1. ACCIDENTAL DEATHS & SUICIDES IN INDIA 2019 REPORT

·          The National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB), Ministry of Home Affairs released an annual report titled “Accidental Deaths and Suicides in India(ADSI) 2019”.

·          This is NCRB’s 53rd edition of the series which was started in 1967.

·          Delhi recorded the highest number of deaths due to dangerous driving and overall road accidents in 2019.

·          In Chennai and Bengaluru, 1,258 and 768 persons died in road accidents respectively.

·          The report states that around 139,123 people died by suicide in India during 2019.Maharashtra (18,916), Tamil Nadu (13,493), West Bengal (12,665), Madhya Pradesh (12457) and Karnataka (11,288) accounts for 49% of the suicides in India.

 

2. CYCLING SUMMIT IN 2021

·          Cycling Federation of India(CFI) is set to host the first ever Cycling Summit in 2021 in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.

·          The one-day summit is designed with an aim to promote the culture of cycling and sharing of knowledge between beginner and professional cyclists.

·          On 1st September 2020, CFI signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) for the 2021 summit with Contarctica, a marketing exploration firm.

1. “VRIKSHAROPAN ABHIYAN” OF THE COAL MINISTRY
·        Amit Shah launched ‘Vriksharopan Abhiyan’ the tree plantation campaign of the Coal Ministry in the presence of Shri Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister of Coal, Mines and Parliamentary Affairs.
·        6 lakh seedlings have been planted across 600 acres.The Plantation campaign coincides the anniversaries of Lokmanya Balgangadhar Tilak and Chandrashekhar Azad, who devoted their life for service of the nation.
·        The Government has set a target of one billion tonnes production of coal per annum by 2023-24.

2. INDIA’S MATERNAL MORTALITY RATIO DECLINED TO 113 IN 2016-18
·        In accordance with the “Special Bulletin on Maternal Mortality in India 2016-18”, released by the Office of the Registrar General’s Sample Registration System (SRS), the Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) in India has declined to 113 in 2016-18 from 122 in 2015-17 and 130 in 2014-2016 and almost 100 deaths lesser than in the period of 2007-2009.
·        The southern States registered a lower MMR — Andhra Pradesh (65), Telangana (63), Karnataka (92), Kerala (43) and Tamil Nadu (60) as compared to states of Assam & EAG viz. Assam (215), Bihar (149), Madhya Pradesh (173), Chhattisgarh (159), Odisha (150), Rajasthan (164), Uttar Pradesh (197), Uttarakhand (99) and Jharkhand (71). 
·        The target of United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of 3.1 is to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio to less than 70 per 1,00,000 live births.
·        Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) is defined as the proportion of maternal deaths per 1,00,000 live births, reported under the SRS.

3. APSEZ BECOMES THE 1ST INDIAN PORT TO SIGN UP FOR THE SBTi
·        Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) becomes the 1st Indian port and 7th Port globally to sign up for the Science-Based Targets initiative(SBTi).
·        By signing the commitment letter to SBTi, APSEZ is committed to set science-based emissions reduction targets(across their entire value chain) that keep global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
·        The science based targets are greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets that are in line with the level of decarbonisation required to meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement ie., to control global warming below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursue efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C.

1. INDIA’S FIRST 700 MWE UNIT TO ACHIEVE CRITICALITY NFR
·        The Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited(NPCIL) announced that, Unit-3 of Kakrapar Atomic Power Project(KAPP-3), India’s First 700 MWe (megawatt electric) and indigenously developed Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor(PHWR) in Surat, Gujarat achieved its first criticality – initiation of controlled and sustained nuclear fission reaction.
·        KAPP-3 is India’s 23rd nuclear power reactor that is completely designed and built by India.
·        The reactor uses natural Uranium as the fuel and Heavy water as moderator.

2. INDIA TO HAVE 60% RENEWABLE ENERGY BY 2030
·        Raj Kumar Singh, Minister of State(MoS)(IC) Power and New & Renewable Energy stated that India will have around 60% of the installed capacity of the electricity generation from renewable resources by 2030, in the webinar on Energy Transition at the second pre-event hosted by The World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) 2021 in collaboration with Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) India.
·        Prime Minister Modi announced that India will increase the renewable energy target to 450 GW by 2030 from 175 GW by 2022, in the United Nations(UN) Climate Action Summit held in September 2019.
·        R K Singh highlighted the progress of India on clean energy and stated that including the projects under development and hydroelectric power the clean energy capacity of India is around 190 GW which is higher than the targeted 175 GW by 2022.

1. ITUC GLOBAL RIGHTS INDEX 2020
·     In accordance with the 7th edition of “International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) Global Rights Index 2020-The World’s Worst Countries for Workers”, India became the new entrant in the 10 worst countries for working people in the world, with a rating of 5 that states “No guarantee of rights”.
·     The index ranked 144 countries on the basis of respect for workers’ rights.
·     The other countries among the worst ten are- Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia,  Kazakhstan, Philippines, Turkey and Zimbabwe along with Egypt & Honduras being the other two new entrants apart from India.
·     India’s ranking was based on three factors viz. Mass dismissals, Brutal repression of strikes, and Regressive laws.

2. AZAD PATTAN HYDEL POWER PROJECT IN POK
·     Pakistan and Gezhouba Group Company Limited of China signed an Engineer Procurement and Contract (EPC) agreement for the 700 MW Azad Pattan Hydel Power Project on Jhelum River in the Sudhnoti District of Pakistan occupied Kashmir(PoK). 
·     Imran Khan, Prime Minister of Pakistan witnessed the signing in a ceremony in Islamabad.
·     This 1.5 billion USD project is a 2nd power project under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor(CPEC).

1. INDIA-EU (VIRTUAL) SUMMIT HELD VIRTUALLY
·        15th summit between India and the European Union (EU) was held virtually where India was represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the EU was represented by Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission.
·        India-EU endorsed “EU-India Strategic Partnership: A Roadmap to 2025” as a common roadmap to guide joint action and further strengthen the EU-India Strategic Partnership over the next five years.
·        There was signing of the Euratom-India Agreement between EURATOM and the Department of Atomic Energy of India on research and development cooperation in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy. 
·        The 27 nation EU is India’s largest trading partner for goods with trade exceeding 100 billion dollars, while India is the E.U.’s ninth biggest trading partner. 
·        There is an upcoming planned investment of €550 million in the Pune (Maharashtra) and Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) Metro Rail Projects by European Investment Bank (EIB) in Luxembourg. 

2. GOVT TO INCREASE PUBLIC HEALTH EXPENDITURE TO 2.5% OF GDP BY 2025
·        In a meeting with the 15th Finance Commission the Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan highlighted that the government aims to gradually increase the public health expenditure to 2.5% of Gross Domestic Product(GDP) by 2025.

·        The government under the Aayushman Bharat programme proposes to establish 1.5 lakh health and wellness centres by 2022. Of this about 19,000 have been already established. 

·        Government has announced 4% health and education cess on personal income tax and corporation tax. Earlier it was 3%.

1. INDIA’S FIRST E-LOK ADALAT
·        Chhattisgarh State Legal Service Authority and the high Court organised India’s first e-Lok Adalat to ensure the administration of justice and to solve the financial crisis of the parties and lawyers amid COVID-19 pandemic.
·        The high court Chief Justice P R Ramchandra Menon inaugurated the e-Lok Adalat through video conferencing.
·        Lok Adalat is one of the alternative dispute grievance mechanisms or a forum where pending cases or disputes in the court of law are settled or compromised whereas e-lok adalat will be handled virtually.

2. BECOMING THE SECOND-LARGEST FOREIGN INVESTOR IN UK
·        According to the United Kingdom’s government’s figures released on 10 July 2020, India has become the second largest Forign Direct Investor in the United Kingdom (UK) after the United States in 2019, by investing in 120 projects and creating 5,429 new jobs in the UK.
·        India increased with a 4% FDI increase for the UK on 2018-19 with 1,852 new inward investment projects in the 2019/2020 financial year. 

3. 2020 DADA SAHEB PHALKE AWARD FOR ‘CHI LUPO’
·        An independent filmmaker, Kezang D Thongdok won the 2020 Dada Saheb Phalke Award for his documentary “Chi Lupo” – showcasing the practice of collection of honey from the perched rocky hilltops.
·        The documentary Chi Lupo portrays the customs and practices of the Shertukpen community.
·        The Chi in the title of the documentary refers to honey and Lupo refers to hunter. 

4. GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES ASEEM PORTAL
·        Dr Mahendra Nath Pandey , Union Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship(MoSDE) launched the Aatamanirbhar  Skilled Employee-Employer Mapping (ASEEM) portal, which maps the demand of skilled workforce to find available sustainable livelihood opportunities.
·        ASEEM is available as an online portal and mobile application developed and managed by National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in collaboration with Betterplace, a Bengaluru based company.

5. IAF RECEIVED LAST 5 AH-64E APACHE ATTACK HELICOPTERS
·        US based Aerospace Company Boeing, has delivered the last 5 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters to Indian Air Force (IAF) at the Air Force Station, Hindan, Uttar Pradesh.
·        This final 5 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters were part of a deal that was signed by Indian Government & Boeing in the year 2015 to deliver 22 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters .
·        Also the Chinook is a transport helicopter for carrying troops, artillery guns and other equipment.

6. BOOK-‘A SONG OF INDIA’
·        The book titled  ‘A Song of India’ authored  by Ruskin Bond  to be released on July 20, 2020, which will mark the 70th year of the author’s literary career.
·        The book is the 4th  installment in his memoir series(a written record of a person’s own life and experiences).
·         The book portrays his unknown life before he became a successful author.
·        His memoir series are, “Looking for the Rainbow” (2017), “Till the Clouds Roll By” (2017) and “Coming Round the Mountain” (2019).

7. WORLD POPULATION DAY 2020: JULY 11
·        Theme of 2020– The theme of 2020 is to safeguard the sexual and reproductive health care, protect the health and rights of women and girls, and end gender-based violence.
·        “Putting the brakes on COVID-19: Safeguarding the health and rights of women and girls’’

1. REWA SOLAR PROJECT IN MADHYA PRADESH
·        Asia’s largest solar power project: Rewa Ultra Mega Solar Power Project in Madhya Pradesh is inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi, through video conferencing.
·        The 750 MW ultra-solar power plant spread over 1,590 acres.
·        It reduces emission equivalent to 15 lakh tonne of carbon dioxide per year.
·        The Delhi Metro will get 24% of energy from the project, and the 76% will be supplied to state DISCOMs of Madhya Pradesh.
·        The Rewa Solar Power project received the World Bank Group President’s Award. 

2. FIRST FIVE RE-PRINTED VOLUMES OF MONGOLIAN KANJUR MANUSCRIPTS
·        Under the National Mission for Manuscripts (NMM), The Ministry of Culture has taken up the project of re-printing 108 volumes of Mongolian Kanjur.
·        A set of First Five manuscripts were presented to Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India on Guru Purnima (Dharma Chakra Day) on 4th July 2020.
·        The Buddhist Canonical text in 108 volumes is the most important religious text in Mongolia.‘Kanjur’ means ‘Concise Orders’, the words of Lord Buddha.
·        The ‘Mongolian Kanjur’ in 108 volumes was published by Prof. Lokesh Chandra (Former MP of Rajya Sabha) in India in the 1970s.
