1.         SURAT TO BECOME THE 1ST STATION TO BE READY FOR INDIA’S 1ST BULLET TRAIN

·               Surat (Gujarat) is set to become the first station to be ready between Mumbai – Ahmedabad Bullet Train route for India’s first futuristic High Speed Rail project, Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) Corridor. 

·               MAHSR corridor will cover 12 stations

·               The construction of the first Bullet train in India, which will connect Ahmedabad and Mumbai, has began in September 2017. 

·               The 508 Km long high speed rail corridor build with the support of Japan, is expected to be completed by 2022.

·               The train will operate at a speed of 320kmph and 350 km per hour is the Maximum Design Speed- of the train.

1.       KARNATAKA’S HOYSALA TEMPLES NOMINATED FOR UNESCO’S WORLD HERITAGE SITES LIST 2022-2023

·         The Hoysala temples of Belur, Halebid and Somnathapura, the ‘Sacred Ensembles of the Hoysala’,  in Karnataka have been finalised as India’s nomination for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation’s (UNESCOs) World Heritage List for the year 2022-2023.

·         These Hoysala Temples have been on UNESCO’s Tentative list since April 15, 2014, for its rich historical and cultural heritage of India.

2.       NORTH KOREA TEST FIRES INTERMEDIATE RANGE BALLISTIC MISSILE “HWASONG-12”

·         North Korea successfully test fired Intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), :Hwasong-12″ from North Korea’s Jagang Province toward the East Sea. 

·         The missile flew about 800 km (497 miles) with the maximum altitude reaching 2,000 km (1,243 miles).

·         At full power and at a standard trajectory, the missile can travel as far as 4,000km.

·         It is estimated that it has an operational range between 3,700 to 6,000 km.

1.       INDIA’S FIRST GEO PARK IN MADHYA PRADESH

·         The Geological Survey of India (GSI), Ministry of Mines, approved the setting up of India’s 1st geopark at Lamheta village, on the banks of the Narmada river in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh (MP).

·         A geopark is a unified area that protects the geological heritage and promotes sustainable, well-being of the people living in that area.

·         This geopark to be formed in MP is already in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) geo-heritage tentative list for the conservation of the natural heritage.

·         Several dinosaur fossils had been found in the Narmada valley, particularly in the Bhedaghat-Lameta Ghat area of Jabalpur, MP.

 

2.       CHENNAI SUPER KINGS BECOMES INDIA’S 1ST UNICORN SPORTS ENTERPRISE

·         Four-time Indian Premier League (IPL) winners Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has become the country’s 1st sports Unicorn with its market cap having touched a high of Rs 7,600 crores and its share in the grey market trading in the Rs 210-225 price band.

·         Currently, CSK has a market cap more than its parent entity, India Cements.

·         CVC Capital acquired the rights for the Ahmedabad franchise for Rs 5,625 crore and the Sanjiv Goenka-led RPSG (RP-Sanjiv Goenka) Group bought the Lucknow franchise (Lucknow Super Giants) for Rs 7,090 crore.

·         Unicorns are privately held start-up companies having a valuation of more than USD 1 billion.

·         Currently, India has the 3rd largest number of Unicorns in the world. As per the Global Unicorn Index 2021 report released by the Hurun Research Institute, India ranked at 3rd (by adding 33 ‘unicorns’ in 2020) by displacing the United Kingdom (UK) to the 4th spot.

1.       150 INDIAN VILLAGES TO CONVERT INTO ‘VILLAGES OF EXCELLENCE’

·         The Central Government will convert 150 villages around Centres of Excellence (CoEs) into ‘Villages of Excellence’ in 12 States with technical assistance from Israel government.

·         75  villages will be taken up in the first year to commemorate the 75th year of India’s independence.

·         India and Israel also completed its 30 years of diplomatic relation.

 

2.       SBI LISTS $300 MILLION VIA TAIWAN’S FORMOSA BONDS ON INDIA INX

·         The State Bank of India (SBI) listed its 1st USD 300 million Formosa bonds on India International Exchange IFSC (India INX).

·         SBI became the first Indian entity to raise money through Formosa Bond.

·         Through the issuance, India INX became the first Exchange in IFSC (International Financial Services Centre) to list Formosa Bonds issued by SBI.

·         SBI, acting through its London branch, raised USD 300 million of ‘Regulation S’ Formosa bonds at a coupon rate of 2.49 percent.

·         Formosa bond -It is a bond issued in Taiwan and listed on the Taipei Exchange.

·         The bond is dominated by currencies other than the New Taiwan dollar.

·         In order to qualify as Formosa bond issuers, borrowers need to have an investment grade or credit ratings of BBB or higher.

1.     INDIAN NAVY CONDUCTS JOINT MARITIME EXERCISE PASCHIM LEHAR 2022

·         The Indian Navy (IN) conducted a 20-day joint intra-theatre maritime exercise Paschim Lehar 2022 aka XPL-22 at the Arabian Sea under the aegis of FOC-in-C (Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief), Western Naval Command (WNC) Vice Admiral Ajendra Bahadur Singh.

·         It was held to validate operational plans of WNC and enhance inter-service synergy among the IN, Indian Air Force (IAF), Indian Army and Coast Guard.

 

2.     DECOMMISSIONED INS KHUKRI TO BE DEVELOPED AS MUSEUM

·         Indian Naval Ship (INS) Khukri, the lead ship of Khukri class corvettes and an indigenous surface-to-surface missile fitted vessel of the Indian Navy which has been decommissioned on 23rd December 2021, has been handed over to the Diu Administration on 26 January 2022, 73rd Republic Day in a ceremonial event held at the INS Khukri Memorial, Diu.

·         INS Khukri is set to be developed as a full-scale museum in memory of the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War Heroes.

1.     INDIA’S 1ST GRAPHENE INNOVATION CENTRE TO BE ESTABLISHED AT THRISSUR, KERALA

·         The Digital University Kerala (DUK) has announced partnership with the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (C-MET) in Thrissur, Kerala to establish India’s first Graphene Innovation Centre in Kerala.

·         The project will provide a wide range of commercial and industrial applications in biomedical, defense, electronics, energy, and sensors.

·         Graphene is an allotrope of carbon consisting of a single layer of atoms arranged in a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice nanostructure.

·         The graphene has the potential to replace indium and it will lower the cost of OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screens in smartphones.

·         Graphene is the thinnest and strongest material in the world. It also has good chemical stability, high electrical conductivity and a large surface area while being transparent and lightweight.

 

2.     TRANSPARENCY INTERNATIONAL’S CPI 2021 – INDIA RANKS 85TH

·         According to the 2021 edition of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Berlin-based non-profit organisation Transparency International, India has ranked 85th on the index (CPI score: 40) that ranks 180 countries and territories based on their perceived levels of public sector corruption on a scale of zero to 100 (where 0 implies highly corrupt and 100 implies very clean).

·         Denmark, Finland and New Zealand (Score: 88) have shared the 1st rank followed by Norway (Score: 85) in the 4th rank.

·         Union Minister Amit Shah, Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) virtually released the India’s First ‘District Good Governance Index (DGGI)’ in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) , prepared by Department of Administrative Reforms & Public Grievances (DARPG) in collaboration with Government of J&K.

·         It is prepared for the 20 Districts of UT of J&K.

·         With this, J&K became the first Indian UT with a Good Governance Index.

1.     NITI AAYOG RELEASE REPORT ‘BANKING ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN INDIA’

·         NITI (National Institution for Transforming India) Aayog in collaboration with Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), and RMI India released a report titled ‘Banking on Electric Vehicles in India- A Blueprint for Inclusion of EVs in Priority Sector Lending Guidelines’.

·         It has proposed the government to include Electric Vehicle (EVs) in the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) priority-sector lending (PSL) guidelines to boost retail lending for EVs and to support the decarbonization of road transport.

2.     MOU FOR CONSTRUCTION OF ADI BADRI DAM TO REVIVE SARASWATI RIVER

·         The governments of Himachal Pradesh (HP) and Haryana signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the construction of a Adi Badri dam on 77 acres in HP near the Adi Badri area of Yamunanagar, Haryana for the revival of the Saraswati river.

·         The area will also get developed as a pilgrimage site.

1.     INDONESIA REPLACES SINKING JAKARTA WITH NEW CAPITAL CITY NUSANTARA

·         The Indonesian Parliament has passed a law to relocate its capital from Jakarta to East Kalimantan, situated to the east of Borneo island. 

·         The new capital city of the country will be called Nusantara, which is a symbol of the identity of the nation, and also a new centre of economic gravity.

·         Cause for change in Capital:Jakarta is prone to flooding & climate change which also suffers from congestion and air pollution.

·         According to the World Economic Forum (WEF), Jakarta is one of the fastest-sinking cities on Earth which has been dropping into the Java Sea due to the over-extraction of groundwater.

·         The name of the new city Nusantara (also called IKN) has been chosen by President Joko Widodo, it is a Javanese term translated as ‘archipelago’ in the Indonesian language.

 

2.     UNCTAD’S INVESTMENT TRENDS MONITOR

·         As per the United Nation Conference on Trade and Development’s (UNCTAD) ‘Investment Trends Monitor’ published in January 19, 2022, the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows to India in 2021 had decreased by 26 percent mainly because large Mergers & Acquisition (M&A) offers recorded in 2020 were not repeated.

·         The world’s overseas direct funding flows have rebounded in 2021, which rose at 77 percent to an estimated USD 65 trillion, from USD 929 billion in 2020.

·         Greenfield investment project in India had contracted by 19 percent to USD 24 billion and the number of new projects in global value chains (GVCs) including industries, such as electronics were decreased.

1.     IEA REPORT ON  INDIA’S ANNUAL POWER CONSUMPTION

·         As per the January 2022 ‘Electricity Market Report’ of International Energy Agency (IEA), power demand in India is expected to grow at an annual rate of 6.5 percent between 2022 and 2024 backed by rising consumption from residential and industrial segments.

·         India clocked the highest 10 percent Y-o-Y growth in power demand during the 2021 calendar year (CY).

·         Global electricity demand grew by 6 percent in 2021. The majority of supply growth in 2021 to 2024 is expected in China, accounting for around half of the net total increase, followed by India (12%), Europe (7%) and the United States (4%).

·         Power consumption in India declined by more than 2 percent during 2020 due to COVID-19.

 

2.     SEBI  LAUNCHES ‘SAA THI’ MOBILE APP FOR INVESTOR EDUCATION & AWARENESS

·         The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) launched a mobile app “Saa thi” based on investor education in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

·         The Saathi app aims to create awareness and provide education to investors about the basic concepts of the securities market.

·         It will provide knowledge about KYC (Know Your Customer) process, trading and settlement, mutual funds (MF), market developments, investor grievances redressal mechanism, etc.

1.     INS KOCHI UNDERTAKES PASSEX WITH RUSSIA’S ADMIRAL TRIBUTS IN ARABIAN SEA

·         Indian Navy’s indigenously designed and built guided-missile destroyer, INS (Indian Navy Ship) Kochi, has undertaken the international PASSEX (Passage Exercise) with Russian Federation Navy’s destroyer Admiral Tributs at the port of Cochin in the Arabian Sea.

·         Generally, a PASSEX will be done to ensure that two navies participating in it are able to smoothly coordinate and communicate in times of any disaster or war.

 

2.     INDIA-JAPAN UNDERTAKES MARITIME PARTNERSHIP EXERCISE IN BAY OF BENGAL

·         A Maritime Partnership Exercise was held between Indian Navy (IN) and Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) in the Bay of Bengal in a non-contact mode amid COVID-19. The Indian side was represented by Indian Naval Ships (INS) Shivalik and INS Kadmatt while JMSDF Ships Uraga and Hirado the participated from Japanese side.

1.     INDIA STATE OF FOREST REPORT 2021

·         Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav released the India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2021, the biennial report of the Forest Survey of India (FSI) which showed that the forest and tree cover in India has risen by 2,261 square Kilometers (sq km) in 2 years (compared to 2019).

·         The total rise of 2,261 square Kilometers (sq km) includes an increase of 1,540 sq km of forest cover and 721 sq km of tree cover compared to the 2019 report.

·         Andhra Pradesh has grown the maximum forest cover of 647 sq km.
·         India’s total forest and tree cover is now spread across 80.9 million hectares, which is 24.62 percent of India’s geographical area.

·         Total mangrove cover in the country is 4,992 sq km with an increase of 17 sq Km as compared to the previous 2019 report.

·         The total carbon stock in India’s forest is estimated to be 7,204 million tonnes with an increase of 79.4 million tonnes in the carbon stock of India as compared to the 2019.

 

2.     ‘ OPERATION MISSION AMANAT FOR RAILWAY PASSENGERS TO TRACK & GET BACK LOST LUGGAGE

·         The Railway Protection Force (RPF) of Western Railway will help in getting back the lost luggage. It will ensure more  safety and security of luggage and belongings of the passengers.

·         Under the Operation Mission Amanat, the details of lost luggage and belongings along with photos are posted on the official website of the western railway.
