1.       KARNATAKA’S HOYSALA TEMPLES NOMINATED FOR UNESCO’S WORLD HERITAGE SITES LIST 2022-2023

·         The Hoysala temples of Belur, Halebid and Somnathapura, the ‘Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala’,  in Karnataka have been finalised as India’s nomination for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCOs) World Heritage List for the year 2022-2023.

·         These Hoysala Temples have been on UNESCO’s Tentative list since April 15, 2014, for its rich historical and cultural heritage of India.

2.       NORTH KOREA TEST FIRES INTERMEDIATE RANGE BALLISTIC MISSILE “HWASONG-12”

·         North Korea successfully test fired Intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), :Hwasong-12″ from North Korea’s Jagang Province toward the East Sea. 

·         The missile flew about 800 km (497 miles) with the maximum altitude reaching 2,000 km (1,243 miles).

·         At full power and at a standard trajectory, the missile can travel as far as 4,000km.

·         It is estimated that it has an operational range between 3,700 to 6,000 km.

3.       INDIAN NAVY CONDUCTS FLIGHT TESTS OF RAFALE-M FIGHTER JET 

·         The Indian Navy successfully flight tested the marine version of French-made Rafale-Maritime (Rafale-M) fighter jets at Shore Based Test Facility at Indian Navy Ship (INS) Hansa in Goa.

·         The Rafale-M is pitted against the US-made Super Hornet, both of which are being evaluated for possible purchase by the Indian Navy for deployment on the 44,000-tonne INS Vikrant.

·         INS Vikrant which is codenamed as Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 1 (IAC 1), is an aircraft carrier constructed by the Cochin Shipyard for the Indian Navy that is currently in sea trials near the Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.

 

4.       WORLD WETLANDS DAY 2022 – FEBRUARY 2 

·         The United Nations(UN)’s World Wetlands Day is annually observed across the globe on 2nd February to create awareness about the critical importance of Wetlands and their roles in maintaining the natural cycles and supporting a wide range of biodiversity.

·         The theme of World Wetlands Day 2022 is “Wetlands Action for People and Nature”.

5.       INDIA & NEPAL SIGNS MOU TO CONSTRUCT BRIDGE OVER MAHAKALI RIVER

·         India and Nepal signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the construction of a motorable bridge over the Mahakali River connecting Dharchula (India) with Darchula (Nepal), under Indian grant assistance.

·         The bridge is about 110-metre and is the second motor bridge on the India-Nepal border in Uttarakhand.

·         The other one is the Banbasa bridge in Champawat, Uttarakhand.

·         Nepal President – Bidya Devi Bhandari.

 

6.       INDIA SIGNS COOPERATION AGREEMENT WITH SKAO

·         India signed an interim agreement to confirm commitment to work on the mega astronomy project, Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO). 

·         SKAO is proposed to be the world’s largest radio telescope, which will be established in South Africa and Australia.

·         Prof Yashwant Gupta, centre director  of National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) and Prof Phil Diamond, director general of SKA signed the agreement.

·         NCRA  is within the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), working in the SKA’s development since the 1990s. 

·         In 2021, the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) Council approved the establishment of the world’s largest radio telescope, SKA Telescope.

·         In 2020, the SKA Organisation graduated to becoming the SKA Council, an umbrella body to plan, undertake and oversee the construction of SKA Observatory.

·         India was a member of SKA Organisation but it is yet to become a member of SKA Council.

·         Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Organization is a private organization dedicated to  radio astronomy.

7.       FORMER SPORTS SECRETARY RAVI MITTAL APPOINTED AS NEW CHAIRPERSON OF IBBI

·         Ravi Mittal, former secretary of the department of sports is appointed as the new Chairperson of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI) for a period of 5 years or till the age of 65, whichever is early.

·         Ravi Mittal will take over from Navrang Saini

·         IBBI was established on 1st October 2016, under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (Code).

8.       IISC COMMISSIONS PARAM PRAVEGA, INDIA’S ONE OF THE POWERFUL SUPERCOMPUTERS

·         The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has installed and commissioned ‘Param Pravega’, one of the most powerful supercomputers in India, and the largest in an Indian academic institution under the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM).

·         The system has a total supercomputing capacity of 3.3 petaflops (1 petaflop equals a quadrillion or 1,015 operations per second).

 

9.       RBI CANCELS LICENCE OF MAHARASHTRA-BASED INDEPENDENCE CO-OPERATIVE BANK

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), has cancelled the licence of Independence Co-operative Bank Limited in Nashik, Maharashtra and ceases to carry on banking business, with effect from 3rd February 2022, as the bank does not have adequate capital and earning prospects to pay its present depositors in full. 

·         The bank does not comply with the provisions of Section 11(1) and Section 22 (3) (d) read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

·         The continuance of the bank is prejudicial to the interests of its depositors.

·         Following the cancellation of the licence, the bank is prohibited from conducting the ‘banking’ business (including acceptance of deposits and repayment of deposits) as defined in  Section 5(b) read with Section 56 of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949.

·         Credit issue to the Bank’s Depositors (Under DICGC Act, 1961): On liquidation, every depositor will receive deposit insurance claim amount of his/her deposits up to a monetary ceiling of Rs. 5,00,000 (Rupees Five lakh only) from Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC) subject to the provisions of the DICGC Act, 1961. 

·         Liquidation is the process of converting a company’s assets into cash and using those funds to repay the company’s debts as much as possible.

 

10.    ‘TATA SKY’ REBRANDS ITSELF AS ‘TATA PLAY’

·         Tata Sky, one of the largest Direct to Home (DTH) platforms, has rebranded itself as ‘Tata Play’ to expand its television-cum-OTT (Over-The-Top) offerings in combined packages.

·         Tata Play has added Netflix to 13 OTT services, including Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar, as part of its ‘Binge packs’.

·         Tata Play Limited is a joint venture between Tata Sons and TFCF Corporation (formerly known as Twenty-First Century Fox, Inc.) and is now a part of the Walt Disney Company.

 

11.    SAMSUNG SURPASSES INTEL AS WORLD’S TOP SEMICONDUCTOR COMPANY IN 2021

·         According to the report released by Counterpoint Technology Market Research, South Korean electronics manufacturing giant, Samsung Electronics replaced United States (U.S) chipmaker Intel’s first position in World’s Top Semiconductor Company in 2021.

 

12.    REPUBLIC DAY PARADE 2022: UTTAR PRADESH SELECTED AS BEST STATE TABLEAU

·         Uttar Pradesh (UP) was selected as best state tableau of 73rd Republic Day parade 2022 on Rajpath along with Maharashtra (MH) that won in popular choice category and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) was named as the best marching contingent among Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). 

·         The tableau of UP has been selected as the best tableau among the 12 States/UTs.

·         In the Best Central Ministries/Departments, a total of 9 tableaux of Central Ministries/Departments had participated in the parade.

·         MH took first place in the best state tableau under people’s choice awards.

 

13.    IOC APPROVES INCLUSION OF SURFING, SKATEBOARDING & SPORT CLIMBING IN 2028 OLYMPICS AT LOS ANGELES 

·         The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a proposal to include Surfing, Skateboarding and Sport Climbing for the 2028 Summer Olympics Games that will be organized in Los Angeles (LA), United States (US).

·         The 2028 Summer Olympics are officially known as  the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad, or Los Angeles 2028 is a forthcoming event scheduled to take place from July 21 – August 6, 2028, in Los Angeles, California, US.

·         The 2024 Summer Olympics games will be organized in Paris, France. With this Paris becomes only the second city to host 3  Summer Olympic games.

 

14.    WORLD CANCER DAY 2022 – FEBRUARY 4

·         World Cancer Day is annually observed across the globe on 4th February to create awareness about Cancer and prevent the millions of deaths due to cancer. The day also aims to educate the general public about cancer.

·         The Campaign theme of World Cancer Day for 2022 to 2024 is “Close the Care Gap”.

·         The Campaign theme of World Cancer Day 2022 is “Close the Care Gap- Realising the problem”.

·         World Cancer Day is an initiative of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), the largest and oldest international cancer organisation.
