1.       RBI RELEASES ANNUAL REPORT OF OMBUDSMAN SCHEMES, 2020-21

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the Annual Report of the Ombudsman Schemes for 2020-21,  which has been prepared for the 9-month period, i.e., July 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, in alignment with the change in the Financial Year of RBI from ‘July – June’ to ‘April – March’ with effect from July 1, 2020.

·         The Annual Report covers the activities under the Banking Ombudsman Scheme, 2006 (BOS), the Ombudsman Scheme for Non-Banking Financial Companies, 2018 (OSNBFC) and the Ombudsman Scheme for Digital Transactions, 2019 (OSDT)

·         The volume of complaints received under all the 3 Ombudsman Schemes increased by 22.27 percent on an annualized basis and stood at 3,03,107.

·         BOS: The complaints received at BOS from July 1, 2020, to March 31, 2021, stood at 2,73,204 as compared to 3,08,630 complaints from July 2019 to June 2020.

·         Issues related to ATM (Automated Teller Machine)/ debit cards, mobile/ electronic banking, credit cards, failure to meet commitments, and non-observance of fair practices code were the top-five grounds of complaints received at the Office of Banking Ombudsman (OBO) during July 2020-March 2021.

·         RB-IOS: In November 2021 Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched Reserve Bank – Integrated Ombudsman Scheme (RB-IOS) to integrate and replace the current 3 ombudsman schemes (BOS, OS-NBFC, and OSDT).

1.       INDIAN RAILWAYS RENAMES ‘KEVADIYA STATION’ AS ‘EKTA NAGAR RAILWAY STATION’

·         The Ministry of Railways approved the renaming of the Kevadiya railway station under the Vadodara division of Narmada district (Gujarat) as the Ekta Nagar railway station.

·         The new station code of Ekta Nagar railway station will use the station code EKNR and the numerical code of the station will be 08224620.

·         The railway station is the key to reach the World’s tallest ‘Statue of Unity’ (height 182 m) that  is located in Kevadiya, Gujarat.

1.       KOCHI BECOMES INDIA’S FIRST CITY WITH WATER METRO PROJECT

·         Kochi (Kerala) has become India’s first city to have a Water Metro Project after the launch of its first boat in December 2021, namely ‘Muziris,’ among the 23 battery-powered electric boats being manufactured by Cochin Shipyard Limited.

·         This launch is a part of Rs 747-crore project which is operated by Kochi Water Metro Ltd (KWML). The boats will be called Water Metros.

1.       GURUGRAM TO GET INDIA’S 1ST HELI-HUB WITH MANY AVIATION FACILITIES

·         The government of Haryana in collaboration with the Ministry of Civil Aviation is set to establish India’s first-ever Heli Hub in Gurugram. The first of its kind heli-hub in Gurugram is designed to all the facilities in one place for Helicopters.

·         The hub will have several aviation facilities like Heliport, Hangars, repairs and other related services.

·         This is one of the 10 helicopter hubs and corridors proposed under the new Helicopter Policy of the Civil Aviation Ministry.

1.       ANTIGUA & BARBUDA BECOMES 102ND MEMBER OF INTERNATIONAL SOLAR ALLIANCE

·         The Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda joined the International Solar Alliance (ISA) as the 102nd member by signing the International Solar Alliance Framework Agreement, the India-led global green energy initiative.

·         ISA was jointly launched by India and France in 2015 during the 21st session of the United Nations Climate Change COP-21 in Paris, France to promote solar energy.

·         The ISA is an action-oriented, member-driven, collaborative platform for solar resource-rich countries to address special energy needs and to provide a platform for collaboration.

 

2.       RBI GRANTED SCHEDULED PAYMENT BANK STATUS TO AIRTEL PAYMENTS BANK

·         the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) granted a Scheduled Payment Bank status to Airtel Payments Bank by including it into the Second Schedule to the RBI Act, 1934.

·         With this inclusion, it becomes the 4th payment bank to get this status.

·         Apart from Airtel Payments Bank, other payment banks that are in the List of Second Schedule of the RBI Act are Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL), India Post Payments Bank Limited (IPPBL), and Fino Payments Bank Limited (FPBL).

·         The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Damodardas Modi laid the foundation stone of  Rs 700 Crore Major Dhyan Chand Sports University in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh (UP).

 

2.       100-DAY READING CAMPAIGN ‘PADHE BHARAT’ LAUNCHED

·         Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education, launched a 100-day reading campaign “Padhe Bharat” to encourage the reading habit among students and to improve the learning levels of the students with a focus on children studying in Balvatika to Grade 8.

·         The campaign is in line with the National Education Policy(NEP) 2020 which promotes joyful reading culture among students.

·         It is also aligned with the vision and goals of the Foundational Literacy and Numeracy mission.

·         International Mother Tongue Day which will be celebrated on 21st February 2022 has also been integrated into the campaign and the day will be celebrated with the activity of “Kahani Padho Apni Bhasa Main” (Reading story in own language) across India.

1.       DOT SETS UP SIX TASK FORCES TO EXPLORE 6G DEVELOPMENT

·         The  Department of Telecommunications (DoT) of the Ministry of Communication formed a task force  under the Technology Innovation Group (TIG) on 6G (6th  Generation) technology to explore technological innovations and various commercial uses.

·         Under the 6G TIG, the Six task forces will be set up to provide research and development support in the form of inputs.

SIX Task Forces are:

  • ·         Task force on Multi-Platform for Next Generation Networks
  • ·         Task force on Spectrum Policy
  • ·         Task force on Multi-Disciplinary Innovative Solutions and Devices
  • ·         Task force on Devices
  • ·         Task Force Group for Financing Research And Development
  • ·         Task force on international standards.

 

2.       INDIA SEMICONDUCTOR MISSION LAUNCHED

·         Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw launched the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) to attract large investments for setting up semiconductor wafer fabrication facilities in India.

·         ISM is a specialised and independent business division within the Digital India Corporation.

·         The fiscal support of up to 50 percent of the project cost (ceiling of Rs 12,000 crore per fab) will be provided for the scheme for setting up display fabs.

·         Fiscal support will be provided on ‘pari-passu’ basis for a period of six years from the date of approval both for semiconductor fabs and display fabs.

1.       GOVT APPROVED 19TH TRANCHE OF ELECTORAL BONDS

·         Ahead of assembly elections in five states such as Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Goa, the government has approved the issuance of the 19th tranche of electoral bonds, which will be open for sale from January 1 to 10, 2022.

·         In the 19th tranche of sale, the State Bank of India (SBI), has been authorised to issue and encash electoral bonds through its 29 specialised branches.

·         Electoral Bonds are the alternative financial instrument that could be used for making donations to political parties, it was formed as part of efforts to bring transparency in political funding.

·         Electoral Bonds can be purchased by a person who is a citizen of India or entities incorporated or established in India.

·         Any party registered under section 29A of the Representation of the Peoples Act, 1951 and has secured at least 1 percent of the votes polled in recent General/Assembly elections (i.e. election of Lok Sabha or legislative assembly) are eligible to receive electoral bonds.

·         There is no limit on the number of bonds an individual or company can purchase.

·         An electoral bond will be valid for 15 days.

1.       INDIAN ARMY ESTABLISHED QUANTUM LAB AT MCTE, MHOW IN INDORE, MP

·         The Indian Army has established the Quantum Lab at the Military College of Telecommunication Engineering(MCTE), in Military Headquarters Of War(Mhow), Indore, Madhya Pradesh(MP).

·         The Quantum Lab was established with the support of the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS) to spearhead research and training in this key developing field.

·         Indian Army has also established an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Centre at the MCTE, Mhow with more than 140 deployments in forward areas and active support of industry and academia.

·        Quantum TechnologyThe researches undertaken by the Indian Army in the field of Quantum Technology will advance into next generation communication and transform the current system of cryptography in the Indian Armed Forces to Post Quantum Cryptography (PQC).

 

2.       RBI’S REPORT ON BANKING IN INDIA 2020-21

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the ‘Report on Trend and Progress of Banking in India 2020-21’, which presents the performance of the banking sector, including co-operative banks, and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) during FY21 and FY22 (till December 2021).

·         The gross non-performing assets (GNPA) ratio of SCBs (Scheduled Commercial Banks) declined from 8.2% at end of March 2020 to 6.9% at end-September 2021.

·         The share of RSA (Restructured Advances) has increased to 1.8 percent at end September 2021 (from 0.8 percent as at end-March 2021 due to the restructuring scheme 2.0 for retail loans and MSMEs which does not entail an asset classification downgrade.

·         The increased in deposit insurance from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 5 lakh augmented the share of co-operative depositors’ coverage from 42.7 percent (at end March 2019) to 69.4 percent (at end-March 2021).

1.       GGI 2020-21: GUJARAT TOPS THE INDEX

·         Union Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Cooperation, Amit Shah released the Good Governance Index 2020-21 (GGI 2021) which was a biannual exercise prepared by Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG).

·         Gujarat has topped the composite ranking in the GGI covering 10 sectors 58 indicator index followed by Maharashtra and Goa.

·         Among UT’ Delhi Top the Index

 

2.       DEFENCE MINISTER LAYS FOUNDATION STONE FOR DTTC & BRAHMOS MANUFACTURING CENTRE

·         The Union Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh laid the foundation stone for Defence Technology & Test Centre (DTTC) and BrahMos Manufacturing Centre. 

·         The 2 defence manufacturing houses will be established by DRDO in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh (UP).

·         The BrahMos Manufacturing Centre will be set up by BrahMos Aerospace in Lucknow & will produce the new BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) variant 

·         BrahMos is a joint venture between India’s DRDO and Russia’s NPOM.

·         Flight range of around 300 km.

1.       GOI DECLARES SOYA MEAL AS AN ESSENTIAL COMMODITY

·         The Central Government has notified the order under the Essential Commodities Act to declare ‘Soya Meal’ as an Essential Commodities up to 30th June 2022 by amending the Schedule of the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, to cool down the domestic prices of Soya Meal.

·         The decision would empower the Union Government and all States/Union Territories to regulate production, distribution etc. of Soya Meal and to smoothen the sale and availability of it in the market.

·         The Centre has also imposed stock holding limits on soya meal, which is used as a raw material in the poultry feed industry, till June 30, 2022, to curb hoarding and control price rise.

·         Soya meal processors, millers and plant owners could hold a maximum stock of 90 days of production and they are required to declare the storage location.

·         Government-registered trading companies, traders and private chaupals are allowed hold a maximum stock of 160 tonnes with a defined and declared storage location.

·         ‘Most Innovative Best Practice’ at the coveted Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Digital Transformation Award 2021 or CII DX Award 2021 is received by HDFC Bank.

·         HDFC’s is recognized for efforts in world class financial inclusion in Village Level Executive (VLE) centres along with Government of India’s Common Service Centres (CSC).
