·                The report titled “Synchronizing energy transitions towards possible Net-Zero for India: Affordable and Clean Energy for All”, AK Mohanty, Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) mentioned that India aims to produce 100 GigaWatt(GW) of nuclear power by 2047.

·                India’s emissions would range between 0.56 billion-tonne of carbon dioxide (btCO2 )and 1.0 btCO2 in 2070.

·                During 2020-2070, Government needs financial funding of about Rs 150 -200 lakh crore i.e. USD 40 to 50 billion per year

2.              ZIMBABWE LAUNCHES NEW GOLD-BACKED CURRENCY “ZIG”

·                The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe(RBZ) has launched the new currency “Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG)”  backed by gold and foreign currencies to replace its local currency  Zimbabwe dollars(ZW$)– Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) dollar.

·                Zimbabwe Gold is backed by a composite basket of foreign currency and precious metals, mainly gold.

·                The new ZiG notes and coins will be issued in the denomination of 1ZiG, 2ZiG, 5ZiG, 10ZiG, 20Zig, 50ZiG, 100ZiG, and 200ZiG.

3.              NEW PRESIDENT OF SLOVAK REPUBLIC

·                Peter Pellegrini, former Prime Minister (PM) of Slovakia, is set to become the President of the Slovak Republic.

·                He won the Slovakia presidential election 2024 defeating Ivan Korčok, a former diplomat, with 53% of the vote.

·                Pellegrini will succeed Zuzana Caputov, the first female President of Slovakia.

4.              PARIS OLYMPICS:  FIRST WOMAN TO REPRESENT INDIA AS JURY MEMBER

·                Bilquis Mir, a Water sports promoter and athlete (canoeist ) from Jammu and Kashmir(J&K), is set to become the first woman from India to serve as a jury member at the 2024 Summer Olympics which is set to be held in Paris, France

·                Bilquis was nominated as a jury member by the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association.

 

5.              JAPANESE GRAND PRIX 2024 

·                Belgian-Dutch driver Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the Formula 1 (F1) Japanese Grand Prix (GP) 2024 held at the Suzuka International Racing Course in Suzuka, Japan

·                Red Bull’s Sergio Perez (Mexico) and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. (Spain) won the second and third positions, respectively.

 

6.              WORLD HEALTH DAY 2024 – APRIL 7

·                The United Nations (UNWorld Health Day is a global health awareness day annually observed across the globe on 7 April to draw attention to a specific health topic of concern to people worldwide.

·                7 April 2024 marks the 76th anniversary of the founding of WHO in 1948.

7.              HURUN’S GLOBAL UNICORN INDEX 2024

·                According to the 6th edition of “Global Unicorn Index 2024”report published by Hurun Institute, India is ranked at 3rd position in the index with 67 unicorns (down to 1 compared to 2023).

·                United States of America(U.S.A.) continued to be at top position with 703 unicorns which accounted for 48% of world total number of unicorns.

·                India led by food delivery start-up Swiggy (USD8 billion) followed by Dream11(USD8 billion) and Razorpay (USD7.5 billion).

 

8.              SAUDI ARABIA TO CHAIR UN WOMEN’S RIGHTS COMMISSION

·                The United Nations(UN) Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) has unanimously appointed Saudi Arabia to chair its 69th session in 2025.

·                Abdulaziz Alwasil, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the UN, has been elected as the chair of the CSW

·                 CSW Established in 1946, it is UN’s intergovernmental body that promotes gender equality and women’s empowerment.

·                It is a  functional commission of the UN’s Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

·                CSW membership comprises 45 States elected by ECOSOC on the basis of following equitable geographical distribution:13 members from Africa,11 from Asia,9 from LatinAmerica and Caribbean,8 from Western Europe and other States,4 from Eastern Europe

9.              WOW WORLD LITERATURE PRIZE

·                A renowned Kannada poet, writer, and an activist Mamta G. Sagar won the WOW World Literary Prize from the World Organization of Writers (WOW)

·                She is a facilitator at the Srishti Manipal Institute of Art, Design, and Technology, Bengaluru (Karnataka).

·                The award ceremony was held as part of the VII World Literary Festival “WOW-LIFFT-2024” held in Nigeria, Abuja

10.           2024 JOHN L. “JACK” SWIGERT JR. AWARD

·                Chandrayaan-3 mission team of Indian space agency, ISRO(Indian Space Research Organisation) has received the 2024 John L “Jack” Swigert Jr. award for Space Exploration.

·                Chandrayaan-3:is the 3rd lunar exploration of India, launched on 14th July, 2023 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh(A.P).

·                The mission comprises a lunar lander named “Vikram” and a lunar rover named “Pragyan”.

11.           MEMBER OF 16TH FINANCE COMMISSION

·                The Government of India (GoI) has appointed economist Manoj Panda, former Director of the Institute of Economic Growth (IEG), as a full-time member of the 16th Finance Commission (FC) of India.

·                He will hold the office with effect from the date he assume office up to the date of submission of Report or 31st October 2025.

·                In December 2023, the GoI has constituted 16th FC with Arvind Panagariya, former Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog(National Institution for Transforming India) as its Chairman In January 2024,

12.           INDIA GETS 24 IGLA-S ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILES FROM RUSSIA

·                The Indian Army has acquired the first batch of 24 Russia-made Igla-S Man Portable Air Defence Systems (MANPADS) along with 100 missiles

·                This will bolster the Indian Army’s Very Short Range Air Defence (VSHORAD) capabilities.

·                Igla-S include a firing range of 500-6000 m, target altitude from 10-3500m

·                Its Target speed is- head-on up to 400 m/s, and pursuit up to 400 m/s

 

13.           WHO GLOBAL HEPATITIS REPORT 2024

·                World Health Organisation (WHO) in its ‘Global Hepatitis Report 2024 -Action for access in low- and middle-income countriesduring the World Hepatitis Summit (WHS) 2024, organized by World Hepatitis Alliance with the support of the Ministry of Health of Portugal, in Lisbon, on the theme ‘Integrate, Accelerate, Eliminate’.

·                According to it there is alarming increase in deaths caused by viral hepatitis, making it the second leading infectious cause of death globally, after Tuberculosis (TB).

 

14.           SAGAR SAMMAN AWARDS

·                On the occasion of the 61st National Maritime Day (5th April 2024), the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) awarded the SagarSamman Awards acknowledging exemplary contributions within the maritime sector.

·                The observance of National Maritime Day 2024 was centred around the theme “Sustainable Shipping: Opportunities and Challenges”.

·                Cochin Port Authority (CPA) won the SagarShreshthaSammaan for the best turnaround time in non-container category during 2022-23.

15.           NEW PRIME MINISTER OF IRELAND

·                Simon Harris(37 years old), leader of Fine Gael party, was elected as the New Taoiseach (Prime Minister of the Republic of Ireland) by the member of the Dáil (Irish parliament).

·                He received the seal of office from President of Ireland Michael D Higgins

·                Harris becomes the youngest PM of the Republic of Ireland.

 

16.           INTERNATIONAL NARCOTICS CONTROL BOARD MEMBER

·                India’s Jagjit Pavadia was re-elected as a member of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) for the third term from 2025 to 2030.

·                INCB is the independent and quasi-judicial monitoring body for the implementation ofthe United Nations(UN) international drug control conventions.

·                India was also elected as a member of the key UN bodies including the Commission on the Status of Women for the term 2025-2029;

17.           US-INDIA TAX FORUM

·                Tarun Bajaj, was appointed as the Chair of the United States (US)-India Tax Forum of the United States-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF).

·                Tarun Bajaj, a 1988 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, who retired from service in November 2022.

·                USISPF is a not-for-profit institution dedicated to strengthening partnerships between the United States of America (USA) and India.

 

18.           WORLD HOMEOPATHY DAY 2024 – APRIL 10

·                World Homeopathy Day (WHD) is annually observed across the globe on 10 April to raise awareness about homeopathy, a therapeutic system of Medicine, its principles, and its contributions to global healthcare.

·                WHD also commemorates the birth anniversary of Dr Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician and chemist, who is regarded as the founder of homeopathy.

·                The theme for World Homeopathy Day 2024 is “Homeoparivar: One Health, One Family.”
