INDIA PRESS FREEDOM REPORT 2021

As per India Press Freedom Report 2021 released by Rights and Risks
Analysis Group (RRAG), Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) topped the list of States
and Union Territories where journalists and media houses were targeted the most
in 2021.
·
It was followed by Uttar Pradesh(UP), Madhya Pradesh (MP) and Tripura.
·
The highest number of journalists or media organisations targeted was in
J&K (25), followed by UP (23), MP (16),
·
The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media
Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, is an affirmation of the government’s intent to crack
down on media freedom.

PM MODI UNVEILS “STATUE OF EQUALITY”
·
Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi unveiled the “Statue of Equality”,
216-foot tall statue of Ramanujacharya, an 11th-century Bhakti Saint, at Jeeyar
Integrated Vedic Academy (JIVA), in Muchintal, Hyderabad, Telangana.
·
This is the world’s 2nd tallest statue in a sitting posture, after the
Great Buddha of Thailand statue (302 feet) in Ang Thong, Thailand.
·
The inauguration of the Statue of Equality, is a part of the 12-day
Ramanuja Sahasrabdi Samaroham, the ongoing 1000th birth anniversary
celebrations of Ramanujacharya.
·
The statue was built by Aerosun Corporation, China at a cost of Rs 135
crore and shipped to India in 1600 pieces and installed in 2017-2018.
·
The “statue of equality” is made up of Panchaloha, a combination of 5
metals: gold, silver, copper, brass and zinc
·
Ramanujacharya, a Vedic philosopher and social reformer, was born in
1017 in Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu.

INDIA WINS ICC U19 CWC 2022 TITLE
·
Indian Under-19 (U19) cricket team lifted a record-extending fifth
International Cricket Council (ICC) U19 Cricket World Cup (CWC) title after
defeating England in the final that was held at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium
in North Sound, Antigua and Barbuda (West
Indies)
·
Indian U19 team under the captaincy of Yash Dull lifted the
Under-19 Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2022 without losing a single match in the
entire tournament.
·
The match winning team is coached by former Indian Cricketer VVS Laxman
·
India’s U19 Captain Yash Dhull was named as the Captain of ICC’s ‘Most
Valuable Team’ of the U-19 World Cup.

LEGENDARY SINGER, BHARAT RATNA AWARDEE LATA
MANGESHKAR PASSED AWAY
·
Legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92 in
Mumbai, Maharashtra after suffering from multi-organ failure due to COVID-19.
·
She is also famous as the ‘Nightingale of India’.
·
Lata Mangeshkar was born on September 28, 1929, in Indore, Madhya
Pradesh (MP). She started her musical journey at age 13 in the 1942 Marathi
film Kiti Hasaal.
·
She belonged to a family of musicians, her father Pandit Deenanath
Mangeshkar and mother Shevanti Mangeshkar, was Marathi musician and theatre
artist.
·
Bharat Ratna- in 2001, for the contribution to the
arts. She became 2nd vocalist to receive this honour apart from late Carnatic
singer M S Subbulakshmi.
·
Other Major awards- ‘Officier de la Legion d’Honneur’-
France’s highest civilian award (Officer of the Legion of Honour) in 2009,
Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1989 etc.

MOEFCC DECLARES ARAVALLI BIODIVERSITY PARK IN
GURUGRAM AS INDIA’S 1ST OECM SITE

The Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEFCC)
declared the Aravalli Biodiversity Park in Gurugram, Haryana as India’s 1st ‘other
effective area-based conservation measures’ (OECM) site on the occasion of
World Wetlands Day (2nd February, 2022).
·
The OECM tag is given by the International Union for Conservation of
Nature (IUCN) to areas that are not protected but support rich biodiversity.
·
Under OECM tag, there are no legal, financial or management
implications, but it designates the area as a biodiversity hotspot on the international
map.

LIC 3RD STRONGEST & 10TH MOST VALUABLE
GLOBALLY - CRISIL REPORT
·
In accordance with the report by Crisil, LIC (Life Insurance Corporation
of India), India’s largest IPO (Initial Public offering)-bound national insurer
and 3rd strongest insurance brand globally, LIC (Life Insurance Corporation of
India), offers the highest Return on Equity (RoE) at 82% amongst all its global
peers.

It also becomes the third-strongest insurance brand globally after Poste
Italiane of Italy, and Mapfre of Spain at 1st and 2nd rank respectively.
·
It is also the world’s 10th most valuable insurance brand.

OVERTAKES MUKESH AMBANI AS ASIA’S RICHEST PERSON

In accordance with the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Gautam Adani (59)
net worth reached $88.5 billion overtaking Mukesh Ambani’s $87.9 billion
becoming Asia’s richest person as on 8th February, 2022.
·
With a nearly $12 billion jump in his personal wealth, he has become the
10th richest person in the world.
·
Globally the Elon Musk was named as the world’s richest person with
total net worth of $235 Billion.
·
He was followed by Jeff Bezos with total net worth of $183 Billion &
Bernard Arnault with total net worth of $168 Billion.
·
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index is a daily ranking of the world’s
richest people.

FOOTBALL -AFC WOMEN’S ASIAN CUP INDIA 2022
·
China PR (People’s Republic) won the Asian Football Confederation (AFC)
Women’s Asian Cup India 2022 defeating South Korea in the finals held at the
D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.
·
The 2022 championship marks China’s 9th title.
·
AFC Women’s Asian Cup is a quadrennial tournament, held every 4 years,
to crown the best women’s football team in Asia.

A biography of Tokyo Olympics Gold medalist, Neeraj Chopra titled
‘Golden Boy Neeraj Chopra’ authored by Navdeep Singh Gill released at Punjabi
Bhawan in Ludhiana, Punjab.

Neeraj Chopra won a Gold medal in the Javelin Throw event at 2020 Tokyo
Olympics, in Japan.

Neeraj Chopra is India’s first

10.
WEST BENGAL STARTS OPEN-AIR CLASSROOM ‘PARAY
SHIKSHALAYA’ DUE TO COVID-19
·
The West Bengal government launched ‘Paray Shikshalaya’ (Neighbourhood
Schools) , an open-air classroom programme for students from classes 1 to 7.
·
Initially, the initiative was meant for primary school students (classes
1 to 5)
·
Students are being called in batches and mid-day meals have also been
arranged for the students who are taking neighbourhood classes.
·
Under the project, the state government has decided to hold classes in
open ground.
·
The para teachers and primary school teachers would be part of the
project to provide elementary education to Class 1-5.
