1. INDIA RANKS 19TH OUT OF 28 COUNTRIES IN INDEX OF CANCER PREPAREDNESS

✔The Economist Intelligence Unit has released the 2019 Index of Cancer Preparedness in which out of 28 countries India is in 19th position from the top. Cancer in 2018 caused 9.6 million deaths worldwide making it the 2nd biggest killer.

✔Top 3 nations in the index are: Australia followed by the Netherlands and Germany.

✔Bottom 3 nations are: Saudi Arabia, Romania and Egypt.

2. ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE DRILL CONDUCTED BY INDIAN, US NAVIES IN INDIAN OCEAN

✔Indian and the US navies conducted joint submarine hunting exercise near Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean.

✔The objective of this exercise is to lay the groundwork for coordinating maritime patrol and reconnaissance anti-submarine training, information sharing and coordination between maritime patrol aircraft and surface combatants.

3. AMARTYA SEN CHAIRS AT THE LONDON SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND POLITICAL SCIENCE FOR RESEARCH ON INEQUALITY

✔To honor the Indian Nobel laureate Amartya Sen, the London School of Economics and Political Science has created the Amartya Sen Chair in Inequality Studies.

✔He will also serve as the director of the LSE International Inequalities Institute, focused on studying and challenging some of the most pressing issues.

4. POLITICAL NEOPHYTE AND COMEDIAN VOLODYMYR ZELENSKY WINS UKRAINIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION 2019

✔In Ukrainian presidential election 2019, Comedian Volodymyr Oleksandrovych Zelensky defeated incumbent Petro Poroshenko.

✔He becomes the sixth president of Ukraine.

✔Manish Maheshwari has been appointed as Managing Director of Twitter India succeeding Balaji Krish.

6. SERVICES BAGS THE 6TH SANTOSH TROPHY FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT TITLE AGAINST PUNJAB AT GURU NANAK STADIUM

✔Services won their 6th Santosh Trophy Football Tournament title with a 1-0 victory over Punjab.

✔The Services football team represents the Indian defence services in the Santosh Trophy.

7. FABIO FOGNINI MAKES HISTORY, BECAME THE FIRST ITALIAN TO WIN AN ATP MASTERS 1000 TITLE

✔Fabio Fognini clinched Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters after defeating Dusan Lajovic of Serbia the first Italian to triumph in more than 15 years.

✔Last time an Italian player Nicola Pietrangeli won the trophy in 1968.

8. APRIL 22 OBSERVED AS AN EARTH DAY 2019

✔Earth day is observed annually to support environmental protection on April 22.

✔The theme for 2019 was “Protecting Our Species, which are on the verge of extinction”.

✔The objective of Earth Day is to share responsibilities among people of this world and set agenda for peaceful coexistence with nature.
