1.       PRIME MINISTER OF PORTUGAL

·         Luis Filipe Montenegro Cardoso de Morais Esteves, leader of the Democratic Alliance (AD) Party has been appointed as the Prime Minister (PM) of Portugal

·         The AD party secured 91 seats in the 230-member legislature in the election.

2.       WADA FOUNDATION PRESIDENT

·         World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA)’s Foundation Board, re-elected Witold Banka as independent President, and Yang Yang as Vice President (VP), for a third and final three-year term.

·         World Anti-Doping Agency, an international independent agency composed and funded equally by the sport movement and governments of the world.

·         WADA Headquarters – Montreal, Canada

 

3.       PRESIDENT OF THE UNGA

·         Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock was elected President of the 80th session of the New York, United States of America (USA) based United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), following her win of 167 votes in favour out of 188 seats in a secret ballot.

·         AnnalenBaerbock becomes the first woman from the Western European Group to hold the post and the fifth woman overall to lead the UNGA.

·         The one year presidency rotates among the world body’s five regional groups : African Group; Asia-Pacific Group; Eastern European Group; Latin American and Caribbean Group (GRULAC) and Western European and Other States Group (WEOG)

·         The UNGA, established in 1945, is the main representative body of the UN, comprising all 193 Member States.

·         Its headquarters is located in New York, USA

·         It is the main policy-making organ of the organization and provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues by the Charter.

·         The Assembly meets from September to December each year (main part) and thereafter, January to September (resumed part) as required.

·         Each of Member States has one vote, which is taken on designated important issues such as recommendations on peace and security, election of Security Council.

 

4.       PRESIDENT OF POLAND

·         Poland’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) announced that Karol Nawrocki, a nationalist conservative won the second round of Poland’s presidential election with 50.89% of the votes, defeating RafaÅ‚ Trzaskowski, the liberal Mayor of Warsaw (Poland)

5.       CII PRESIDENT

·         Rajiv Memani, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of New Delhi based Ernst & Young (EY) India, took over as the President of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) for the Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26).

·         He succeeded Sanjiv Puri, Chairman and Managing Director (MD) of Kolkata (West Bengal, WB)-based ITC Limited.

·         R.Mukundan, MD and CEO of Tata Chemicals Limited, has assumed office as CII President-Designate for FY26.

 

6.       PRESIDENT OF SOUTH KOREA

·         Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), was elected as the 14th President of the Republic of Korea (South Korea)

·         Lee Jae-Myung secured 49.42% of the votes

·         The election was necessitated after the impeachment of former President Yoon Suk Yeol due to his brief imposition of Martial law.

 

7.       ADC TO PRESIDENT OF INDIA

·         Lieutenant Commander(LtCdr) Yashasvi Solanki, has been appointed as an Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the President of India (POI)

·         She is the first woman officer from the Indian Navy has been posted as ADC to the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces.

·         An ADC serves as a personal assistant and facilitates coordination and communication between the President and various arms of the establishment, ensuring seamless staff work and official protocol.

·         The President typically has five ADCs, three from the Army, one each from the Navy and Air force.

·         In addition, the President may choose officers from any of the armed forces at their discretion to serve in the role of ADC.

 

8.        ‘BHARAT GEN’  SUMMIT

·         It is India’s first indigenously developed, government-funded, Artificial Intelligence (AI) -based Multimodal Large Language Model (LLM) designed to support 22 Indian languages.

·         The Bharat Gen Summit 2025 held at is India’s biggest event for Generative AI and LLM.

·         The summit also featured the Generative AI Hackathon 2025, inviting students to develop AI solutions for real-world problems.

·         Bharat Gen is developed under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) and implemented through Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) Foundation for Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet of Everything (IoE) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

 

9.       ADB’S PRESIDENT VISIT TO INDIA

·         Masato Kanda, President of Manila (the Philippines) based Asian Development Bank (ADB) was on his 1st official visit to India in May 2025.

·         ADB President Masato Kanda announced USD 10 billion, aimed at transforming urban infrastructure including metro extension, new regional rapid transit system (RRTS) across India in the next 5 years.

·         The state government of Tripura will get USD 85.4 million loan from ADB to support a major green upgrade in the state.

·         The ADB withdrew USD 434.25 million loan to a proposed 1000 MegaWatt (MW) Solar Park in Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council in Assam, following a request from the Ministry of Finance (MoF) of Government of India (GoI).

·         The main reason for the withdrawal of the project was the opposition of local Karbi, Naga, Kachari and Adivasi communities against the land diversion to the project, citing displacement of 24 villages in the project area.

10.    NEW RAMSAR SITES IN INDIA

·         Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, Ministry of Environment announced the designation of Khichan (Phalodi) and Menar (Udaipur) wetlands in Rajasthan as Ramsar Sites.

·         Rajasthan now has 4 Ramsar Sites, including Sambhar Salt Lake and Keoladeo Ghana National Park (Bharatpur).

·         With this, India’s total Ramsar Sites rise to 91, the highest in Asia and third globally after the United Kingdom (UK) (175) and Mexico (142).

·         The Menar Wetland Complex, popularly known as the “Bird Village“, is located across Menar and Kheroda villages in Vallabhnagar Taluka, Udaipur District, Rajasthan.

·         The Khichan Wetland, located in the northern Thar Desert, spans across Phalodi and Jodhpur Districts, Rajasthan

·         The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, an intergovernmental treaty adopted in 1971 in Ramsar(Iran), provides a framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation of wetlands and their resources.
India joined the Ramsar Convention on 1st February 1982.

·         The first Ramsar Sites in India were Keoladeo National Park (Rajasthan) and Chilika Lake (Odisha), designated in 1981.

·         Tamil Nadu (TN) holds the highest number of Ramsar Sites in India with a total of 20 sites, followed by Uttar Pradesh (UP) with 10 sites, and Rajasthan with 4 sites.

·         The largest Ramsar Site in India is Sundarbans Wetland (West Bengal, WB) covering 423,000 hectares (designated in 2019).

·         The smallest Ramsar Site is Renuka Wetland (Himachal Pradesh, HP) covering 20 hectares (designated in 2005).
