WB,
BILL & MELINDA GATES FOUNDATION AND UNICEF PLEDGE 600MN FOR
CERVICAL CANCER
·
World Bank (WB), the Bill & Melinda
Gates Foundation and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) pledged nearly USD 600 million towards
eliminating cervical cancer.
·
This commitment was made during
the first-ever ‘Global
Cervical Cancer Elimination Forum: Advancing the Call to Action’ held
in Cartagena, Colombia in March
·
The forum was dedicated to catalyze
national and global momentum to end this preventable disease.
·
Cervical cancer ranks as the fourth most prevalent cancer among
women worldwide.

RBI
AND BANK INDONESIA SIGN MOU
·
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the Bank Indonesia (BI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for
establishing a framework to promote the
use of local currencies of both countries, such as the Indian Rupee (INR)
and the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR), for cross-border transactions.
·
It aims to promote the use of INR and
IDR bilaterally.
·
The MoU covers all current account
transactions, permissible capital account transactions, and any other economic
and financial transactions as agreed upon by both countries.
4.
RBI AMENDS CARD RULES
·
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in
exercise of the powers conferred by Section 35A of the Banking Regulation (BR)
Act, 1949 and Chapter IIIB of the RBI Act 1934, amended the ‘Master Direction – Credit Card and Debit
Card – Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2022’
·
As per it, card issuers are barred to
enter into any arrangement with card networks for the issuance of credit cards
that restrain them from availing the
services of other card networks.
·
This will benefit as customers as they will get the freedom to choose from multiple card networks.

PRITZKER
ARCHITECTURE PRIZE 2024
·
Architect
Riken Yamamoto of Yokohama, Japan, has been named the 2024 Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, the highest global architectural recognition.
·
He is the 53rd laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize and the 9th Japanese architect to win the
prize.
·
The award includes a cash prize of USD
100,000 and a bronze medallion.
·
Pritzker
Architecture Prize was established by the Chicago-based
Pritzker family through their Hyatt Foundation in 1979.
·
Jay A. Pritzker founded the prize with
his wife, Cindy Pritzker.
·
This annual award is often labeled as
the “Nobel of Architecture.”.
·
BalkrishnaDoshi
is the first and only Indian architect to win the prize.
·
He received the Pritzker Prize in 2018.

NETHERLANDS’
ERASMUS PRIZE 2024
·
Eminent Indian Writer and Padma Shri Awardee Amitav Ghosh was awarded the Erasmus
Prize 2024 by the Netherlands’ PraemiumErasmianum Foundation for his writings on the planetary crisis and
climate change.
·
He was honoured for his contribution to
the theme of the Erasmus Prize
2024 “imagining the unthinkable”.
·
The theme refers to the expression of
the unprecedented global crisis ‘climate change’ in written words.
·
He was the first English-language writer
to be honoured with the Jnanpith Award,
India’s highest literary award, in 2018.
·
He also got Padma Shri in 2007 in the field of ‘literature and education’.
·
He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in
1990 for his book “The Shadow
Lines.”
·
The prize consists of a cash prize
of 150,000 Euros and a
momento, which is a folded ribbon with a titanium plate at both ends.

Former President of Sri Lanka, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has authored a book
titled ‘The Conspiracy to Oust Me
from the Presidency’ which speaks about his political downfall to a
“conspiracy” involving foreign and local parties.

Gotabaya Rajapaksa served as the 7th
Executive President of Sri Lanka from 2019 to 2022.

of Women Judges (IDWJ) is annually observed across the globe on 10 March to raise awareness about
gender equality within the legal profession.

to promote the full and equal participation of women at all levels of the judiciary.

& EFTA SIGNED USD 100 BN FREE TRADE PACT
·
India and
European Free Trade Association (EFTA), signed a Trade and Economic
Partnership Agreement (TEPA)
commiting an investment of USD 100
billion over 15 years.
·
Under the TEPA, EFTA commits to promote
investments to increase the stock of foreign direct investments (FDI) in India.
·
EFTA market offers 100% coverage of
non-agricultural products and tariff concessions on Processed Agricultural
Products (PAP).
·
EFTA was established in 1960 by the EFTA Convention for the promotion of
free trade and economic integration for the benefit of its 4 Member States.

Among EFTA countries, Switzerland is the
largest trading partner of India followed by Norway.

MHA
NOTIFIED CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT ACT RULES, 2024
·
Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notified
the rules under the Citizenship (Amendment)
Act, 2019 (CAA-2019).
·
These rules, called the Citizenship (Amendment) Rules, 2024 to
fast-track the citizenship process for non-Muslims,
immigrants such as Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians from
Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, who had entered India before December
31, 2014.
·
The rules are notified over four years
after Parliament passed this law on December 11, 2019 amending the
Citizenship Act of 1955.
·
These rules will enable the persons
eligible under CAA-2019 to apply for grant of Indian citizenship.
·
CAA doesn’t apply to Indian citizens. It’s aimed at granting Indian
citizenship to certain foreigners who faced religious persecution in
neighboring countries due to their faith.
·
The CAA doesn’t apply to areas under
the Sixth Schedule of the
Constitution and those covered by the Inner Line Permit system, protecting the interests of tribal and
indigenous communities in the North-Eastern region. Residents of these areas
can’t apply for Indian citizenship under the CAA.

AND RUBELLA CHAMPION’ AWARD

The Ministry of Health and Family
Welfare(MoHFW), Government of India, was
recognised with the “Measles and
Rubella Champion” Award by the
Measles and Rubella Partnership(M&RP) for its efforts towards
Measles and Rubella Disease Prevention.

America (USA) has received the award on behalf of MoHFW during the event held
at the American Red Cross Headquarters in Washington D.C., USA
·
The award recognizes India’s efforts to
combat measles and rubella with innovative strategies like using “measles as a tracer” to strengthen
routine immunization India’s proactive Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination
campaign in high-risk areas, robust surveillance systems, and effective
public-awareness initiatives have been instrumental.
·
50 districts consistently report no
measles cases, while 226 districts haven’t reported rubella cases over the past
12 months.
·
Measles
and Rubella are Vaccine-Preventable Diseases (VPDs),
and India aims to eliminate them through its Universal Immunization Programme
since 2017.
·
M&RP is a global initiative to
reduce the global mortality rates for measles and rubella.
·
M&RP is led by the American Red
Cross, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF), Global Alliance for Vaccines
and Immunisation (GAVI), United States Centers for Disease Control and

AGNI-5
MISSILE TESTED WITH MIRV TECHNOLOGY UNDER
MISSION DIVYASTRA
·
India successfully conducted the 1st flight test of an
indigenously developed Agni-5 ballistic
missile by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), equipped with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry
Vehicle (MIRV) technology from
DR. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha.
·
The flight test was conducted as part of
India’s nuclear-capable missile named Mission Divyastra (divine
weapon).
·
With the flight test of Mission Divyastra, India has joined the
select group of nations that have MIRV capability.
·
Agni-5,
developed by DRDO, is a long-range missile that has been in India’s arsenal
since the early 1990s.
·
The Agni-5 missile, which uses a 3-stage
solid-fuelled engine, has a range of more than 5,000 kilometers (km), developed to enhance India’s national
security.
·
Agni-6, the next upgrade, is expected to
be a full-fledged ICBM with a range exceeding 7,000 km.

DEFEATS ENGLAND TO WIN ANTHONY DE MELLO TROPHY 2024
·
The Indian men’s test cricket team led
by Rohit Sharma won the Anthony de Mello
Trophy 2024 by defeating England (captained by Ben Stokes) in the
five-match test series for 4-1 held in five venues across India.
·
Ravichandran Ashwin played his 100th Test for India in the fifth
Test against England at Dharamshala, where he also took five wickets in the
second innings.
·
Ashwin is the ninth bowler and the
second Indian(After Anil Kumble – 619) to pick up 500 Test wickets.
·
Bumrah became the quickest Indian fast bowler to 150 Test wickets
(in the second Test match against England), achieving the feat in 34 Test
matches.
