1.         SEA DEFENDERS-2024: U.S – INDIA JOINT EXERCISE

·           ‘Sea Defenders-2024,’ is a joint exercise between the United States Coast Guard (USCG) and the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

 

2.         NO SMOKING DAY 2024-13  MARCH

·           Every year, No Smoking Day is celebrated across the world to spread awareness about the harmful effects of smoking.

·           The theme for No Smoking Day 2024 is ‘Protecting children from tobacco industry interference.’

·           According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the tobacco epidemic is one of the biggest public health threats globally, killing over 8 million people every year.

 

3.         UPI TRANSACTIONS BETWEEN INDIA AND NEPAL

·           NPCI International Payments Ltd (NIPL) has partnered with Nepal’s leading payment network, Fonepay Payment Service Ltd, to enable cross-border Unified Payment Interface (UPI) transactions between India and Nepal.

·           With approximately 30% of Nepal’s tourists being Indian, this partnership is expected to significantly improve the payment experience for Indian travellers.

 

4.         PM NARENDRA MODI PRESENTS NATIONAL CREATORS AWARD

·           Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented the first-ever National Creators Award at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.

·           The National Creators Award encompasses 20 categories, highlighting the diversity and depth of creativity across different fields.

 

5.         INDIA RECEIVES ‘MEASLES AND RUBELLA CHAMPION’ AWARD

·           India has been awarded the prestigious ‘Measles and Rubella Champion’ Award by The Measles and Rubella Partnership. This award recognizes India’s exemplary efforts in preventing measles and rubella diseases.

·           The award was presented at the American Red Cross Headquarters in Washington D.C., USA.

·            Ambassador SripriyaRanganathan, Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India, received the award on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.

 

6.         SUDHA MURTY NOMINATED TO RAJYA SABHA

·           President DroupadiMurmu nominated author and philanthropist SudhaMurty to the Rajya Sabha.

·           SudhaMurty is an Indian educator, author, philanthropist, and the former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation.

·           She is also a member of the public healthcare initiatives of the Gates Foundation.

·           Murty has established the Murty Classical Library of India at Harvard University.

 

7.         JAMES ANDERSON JOINS ELITE 700 TEST WICKETS CLUB

·           England’s James Anderson claimed his 700th Test wicket by dismissing India’s Kuldeep Yadav in Dharamsala on the morning of Day 3 of the final Test against India.

·           This historic milestone makes Anderson the third bowler to reach the 700-wicket mark in Test cricket.

 

8.         VERY SHORT RANGE AIR DEFENCE SYSTEM

·           Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted two successful flight tests of Very Short-Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile from a ground based portable launcher off the coast of Odisha from Integrated Test Range, Chandipur.

·           VSHORADS is a fourth generation man-portable air-defence system designed and developedindigenously by Research Centre Imarat (RCI)

·           The VSHORADS missile has a range of up to 6 kilometers

 

9.         NEFT RECORD OF 4.10 CRORE DAILY TRANSACTIONS

·           The National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) has recorded its highest ever single-day transactions with the payment system processing 4.10 crore transactions on that day.

·           NEFT has been operational 24/7, 365 days a year since December 16, 2019, while RTGS followed suit from December 14, 2020.

·           Both NEFT and RTGS systems are managed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

·           NEFT settles retail payments, whereas RTGS handles wholesale transactions.

·           NEFT, or National Electronic Funds Transfer, is a fund transfer mechanism started by the RBI in 2005.

·           It settles transactions in half-hourly batches.

 

10.      NEW CRIMINAL LAWS TO COME INTO FORCE FROM JULY 1, 2024

·           The three newly enacted criminal laws - Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023, Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023 and BharatiyaSakshyaAdhiniyam 2023 - will come into effect from July 1.

·           BharatiyaNagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhit a, 2023 and BharatiyaSakshyaAdhiniyam, 2023 will replace the Indian Penal Code of 1860, the Code of Criminal Procedure of 1898 and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872.

 

11.      INDIA IS 3RD LARGEST DIGITALISED COUNTRY AMONG G20 NATIONS

·           According to the State of India's Digital Economy Report, 2024, by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), India is the third largest digitalised country in the world, only behind the United States of America (USA) and China.

·           However, at the level of individual users, India is ranked 12th in terms of digitalisation among the G20 countries.

·           The study is based on ‘CHIPS’ framework wherein it has scored countries on five pillars - connect, harness,innovate, protect and sustain.

·           India has the world's second-largest internet network with more than 700 million users.

 

12.      NEW DIRECTOR GENERAL OF NSG

·           The Centre appointed 1990 batch IPS officer, Daljit Singh Chaudhary as the director general (DG) of the National Security Guard (NSG).

·           NSG WAS Established On 22 September, 1986, under the National Security Guard Act, 1986.

·           Headquarters: New Delhi.

·           The National Security Guard (NSG) is an elite counter-terrorism unit under the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

·           National Security Guard personnel are referred to as ‘Black Cats’.

 

13.      INDIA'S SHARE OF GLOBAL DIGITAL PAYMENTS VOLUME AT 46%

·           During the Digital Payments Awareness Week on March 4, 2024, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das revealed that digital transactions in India have experienced a remarkable 90-fold increase over 12 years.

·           Retail digital payments in India surged from 162 crore transactions in the financial year 2012-13 to over 14,726 crore transactions in 2023-24 (till February 2024).

·           India's Global Share in Digital Transactions:India accounts for nearly 46% of the world's digital transactions, based on 2022 data.

 

14.      AMIT SHAH LAUNCHES UMBRELLA BODY FOR URBAN CO-OP BANKS

·           Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah inaugurated the umbrella organization for Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs), the National Urban Cooperative Finance and Development Corporation Limited (NUCFDC), in New Delhi.

·           The NUCFDC has received a Certificate of Registration (CoR)from the RBI to operateas a Non-Banking Finance Company (NBFC) and serve as the umbrella organisation for the urban cooperative banking sector.

·           The NUCFDC aims to raise capital, with plans to reach a capital base of Rs.300 crores.

·           At present, there are over 1,500 scheduled and non-scheduled Urban Cooperative Banks in India with a total number of branches exceeding 11,000.

·           The banks have a deposit size of over Rs 5.33 lakh crore, andtotal lending of more than Rs 3.33 lakh crore

 

15.      INDIA'S FIRST UNDERWATER METRO

·           Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurate India's first underwater metro rail service in Kolkata.

·           The new metro line, called the Howrah Maidan-Esplanadesection, will be the country's first transportation tunnel beneath a major river.

·           It passes beneath the River Hooghly, which separates Kolkata and Howrah cities on its east and west banks

·           The Howrah metro station, part of this new line, will hold the distinction of being India's deepest metro station.

 

16.      DIGITAL INTELLIGENCE PLATFORM FOR TELECOM FRAUD

·           Department of Telecommunications (DoT)’s launched ‘Digital Intelligence Platform (DIP)’ for coordination among the stakeholders to curb misuse of telecom resources in cyber-crime and financial frauds, and ‘Chakshu (चक्षु )’ facility on Sanchar Saathi portal (https://sancharsaathi.gov.in), a pioneering initiative empowering citizens to proactively report suspected fraud communication.

·           Chakshu’ facilitates citizens to report suspected fraud communication received over call, SMS or WhatsApp to defraud like KYC expiry or update of bank account / payment wallet / SIM / gas connection / electricity connection etc.

 

17.      ADITI SCHEME DEFENCE STARTUPS

·           Shri Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Acing Development of Innovative Technologies with iDEX (ADITI) scheme during DefConnect 2024 in New Delhi.

·           Objective of the Scheme is to promote innovations in critical and strategic defence technologies, with a particular focus on supporting start-ups.

·           Under the scheme, start-ups can receive a grant-in- aid of up to Rs 25 crore to support their research,development, and innovation efforts in defence technology.

·           The ADITI scheme worth Rs 750 crore for the period 2023-24 to 2025-26 falls under the iDEX (Innovationsfor Defence Excellence) framework of Department of Defence Production (DDP), Ministry of Defence.

 

18.      FIRST 100% FDI IN DEFENSE FACILITY

·           Swedish defence company Saab has initiated construction on a new manufacturing facility in India for its renowned Carl-Gustaf M4 weapons.

·           The facility is situated in the state of Haryana, specifically at MET City in Jhajjar.

·           Saab has received approval for 100% foreign direct investment, leading to the establishment of a new company named Saab FFVO India Pvt Ltd.

 

19.      KHELO INDIA ATHLETES NOW ELIGIBLE FOR GOVERNMENT JOBS

·           The Khelo India athletes will now be eligible for government jobs.

·           In this regard, the Department of Personnel and Training and Sports Ministry have made progressive revisions to the eligibility criteria for sportspersons seeking government jobs

 

20.      RESERVE BANK OF INDIA'S UDGAM PORTAL FOR UNCLAIMED DEPOSITS

·           The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) informed that 30 banks are facilitating people to search their unclaimed deposits/accounts through Unclaimed Deposits-Gateway to Access information (UDGAM) portal

·           UDGAM is an online portal developed by RBI.

·           It facilitates the registered users to search unclaimed deposits/accounts across multiple banks in one place in a centralised manner.

·           All unclaimed deposits/accounts that are part of the Depositor Education and Awareness (DEA) Fund of RBI can be searched in the UDGAM portal.

·           The total value of unclaimed deposits stood at Rs 42,270crore as of March 2023.

·           Unclaimed deposits:  The balance in savings or current accounts not operated for 10 years and termdeposits not claimed for 10 years from the date of maturity are classified by banks as unclaimed deposits.

 

21.      NATIONAL YOUTH PARLIAMENT FESTIVAL 2024

·           YatinBhaskar Duggal from Haryana won the first prize in the National Youth Parliament Festival,2024, while VaishnaPitchai from Tamil Nadu won the second prize and Kanishka Sharma from Rajasthan the third prize.

·           Eighty-seven State-level winners assembled in New Delhi for the finals in the Youth Parliament.

 

22.      INDIAN NAVY SAVE LIBERIAN-FLAGGED CONTAINER VESSEL

·           Indian Naval Ship (INS) Kolkata mission- deployed in the Gulf of Aden responded to a request from MSC Sky II, a Liberian- flagged Container Vessel, which was reportedly attacked by a drone/ missile, at about 1900 h (IST), approximately 90 nm South East of Aden.

·           The crew of 23 personnel, including 13 Indian nationals, are confirmed to be safe following the incident.

 

23.      INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY: 8TH MARCH

·           2024 theme is “Invest in women: Accelerate progress”

·           Clara Zetkinproposes a Women's Day celebration, and International Women's Day is celebrated annually from this point forth that isa day for Women in 1911.
