1. RBI GIVES FINAL LICENSE TO INDIA POST TO START PAYMENT BANK OPERATIONS
i. India Post has become the 3rd entity to receive a final license last week from the Reserve bank of India to start its payment bank operations.
ii. Earlier, digital payments firm Paytm and Bharti Airtel got the approval from RBI to start operations.
iii. The government has appointed AP Singh has interim MD and CEO of the India Post Payment Bank.
iv. The department of Post has planned to open 650 new branches for the payment banks in the postal district headquarters and all the branches under it would provide the payment services.
v. IPPB has been integrated as a Public Sector Bank under the Department of Posts with 100% GOI equity.

2. NATIONAL IMMUNIZATION DAY: 29TH JANUARY 2017
i. 29th January 2017 is observed as the National Immunization Day. President Pranab Mukherjee has launched the countrywide programme for 2017 by administering polio drops to children aged below five years at a function in Rashtrapati Bhavan. The programme will cover around 17 crore children aged under five years in an effort to maintain the country's polio-free status.

3. DENMARK TO APPOINT WORLD’S FIRST ‘DIGITAL AMBASSADOR’
i. Denmark has announced a 'digital ambassador' to manage its relationship with technology giants like Apple and Google, becoming the first country to do so. Denmark's Foreign Minister Anders Samuelsen stated that “Such companies have become a type of new nations and we need to confront that”. He also said that “The companies' market values are large enough to enter G20”.

4. ALIBABA’S FINANCIAL ARM ACQUIRES MONEY GRAM
i. E-commerce giant Alibaba’s financial arm, Ant Financial, has reached an agreement to acquire American money-transfer major MoneyGram for $880 million that will expand the firm’s business in the US after India and Thailand.
ii. The transaction will connect MoneyGram’s money transfer network of 2.4 billion bank and 350,000 physical locations and mobile accounts with Ant Financial’s users.

5. 2017 AUSTRALIAN OPEN: ROGER FEDERER WINS MEN'S TITLE
i. Roger Federer has won the Australian Open, beating long-time rival Rafael Nadal in the finals in Melbourne, Australia.
ii. It’s Federer’s 5th Australian Open title and 18th Grand Slam singles title in total.

6. AUSTRALIAN OPEN: SERENA BEATS SISTER VENUS FOR RECORD 23RD SLAM TITLE
i. Serena Williams beat her sister Venus Williams in Australian Open tennis final  to win her 23rd Grand Slam singles title.
ii. This is her 7th Australian Open win and her 23rd Grand Slam victory since the game turned professional in 1968.

7. NITIN GADKARI ANNOUNCES TO DEVELOP 1,253 KM ROAD IN ASSAM AS NATIONAL HIGHWAYS
i. The Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways and Shipping, Nitin Jairam Gadkari,inaugurated a 3-lane Brahmaputra Bridge at Saraighat in Guwahati.
ii. The Minister announced that the government would spend Rs 15,000 cr to develop 1,253 kms of roads in Assam into National Highways over the next few years.
iii. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd will spend Rs 8,000 cr over the next two years for developing 143 kms of road, including a few bridges over Brahmaputra.
iv. The 3-lane Bridge has been developed at a cost of Rs. 475 cr and aims to solve the problem of traffic congestion at Amingaon and  Jalukbari points.
v. The Centre has also increased the roads funds from Rs. 450 cr to Rs. 800 cr.
