1. BAJRANG PUNIA BECAME FIRST INDIAN WRESTLER TO FIGHT AT NEW YORK’S ICONIC MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

✔25 year old Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia became the first Indian wrestler to fight at New York’s iconic Madison Square Garden. He won the gold medal at the 65kg men’s freestyle wrestling at the recent Asian Championships.

✔He is the first Indian wrestler to be invited by the American governing body and will take part in the “Grapple at the Garden — Beat the Streets” fight night, which will be held on 6th May 2019.

✔He also won eight gold medals from his previous nine international tournaments including last year’s Commonwealth and Asian Games and presently holds World No.1 title in the 65-kg weight category.

2. GIA CONFERS GAGANJEET BHULLAR FOR ‘OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AS A PLAYER 2019’

✔Indian Professional Golfer, Gaganjeet Bhullar has been awarded outstanding achievement as a player award at the 4th Edition of the annual India Golf Industry Association award for the year 2019.

1. CHINA HOSTED 2ND BELT AND ROAD FORUM IN BEIJING

The second edition of Belt and Road Forum (BRF) was held in Beijing, China from April 25th to April 27th, 2019 in which 37 heads-of-state had participated along with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and International Monetary Chief (IMF) Christine Lagarde. The theme of this event was “Belt and Road Cooperation: Shaping a Brighter Shared Future”.

2nd Belt and Road Forumi.The Belt and Road Forum is a part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The idea of BRI was first proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013.

2. SC GAVE ULTIMATUM TO RBI TO DISCLOSE INFORMATION UNDER RTI ACT

Recently, Supreme Court bench headed by Justice L Nageswara Rao has directed the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to disclose information related to its annual inspection report of banks under the Right to Information (RTI) Act until and unless they are exempted under law. The bench has also directed the RBI to review its policy to disclose information relating to banks under RTI.

i. The bench was hearing a contempt petition filed by RTI activists Subhash Chandra Agarwal and Girish Mittal against the Reserve Bank of India.

ii. According to the petitioners, they had asked copies of RBI’s inspection reports of ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank, and SBI between April 2011 and December 2015 but the central bank rejected to provide this information by stating that it is exempted under section 8(1)(e) of the RTI Act and section 45NB of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

1. NITI AAYOG, UNICEF SIGNED A LOI FOR CHILDREN EMPOWERMENT

✔United Nations Children Fund India and NITI Aayog’s Atal Innovation Mission has signed a Letter of Intent to provide an open platform to promote participation, skill and empowerment among young children across different communities.

✔The plan will be implemented through Atal Tinkering Lab which established under Atal Innovation Mission.

2. QATAR’S TO ABOLISH EXIT VISA SYSTEM BY 2019: UN

✔UN’s International Labour Organization announced that Qatar is set to abolish its exit visa system for all foreign workers by the end of 2019.

✔The country was committed to labour reform following an Amnesty international report that the 2022 World Cup host was failing to stop widespread labour abuse.

✔Qatar has launched labour reforms since its selection as the 2022 World Cup host, with the event set in motion a huge construction plan employing foreign workers.

✔In 2018, Qatar approved legislation to dismiss the sponsorship system or “kafala”, which claimed that foreign workers obtain permission from their employers to leave the country.

1. UNION MINISTRY OF HOME AFFAIRS DISTRIBUTED SPECIAL KITS ‘SAECKS ‘TO STATES AND UNION TERRITORIES TO COLLECT EVIDENCE ON SEXUAL ASSAULT CASES

✔The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has distributed around 3,120 special kits among states and union territories.

✔The kits are termed ‘SAECKs‘ (The Sexual Assault Evidence Collection Kits) and are also called ‘rape investigation kits’ that help to collect blood and semen samples for carrying out immediate effective medico-legal investigations on sexual assault cases.

2. INDIAN ARMY INKS MOU WITH NHPC TO BUILD TUNNELS ON CHINA, PAKISTAN BORDERS

✔Indian Army signed a Memorandum of Understanding with National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited, to build four underground tunnels along China and Pakistan borders for storage of ammunition and other war-related equipment.

1. STATE BANK OF INDIA LAUNCHED INDIA’S FIRST ‘GREEN CAR LOAN’

✔State Bank of India has launched India’s first ‘Green Car Loan’ to encourage customers to buy electric vehicles. The new scheme ‘Green Car Loan’ will offer the loan at 20 basis points lower than the interest rate on the existing car loan schemes.

✔SBI has already notified 100% migration to Electric Vehicles by 2030 in order to decrease carbon footprints, thus being in line with the government’s pledge of ensuring 30% EVs on road by 2030.

2. UAE BASED ETIHAD AIRWAYS BECOMES FIRST MAJOR AIRLINE TO OPERATE PLASTIC-FREE FLIGHT

✔Etihad Airways, UAE based flag carrier, has become the first major airline in the Gulf region to operate a flight without any single-use plastics on board. The objective is to raise awareness about pollution. Etihad Airways has pledged to reduce single-use plastic usage by 80% across the entire organization by the end of 2022.

3. RBI SELLS ENTIRE STAKE IN NHB, NABARD TO GOVERNMENT FOR INR 1,470 CRORE

✔The Reserve Bank of India has divested its entire stake held in National Housing Bank, and National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development to the government, which now holds 100% in these entities.

✔The transactions were completed in February and March. RBI had 100% shareholding in NHB, which was divested for INR 1,450 crore. RBI had 72.5% stake in Nabard, out of which 71.5%, worth INR 1,430 crore was divested in October 2010 and the residual shareholding was divested in February 2019 for INR 20 crore.
