1. ELECTION COMMISSION GRANTS NATIONAL PARTY STATUS TO NPP
The Election Commission of India granted the National party status to National People’s Party led by Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma. It becomes the first Party from North East region to get this tag.
It becomes the eighth national party in the country among All India Trinamool Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, BSP, CPI, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Indian National Congress and NCP parties.
It is getting status of state party in four states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya and Nagaland.

2. PRIME MINISTER NARENDRA MODI’S VISIT TO MALDIVES AND SRI LANKA
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi visited the Republic of Maldives at the invitation of Mr. Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, President of the Republic of Maldives to strengthen the bilateral ties, reflecting the importance India attached to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
This was the first overseas visit of the Prime Minister after his re-election.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Maldives’ highest honour “Rule of Nishan Izzuddeen” by the President of Maldives.
Prime Minister Modi visited Sri Lanka at the invitation of Mr. Maithripala Sirisena, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. On second leg of PM’s first foreign visit to Sri Lanka, he was received by the Lankan counterpart Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Bandaranaike International Airport.

1. INDIA’S FIRST DINOSAUR MUSEUM INAUGURATED IN GUJARAT
Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the new Dinosaur Museum-cum-Park at Raiyoli village in Balasinor town of Mahisagar district.
This is the first such park in the country and also the world’s third park which exhibits remains of various dinosaurs and fossil records.
3D projection, 360 degrees virtual reality presentations, interactive kiosks, gaming consoles are the facilities equipped with the museum.

2. G20 MINISTERIAL MEETING HELD IN JAPAN
The G20 Ministerial meeting on Trade and Digital Economy was held in Tsukuba city, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan.
The Indian delegation for G20 Ministerial Meeting was led by the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry & Railways, Piyush Goyal.
G-20 surveillance note expected that Indian economy will grow 7.3% in 2019 and 7.5% in 2020. This was prepared by the staff of International Monetary Fund.

1. ESTONIA, NIGER, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES, TUNISIA, VIETNAM ELECTED TO UNSC AS NON-PERMANENT MEMBERS
Estonia, Niger, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam were elected to United Nations Security Council as Non-permanent Members for a 2-year term beginning January 1, 2020.
The Security Council has 15 members – 5 permanent members namely China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom & the United States and 10 non-permanent members who are elected for two-year terms by the General Assembly.
At present, 10 non-permanent members are Belgium, Cte d’Ivoire, Dominican Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Germany, Indonesia, Kuwait, Peru, Poland and South Africa.

2. WORLD’S MOST PUNCTUAL AIRLINE TAG WON BY SRILANKAN AIRLINES
Sri Lanka’s state-run Srilankan Airlines has been named the world’s most punctual airline by flight data analysis company Flightstats.com. 
This is the second consecutive time in less than 12 months that Sri Lankan has achieved this milestone.
LATAM Airlines was in second place, All Nippon Airways was in third place.

1. GOVERNMENT LAUNCHED SWACHH SURVEKSHAN 2020 LEAGUE
Union housing and urban affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri launched Swachh Survekshan 2020 League in New Delhi.
It will be a cleanliness assessment of cities and towns in India on quarterly basis. The 5th edition of the annual cleanliness survey of urban India to be conducted between January – February 2020.
It is aimed at “sustaining the on ground performance of cities along with continuous monitoring of service level performance on cleanliness”.
The purpose of quarterly cleanliness assessment is that many cities and towns slip back once they get a decent ranking on cleanliness levels in annual sanitation survey exercise Swachh Survekshan.

2. FINCARE SFB, KOOKMIN BANK ADDED IN SECOND SCHEDULE OF RBI ACT
Fincare Small Finance Bank and Kookmin Bank have been included in the second schedule of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
Both banks can now broad-base its lines of funding and liquidity facilities. They can issue certificates of deposits and get access to interbank borrowings at competitive interest rates.
They can also get deposits from new sources such as governments, public sector undertakings, corporates, mutual funds, insurance companies and other market participants.

1. PM NARENDRA MODI RECONSTITUTED NITI AAYOG
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi approved the reconstitution of government’s policy think tank, National Institution for Transforming India Aayog.
Rajiv Kumar was retained as the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog whereas economist Bibek Debroy, a full-time member,was dropped from the team.
V K Saraswat, Ramesh Chand and Dr V K Paul will continue as the members of NITI Aayog.

2. DR HARSH VARDHAN REVIEWED THE STATUS OF NIPAH VIRUS DISEASE IN KERALA
Dr Harsh Vardhan, Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, reviewed the status of Nipah Virus Disease in Kerala. As of now, 15 people are under observation in the state.
The Indian Council of Medical Research has permitted the Kerala Government to establish a regional Biosafety Level-3 laboratory in Kozhikode district. The estimated cost for the project is Rs. 8 crores.
Nipah virus is transmitted from animals to humans and then spreads through people to people contact, causing respiratory illness. Its symptoms include fever, muscle pain, headache, fever, dizziness, and nausea.

1. MUMBAI RANKED MOST CONGESTED CITY IN THE WORLD, DELHI RANKED 4TH: TRAFFIC INDEX 2018
The recent study “Traffic Index 2018”, analysis of current status of traffic mobility was conducted.
Mumbai is the most traffic congested city among 403 cities in 56 countries with a congestion level of 65 per cent, while New Delhi ranked fourth with a congestion of 58 per cent.
Top five most congested North American are in the list are: Mexico City (52 per cent), Los Angeles (41 per cent), Vancouver (38 per cent), New York (36 per cent) and San Francisco (34 per cent).

2. SECOND BI-MONTHLY MONETARY POLICY OF RBI 2019-20
The 2nd Bi-Monthly monetary policy statement has been released. On the basis of an assessment of the current and evolving macroeconomic situation, the Monetary Policy Committee at its meeting decided to:
Reduce the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility by 25 basis points to 5.75% from 6.00% with immediate effect.
Consequently, the reverse repo rate under the LAF stands adjusted to 5.50%, and the marginal standing facility rate and the Bank Rate to 6.0%.
The Reserve Bank of India lowered the economic growth forecast for the current fiscal to 7% due to a slowdown in domestic activities and escalation in global trade war.

1. DRAFT NATIONAL EDUCATION POLICY 2019 SUBMITTED BY DR. KASTURIRANGAN COMMITTEE
The Kasturirangan committee has revised the Draft New National Education Policy and effected some changes in the three-language formula.
The committee informed the government that there had been an inadvertent error in the draft submitted for public feedback. The committee stated the revised draft has now been uploaded for feedback from states and the public for a period of 30 days.

2. KHARGA PRAHAR EXERCISE CONCLUDED IN PUNJAB
A week-long exercise between the Indian army and the Indian Air Force – Kharga Prahar concluded in Punjab.
The exercise was undertaken by various units and formation of Kharga Corps. The key aspects of this exercise are to validate operational aspects and brought out many lessons to the corps.

1. IAF AN-32 AIRCRAFT WENT MISSING IN ASSAM
IAF AN-32 Aircraft, taken off from Jorhat, Assam headed towards Mechuka in Arunachal Pradesh went missing with 13 people. The AN-32 was inducted into the IAF in the 1980s.
The Aircraft consisted of 8 crew members, including 6 officers led by a Wing Commander and 5 passengers.
Similar cases were registered in 2009 and 2016. In June 9, 2009, an IAF AN-32 had crashed over Rinchi Hill near Heyo Village, West Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, which killed 13 personnel and the biggest IAF AN-32 crash took place on July 22, 2016 when the aircraft went off the radars over the Bay of Bengal which killed 29 people.

2. INDIA RANKED 95TH IN 129 COUNTRIES IN NEW GENDER EQUALITY INDEX
India was ranked 95th among 129 countries in new Sustainable Development Goals Gender Equality Index with 56.2 scores.
The gender gap index of the World Economic Forum had ranked India with 108.
The list was topped by Denmark followed by Finland and Sweeden.
Chad was placed at bottom most position (129th).

1. BANK FRAUDS REACHED UNPRECEDENTED RS 71,500 CRORE IN 2018-19: RBI
The Reserve Bank of India has reported that bank frauds have been reached to Rs 71,500 crore in 2018-19 with over 6,800 cases. In 2017-18, 5,916 cases were reported by banks which involved Rs 41,167.03 crore
RBI’s data reported that in last 11 fiscal years, 53,334 cases of fraud were reported by banks involving the amount of Rs 2.05 lakh crore.

2. ONGC OVERTAKES IOC TO BECOME A MOST PROFITABLE PSU
ONGC, India’s top oil and gas producer, has toppled Indian Oil Corp to regain the crown of being the country’s most profitable public sector company. According to earnings statements of the listed companies, Oil and Natural Gas Corp reported a 34 percent jump it’s in 2018-19 fiscal net profit to Rs 26,716 crore.
In comparison, IOC registered a net profit of Rs 17.274 crore for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2019. ONGC, in the previous two financial years, had lost the most profitable PSU tag to IOC.

1. UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN INDIA AT 6.1% IN 2017-18
According to a survey conducted by NSSO, the unemployment rate was about 6.1% in 2017-18, highest in 45 year since 1972-73.
Unemployment was higher in urban areas as compared to rural. The unemployment rate in rural areas was about 5.3% while in urban areas it was about 7.8%.
6.2% males and 5.7% females are jobless in India. The unemployment rate is highest amount urban females at 10.8% followed by urban males at 7.1 % rural males at 5.8% and rural females at 3.8 %.

2. INFANT MORTALITY RATE IN INDIA FALLS BUT THE PACE OF CHANGE SLOWS
India’s infant mortality rate declined by 9 positions from 42 in 2012 to 33 in 2017.
Madhya Pradesh and Assam had the worst IMR of 47 and 44 respectively while Kerala and Tamil Nadu recorded the lowest IMR of 10 and 16 respectively.
This is a cause of worry for India that India’s IMR is even today worse than those of South Asian neighbours, Srilanka, Bangladesh, Nepal.
Among the states Odisha and Uttarpradesh showed the biggest improvement between 2012 and 2017.

1. CABINET APPROVED HIKE IN RATES OF SCHOLARSHIP UNDER NATIONAL DEFENCE FUND
In the first meeting of Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved major changes in the PM’s Scholarship Scheme under the National Defence Fund. The Cabinet has increased the rates of scholarship from Rs 2,000 per month to Rs 2,500 per month for boys and Rs 2,250 per month to Rs 3,000 per month for girls.
The scope of the PM’s Scholarship has also extended to the wards of State Police officials who were martyred during the terror and naxal attacks.
This has been implemented under scheme of ‘Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme’ for encouraging technical and post-graduate education for the widows and wards of the deceased and ex-service personnel of Armed Forces, Para Military Forces and Railway Protection Forces.

2. CABINET APPROVED RS 3,000 PENSION FOR SMALL TRADERS
Cabinet meeting chaired by PM Modi has approved to give monthly pension of Rs 3,000 to small traders, businessmen, and shopkeepers after they attain the age of 60 years.
The aim is to provide universal social security to all shopkeepers, retail traders and self-employed persons a monthly pension under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Pension Yojana.
Those person who have attained 29 years of age will have to make a monthly investment of Rs 100 and those who have attained the age of 40 years will have to make a monthly investment of Rs 200.

1. 10TH NATIONAL SCIENCE FILM FESTIVAL OF INDIA TO BE HELD IN TRIPURA
In an effort to raise awareness about science and environment through films, the 10th National Science Film Festival of India will be organised in Tripura in January and February 2020.
The NSFFI debuted in Chennai eight years ago in 2011. It has covered almost all regions of the country since then including Bhubaneshwar, Kolkata, Bangalore, Lucknow, Mumbai, Guwahati and Mohali. This the second time the show will be held in a North Eastern city.

The 72nd session of the World Health Organisations World Health Assembly held in Geneva, Switzerland.
The theme of this year is “Universal Health Coverage: Leaving no one behind”.
WHO appointed four new goodwill ambassadors for promoting global health.
  • Ellen Johnson Sirleaf – He was former President of Liberia.
  • Cynthia Germanotaa – She is President of “Born This Way Foundation”
  • Alisson Becker – He is goalkeeper of the Brazilian and Liverpool football team
  • Natalia Loewe Becker – She is medical doctor and health advocate from Brazil.

2. INDIA RANKED 43RD IN COMPETITIVENESS, SINGAPORE TOPPED THE CHART
India ranked 43rd most competitive economy in the world.
Singapore topped the chart followed by Hong Kong SAR and US at the 2nd and 3rd spot.
UAE first time entered into the top 5 rankings. Last year in 2018 UAE ranked 7th.
Venezuela ranked last in the rankings due to high inflation, poor access to credit and weak economy.

1. IAF CHIEF B S DHANOA LEADS ‘MISSING MAN’ FORMATION IN TRIBUTE TO HEROES OF KARGIL
Recently, Indian Air Force’s Air Chief Marshal B S Dhanoa flew the ‘missing man’ formation in a MiG-21 aircraft to pay tributes to Squadran Leader Ajay Ahuja and heroes of the Kargil war. Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief Western Air Command Air Marshal R Nambiar also companied B S Dhanoa in the flypast organised at Air Force Station in Bhisiana.
B S Dhanoa led a four MiG-21 aircraft ‘Missing Men’ to honour the valour and supreme sacrifice of men who were killed in action during ‘Operation Safed Sagar’ at Kargil, J&K.

2. GDP GROWTH IN Q4 LIKELY TO MODERATE TO 6.1-5.9%: SBI REPORT
According to the Ecowrap Report of State Bank of India, GDP growth in the fourth quarter ended March 2019 is likely to moderate to 6.1-5.9%. As a result, entire growth rate for fiscal 2018-19 can be slipped down to below 7%.
The dip in growth rate may propel the Reserve Bank of India to cut rates to 0.50%. 1% point cut in the Cash reserve Ratio can release Rs 1.28 lakh crore, reducing lending rates by 0.15% and improve banks’ profitability by Rs 12,000 crore annually.
The growth estimated for January-March period is at 6.1-5.9% leading to annual growth rate of 6.9%.
The Gross Value Added growth for Q4, FY 19 is estimated at 6% or it could be slipped marginally below 6% at 5.9%.

1. GOVERNMENT PLANS TO MERGE CSO AND NSSO
Central government has decided to merge two institutions the Central Statistical Organisation and the National Sample Survey Office to create new statistical body National Statistical Office under Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation).

2. SWEDEN TO HOST WORLD LEADERS CONFERENCE TO COMBAT ANTI-SEMITISM IN OCTOBER 2020
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven announced that Sweden will host an International Conference against Anti-Semitism in memory of the Holocaust in October 2020. It will held in Malmo, Southern Sweden.

3. SEBI CONSTITUTED PANEL SUGGESTED SIGNIFICANT CHANGES TO FPI REGULATIONS
Securities and Exchange Board of India constituted panel suggested significant changes to Foreign Portfolio Investors Regulations including simplified registration requirements for certain categories and barring entities that fail to furnish beneficial ownership details.
The working group on SEBI (Foreign Portfolio Investors) Regulations, 2014 headed by former RBI deputy governor R Khan after consultations with various stakeholders had submitted the report.

4. RBI MODIFIED THE NORMS ON VRR INVESTMENT BY FPIS
Reserve Bank of India has modified the norms on Voluntary Retention Route investment by Foreign Portfolio Investors by fixing the investment limit at Rs. 54,606.55 crore.
Now FPIs can invest up to Rs 54,606.55 crore under the VRR, which allows to park funds in both government securities as well as corporate debt.

5. WIRECARD TEAMS UP WITH INDIA TO ISSUE PAN CARDS
Wirecard, a German Payments Company announced that it would work with India to simplify the process of issuing tax identity cards which required for opening bank accounts, transfer money and complete business transactions.

6. LIEUTENANT GENERAL SHAILESH TINAIKAR OF INDIA APPOINTED TO HEAD UN PEACEKEEPING OPERATION IN SOUTH SUDAN
The commandant of the Indian Army Infantry School, Lieutenant General Shailesh Tinaikar has been appointed as the new force commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan by the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

3. ISRO’S NEW COMMERCIAL ARM ‘NEWSPACE INDIA LIMITED INAUGURATED IN BENGALURU
Indian Space Research Organisation has inaugurated its new commercial arm ‘NewSpace India Limited’ in Bengaluru, Karnataka.
NSIL was inaugurated by Dr. K Kasturirangan, ISRO’s advisor, in the presence of ISRO’s chairman Dr. K Sivan.
On March 6, 2019 NSIL was incorporated for the purpose of utilising research and development activities carried out by ISRO in the area of space with an authorised share capital of Rs 100 crore and initial paid up capital of Rs 10 crore.

4. INDIA OPEN INTERNATIONAL BOXING TOURNAMENT 2019
India Open International Boxing Tournament 2019 was held in at Karmabir Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium in Guwahati, Assam
India won total 57 medals which includes 12 gold, 18 silver and 27 bronze medals.

5. INTERNATIONAL MISSING CHILDREN’S DAY 2019: MAY 25
The forget-me-not flower is the symbol of International Missing Children’s Day.

6. JUSTICE DN PATEL APPOINTED AS NEXT CHIEF JUSTICE OF DELHI HIGH COURT
The Collegium in its resolution of March 2019, recommended judge of Jharkhand High Court, DN Patel as chief justice of Delhi HC.

1. U20 MAYORS SUMMIT HELD IN TOKYO
The second Urban 20 (U20) Mayors summit was held in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan.
The themes of the summit were Climate Action, Circular Economy, Social Inclusion and Integration, Sustainable Economic Growth and Gender Equality.
The U20 Mayors summit takes place one month ahead of the G20 summit which is to be held in Osaka, Japan.

2. UN DAG HAMMARSKJOLD MEDAL TO JITENDER KUMAR
The UN (United Nations) Dag Hammarskjold Medal will be awarded posthumously to Indian Police Officer Jitender Kumar during the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers,
Late Jitender Kumar sacrificed his life while serving the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Chancy Chitete, a soldier from Mali will be honoured with the UN’s highest peacekeeping award.
India is the fourth largest contributor of uniformed personnel to the UN peacekeeping.

3. PAKISTAN MILITARY TEST-FIRED BALLISTIC MISSILE SHAHEEN-II
Pakistan military has test-fired its surface-to-surface ballistic missile Shaheen-II which is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear warheads. The range of the missile is up to 1500 km.

4. INTERNATIONAL COMMONWEALTH DAY: MAY 24
The theme for this year is ‘A Connected Commonwealth’.
Commonwealth Day was earlier known as the Empire Day.

1. FIRST PACIFIC VANGUARD NAVAL EXERCISE HELD NEAR GUAM
The four countries US, Japan, South Korea and Australia have kicked off first-of-its kind Pacific Vanguard Naval Exercise near Guam.

2. WHO HAS DECLARED ALGERIA AND ARGENTINA AS MALARIA-FREE COUNTRIES
World Health Organization has officially declared Algeria and Argentina as malaria-free countries after recording no new cases for more than three years. Now, the numbers of malaria free countries increased to 38 from 36.

3. ADB GRANTED $750 MN LOAN TO INDIA FOR RAILWAY TRACK ELECTRIFICATION PROJECT
Asian Development Bank has inked an agreement with Indian Railway Finance Corporation, an entity owned by Government of India to provide USD 750 million long-term financing for the Railways Track Electrification Project.

1. Mumbai tops the list of most vulnerable cities to cyberattacks in 2019
Quick Heal Security Labs in its report titled “The Annual Threat Report 2019” has disclosed that Mumbai topped the list of 15-city which are more vulnerable to cyberattcks in 2019. The other two cities which followed Mumbai are: Delhi and Bengaluru.
The report has also revealed that Maharashtra, Delhi and West Bengal are the top three states which are prone to cyberattacks.

2. India ranked 117th in Kids Right Index
Kids Right Index has ranked countries on the basis of how much they adhere to and are equipped to improve child rights. India ranked 117th out of 181 countries and Iceland topped the ranking followed by Portugal.

3. UAE launched ‘golden card’ permanent residency scheme
The United Arab Emirates has launched ‘golden card’ permanent residency scheme to woo wealthy investors and exceptional talents such as doctors, engineers, scientists, students and artist. This move can attract Indian professionals and businessmen to UAE and total 6,800 people will get benefit of the scheme under the first round of applications. The program was launched by UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum

1. WORLD BANK AND CBA JOINED HANDS FOR WORLD’S FIRST BLOCKCHAIN BOND TRANSACTION
International Bank for Reconstruction and Development in partnership with Commonwealth Bank of Australia enabled recording of secondary market bond trading using blockchain technology.  With this, Bond-i become the first bond whose issuance and trading is recorded on a blockchain platform.

2. RBI DIRECTED BIGGER NBFCS TO APPOINT CHIEF RISK OFFICER
The Reserve Bank of India has directed Non-Banking Finance Companies which have assets over Rs 5000 crore to appoint a chief risk officer. The rationale behind this direction is to improve standards of risk management practices of NBFCs.

3. UNESCO INCORPORATED INDIAN PART OF KAILASH MANSAROVAR IN TENTATIVE LIST OF WORLD HERITAGE SITES
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization incorporated Indian part of Kailash Mansarovar popularly known as Mount Kailash in the tentative list of World Heritage Sites.
