1. INDIAN NAVY’S ‘SAMUDRA SETU’
·
As
a part of the Centre government’s plan to repatriate stranded Indians abroad
due to COVID-19 outbreak, Indian Navy has launched Operation “Samudra Setu”
(Sea Bridge) to bring back 1000 Indians from Maldives.
·
In
this regard, Indian Navy has sent two India Naval Ships (INS) viz. Jalashwa and Magar on
May 5, 2020 to Maldives capital Male to commence the first phase of the
evacuation operations of Indians stranded abroad from May 8, 2020.
2. SURAKSHIT DADA-DADI & NANA-NANI ABHIYAN
CAMPAIGN
·
The NITI Aayog in association with Piramal Foundation(the philanthropic arm of the
Piramal Group) launched virtually the ‘Surakshit
Dada-Dadi & Nana-Nani Abhiyan’ campaign to ensure well
being of senior citizens during the COVID-19 pandemic.
·
Aim to create awareness about various aspects of senior
citizens’ health and lifestyle including preventive measures and requisite
behavioural changes in view of COVID-19 pandemic.
·
The
campaign will reach over 2.9 million senior citizens in 25 Aspirational
Districts across Assam, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh(MP), Maharashtra,
Rajasthan & Uttar Pradesh(UP)
3. YOUNG CAREER AWARD 2020 IN NANO
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
·
Professor
Saurabh Lodha of Electrical Engineering of IIT Bombay received Young Career Award 2020 in Nano Science and Technology by the Department
of Science and Technology(DST),
Government of India to recognize his contribution for the development of two dimensional Van der Waals material based
logic transistor technologies beyond silicon and nanoelectronic.

He has
developed new materials and processes to improve the thermal stability and
reliability of the thin(1-2 nm) gate dielectric of the transistor and lower the
resistance of metal contacts to the transistor and to obtain electrical
impurities at a higher level and reduce the failure rate and last longer.
4. TARUN BAJAJ APPOINTED AS DIRECTOR ON RBI CENTRAL
BOARD
·
The
government appointed Economic Affairs Secretary Tarun Bajaj, a 1988
batch Indian Administration Service(IAS) officer, as a director on the central
board of the RBI.
·
He
replaces Atanu Chakraborty, who retired on April 30.
·
The
Central Office of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Kolkata but was
permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937.
5. CHAIRPERSON OF PARLIAMENT’S PUBLIC ACCOUNTS
COMMITTEE
·
Adhir
Ranjan Chowdhury, Congress Leader of Lok Sabha was reappointed as Chairperson
of the Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee(PAC) by Lok Sabha
Speaker Om Birla.
·
The
PAC is the oldest Parliamentary Committee in which 15 members from the Lok
Sabha and 7 from the Rajya Sabha are elected every year for the 22 member panel
of PAC.
·
To
examine the audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General(C&AG) of
India on the income and expenditure of the autonomous and semi-autonomous
bodies
6. TIU BANS EGYPTIAN TENNIS PLAYER YOUSSEF HOSSAM FOR
LIFE IN MATCH-FIXING CASES

On
May 5, 2020, Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), the organisation responsible for
investigating match-fixing in tennis, has banned Egyptian tennis player Youssef
Hossam (21) for life after being involved in a number of match-fixing
and corruption cases.

7. BOOK- VIJYANT AT KARGIL: THE LIFE OF A KARGIL WAR
HERO

The book
titled as ‘Vijyant at Kargil: The Life of a
Kargil Hero’ authored by Vijyant’s father Colonel VN Thapar and writer Neha Dwivedi, a martyr’s daughter.
·
Its
e-book will be released on May 15. It is published by Penguin Random House.
·
It is
the 1st biography about Vir Chakra awardee(posthumously) Captain Vijyant Thapar’s journey to join the
Indian Military Academy and the experiences that shaped him into a fine
officer.
