1. ENVIRONMENT PERFORMANCE INDEX 2024
·
According
to the 2024 Environment Performance
Index (EPI), India is
ranked 176th out of 180
countries with an EPI score of 27.6, surpassing
only Pakistan, Viet Nam, Laos, and Myanmar.
·
Estonia tops the 2024 EPI with an EPI score of
75.3 followed by Luxembourg and Germany
at 2nd and 3rd spot.
·
EPI
is a biennial index released by the Yale
Center for Environmental Law & Policy and the Center for International Earth Science
Information Network Earth Institute, Columbia University
2. THE UNIVERSITY IMPACT RANKINGS 2024
·
India has become the most represented
nation in the Times Higher Education (THE)
University Impact Rankings 2024 with 96 entries.
·
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu(TN),
ranked 81st, tops among the Indian
Universities featured on the list.A
·
India
is followed by Turkiye with
91 universities and Pakistan with
89 universities respectively.
·
The
2024 ranking is topped by
the Western Sydney University in
Australia, followed by The University of Manchester, the United Kingdom(UK) and
the University of Tasmania, Australia at 2nd place.
3. UNHCR REPORT ON FORCED DISPLACEMENT
·
The
report titled “Global Trends
Forced Displacement in 2023” published by the United Nations
High Commissioner for Refugees(UNHCR),
states that the forced displacement
has increased to 120 million by the end of April 2024.
·
An
estimated 117.3 million people remained
forcibly displaced at the end of 2023.
·
The
report discovered that the number of
refugees who crossed international borders in 2023 has increased by 7% to 43.4 million.
·
Iran (3.8 million) hosts the largest refugee population followed by Turkiye (3.3
million), Colombia (2.9 million), Germany (2.6 million) and Pakistan (2
million).
·
UNHCR
was established in 1950 by
the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the aftermath of the Second World
War.

4. PRESIDENT OF SOUTH AFRICA
·
The
South African Parliament re-elected Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa
as the President of the Republic of South Africa for 2nd term.
·
Matamela
Cyril Ramaphosa, the President of African
National Congress (ANC) party, secured 283
votes in the 400 member house against Julius Malema, of Economic Freedom
Fighters (EFF), who received just 44 votes.

5. FIDE WORLD JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2024
·
The
International Chess Federation (FIDE)
World Junior Chess Championships 2024 (for Open & Girls Under-20)
was held at the GIFT City, Gandhinagar,
Gujarat
·
International
Master (IM) Divya Deshmukh(18
years old) from India won the 2024 FIDE
World Junior Chess Championships (Girls)
title by defeating Bulgaria’s Beloslava Krasteva in the final round.
·
IM Kazybek Nogerbek (20 years) from Kazakhstan won the 2024 FIDE World
Junior Chess Championships (Open)
title by defeating Mamikon Gharibyan of Armenia in the final round
·
This
marks India’s first World Junior title after a gap of 15 years.
·
Kazybek Nogerbek and Emin Ohanyan (Armenia ) topped (1-2) the final
standing of the Open category with a score of 8.5.
·
Divya topped the final standing of the
Girls category with a score of 10.
6. IEP’ GLOBAL PEACE INDEX 2024
·
According
to the 18th edition of
the Global Peace Index (GPI) 2024 released
by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), India is
ranked 116th out of 163 countries, climbing 10 positions
from 2023.
·
The
list is topped by Iceland since 2008 followed by Ireland(2nd), Austria(3rd), New
Zealand(4th), and Singapore(5th).
·
Europe has been the most peaceful
region in the world
and is home to eight of the ten most peaceful countries since the start of the
GPI.
·
The Middle East and North Africa (MENA)
region remained the world’s least peaceful region with major crises in Yemen and Sudan becoming the reasons of its
poor rating.
·

7. RBI IMPOSES RS 1.45 CR PENALTY ON CENTRAL BANK OF INDIA
·
Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) has imposed
a monetary penalty of Rs 1,45,50,000 on the Central Bank of India (CBI) for
non-compliance with specific directives issued by RBI on ‘Loans and Advances – Statutory and Other Restrictions’ and ‘Customer
Protection – Limiting Liability of Customers in Unauthorised Electronic
Banking Transactions’.
·
CBI
sanctioned a working capital demand loan to a Corporation against amounts
receivable from Government by way of subsidies.
8. YUVA PURASKAR & BAL SAHITYA PURASKAR
·
Executive
Board of the Sahitya Akademi, India’s
National Academy of Letters, an autonomous body under the Ministry of Culture
chaired by Madhav Kaushik, President, Sahitya Akademi declared a list of 24 recipients of its Bal Sahitya Puraskar and 23 winners of its Yuva Puraskar for the year 2024.
·
The
award is given in 24 Indian languages (of which 22 languages
are recognized as official languages in Schedule 8 of the Indian Constitution and English and Rajasthan).
·
The
winners of Sahitya Akademi’s Bal Sahitya Puraskar and Yuva Puraskar 2024 will
receive the award in the form of a casket containing an engraved copper plaque and a cheque
of Rs 50,000 each at a
ceremony to be held later.
·
It
is the 2nd highest literary award given by Government of India (GoI) annually, following
the Jnanpith Award.
·
It
was established by GoI in 1954 and
1st Sahitya Akademi awards were given in 1955.
·
The
Head office of the Sahitya Akademi is in New Delhi, Delhi.
9. V. SHANTARAM LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
·
Subbiah Nallamuthu, a renowned wildlife filmmaker from
Chennai (Tamil Nadu) was honoured with the Dr V Shantaram Lifetime Achievement Award during the
inauguration of the 18th Mumbai
International Film Festival (MIFF 2024).
·
The
award carries a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh, a trophy, and a citation.
·
SubbiahNallamuthu gained prominence for his his work
on “Living on the Edge”, India’s
longest-running environment series.
10. ALIA BHATT BOOK “ED FINDS A HOME”
·
Alia Bhatt, Bollywood actress, has
launched her debut children’s picture
book series titled ‘Adventures of Ed-a-Mamma: Ed Finds a
Home’, sharing her passion for storytelling.
·

book features illustrations by Tanvi
Bhat.
