1. UNEMPLOYMENT RATE IN INDIA AT 6.1% IN 2017-18
According to a survey conducted by NSSO, the unemployment rate was about 6.1% in 2017-18, highest in 45 year since 1972-73.
Unemployment was higher in urban areas as compared to rural. The unemployment rate in rural areas was about 5.3% while in urban areas it was about 7.8%.
6.2% males and 5.7% females are jobless in India. The unemployment rate is highest amount urban females at 10.8% followed by urban males at 7.1 % rural males at 5.8% and rural females at 3.8 %.

2. INFANT MORTALITY RATE IN INDIA FALLS BUT THE PACE OF CHANGE SLOWS
India’s infant mortality rate declined by 9 positions from 42 in 2012 to 33 in 2017.
Madhya Pradesh and Assam had the worst IMR of 47 and 44 respectively while Kerala and Tamil Nadu recorded the lowest IMR of 10 and 16 respectively.
This is a cause of worry for India that India’s IMR is even today worse than those of South Asian neighbours, Srilanka, Bangladesh, Nepal.
Among the states Odisha and Uttarpradesh showed the biggest improvement between 2012 and 2017.


3. INDIAN ECONOMY LOST ITS SPOT AS WORLD’S FASTEST GROWING ECONOMY TO CHINA
Indian economy lost its spot as the world’s fastest-growing economy to China. It registered 6.3% annual growth in the January-March quarter, its slowest pace in six quarters.
As per economists, the prolonged phase of slower growth was due to stagnant rural wages, rising real interest costs for manufacturers and reluctance to lend among banks and non-bank finance firms due to high defaults.
Retail inflation for the past 6 months was below 3%.

4. RAJASTHAN HEALTH DEPARTMENT CONFERRED WITH WHO’S AWARD FOR TOBACCO CONTROL
The Medical and Health Department of Rajasthan was conferred with the World Health Organization’s Tobacco Control Award for 2019 in recognition of its achievements in the field of tobacco control. It was presented on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day celebrated on May 31.
It was the only government body in country to receive the award for its tobacco-free initiatives.

5. WORLD MILK DAY: JUNE 1
The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations selected June 1st as World Milk Day, which celebrates the important contributions of the dairy sector to sustainability, economic development, livelihoods, and nutrition.
The theme for World Milk Day 2019 is “Drink Milk: Today & Everyday”.
The aim is to educate people about the importance of milk in our life and society. Milk is one of the global foods, which is celebrated as a superfood all around the globe, figuratively and literally.
