1. IMD TO SET UP WEATHER STATIONS IN 660 DISTRICTS BY 2019
i. The India Meteorological Department has decided to
set up weather stations in 660 districts of the country for better and prompt
weather forecasting with major focus on non-rain-fed and rain-fed areas to give
crop specific advisories.
ii. Initially, IMD has planned to set up the system in
130 districts and gradually increase it to 660 by 2019. After successful
functioning at district level the plan will be taken at block level.
iii. The India Meteorological Department has also tied
up with the Ministry of Agriculture to use the Krishi Vigyan Kendras, under the
Indian Council of Agricultural Research in the districts, as weather
forecasting observatories.
iv. The India Meteorological Department is an agency
of the Ministry of Earth Sciencesof the Government of India responsible for
meteorologicalobservations, weather forecasting and seismology.
2. INHERITANCE COURT FOR NON-MUSLIMS TO BE SET UP IN ABU DHABI
i. The Deputy PM and Minister of Presidential Affairs
and Chairman of Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al
Nahyan, has issued a resolution to set up a Personal Status and Inheritance
Court for non Muslims in Abu Dhabi.
ii. The objective of setting up the Court is to ensure
access to services for all segment of the society and promote the culture of
tolerance and acceptance of other communities values at the judiciary level.
iii. The aim of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department is
to enhance the sustainability and effectiveness of the judicial procedures in
harmony with the prevailing norms in the community

RBI GIVES FINAL LICENSE TO INDIA POST TO START PAYMENT BANK OPERATIONS
i. India Post has become the 3rd entity to receive a final
license last week from the Reserve bank of India to start its payment bank
operations.
ii. Earlier, digital payments firm Paytm and Bharti Airtel
got the approval from RBI to start operations.
iii. The government has appointed AP Singh has interim MD
and CEO of the India Post Payment Bank.
iv. The department of Post has planned to open 650 new
branches for the payment banks in the postal district headquarters and all the
branches under it would provide the payment services.
v. IPPB has been integrated as a Public Sector Bank under
the Department of Posts with 100% GOI equity.

NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION DAY: 29TH JANUARY 2017
i. 29th January 2017 is observed as the National
Immunization Day. President Pranab Mukherjee has launched the countrywide
programme for 2017 by administering polio drops to children aged below five
years at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The programme will cover around 17
crore children aged under five years in an effort to maintain the country's
polio-free status.

DENMARK TO APPOINT WORLD’S FIRST ‘DIGITAL AMBASSADOR’
i. Denmark has announced a 'digital ambassador' to manage
its relationship with technology giants like Apple and Google, becoming the
first country to do so. Denmark's Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen stated that
“Such companies have become a type of new nations and we need to confront
that”. He also said that “The companies' market values are large enough to
enter G20”.

the 68th Republic Day Parade in New Delhi. Havaldar Hangpan Dada of Assam
Regiment killed 4 intruding terrorists at the height of 13,000 feet in the
harsh and icy Himalayan range of North Kashmir.

INDIA RANKS 6TH ON EIGHT GREAT POWERS IN 2017: AMERICAN FOREIGN POLICY MAGAZINE
i.
India is ranked at the 6th spot behind China and Japan in a list of 8 great
powers for the year 2017 by a leading American foreign policy magazine.
ii. The list is topped by the US, whereas
China and Japan are at tie for being on the second spot. Russia and Germany are the other 2 countries ahead
of India. Iran is ranked 7th and Israel is on the 8th spot.

JEEVAN RAKSHA PADAK AWARDS 2016 ANNOUNCED

Indian President has approved the conferment of Jeevan Raksha Padak Series of
Awards 2016 on 36 persons including Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 5 persons,
Uttam Jeevan Raksha Padak to 8 persons and Jeevan Raksha Padak to 23 persons, 7
awards are posthumous.
ii.
Jeevan Raksha Padak series of awards are given to a person for meritorious act
of human nature in saving the life of a person.
iii.
The award is given in 3 categories namely, Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak,
Jeevan Raksha Padak and Uttam Jeevan
Raksha Padak. The award can also be conferred posthumously.

US EMMY AWARD-WINNING ACTRESS MARY TYLER MOORE HAS PASSED AWAY

Emmy award-winning US actress Mary Tyler Moore has passed away. She was best
known for her television roles in the 1960s sitcom The Dick Van Dyke Show and
the eponymous The Mary Tyler Moore Show in the 1970s.

NATION CELEBRATES ITS 68TH REPUBLIC DAY
i. India celebrates its
68th Republic Day on 26th January 2017. On January 26, 1950, the Constitution
of India came into force. President Pranab Mukherjee has started the ceremony
by hoisting the Indian flag, following which the Republic Day Parade from Rajpath.
ii. The Theme of 2017
Republic Day is: Skill India and Beti Bachao Beti Padhao.
iii. The Crown Prince of
Abu Dhabi and the Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of United Arab
Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was the Chief Guest at the
ceremony.
iv. PM Narendra Modi, who
personally received the Prince at the airport, stated that United Arab
Emirates is India's valued partner and
close ties between the two countries are important for the entire region.
v. President Pranab
Mukherjee conferred 3 Gallantry awards on the Indian Navy, also approved 398
Gallantry awards and other Defence decorations to Armed Forces personnel and
others.

Superintendents of Police, District Collectors and other functionaries involved
in election management.

The Day is also utilized to spread awareness among voters regarding effective
participation in the electoral process.

RUBBER SOIL INFORMATION SYSTEM LAUNCHED BY THE MINISTRY OF COMMERCE &
INDUSTRY FOR RUBBER GROWERS

The Minister of Commerce & Industry, Smt Nirmala Sitharaman launched Rubber
Soil Information System in New Delhi to provide the detail about the soil
quality to the rubber growers to enhance productivity besides reducing the cost
of production.
ii.
RubSIS is an online platform developed to recommend application of appropriate
mix of fertilizers to the specific plantations of rubber growers depending upon
their soil nature.
