1.      ISRO UNVEILS INDIA’S FIRST VIRTUAL SPACE MUSEUM ‘SPARK

·           S. Somanath, Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), unveiled the ‘SPARK’: The Space Tech Park, India’s first virtual space technology museum, as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit  Mahotsav celebrations commemorating India’s 75th anniversary of independence.

·           SPARK is the first 3D (three-dimension) virtual space tech park ever created by ISRO.

·           The platform’s beta version offers a virtual tour of SPARK and visitors can virtually board the Space on Wheels bus to take the tour.

 

2.      7.3% OF INDIANS OWNED DIGITAL CURRENCY IN 2021-UNCTAD

·           The United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) estimated that 7.3% of the Indian population possessed digital currency in 2021, placing India 7th out of the top 20 global economies for digital currency ownership as a share of population.

·           It has issued three policy briefs in this regard.

·           Policy Brief No. 100 – “All that glitters is not gold: The high cost of leaving cryptocurrencies unregulated”

·           Policy Brief No. 101 – “Public payment systems in the digital era: Responding to the financial stability and security-related risks of cryptocurrencies”

·           Policy Brief No. 102 – “The cost of doing too little too late: How cryptocurrencies can undermine domestic resource mobilization in developing countries”

 

3.      JUSTICE UDAY UMESH LALIT APPOINTED 49TH CJI

·           Justice Uday Umesh Lalit (UU Lalit), judge of the Supreme Court was appointed as the 49th Chief Justice of India (CJI) by the warrant signed by President Droupadi Murmu.

·           In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President has appointed Justice U U Lalit as CJI

·           He will have a brief tenure as the head of India’s judiciary and would demit office on 8th November 2022 after holding the charge as the CJI for 3 months.

·           Supreme Court judges retire on attaining the age of 65 years and judges of the 25 high courts retire at 62.

·           The ‘Memorandum of Procedure of Appointment of Supreme Court Judges’ says “appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the senior most Judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office”.

·           His landmark cases are Triple Talaq, divorce-related case of Muslim community which was marked as void, illegal and unconstitutional and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) case which ruled that touching sexual parts of a child’s body or any act involving physical contact with sexual intent amounts to ‘sexual assault’ under section 7 of the POCSO Act.

 

4.      NITISH KUMAR TAKES OATH AS BIHAR CM FOR 8TH TIME

·           Janata Dal (United) leader Nitish Kumar took oath as the Chief Minister (CM) of Bihar for the 8th consecutive time.

·           He was joined by Rashtriya Janata Dal’s (RJD) Tejashwi Yadav who swore in as his Deputy CM.

·           They were administered the oath of office and secrecy by Governor Phagu Chauhan.

 

5.      1ST EVER ‘MADE IN INDIA’ SURGICAL ROBOTIC SYSTEM’ – SSI- MANTRA

·           Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute and Research Centre (RGCIRC) in New Delhi, Delhi have installed the first-ever “Made in India” Surgical Robotic System, SSI-MANTRA, which was invented by the new-age Indian Med-Tech start-up SS innovation Private Limited- World renowned medical and engineering leadership team.

·           SSI-MANTRA is an acronym for Multi Arm Novel Tele Robotic Assistance and the company making it is, SS Innovations.

·           ‘SS’ is Dr Sudhir Srivastava, India-born cardiac surgeon.

 

6.      44TH CHESS OLYMPIAD 2022

·           44th FIDE Chess Olympiad 2022 was held at Chennai, Tamil Nadu(TN), India

·           This is the first time the Chess Olympiad is being hosted in India and the first in Asia after 30 years.

·           It was organized by the TN State Government, All India Chess Federation (AICF), and International Chess Federation (FIDE).

·           Uzbekistan defeated Netherlands and secured the gold medal in Open Section.

·           It was their first overall medal in the Chess Olympiads.

·           India clinched two bronze medals with 18 match points.

7.      2022 NATURE INDEX UNIVERSITIES RANKINGS 

·           The University of Hyderabad (UoH) in Telangana, an Institution of Eminence (IoE), was placed first among Indian universities and 16th among all institutions in India in the Academic sector in the Nature Index 2022 ranking.

·           The Nature Index is an indicator of high quality research in natural and physical sciences (including chemistry, life sciences, earth & environmental sciences, and physical sciences).

·           Rank 23rd– Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad.

·           Rank 26th– Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Tirupati.

 

8.      RBI DISALLOWS USE OF LETTERS OF COMFORT

·           The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has prohibited the usage of Letters of Comfort (LoC), a document that gives a guarantee of support to the borrower without any promise to make good any defaults.

·           This move will downgrade the credit ratings of roughly 100 firms, equal to Rs. 35,000 crore of debt.

·           A Letter of Comfort (LoC) is a document issued by a parent company telling a bank that one of its subsidiaries has acquired a loan. According to it, the parent company “supports” the subsidiary during the process and will offer assistance as needed.

·           Generally, it is granted by foreign companies with subsidiaries and branches in India.

 

9.      SHASHI THAROOR TO RECEIVE HIGHEST CIVILIAN AWARD OF FRANCE

·           Congress Member of Parliament (MP) and wordsmith Shashi Tharoor received the Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur (the Legion of Honour), for his writings and speeches.

·           The National Order of the Legion of Honour, formerly the Royal Order of the Legion of Honour, is the highest French order of merit.

·           Shashi Tharoor  is serving as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, since 2009.

·           He served 29 years at the United Nations(UN), rising to the position of Under-Secretary-General for Communications And Public Information in 2002

·           Prominent books of ShashiTharoor are An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India ,Why I Am A Hindu,The Paradoxical Prime Minister

 

10.    GUILLERMO PABLO RÍOS APPOINTED UNMOGIP HEAD OF MISSION

·           United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed a veteran Argentine naval officer Rear Admiral Guillermo Pablo Ríos as Head of Mission and Chief Military Observer for the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP)

·           UNMOGIP was established in January 1949 in India and Pakistan at Islamabad and Srinagar to oversee the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. 

 

11.    WORLD ELEPHANT DAY 2022- AUGUST 12 

·           World Elephant Day is annually celebrated on 12 August to create awareness on elephant conservation

·           The year 2022 marks the 11th anniversary of World Elephant Day.

 

12.    INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2022  – AUGUST 12

·           United Nations (UN’s) International Youth Day is annually celebrated on 12 August to raise awareness regarding issues that are faced by the world’s youth.

·           The theme for 2022’s edition of International Youth Day-“Intergenerational solidarity: creating a world for all ages.”
