled by the Hyderabad-based ISRO facility the National Remote Sensing Centre, were published in the Landslide Atlas of India.

 

22.    THIS WEEK KNOWLEDGE SERIES-WHAT IS HUMAN DEVELOPMENT INDEX (HDI)

·         A report on the 2021 Human Development Index (HDI) is part of the Human Development Report 2021-2022 released by the United Nations Development Programme.

·         Human Development Index is calculated using four indicators  life expectancy at birth, mean years of schooling, expected years of schooling, and the Gross National Income (GNI) per capita

·         Top 5 countries are Switzerland (HDI value .962) ,Norway,Iceland,Hong Kong (China),Australia.

·         India ranked 132nd among 191 countries and territories on the 2021 Human Development Index (HDI)

·         In the 2020 report, India had ranked 131st among 189 countries and territories

·         India’s latest HDI value of 0.633 places the country in the medium human development category, lower than its value of 0.645 in the 2020 report

·         The female life expectancy dropped from 71 years in the 2020 report to 68.8 years in the 2021 report

·         Sri Lanka (73rd), China (79th), Bangladesh (129th), and Bhutan (127th) are ranked above India, while Pakistan (161st), Nepal (143rd), and Myanmar (149th) are below India

·         “Yuva Utsav India @2047” is being held in all Indian districts by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MoYAS) through its flagship youth organisation, Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan (NYKS).

 

4.       WORLD’S 1ST 200-METER-LONG BAMBOO CRASH BARRIER

·         The world’s first 200-meter-long Bamboo Crash Barrier named “Bahu Balli” has been installed on the Vani-Warora Highway in Vidarbha, Maharashtra.

·         Bahu Balli barrier is made of Bambusa Balcoa bamboo, which has been coated with recycled High-Density Poly Ethylene  (HDPE) and treated with creosote oil.

 

5.       INTERNATIONAL MARITIME EXERCISE CUTLASS EXPRESS 2023

·         Indian Navy Ship (INS) Trikand is participating in the International Maritime Exercise/ Cutlass Express 2023 (IMX/CE-23) being held in the Gulf region

·         TheTalwar-class stealth frigate, INS Trikand is the third and final ship of the second batch of Talwar-class frigates ordered by the Indian Navy and was commissioned into Indian Navy service on 29th June 2013.

·         It was built by the Yantar shipyard in Kaliningrad, Russia and is commanded by Captain Ajay Kochhar.

·         The other two Talwar-class frigates were INS Teg and INS Tarkash.

 

6.       WORLD BANK’S WOMEN, BUSINESS, AND THE LAW REPORT

·         According to the 9th edition of the World Bank’s “Women, Business, and the Law 2023” report, women across the world only have 77% of the legal rights that men do, and nearly 2.4 billion women of working age live in countries that do not provide them the same rights as men.

·         From 2021 to 2022, the global average score on the Women, Business, and Law index increased just by half a point to 77.1.

·         “Women, Business, and the Law 2023” examines laws and regulations impacting women’s economic participation in 190 economies from 1971 to 2023 (calendar years 1970 to 2022).

·         The report focuses on eight indicators: Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Parenthood, Entrepreneurship, Assets, and Pensions.

·         Only 34 gender-related legal reforms were noted in 18 economies in 2022, the lowest since 2001.

·         At the current rate, it would take at least 50 years on average to achieve considerable legal gender equality everywhere in the areas and it will need another 1,549 reforms to reach that target.

 

7.       BBC ISWOTY 2022 AWARD

·         Indian Weightlifter, Padma Shri Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, who became the 1st Indian weightlifter to win the silver medal at Tokyo Olympic Games, has won the 4th edition of the “British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Indian Sportswoman Of The Year (ISWOTY) 2022”.

·         MirabaiChanu, the 28-year-old Commonwealth champion, became the first athlete to win the award twice in a row. Previously, She also won the BBC ISWOTY 2021.

 

8.       KUWAIT PRIME MINISTER

·         Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Sabah is re-appointed as Prime Minister(PM) of the state of Kuwait Government.

9.       SHIP LAUNCHED VERSION OF BRAHMOS MISSILE TEST-FIRED

·         The Indian Navy (IN) successfully test fired the Ship launched version of the BrahMos supersonic missile in the Arabian Sea.

·         The test was carried out from a Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer warship.

·         BrahMos Aerospace Pvt Ltd, an India-Russian joint venture between the Indian Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Russian Federation’s NPO Mashinostroyeniya. It produces BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles that can be launched from submarines, ships, aircraft, or land platforms.

·         BrahMos missile flies at a speed of 2.8 Mach or almost three times the speed of sound.

·         Its Flight Range is 290 Km and Operates on Fire and Forget Principle

·         In January 2022, India signed a USD 375 million deal with the Philippines for supplying three batteries of the missile.

 

10.    S-400 `TRIUMF’ SURFACE-TO-AIR DEFENCE MISSILE SYSTEM

·         The Indian Air Force (IAF) received the third squadron of the S-400 `Triumf’ Surface-to-air defence missile system from Russia which will be deployed along the western sector, bordering Pakistan.

·         In October 2018, India and Russia signed a deal of $5.43 billion for the procurement of 5 units of S-400 air defence systems to India by 2025.

·         The S-400 defence missile has a range of up to 400 km and it has a tracking capability of almost 600 km.

 

11.    BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

·         Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, a Belgian-Dutch driver, won the 2023 Season-Opener Bahrain Grand Prix, which was held at the Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir, Bahrain (officially the Kingdom of Bahrain).

·         Sergio Perez and Fernando Alonso finished 2nd and 3rd consecutively

 

12.    AIRBUS RECEIVES ORDER FROM INDIA FOR TWO ACH160 HELICOPTERS

·         Airbus Corporate Helicopters (Airbus) has received an order for two ACH160 helicopters in India, marking the first sale of any helicopter in the H160 range in the region.

·         With 68 new Airbus patented technologies, the ACH160 is the latest member of the ACH family and the most technologically advanced helicopter in the world.

·         In comparison to medium twin helicopters of a previous generation, it offers 20% more volume per passenger and 35% larger windows, giving it the brightest cabin in its class.

 

13.    TEJAL MEHTA NAMED FIRST JUSTICE OF A DISTRICT COURT IN US

·         Tejal Mehta, an Indian-American woman judge who promised to make a real impact to the community and treat people with compassion, has taken oath as the first Justice of a district court in the US state of Massachusetts.

·         Mehta will serve as the first Justice of the Ayer District Court

 

14.    NSDC ENGAGES ISB AS KNOWLEDGE PARTNER FOR G-20 EDUCATION WORKING GROUP

·         The Indian School of Business (ISB) is collaborating with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), under the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), as a knowledge partner for the G-20 Education Working Group (EWG).

·         As part of this collaboration, ISB will provide research support to NSDC in the broad area of the ‘future of work’.

 

15.    RBI LAUNCHES MISSION ‘HAR PAYMENT DIGITAL’

·         The Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Shaktikanta Das launched the mission ‘Har Payment Digital’ as part of the Digital Payments Awareness Week (DPAW).

·         The DPAW 2023 was being observed by RBI from March 6 to 12, 2023 to further deepen the usage of digital payments across India.

·         The campaign theme of DPAW 2023 is “Digital Payment Apnao, Auron ko bhi Sikhao” (Adopt digital payments and Also teach others).

·         RBI also plans to initiate a programme named ‘75 Digital Villages’ in observance of 75 years of Independence.

·         Under the programme, 75 villages across India will be adopted by Payment System Operators (PSOs) to convert them into digital payment-enabled villages.

 

16.    CHIEF MINISTER OF MEGHALAYA

·         Conrad Kongkal Sangma ,President of the National People’s Party (NPP), was sworn in as the Chief Minister (CM) of Meghalaya

·         The Meghalaya Democratic Alliance took power for the second time after the NPP received support from the BJP, United Democratic Party (UDP), People’s Democratic Front (PDF), Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), and a few independents.

·         The NPP emerged as the single-largest party in the elections after winning 26 of the state’s 60 seats

 

17.    CHIEF MINISTER OF NAGALAND

·         Neiphiu Rio, leader of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) of Nagaland, was sworn in as Chief Minister (CM) of Nagaland for the 5th time

·         In the 2023 elections for the 60-member Nagaland Legislative Assembly, the BJP-NDPP coalition won 37 seats: BJP-12 seats and NDPP-25 seats.

 

18.    CONTROLLER GENERAL OF ACCOUNTS OF INDIA

·         S.S. Dubey, a 1989-batch Indian Civil Accounts Service (ICAS) officer, took charge as the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), Ministry of Finance (MoF)

·         He is the 28th CGA of the Government of India.

·         The Controller General of Accounts (CGA) is ‘the Principal Advisor’ on Accounting matters to the Union Government.
