1. 2017 ARCTIC ENERGY SUMMIT HELD IN FINLAND
i. The 2017 Arctic Energy Summit will be held in Helsinki, Finland. It will be hosted by the Institute of the North and Finland Ministry of Economy and Employment.
ii. The 2017 Arctic Energy Summit builds on the Sustainable Development Working Group’s. It addresses energy as a fundamental element of the sustainable development of the  2017 Arctic Energy Summit Arctic, and occurs during Finland’s Chairmanship of the Arctic Council.
iii. The AES is a multi-disciplinary event expected to draw several hundred industry officials, scientists, policy makers, academics, energy professionals and community leaders together to collaborate and share leading approaches on Arctic energy issues.

2. INDIA’S ANSHU JAMSENPA BECOMES 1ST INDIAN WOMAN TO CONQUER MT EVEREST TWICE WITHIN 5 DAYS
i. India’s Anshu Jamsenpa has become the 1st woman to conquer Mount Everest twice within five days.
ii. Jamsenpa set the world record becoming the first woman climber to make double ascent in five days’ time. She is also the 1st Indian woman to scale Mt Everest for the 5th time.
iii. Brij Mohan Sharma, popularly known as Breeze Sharma has become the 1st civilian from the Indian Navy to summit Mount Everest.


3. JAIPUR LITERATURE FESTIVAL KICKED OFF IN LONDON
i. The Jaipur Literature Festival was inaugurated in London on 21st of May, 2017. At the festival South Asia’s literary heritage, oral and performing arts, books and ideas, dialogue and debate are presented.
ii. This year marks the 4th London edition of the festival, which has its roots in the Pink City of Jaipur where it marked its 10th anniversary in January this year.
iii. The British Library is the 2nd largest library in the world and it presented number of items catalogued, played host to the annual festival.
iv. Indian High Commissioner to the UK Yashvardhan Kumar Sinha opened the 2-day event’s proceedings at the world- famous library.

4. DEVESHWAR, SOUMITRA CHATTERJEE CONFERRED BENGAL’S HIGHEST CIVILIAN AWARD
i. India’s longest serving boss Y.C. Deveshwar and Thespian Soumitra Chatterjee have been conferred with the Banga Samman by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
ii. It is the West Bengal’s highest civilian award. Two categories of awards are presented as part of Banga Samman – Banga Bhushan and Banga Bibhushan.
iii. This year recipients of Banga Bhushan are Bangladeshi singer Rezwana Chowdhury Banya, folk singer Hidmat Fakir, Chapal Bhaduri.

5. IN TRIBUTE TO APJ ABDUL KALAM, NASA NAMES NEW SPECIES AFTER HIM
i. A newly discovered organism found on the International Space Station has been named after APJ Abdul Kalam by NASA.
ii. The name of the bacterium is Solibacillus kalamii the species name is after Dr Abdul Kalam and genus name is Solibacillus which is a spore forming bacteria.
iii. The filter on which the new bug was found remained on board the International Space Station for 40 months. The new organism which is a form of bacteria has been found only on the International Space Station and has not been found on Earth.

6. WORLD DAY FOR CULTURAL DIVERSITY FOR DIALOGUE AND DEVELOPMENT
i. The World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development was observed on 21 May.
ii. Its objective is to bridge the gap between different cultures. In December 2002, the UN General Assembly in its resolution declared 21 May as the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development.
iii. The day aims to deepen the understanding of the values of cultural diversity. To advance the 4 goals of the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions:
a) Support sustainable systems of governance for culture.
b) Achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase mobility of artists and cultural professionals.
c) Promote human rights and fundamental freedoms.
d) Integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks.
