1.PM NARENDRA MODI INAUGURATED KUSHINAGAR INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

      The Ministry of Tourism organized a two days conference titled ‘Tourism in Buddhist Circuit- A way forward’ at Kushinagar for the inauguration of Kushinagar International Airport by PM Narendra Modi.

      Built at an estimated cost of Rs. 260 crore, Kushinagar international airport  will connect the eastern UP with important centres on the Buddhist circuit in India .

 

2.UNEP PRODUCTION GAP REPORT 2021

      United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) has released the Production Gap Report, 2021, the report analyses the ‘production gap’ i.e. the difference between governments’ plan for fossil fuel production and the globally agreed climate limits (including the Paris climate agreement).

      As per the report, the world’s government plans to produce more than twice (around 110 percent) the amount of fossil fuels in 2030, that would be consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C.

      India plans to expand coal production by nearly 60 percent i.e. from 730 million tonnes in 2019 to 1,149 million tonnes in 2024.

      About Paris Agreement : To tackle climate change and its negative impacts, world leaders at the UN Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris made the Paris Agreement to reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2°C while pursuing efforts to limit the increase even further to 1.5°C.

      The Agreement is a legally binding international treaty.

      It entered into force on 4 November 2016. Around 192 Parties (191 countries plus the European Union) have joined the Paris Agreement.

 

3.SAKHAROV PRIZE 2021

      Russian Opposition leader (Party-Russia of the Future), lawyer and anti-corruption activist, Alexei Navalny was awarded the ‘Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought’ (Sakharov Prize), the European Union’s (EU) top human rights prize for human rights defenders.

      The Sakharov Prize recognises the individuals, groups, and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution towards protecting freedom of thought.

      The prize was awarded for the 1st time in 1988 to Nelson Mandela and Anatoli Marchenko.

 

4.UN INVESTMENT PROMOTION AWARDS FOR PROMOTING HEALTHCARE

      The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) has awarded the ‘United Nations Investment Promotion Awards’ to investment promotion agencies (IPAs) from Costa Rica, the Netherlands, and the Republic of Korea for excellence in promoting investment in health sectors.

      The award was announced at UNCTAD’s 7th World Investment Forum (WIF) through video conferencing.

5.INTERNATIONAL CHEFS DAY 2021 – OCTOBER 20

      International Chefs Day is annually celebrated by the World Association of Chefs Societies(Worldchefs) on 20th October to celebrate the profession of culinary arts and to create awareness about the importance of healthy food.

      The theme of International Chefs Day 2021 is “Healthy Food for the Future”.

 

6.GLOBAL IODINE DEFICIENCY DISORDERS PREVENTION DAY 2021 – OCTOBER 21

      Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDDs) Prevention Day which is also known as World Iodine Deficiency Day is annually observed on October 21st to create awareness about the importance of iodine for normal thyroid functions, growth and development.

      Iodine is one of the essential micronutrients that is needed for the production of Thyroid hormone.
