1. COVAXIN, COVISHIELD APPROVED FOR EMERGENCY USE

•      The Drugs Controller General of India recently approved two vaccines, COVAXIN and COVISHIELD for “Restricted Emergency Use” in India.

What is COVAXIN?

•      The COVAXIN is the COVID-19 vaccine developed by Bharat Biotech and ICMR (Indian council of Medical Research).

•      It was the first indigenous COVID-19 vaccine to be developed in the country.

What is COVISHIELD?

•      The COVISHIELD vaccine was developed by Oxford University and Astra Zeneca, the pharmaceutical company.

 

2.FSSAI NEW TRANS FAT LEVELS

•      The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India recently announced that all edible refined oils, vegetable fat spreads, Vanaspati, margarines, Bakery shortening and mixed fat spreads can contain only 3% or less trans fats.

•      This is to be implemented by January 2021.  

•      By January 2022, this is to be further reduced to 2%.

•      This is being introduced because the World Health Organisation has called for global elimination of trans fat by 2023.

 

3.WORLD BRAILLE DAY: JANUARY 4

•      The World Braille Day is celebrated on January 4 by United Nations and several other international organizations

•      It is celebrated on January 4 because the day marks the birthday of Louis Braille, the creator of this writing system.

•      He was born in France in 1809.

 

4.NATIONAL METROLOGY CONCLAVE

•      The Prime Minister Narendra Modi is to deliver an inaugural address at the National Metrology Conclave in New Delhi on January 4, 2021.

•      Theme of National Metrology Conclave 2021 is Metrology for the Inclusive Growth of the Nation.

 

5.IFSCA IN IOSCO           

•      The International Financial Services Centres Authority recently became an associate member of the International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO).

What is IOSCO?

•      The International Organization of Securities Organizations is an association of national securities regulatory commissions spread all over the world.

•      It includes, the Financial Service Authority (UK), Exchange commission & Securities in (US) and 100 other similar bodies.

 

6.40TH INDIAN SCIENTIFIC EXPEDITION TO ANTARCTICA

•      The Government of India recently launched the 40th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica.

•      The expectation will e take a team of 40 members to Antarctica and return by April 2021.

•      Name of the Indian Research base stations in Antarctica are Dakshin Gangotri, Bharti, Maitri.

 

7.KARNATAKA’S HUBBALLI RAILWAY STATION TO GET WORLD LONGEST RAILWAY PLATFORM

•      Karnataka’s Hubballi Railway station officially Shree Siddharoodha Swamiji railway station is set to get the “world’s longest railway platform” of 1500 plus meters’ length and 10 meters width.

•      The platform will be inaugurated in March 2021.

 

8.SOMA MONDAL BECOMES 1ST WOMAN CHAIRMAN OF SAIL

•      SAIL is one of the largest steel-making companies in India.

•      It is the Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprises(CPSE).
