1. International Volunteer Day – 5 December
i. The International Volunteer Day was observed across the world with the theme Global Applause– give volunteers a hand.
ii. This year's theme recognizes the volunteers worldwide and their efforts in making peace and sustainable development a reality.
iii. The Day was designated in 1985 by the United Nations as an international observance day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism.

2. World Soil Day 2016 – 5 December
i. The World Soil Day was observed at the Food and Agriculture Organization headquarters in Rome.
ii. The theme for the WSD is “Soils and pulses, a symbiosis for life.”
iii. The year 2016 was declared as the International Year of Pulses by 68th UN General Assembly.

3. The 6th Ministerial Conference of Heart of Asia
i. The 6th Ministerial Conference of the Heart of Asia - Istanbul Process concluded on after adopting the Amritsar Declaration. The declaration recognised terrorism as the biggest threat to peace and demands an immediate end to all forms of terrorism.
ii. The Conference was co-chaired by Arun Jaitley, Union Finance Minister and Salahuddin Rabbani, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
iii. The Sixth Ministerial Conference was inaugurated by Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, President of Afghanistan and Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India.

4. RBI to issue new Rs 50 & Rs 20 currency notes
i . The Reserve Bank of India announced to issue Rs 50 and Rs 20 denomination banknotes.
ii. The old Rs 50 and Rs 20 notes will also continue to be legal tender.
Features of Rs 50 denomination banknotes
• These notes of the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 will not have inset letter in both the number panels.
• It will bear the signature of Dr Urjit R Patel, Governor of Reserve Bank of India.
• The year of printing that is '2016' will be printed on the reverse of the banknote.
Features of Rs 20 denomination banknotes
• The new Rs 20 denomination currency notes will be printed with inset letter ‘L’ in both the number panels.
• It will bear the signature of Dr Urjit R Patel, Governor of Reserve Bank of India.
• The year of printing '2016' will be printed on the backside of the banknote.


5. Narendra Modi won reader’s poll for the TIME Person of the Year
i.  Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the winner of online reader’s poll for the TIME ‘Person of the Year 2016’.
ii. Among the total votes cast, 18 percent went to Modi, which is almost two times more than the percentage of yes votes received by U.S President Barack Obama.
iii. The Indian elected head was also way ahead of U.S presidential nominee Hillary Clinton who received 4 percent votes and the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, who just received 2 percent votes in his favour.

7. Srinidhi Shetty - Miss Supranational
i. Srinidhi Shetty, a girl from Mangalore, was crowned Miss Supranational 2016. She was crowned at a ceremony held in Krynica Zdroj, Poland.
ii. India became the first country to win Miss Supranational twice in three years.

8. Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J Jayalalithaa passes away
i.  Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa passed away on 5 December 2016.
About Jayalalitha
• In the 1980s, she was made the propaganda secretary of AIADMK by founder-leader MG Ramachandran
• She entered the Rajya Sabha in 1984
• In 1989, she was elected to the Tamil Nadu assembly for the first time after which she became the Chief Minister of the state in 1991
• She is the second female chief minister of Tamil Nadu after Janaki Ramachandran
• She is called Amma (Mother) and Puratchi Thalaivi (Revolutionary Leader) by her followers.
• Before starting her political career, she acted in over 100 movies mostly in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.  She also acted in few Hindi and English films.

9. B S Bhullar appointed Chief of Directorate General of Civil Aviation
i. Senior IAS officer B.S. Bhullar  was appointed the Chief of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
ii. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is the Indian governmental regulatory body for civil aviation under the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
iii. It is headquartered in New Delhi.

10. O Panneerselvam sworn-in as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu
i. O Panneerselvam was sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu on 5 December 2016. He succeeded AIADMK supremo and former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister who  died at the Apollo Hospital.
ii. Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao administered the oath of office and secrecy for Panneerselvam
iii. This was Panneerselvam’s third swearing-in as Chief Minister. Earlier, he had served Tamil Nadu as its Chief Minster, during 2001-02 and 2014-15, after Jayalalithaa was unseated by the courts.
