1.       NATIONAL MANUFACTURING INNOVATION SURVEY 2021-22

·         The 2nd edition of ‘National Manufacturing Innovation Survey (NMIS) 2021-22: Summary for Policymakers‘, a joint study by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), to evaluate the innovation performance of manufacturing firms in the India was released .

·         Karnataka, overall, is the most innovative State with index score of 33.41, followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu (DNH&DD) (32.88), Telangana (32.86), and Tamil Nadu-TN (32.54).

 

2.       INDIA SETS FOODGRAIN PRODUCTION TARGET OF 332 MT FOR 2023-24 CROP YEAR

·         The Union Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare(MoA&FW), Government of India, has set a target of 332 million (3320 lakh) tonnes of production of foodgrains for the 2023-2024 crop year (July 2023-June 2024).

·         MoA&FW’s target includes the production of 29.25 MT of pulses, 44 MT of oilseed, and 17 MT of millets.

·         Total production of sugarcane during 2022-23 is estimated at a record 4688 lakh tonnes.

·         As per the 3rd Advance Estimates of Horticulture, a record 3423.3 lakh tonnes of horticultural production are estimated in 2021-22 which is 77.30 lakh tonnes higher than production of 2020-21.

 

3.       INDIAN ARMY CONDUCTED BULAND BHARAT TRAINING EXERCISE

·         Indian Armed Forces conducted ‘Buland Bharat’, an integrated surveillance and firepower training Exercise, at the newly operationalised High Altitude Artillery Ranges of Eastern Theatre located in the West Kameng and Tawang districts of Arunachal Pradesh.

·         The training exercise involved the synergised application of surveillance and firepower capabilities of the Artillery and the Infantry in close coordination with Special Forces, Aviation and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF).

·         The exercise was conducted to test simulated war conditions in high altitude area.

 

4.       RBI’S REPORT ON CURRENCY AND FINANCE 2022-23

·         The report released by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Report On Currency And Finance 2022-23 on May 03, 2023, recommends India to introduce a broad-based carbon pricing system in line with emerging global best practices to meet the country’s climate goals.

·         The theme of the report is –  ‘Towards a Greener Cleaner India’,

·         The carbon tax was suggested to be accompanied by complementary redistributive policies due to its regressive nature, in view of the inability of the weaker sections of the society to move to eco-friendly modes of production and patterns of consumption.

 

5.       14TH WORLD BANK PRESIDENT

·         Ajay Banga (63) appointed as the 14th President of the World Bank (WB) by the 25-member Executive Directors of the WB for a five-year term beginning June 2, 2023.

·         He will succeed David Malpass, becoming the first Indian-born nominee to hold this position and the first-ever Indian-American to lead WB.

·         He is also the first-ever Indian-American and Sikh-American to head either of the two top international financial institutions: the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the WB.

 

6.       CJ OF THE CALCUTTA HIGH COURT

·         The Government has notified the appointment of Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, the seniormost judge of the Calcutta High Court, as the Chief Justice (CJ) of the Calcutta High Court.

·         The Supreme Court Collegium (SCC) suggested Justice T.S. Sivagnanam for the position of CJ of the Calcutta High Court.

 

7.       UNESCO WORLD PRESS FREEDOM PRIZE

·         The United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced three imprisoned Iranian women journalistsNiloofarHamedi, ElahehMohammadi, and NargesMohammadi as the laureates of the 2023 UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize, an award that celebrates press freedom.

·         The annual UNESCO/Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize was created in 1997 to honours a person, organization or institution which has made an outstanding contribution to the defence and/or promotion of press freedom anywhere in the world, especially when this has been achieved in the face of danger.

 

8.       PRESIDENT OF PARAGUAY

·         Former International Monetary Fund (IMF) economist, Santiago Pena, candidate of the ruling conservative Colorado Party won the Paraguay presidential election 2023.

·         He took nearly 43% of the votes in the election and defeated centre-left candidate Efraín Alegre, who secured nearly 28% votes.

9.       WORLD PRESS FREEDOM INDEX

·         India’s ranking in the 2023 World Press Freedom Index has slipped to 161 out of 180 countries, according to the latest report released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

·         This ranking reflects a significant decline in press freedom in the country.

·         The report shows that India’s ranking has fallen 11 places since last year when it was ranked 150th in the World Press Freedom Index.

·         Pakistan has done better than India in terms of media freedom, with a rank of 150 which is an improvement from its 157th position last year

 

10.    OPERATION KAVERI

·         The Indian government has launched a rescue operation in Sudan to evacuate its stranded citizens. The operation, named Operation Kaveri, is currently underway.

·         As per official data, around 4,000 Indians are stuck in Sudan. The Indian government has deployed two C-130s aircraft and the navy ship INS Sumedha on standby to evacuate Indians from the violence-hit African nation.

·         The Sudanese army and a paramilitary group have been engaged in an armed conflict for the last 10 days. The conflict has claimed over 427 lives, including at least 273 civilians, and more than 3,700 people have been wounded.

·         This is not the first time the Indian government has launched a rescue operation and named it after a river. The Indian government had evacuated Indians from war-torn Ukraine more than a year ago, and this rescue operation was dubbed Operation Ganga
