SHAKTI 23: 4TH INDIA-INDONESIA BILATERAL NAVAL EXERCISE AT BATAM, INDONESIA

Samudra Shakti-23, the
4th edition of India-Indonesia Bilateral Naval Exercise between the Indian Navy
(IN) and Indonesian Navy (IDN) is being held at Batam, Indonesia from May
14-19, 2023.
·
To enhance
interoperability, jointness and mutual cooperation between both the navies.
·
The exercise consists of Harbour phase and sea phase.
·
Samudra Shakti was
commenced in 2018 between IN and IDN.

WHO
LAUNCHES FRAMEWORK TO HELP REDUCE ANAEMIA IN WOMEN OF REPRODUCTIVE AGE
·
The World Health
Organisation launches its first-ever comprehensive framework on reducing
anaemia, Acceleratinganaemia reduction: a comprehensive framework for action,
calling on countries to accelerate action to reduce the prevalence of anaemia
in women of reproductive age by 2025.
·
The United Nations Health
Agency launched a comprehensive framework on reducing anaemia during the
International Maternal Newborn Health Conference (IMNHC) 2023 held from May
8-11 2023, in Cape Town, South Africa.
·
Reduction of anaemia is
one of the World Health Assembly’s (the decision-making body of WHO) Global
Nutrition Targets for 2025, which is accorded as a 50% reduction of anaemia in women of reproductive age.

ASKS BANKS TO ENSURE COMPLETE TRANSITION AWAY FROM LIBOR FROM JULY 1, 2023

The Reserve Bank of India
(RBI) issued an advisory to banks and other RBI-regulated entities to ensure a
complete transition from the international benchmark reference rate US$ London Interbank Offered Rate (LIBOR)
or the Mumbai Interbank Forward Outright Rate (MIFOR) from July 1, 2023.
·
After June 30, 2023,
Financial Benchmarks India Pvt. Ltd. (FBIL) will cease to publish Mumbai Interbank Forward Outright Rate (MIFOR).
·
LIBOR has been a globally
accepted key benchmark interest rate that indicates borrowing costs between
banks.
·
The Reserve Bank of India
was established on April 1, 1935, in accordance with the provisions of the
Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.

FORMS 5-MEMBER COMMITTEE TO ADVICE ON MENTAL HEALTH COVER

The Insurance Regulatory
and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) constituted a 5-member expert
committee comprising medical experts and insurers under the chairmanship of Pratima Murthy,
Director of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences
(NIMHANS), to provide advice and inputs to IRDAI on matters related to mental
health and insurance.

Work of committee is to
make a complete examination of the various aspects such as types of conditions,
and types of treatments from an insurance perspective to deal with products
designed to cover mental illnesses and other related aspects.

SQUARE PRIZE FOR TRANSLATION

Pakistani-Canadian
author, translator, and storyteller, Musharraf
Ali Farooqi, who translated SiddiqueAlam’s short story collection “The Kettledrum and Other Stories” from
Urdu to English, won the inaugural edition of the Armory Square Prize for South
Asian Literature in Translation.
·
The Prize is given to
address the stark disparities in literary translation worldwide and support
compelling storytellers from the Indian Subcontinent by raising their
visibility in the United States of America (USA).

The book “The Kettledrum” tells the story of an
Adivasi matriarch living with the ghost of her deceased husband, weaving in
legends that animate tribal communities and their rapidly receding
traditions.

NAVY SUCCESSFULLY TEST-FIRED BRAHMOS MISSILE FROM INS MORMUGAO
·
BrahMos supersonic cruise
missile was successfully test-fired from the Indian Navy’s frontline guided
missile destroyer INS (Indian Naval Ship) Mormugao.
·
The indigenous ship (INS
Mormugao) and weapon (BrahMos supersonic cruise missile), mark the symbol of ‘AatmaNirbharta’ and the Indian Navy’s
firepower at sea.
·
This marks INS Mormugao’s
first BrahMos Supersonic cruise missile firing.

PRRANEETH BECOMES INDIA’S 82ND GRANDMASTER

16-year-old
VuppalaPrraneeth from Telangana, has become India’s 82nd Grand Master (GM) by defeating GM Hans Niemann from United
States of America (USA) in the penultimate round of the Baku Open 2023,
which took place in Baku Crystal Hall, Baku, Azerbaijan.
·
With this win Vuppala Prraneeth
crossed the required 2500 FIDE’s
(International Chess Federation or World Chess Federation) Elo live ratings, to
achieve the GM title.

BOND AUTHORED A NEW BOOK TITLED “THE GOLDEN YEARS”
·
Ruskin Bond, an Indian
author, authored a new book titled “The
Golden Years: The Many Joys of Living a Good Long Life”, published by
HarperCollins India, which is scheduled to be released on 19th May 2023 (on the
occasion of his 89th Birthday). The book is about the last 20 to 30 years of
his life (60s, 70s and 80s).

He wrote his 1st book “The Room on the Roof” at the age of 17.
It was a semi-autobiographical story with Rusty being the protagonist.
·
Ruskin Bond was awarded
the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1992 for
“Our Trees Still Grow in Dehra”.
·
He was also awarded the
Padma Shri in 1999 and Padma Bhushan in 2014 for Literature and Education.

KERALA
BECOMES 1ST INDIAN STATE TO LAUNCH WELFARE FUND FOR WORKERS UNDER MGNREGS
·
The initiative was
launched by the Chief Minister (CM) of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan at Kotta
Maidanam, Palakkad, as part of the 100-day action plan in connection with the
state government’s second anniversary.
·
Under this, the workers
who have completed the age of 60 will be entitled to a pension which will also
provide financial assistance for medical treatment, education, and marriage,
among other benefits.
·
Under this, the workers
need to pay a nominal monthly amount of Rs 50 as a contribution to the fund and
the government will also contribute an equal amount.
·
Those who have paid the
contributions for ten or more years, and their families will get the benefits
in case of the beneficiary’s death.
·
Eligibility for
membership includes being between 18 to 55 years of age and having engaged in
unskilled work for at least 20 days in the year of application or any year in
the two years immediately preceding it.

PREPARES “MODEL PRISONS ACT 2023”
·
The Ministry of Home
Affairs (MHA) has prepared the “Model Prisons Act 2023” which will replace “The Prisons Act, of 1894”, a 130-year-old
British-era law, to overhaul the prison administration that will focus on the
reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
·
“Model Prisons Act, 2023” allows security
assessment and segregation of prisons, separate wards for women and
transgenders and punishment for conniving jail staff among other provisions

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the
appointment of Ravneet Kaur, a 1988
Punjab cadre IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer, as the Chairperson of Competition Commission of
India (CCI).
·
She has been appointed
for a period of 5 years with effect from the date of assuming the charge or
till the date of attaining the age of 65 or until further order.
·
Ravneet
Kaur becomes the first woman and non-secretary
bureaucrat to be appointed as a CCI
Chairperson.
·
She will replace CCI
Member Sangeeta Verma who has been serving as the interim (acting) chairperson
of CCI since October 2022 after Ashok Kumar Gupta demitted office.
·
CCI has to have a
chairperson, not less than two and not more than six other members, as per the
Competition Act.
·
The Competition
Commission of India (CCI) is a statutory
body (within the Ministry of Corporate Affairs) of the Government of India
under the Competition Act, 2002 for the administration, implementation, and
enforcement of the Act.

Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), chaired
by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the appointment of Anil Kumar Jain, as the new
Chairman of the Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).
·
He has been appointed for
a period of 5 years from the date of assumption of charge of the post or till
attaining the age of 65 years, or until further orders.
·
The PNGRB was constituted
under The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board Act, 2006 (NO.19 of 2006)
notified on 31st March 2006.
·
PNGRB is the 1st regulatory body set up by the
Government of India (GoI).

Amy
E. Pope (49 years old) of the United States of America (USA)
was elected as the 1st woman Director General (DG) of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations(UN) Migration Agency.

She defeated the
incumbent DG of IOM Antonio Vitorino of Portugal, the European Union(EU)
candidate, who has been serving as the DG of IOM since 2018.
