IVORY COAST BECAME 53RD COUNTRY TO JOIN UN WATER
CONVENTION
·
Ivory Coast (Côte d’Ivoire) become the 53rd Party to the 1992 United Nations (UN) Water Convention which is also
known as the Convention on the
Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes.
With this, Ivory Coast became the 10th African
country to do so.
·
This
development came ahead of the 10th session of
the Meeting of the Parties (MoP) to the Water Convention which will held in Ljubljana, Slovenia
·
Transboundary
Water (TBW) resources are
considered important in Africa, where 63 international transboundary
river basins cover an area of 62% and constitutes for 90% of the total surface
water.
·
The UN Water Convention, was adopted in Helsinki, Finland on 17th March 1992 but it came into force on 9th October, 1996.

AIFF AWARDS 2023-24
·
All India
Football Federation (AIFF) announced
the winners of AIFF annual awards
2023-24 during the award ceremony held in New Delhi
·
Lallianzuala Chhangte, an Indian Men’s Football Player from Mizoram, was named the AIFF Men’s Footballer of the year
2023-24 for the second consecutive time.
·
IndumathiKathiresan, Indian Women’s football player from Tamil Nadu
(TN) named AIFF Women’s Footballer
of the year 2023-24. She became the first Football Player from TN to receive
the award.
·
David Lalhalansanga (22-year old), young striker was awarded
the AIFF Promising Men’s Player of the
Year for 2023-24 and Neha (18-year
old), was awarded the AIFF Promising
Women’s Player of the Year for 2023-24.

All India Football Federation (AIFF) is the apex governing body of football in
India.

OLYMPIAD (IMO) 2024

A six-member student team
from India achieved the country’s best-ever
performance at the 65th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)
held in Bath, United Kingdom.

RBI SETS UP COMMITTEE TO REVIEW FEE STRUCTURE
FOR WHITE-LABEL ATMS
·
The Reserve
Bank of India (RBI) has established
a committee headed by Sunil Mehta, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) to review the fee structure for
White-Label ATMs (WLAs).
·
The committee
will assess fee structure, existing Automated Teller Machine (ATM)
infrastructure, and international best practices and will submit its report to
T Rabi Sankar, Deputy Governor, RBI.
·
WLAs are ATMs set up,
owned, and operated by non-banks.
·
The non-bank
ATM operators are authorised under the Payment & Settlement Systems Act,
2007 by the RBI.
·
In 2012, the
RBI allowed non-banking companies
(incorporated under the Companies Act) to set up, own, and operate WLAs.
·
In 2016, the
RBI permitted White-Label ATM Operators (WLAOs) to source cash from retail outlets, and in 2019, the RBI allowed on-tap authorisation for WLAs.

46TH SESSION OF UNESCO
WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE
·
Prime
Minister (PM) NarendraModi inaugurated the 46th Session of the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Heritage
Committee(WHC) 2024 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi,
·
This is
the 1st time India is hosting the WHC Meeting
·
India will contribute USD 1
million to the UNESCO World
Heritage Centre for capacity building, technical assistance, and
conservation of world heritage sites, particularly benefiting Global South
countries.
·
Charaideo Maidam, an ancient burial ground in Assam has been nominated as India’s 43rd World Heritage Site.

WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL PASSPORTS 2024
·
According to
the ,India’s rank has dropped from 80th position (in January
2024) to 82nd position by
providing visa free or visas on arrival access to 58 countries.
·
India has been placed at 82nd position
along with Senegal and Tajikistan.
·
Singapore has again topped the global
rankings of the most powerful passports in the world as it provides visa-free
entry to 195 countries.
·
As per the
latest rankings, total 5 countries share
the 2nd spot: France, Italy, Germany,
Spain and Japan and have visa-free access to 192 countries.

WORLD CHESS DAY 2024 – JULY 20

The United
Nations (UN)’s World Chess Day, also known as International Chess Day, is
annually observed across the globe on July
20 to celebrate Chess, one of the most ancient, intellectual and
cultural games, which promotes fairness, inclusion and mutual respect.

·
The United Nations (UN)
designated International Moon Day (IMD)
is annually observed across the globe on July
20 to commemorate the anniversary of the first human landing on the Moon with
the Apollo 11 mission.

The
2024 theme for
International Moon Day is ‘Illuminating
the Shadows’, which encourages people to explore the hidden wonders of
the moon.
·
United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs
(UNOOSA) works to promote
worldwide cooperation in the exploration of space, and in the utilisation of
space science and technology for sustainable economic and social development.
·
It serves as
the secretariat for the UN
COPUOS.

UNAIDS’ 2024 GLOBAL AIDS UPDATE
·
According to
the Joint United Nations Programme on Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) (UNAIDS)’s
2024 Global AIDS Update titled “The Urgency
of Now: AIDS at a Crossroads”, an estimated 39.9 million (with a range of 36.1–44.6 million) people across the globe are living with
HIV at the end of 2023.
·
In 2023, new
HIV infections reached 1.3 million,
surpassing the target of 370,000 by 2025.
·
Women and girls accounted for 44% of all new infections in 2023.
·
The report estimates that if countries meet the 2025 global targets,
some 29 million people will be living with HIV globally in 2050.
·
The UNAIDS, which started operations in 1996, is leading the global effort to end
AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 as part of the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs).

10. ZIMBABWE
JOINS UN WATER CONVENTIONS
·
Zimbabwe, a Southern African country, has joined the Convention on the Protection and Use of
Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes (United Nations (UN) Water Convention), showcasing its political will for cross-border
water cooperation.
·
Zimbabwe became the 54th Party to
the UN Water Convention and
the 11th African nation to
join the treaty.
·
The
Convention provides a global legal and
intergovernmental framework for sustainable transboundary water management,
supported by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), one of the 5 regional commissions of the UN.
