1.          INDIA-NEPAL JOINT TRAINING EXERCISE SURYA KIRAN

·            The 16th Edition of Indo-Nepal joint training Exercise ‘Surya Kiran-XVI’ between India and Nepal began at Nepal Army Battle School, Saljhandi in the Rupandehi district of Lumbini Zone, Nepal.

·            The exercise ‘Surya Kiran’ is conducted annually between India and Nepal since 2011.

·            The 15th edition of Indo-Nepal joint training Exercise ‘Surya Kiran-XV’ was held  at Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand.

 

2.          IEA ANNUAL REPORT: INDIA’S COAL PRODUCTION TO EXCEED A BILLION TONNES BY 2025

·            The International Energy Agency (IEA) in its annual report titled ‘Coal 2022: Analysis and Forecast to 2025’, claimed that China and India, the world’s two largest coal consumers, are also the world’s largest producers and top two coal importers.

·            It is projected that by 2025, India’s coal production will exceed 1 billion tonnes.

·            According to the report, global coal consumption would climb by 1.2% in 2022, surpassing 8 billion metric tonnes in a single year for the first time and beating the milestone set in 2013.

·            India is predicted to experience the biggest increase in coal demand, at 7%, followed by the European Union (EU) at 6% and China at 0.4%.

 

3.          PETA INDIA’S ‘PERSON OF THE YEAR 2022’

·            Actress Sonakshi Sinha has been awarded PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) India’s 2022 Person of the Year title for advocating Animal Adoption & Vegan Fashion.

·            According to PETA India’s anti-leather campaign, more than 4 billion cows, sheep, goats, dogs, cats and other animals are killed every year for Leather accessories that no one needs.

·            John Abraham and Fatima Sana Shaikh are PETA India’s Most Beautiful Vegetarians of 2022.        

 

4.          US AIR FORCE SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHES HYPERSONIC MISSILE – AGM-183A

·            The United States (US) Air Force successfully tested AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW or Arrow), a hypersonic missile which represents a cutting edge, strategic weapons system developed by Russia and China.

·            The AGM-183A Air-launched Rapid Response Weapon (ARRW), the first full prototype operational missile was launched from a B-52H bomber off California’s coast.

·            It is an air-to-ground hypersonic missile.

1.             KAZIND-22: 6TH INDO-KAZAKHSTAN JOINT TRAINING EXERCISE

              The 6th edition of the India-Kazakhstan joint training exercise ‘KAZIND-22’ initiated at Umroi Military Station in Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. 

              Indian Army soldiers from the 11 Gorkha Rifles participated in Exercise

              In 2016, the two countries instituted ‘Exercise Prabal Dostyk’, a joint annual training exercise which was later upgraded to a company-level exercise and renamed ‘Exercise Kazind’ in 2018.

3.             PRIME MINISTER OF DENMARK 

              Denmark’s Prime Minister (PMMette Frederiksen, Head of the Social Democratic Party, was re-elected as the Prime Minister of Denmark.

              Mette Frederiksen was elected Prime Minister of Denmark in June 2019 and became the youngest PM in Danish history, succeeding Lars Løkke Rasmussen

              She is in the Fobes List (#74) on the 2022 Power Women

              Denmark is both a democracy and a monarchy. However, as it is a constitutional monarchy, the constitutional Act limits the monarch’s power.

4.             VIJAY DIWAS – 16TH DECEMBER 2022 

              Vijay Diwas, known as Bijoy Dibos(in Bangladesh) is annually observed across India and Bangladesh on 16th December to commemorate the victory of the Indian armed forces against the Pakistan forces in the 1971 Indo-Pak war (India – Pakistan war of 1971) also known as Bangladesh Liberation war.

              The 1971 Indo-Pak War is a confrontation between India and Pakistan that occurred during the Bangladesh Liberation War in East Pakistan.

              The war took place from 3rd  December 1971 until the Pakistani capitulation in Dhaka, East Pakistan(now Bangladesh) on 16 December 1971.

              Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, Army general of Pakistan along with his 93,000 Pakistani troops surrendered before the Indian Army and Mukti-Bahini led by Lieutenant General Jagit Singh Aurora.

1.             ASSAMESE GAMOCHA  GETS A GI TAG

              ‘Gamocha’, a symbol of Assamese culture and identity, has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag 

              A GI is primarily a product that originates in a certain geographical location, whether it is a manufactured product (handicrafts and industrial goods), a natural product, or an agricultural product.

              The “gamocha” is a handwoven rectangular cotton cloth with red borders and various designs and motifs.

 

2.             INDIA & FINLAND SIGNED JOINT DECLARATION OF INTENT ON MIGRATION AND MOBILITY

              India and Finland have signed a joint declaration of Intent On Migration and Mobility in order to reach a mutually beneficial agreement on migration and mobility.

              Ritva Koukku-Ronde is the Ambassador of Finland to India.

              This will promote the mobility of students, academics, researchers, business people, and professionals while also assisting in the fight against irregular migration.

 

3.             ‘MOST EXPENSIVE CITY IN THE WORLD’ INDEX

              According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) Worldwide Cost of Living (WCOL) Index, Singapore and New York(United States of America) has been declared as joint most expensive cities in the world to live in.

              New York has topped the rankings for the first time along with Singapore which has topped the list 8 times in 10 years.

              Tel Aviv of Israel which topped the list in 2021 has secured the 3rd rank in the 2022 index.

              Indian cities like Ahmedabad, Chennai and Bengaluru are among the Bottom 10 positions of the index, ranked 165th, 164th and 161st respectively.

 

4.             GMR DELHI AIRPORT AWARDS 2022

              The GMR Delhi Airport Awards 2022 awarded SpiceJet with the ‘Safety Performer of the Year’. This award acknowledged its top performance among the self-handling airlines and its efforts to reduce ground safety violations significantly.

              Recently, the airline was audited by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and its operations, safety processes, and systems were found to be strong and at par with the global best practices and safety standards.

 

5.             NATIONAL ENERGY CONSERVATION DAY 2022 – DECEMBER 14

              National Energy Conservation Day is annually celebrated across India on December 14 to raise awareness on limiting energy loss and showcase the achievements of India in energy efficiency and conservation.

              The day is organised by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) which operates under the Ministry of Power (MoP). It has been organising National Energy Conservation Day since 1991.

 

6.             GOI GRANTS GI TAGS TO 9 NEW PRODUCTS, RAISING THE TOTAL TO 432; KERALA RECEIVES FIVE

              The Geographical Indication (GI) Tag has been granted by the Government of India (GoI) to 9 new products from different states, including the Attappady Aattukombu Avara, Alibag White Onion, Raktsey Karpo Apricot, Tandur Redgram, and Gamosa of Assam.

              This brings the total number of GI tags in India to 432, of which 401 are for products with Indian origin and 31 are for products with foreign origin.

              Geographic Indication (GI), is recognized by the World Trade Organization (WTO)

 

7.             INDIA HOSTS 1ST G20 FINANCE AND CENTRAL BANK DEPUTIES (FCBD) MEETING IN BENGALURU

              The 1st  G20 (Group of Twenty) Finance and Central Bank Deputies (FCBD) Meeting, under the Indian Presidency, was held in Bengaluru, Karnataka. 

              It was co-chaired by Secretary Ajay Seth, Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), and Deputy Governor Dr. Michael Patra, Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

              160 foreign delegates including Deputies from G20 member countries, invitee countries, and International Organisations Participated in meeting

 

8.             IEX BECOMES INDIA’S FIRST CARBON-NEUTRAL POWER EXCHANGE

              The Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) has become India’s first carbon-neutral Power Exchange, using market based tradable instruments to offset its carbon emissions.

              EKI Energy, global service provider in Energy, Carbon Credit & Quality Management, was the sustainability partner of IEX by providing advisory & consultancy services.

              According to the UNEP (United Nations Environment Programme) 2022 report, global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions need to be reduced 45% by 2030 to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.

 

9.             IAF CONDUCTS ANNUAL AIR EXERCISE IN EASTERN SECTOR

              It involves practically all of its frontline fighter jets and other assets stationed in the region, following the recent clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh.

              The exercise will include the IAF’s frontline fighter jets, including Sukhoi-30MKIs and Rafale jets, and many additional platforms deployed in the region.

              On 9th December 2022, the Indian and Chinese troops clashed along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Tawang Sector in Arunachal Pradesh.

              Six Indian Army soldiers were injured in the clash, which involved soldiers from both sides.

 

10.          PASSPORT INDEX 2022 INDIA RANKED 66

              According to Arton Capital’s “Passport Index 2022,” India is placed 66 in the world’s strongest passport list, while the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is ranked 1st in the passport ranking for 2022.

              In 2nd rank were ten European countries: Germany, Sweden, Finland, Luxembourg, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, along with South Korea.

              The 3rd rank on the list is the United States (US) passport, which grants visa-free access to 116 nations.

              Indians with a ranking of 66 can only travel visa-free to 24 countries, require a visa on arrival for 48 countries, and require a visa for 126 countries.

 

11.          SIPRI REPORT ONTOP GLOBAL ARMS MANUFACTURERS

              Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), a Swedish think-tank, released a report titled Top 100 arms-producing and military services companies 2021’which lists companies making arms, weapons, military planes and equipment.

              HAL has improved to 42nd position in 2021 ranking, compared to 43rd in 2020 and BEL has secured 63rd position, showing improvement from  69th position in 2020.

1.             PM INAUGURATES GREENFIELD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN MOPA, GOA

              Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has inaugurated the first phase of the Greenfield International Airport in MopaNorth Goa, which was built at a cost of about Rs. 2,870 crore.

              It is Goa’s second international airport, besides the existing airport at Dabolim, Goa.

              The airport will be named as the ‘Manohar International Airport’.

              During his visit to Goa, PM Narendra Modi addressed the valedictory ceremony of the 9th World Ayurveda Congress (WAC).

              The theme of the 9th WAC & Arogya Expo was “Ayurveda for One Health.”

 

2.             INDIA-INDONESIA COORDINATED PATROL 

              The 39th edition of India-Indonesia Coordinated Patrol (IND-INDO CORPAT) is being conducted along the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL)

              The CORPAT will conclude at Port Blair, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

              The IND-INDO CORPAT between India and Indonesia has been carried out twice a year since 2002

 

3.             SUKHVINDER SINGH SUKHU IS 15TH CM OF HIMACHAL PRADESH

              Former Congress state Chief Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu took oath as the 15th Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh (HP) while Mukesh Agnihotri took oath as the Deputy CM of the state.

              He is a MLA from Nadaun in Hamirpur.

              He is the first Congress CM in Himachal from the lower part of the state that comprises Kangra, Bilaspur, Una and Hamirpur districts.

              Congress won 40 seats in the 68-member Himachal Pradesh State Assembly.

4.             BHUPENDRA PATEL BECOMES 18TH CM OF GUJARAT

              BJP leader Bhupendra Patel was sworn in by Governor Acharya Devvrat as the 18th Chief Minister (CM) of Gujarat

              Patel won the Ghatlodia seat with the largest margin of 1.92 lakh votes.

              He will serve as the CM of Gujarat for the second year in a row.

              He was sworn in as CM for the first time on September 13, 2021, replacing the Vijay Rupani-led state government.

              The ruling BJP won a record 7th term in the recently concluded Gujarat Assembly Election 2022, garnering 156 of the total 182 legislative assembly seats.

              The Congress won 17 constituencies, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won 5.

              According to Article 164 of the Indian Constitution, the Chief Minister (CM) shall be appointed by the Governor, and the other Ministers shall be appointed by the Governor on the advice of the CM, and the Ministers shall hold office during the pleasure of the Governor.

 

5.             P.T. USHA ELECTED AS THE 1ST WOMAN PRESIDENT OF INDIAN OLYMPIC ASSOCIATION

              Pilavullakandi Thekkeraparambil Usha (58 years) aka P.T. Usha, a retired Indian track and field athlete, has been named as the first woman president of Indian Olympic Association (IOA).

              She also became the First Olympian and First International Medallist to head the IOA in its 95-year-old history.

              She is also the first sports person after Maharaja Yadavindra Singh to serve as president of the IOA.

              He served as IOA President from 1938 to 1960.

              The elections for the same were held under the supervision of Supreme Court (SC)-appointed retired SC judge Lavu Nageswara Rao.

              PT USHA Known as the ‘Payyoli Express’, and hailing from Kerala, she is winner of 4 Asian gold medals and 7 Silver medals, and fourth place finisher in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics 400m hurdles final.

              In July 2022, she was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

 

6.             SHER BAHADUR DEUBA TO REMAIN AS PM OF NEPAL

              The ruling Nepali Congress party has emerged as Nepal’s single largest party after winning 89 seats in the 275-member parliament in a general election held in November 2022.

              Nepali Congress party leader Sher Bahadur Deuba, is likely to remain as Prime minister (PM).

              A five-party alliance led by the Nepali congress has won 136 seats, just two short of 138 seats required for a majority to form Government.

              The Nepal Communist Unified Marxist Leninist Party (UML), led by K P Sharma Oli, led by the ruling party’s main rival, has won 92 seats.

              The 2022 elections witnessed a new wave of youngsters challenging the old guard of Nepali politics.

 

7.             INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN DAY 2022 – DECEMBER 11

              United Nations (UN)’s International Mountain Day is annually observed across the globe on December 11 to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life.

              The theme of International Mountain Day 2022 is ‘Women move mountains’.

 

8.             UNICEF DAY 2022 – DECEMBER 11

              The United Nations Children’s Fund(UNICEF) day is annually observed across the globe on 11th December to mark the creation of UNICEF by United Nations General Assembly(UNGA) on 11th December 1946.

              UNICEF originally known as the “United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund” was started as a temporary relief fund of the United Nations(UN).

              UNICEF became a permanent part of the UN system in 1953, and was renamed as United Nations Children’s Fund but retained its acronym “UNICEF”.

9.             KERALA SEED FARM IN ALUVA IS INDIA’S 1ST CARBON NEUTRAL FARM

              Pinarayi Vijayan, Chief Minister (CM) of Kerala, declared Kerala Seed Farm in Aluva, Ernakulam district, Kerala, as the 1st Carbon Neutral Farm in India.

              The farm, located near Thuruthu, Aluva, produced 43 tonnes of carbon in 2021, although its total procurement was 213 tonnes.

              Kerala Government aims to achieve 40% of its energy need from renewable energy sources by 2025.

 

10.          WHO WORLD MALARIA REPORT 2022

              According to the World Malaria Report 2022 published by the World Health Organization (WHO), the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted attempts to control malaria, resulting in 63,000 more deaths and 13 million more infections globally over the last two years.

              Malaria is an acute febrile illness caused by Plasmodium parasites, which are transmitted to humans by the bites of infected female Anopheles mosquitoes.

              In 2021, Africa accounted for 95% of the world’s 247 million malaria infections and 6,19,000 deaths.

              More than half of all malaria deaths occurred in just four nations: Nigeria, Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Niger.

 

11.          G7 NATIONS ESTABLISH AN INTERNATIONAL CLIMATE CLUB TO FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING

              The Group of Seven (G7) major economies have established an open, international ‘Climate Club’ for countries that want to work together to combat global warming.

              Germany has held the G-7 presidency since January 1, 2022, and it will be passed on to Japan in 2023.

              The G7 consists of Germany, France, the United Kingdom (UK), Italy, Japan, Canada and the United States (US).

              The European Union (EU) is also represented at all G7 meetings.

              The new International Climate Club will be a global endeavour rather than a G-7 initiative.

              The Paris Agreement (2015), which aims to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit), will be swiftly and intensely implemented with assistance from the climate club.

              December 12, 2022, marked the 7th anniversary of the adoption of the Paris Agreement.

              The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) will construct a “climate change secretariat” in Berlin (Germany)

 

12.          WMO RELEASES GLOBAL WATER RESOURCES REPORT 2021   

              The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has published its first ‘State of Global Water Resources Report 2021’, which examines the effects of climate, environmental, and societal change on the Earth’s water resources.

              Report focuses on 3 key areas:Streamflow – the volume of water flowing through a river channel at any given time,Terrestrial Water Storage (TWS) — all water on the land surface and in the sub-surface,The Cryosphere (frozen water)

              Currently, 3.6 billion people have insufficient access to water at least once a month per year, and this figure is anticipated to rise to more than 5 billion by 2050.

              According to UN-Water, 74% of all natural catastrophes between 2001 and 2018 were water-related.

 

13.          WTA AWARDS 2022

              Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek, currently ranked World No.1 by the Women’s Tennis Association(WTA) has been honoured with the 2022 WTA Player of the Year Award for the first time for her achievements in 2022

              Czech tennis players, Barbora Krejcikova and doubles World No.1 Katerina Siniakovahave been named the WTA 2022 Doubles Team of the Year 

              Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil is named the WTA 2022 Most Improved Player of the Year

              Akane Yamaguchi of Japan won the Women’s Singles by defeating Tai Tzu-Ying of Chinese Taipei
