1.       CAMPAIGN ‘MERI LIFE, MERA SWACHH SHEHAR’ TO PROMOTE RRR

·         The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) launched its massive campaign programme “Meri LiFE, Mera Swachh Shehar” to promote the RRRs (3Rs) of waste management: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

·         Citizens of urban India are actively refurbishing used objects for reuse, embracing the principles of creating “wealth” from waste. This is boosting the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0’s (SBM-U) total zero-waste ecosystem.

·         The 3R’s form the backbone of ‘Waste to Wealth’ and has empowered many entrepreneurs, startups, self-help groups (SHGs), craftspeople, and recyclers to recycle waste into a variety of products.

·         The Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) initiative, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi aims to protect and preserve the environment and bring about a pro-planet behavioural change that can be instilled through individual action in day-to-day life.

 

2.       BCG LIST OF TOP 50 MOST INNOVATIVE FIRMS 2023Boston

·         Consulting Group (BCG) has released a report namely ‘Most Innovative Companies 2023: Reaching New Heights in Uncertain Times’ showcasing top 50 companies in 2023 that are most innovative in their operations.

·          In this, Tata Group is the only Indian company to feature in this list at 20th position.

·         The list has been topped by Apple Inc., and followed by Tesla Inc., and Amazon.com, Inc. at 2nd and 3rd rank.

3.       WORLD BANK REPORT ON REVENUES COLLECTED GLOBALLY

·         According to the World Bank’s (WB) annual report ‘State and Trends of Carbon Pricing 2023’  revenues collected from carbon taxes and Emissions Trading Systems (ETS) globally have reached a record high, about US$95 billion in 2022 despite the challenging context for governments facing high inflation, fiscal pressures, and energy crises.

·         As per the report, there are currently 73 global carbon pricing instruments are in operation, compared with 68 in May 2022 when the World Bank issued its 2022 report.

·         The 73 Carbon Pricing initiatives covered 11.66 GtCO2e (gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent), representing 23% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions

·         Only 7% of global GHG emissions were covered by either a carbon tax or an ETS, when the report was published for first time i.e. 10 years ago.

 

4.       INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE 2023

·         Bulgarian Writer Georgi Gospodinov and translator Angela Rodel won the International Booker Prize 2023 for the dark comic novel titled “Time Shelter”.

·         This becomes the first book originally written in Bulgarian (and translated into English) to win the International Booker Prize.

·         The International Booker Prize is awarded annually for a single book, translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland.

 

5.       FORBES 30 UNDER 30 ASIA CLASS OF 2023

·         76 entries from India are featured among the Forbes 30 Under 30 Asia Class of 2023.

·         The Indian winners includes Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra(25), Co-founders of Genrobotic Innovations(Kerala) Arun George(29); Vimal Govind MK(28); Rashid Karimbanakkal(28); Nikhil NP(29), and Elwinder Singh(29), cofounder of Connect and Heal.

·         India ranked first with 76 entries, followed by China (34), Japan (33), Singapore (30) and South Korea (28).

 

6.       MOCA LAUNCHES UDAN 5.1 DESIGNED FOR HELICOPTER ROUTES

·         The Ministry of Civil Aviation(MoCA) launched the Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) –UdeDesh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) 5.1 to enhance connectivity to remote areas of the country and achieve last-mile connectivity through helicopters.

·         For the 1st time, the RCS-UDAN scheme is designed specifically for helicopter routes.

·         UDAN 5.1 focuses on 2 emerging phenomena in Indian civil aviation,

·         Democratization of air travel with a focus on last-mile connectivity.

 

7.       PM NARENDRA MODI’S VISIT TO JAPAN, PAPUA NEW GUINEA AND AUSTRALIA

·         Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Japan, Papua New Guinea and Australiain May to attend multilateral summits, including the Group of Seven (G7).

·         India has been invited as a guest country for the G7 summit, PM Narendra Modi participated in the annual summit of the G7 advanced economies in Hiroshima under the Japanese Presidency on May 20 2023.

·         PM Modi unveiled a 42-inch tall bronze bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Hiroshima, Japan on 20 May 2023.

·         PM Narendra Modi along with PM of Papua New Guinea James Marape released a translation of the Tamil classic ‘Thirukkural’ in the Tok Pisin language to bring the Indian thought and culture closer to the people of this southwestern Pacific nation.

·         Special ceremony at the Government House, Sir Bob Dadae, Governor-General of Papua New Guinea, conferred Prime Minister Modi with the “Grand Companion of the Order of Logohu (GCL)“, the highest civilian award in Fiji, in recognition of his global leadership.

·         PM Modi jointly hosted the 3rd Summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC III Summit) with PM of Papua New Guinea James Marape on May 22, 2023. FIPIC had been launched during PM Modi’s visit to Fiji in 2014.

 

8.       TOP 500 GLOBAL SUPERCOMPUTING LIST

·         India’s AI (Artificial Intelligence) Supercomputer ‘AIRAWAT’, has been ranked 75th globally in the 61st edition of Top 500 Global Supercomputing List which was released at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC 2023) in Germany.

·         The list has been topped by the United States (US) Frontier.

·         This HPE Cray EX system is the first US system with a performance exceeding one Exaflop/s (EXA Floating Point Operations per Second).

 

9.       WMO APPROVED A GLOBAL TRACKER FOR GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS

·         The World Meteorological Congress, the supreme body of World Meteorological Organization (WMO) approved a new Green House Gas (GHG) watch, a global GHG monitoring initiative to support urgent action to reduce heat-trapping gases which are fuelling temperature increase.

·         New Global Greenhouse Gas Watch approved by WMO will support mitigation action taken by the Parties to theUnited Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.

·         193 countries of WMO have unanimously approved the creation of a new GHG  monitoring mechanism to have a stained, internationally coordinated GHG monitoring.

·         4 Components of GHG:A comprehensive, sustained, global set of surface-based and satellite-based observations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) concentrations, total column amounts, partial column amounts, vertical profiles and fluxes and supporting meteorological, oceanic, and terrestrial variables, internationally exchanged as rapidly as possible, pending capabilities and agreements with the system operators;

·      World Meteorological Organization (WMO):Headquarters– Geneva, Switzerland.

 

10.    SENIOR JUDGE IOANNIS SARMAS APPOINTED AS CARETAKER PM OF GREECE

·         Katerina Sakellaropoulou, President of Greece, has appointed Senior Judge IoannisSarmas(66 years old) as the caretaker Prime Minister(PM) of Greece to lead the caretaker government until the repeat election on 25th June 2023.

·         He was sworn in as the PM to replace outgoing PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis after the inconclusive ballot.

11.    IRAN TEST‘KHEIBAR’ NEW GENERATION BALLISTIC MISSILE  

·         Iran successfully test-launched a new surface-to-surface 4th generation of Khorramshahr ballistic missile, a medium-range precision-guided projectile named Kheibar.  It was developed by the Aerospace Industries Organization (AIO) under Iran’s Ministry of Defense.

·         The missile was unveiled alongside a replica of the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City, Israel.

·         Kheibar is, a liquid fuel missile with a potential 2,000 kilometres (1,243 miles) range and can carry a 1,500 kilogram (3,300-pound) warhead.
