1. PM MODI INAUGURATES GLOBAL CONFERENCE ON CONSUMER PROTECTION
i. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated a global conference on
consumer protection in New Delhi. This is the first time that an international
conference on consumer protection is being organized by India for countries of
the region.
ii. 22 countries from East, South and South-East Asia are
participating in the international conference. These include China, Singapore,
South Korea, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
2. 7 COMPANIES GIVEN LOI FOR 14 MONUMENTS UNDER ‘ADOPT A HERITAGE
SCHEME’
i. 7 shortlisted companies were given ‘Letters of Intent’ for
fourteen monuments under ‘Adopt a Heritage Scheme’ of Ministry of Tourism at
the closing ceremony of ‘Paryatan Parv’ at Rajpath Lawns, New Delhi.
ii. These companies will be the future ‘Monument Mitras’ who would
associate pride with their CSR activities.
iii. TK International Limited shortlisted for the adoption of -
Sun Temple, Konark, SBI Foundation shortlisted for the adoption of - Jantar
Mantar, Delhi.
iv. Raja Rani Temple, Bhubaneshwar, Ratnagiri Monuments, Jajpur,
Odisha, Yatra Online Pvt. Limited shortlisted for the adoption of: Hampi,
Karnataka.
v. Leh Palace, Jammu & Kashmir, Qutub Minar, Delhi, Ajanta
Caves, Maharashtra, Travel Corporation of India Ltd. shortlisted for the
adoption of: Mattancherry Palace Museum, Kochi, Safdarjung Tomb, Delhi
vi. Adventure Tour Operator Association of India shortlisted for
the adoption of: Gangotri Temple Area and Trail to Gaumukh, Mt. StokKangri,
Laddakh, Jammu and Kashmir.
vii. Special Holidays Travel Pvt. Ltd. (With) Rotary Club of Delhi
shortlisted for the adoption of: Agrasen ki Baoli, Delhi, NBCC shortlisted for
the adoption of: Purana Quila, Delhi.
3. AFGHANISTAN PRESIDENT ASHRAF GHANI VISITS INDIA
i. Afghani President Ashraf Ghani was on a national visit to
India. During his visit, he met with the president Ram Nath Kovind and PM Modi.
India and Afghanistan have agreed to work closely with the regional and
international partners to further the objective of seeing Afghanistan emerge as
a stable, peaceful, united and prosperous nation.
ii. The Indian leadership reiterated its support for a negotiated
political reconciliation in Afghanistan that is Afghan-led, Afghan-owned and
Afghan-controlled.
4. MADRAS HC BANS PHOTOS OF LIVING PERSONS ON BANNERS IN TAMIL NADU
i. The Madras high court has banned the use of pictures of living
persons on banners and hoardings in Tamil Nadu. Tamil Nadu’s top officials were
asked to maintain a clean environment and also ensure that there were “no
unnecessary drawings” on buildings and residential places. The order states
that pictures of the chief minister, ministers or politicians cannot be used in
posters or hoardings. It has also banned the use of photos of people sponsoring
the pictures.
5. 3RD GLOBAL INVESTORS’ INDIA FORUM HELD IN NEW DELHI
i. Union Minister of State (I/C) for Power and New & Renewable
Energy, Shri R. K. Singh addressed the 3rd Global Investors’ India Forum in New
Delhi.
ii. The theme of the event was 'Ideate, Innovate, Implement and
Invest in India’ and it was attended by global industry stalwarts. In the
forum, major focus was given on generation of electricity and its distribution
across the country. The event was organized by the ASSOCHAM.
6. SBI SLASHED IMPS SERVICE CHARGES UP TO 80%
i. The State Bank of India has slashed Immediate Payment Service
charges up to 80%. If the users are doing an online transaction of money after
selecting IMPS option, then they will have to pay 80% less charge than what
they used to pay earlier.
ii. After the implementation of the revised charges, online
transactions will certainly become cheaper. After the revision, no IMPS service
charge will be imposed on online transactions under Rs 1000. For the
transactions between Rs 1000 and Rs 10,000, the users will have to pay Re 1
while for an amount between Rs 10,001 and Rs 1,00,000, the users will be
charged Rs 2.
7. INDIAN-ORIGIN COUPLE GETS US AWARD FOR AIDS RESEARCH
i. Indian-origin South African researchers were honored with a
prestigious award for their exceptional contributions in the field of HIV/AIDS.
Professors Salim Abdool Karim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim received the award
from the Institute for Human Virology in Baltimore, US.
ii. The award was presented to them by Robert Gallo, who
discovered HIV as the cause of AIDS‚ at the 19th international meeting of the
IHV.
8. L&T TECHNOLOGY SERVICES CONFERRED WITH CII INDUSTRIAL
INNOVATION AWARD
i. L&T Technology Services Ltd, a leading global pure-play
Engineering Services Company was conferred with the Confederation of Indian
Industry Industrial Innovation Award, 2017.
ii. This award recognized it as one of the most innovative Indian
companies in the services category at the CII Industrial Innovation Awards
ceremony in New Delhi.
9. VIRAT KOHLI OVERTAKES LIONEL MESSI IN FORBES LIST BY $1 MILLION
i. According to the list released by Forbes, Virat Kohli ranks
ahead of Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi when it comes to brand value. The
captain of the Indian cricket has a brand value of $14.5 million which puts him
ahead of Messi on the 7th spot in the top 10 list revealed by Forbes.
ii. The brand value is an athlete’s earnings (excluding salary and
bonus from their sport and all investment income), minus the average income of
the top 10 athletes in the same sport.
10. INDIA HAS 3RD HIGHEST NUMBER OF FAMILY-OWNED BUSINESSES: REPORT
i. India has 108 publicly-listed family-owned businesses, third
highest in the world, while China tops the tally with 167 such companies
followed by the US which has 121, according to the Credit Suisse report.
ii. As per the Credit Suisse Research Institute's latest "CS
Family 1000" report, with an average market capitalization of USD 6.5
billion, India ranks 5th in Asia Pacific excluding Japan, and 22nd globally, in
terms of average m-cap.
11. INDIAN ORIGIN ACTIVIST GINA MILLER NAMED UK’S MOST INFLUENTIAL
BLACK PERSON OF THE YEAR
i. Indian origin campaigner Gina Miller was named UK’s most
influential black person of the year. Gina won a legal challenge seeking
Parliamentary approval for triggering Brexit.
ii. 52-year-old Miller, ranked on top in the 2018 'Powerlist' of
100 people of African and African Caribbean inheritance published in London by
Powerful Media.
12. ALOK KUMAR PATERIA APPOINTED AS ADG, CISF
i. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the
appointment of Shri Alok Kumar Pateria, IPS as Additional Director General,
CISF.
ii. He has been appointed on deputation basis for a period upto
May 2020.
13. RAJASTHAN CM LAUNCHES RAJIV MEHRISHI'S 'INDIA 2017 YEARBOOK'
i. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje launched an e-book
titled 'India 2017 Yearbook', compiled by the present Comptroller and Auditor
General of India Rajiv Mehrishi.
ii. The e-book includes a plethora of information on important
dignitaries, state policy, public schemes and important data about
demographics, trade, economy and many other topics.
