1. IAMAI
REPORT
·
On May
6, 2020 According to ‘Digital in India’ report by the Internet & Mobile
Association of India(IAMAI) &
Nielsen shows that for the 1st time has more internet users in rural areas than urban,
where rural India had 227 million active internet users, 10% more than urban
India’s about 205 million, as of November 2019.
·
India
exceeds another milestone with 504 million active Internet users aged 5 years
old or above, 53 million more than 451 million in March 2019, which makes
it the 2nd largest internet user
behind China, which has about 850 million users.
·
The
United States (US)has about 280-300 million users.
·
At the
state level, Delhi retains
the top spot in terms
of Internet penetration followed by Kerala,
Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.
·
Among
the metro cities, Mumbai has
the highest internet population of 13 million, a growth of 12% followed by
Delhi with 11.3 million, Bengaluru with 6.6 million along with 6.2 million in
Kolkata
2. INDIA’S
ENERGY DEMAND FALLS BY 30%
·
In
accordance with the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA), “Global
Energy Review 2020-The impacts of the COVID-19 crisis on global energy demand
and CO2 emissions” India’s energy demand has faced a 30% decrease due to 40
days lockdown to contain COVID-19.
·
In
India, energy demand would decline for the first time, following on
from low demand growth in 2019.
·
Globally,
the report projects that energy demand will fall 6% in 2020.Also 57% of global
oil demand has declined at an unprecedented scale due to decline in Road
transport and global aviation activities.
3. RIAL WILL
COVERT TO TOMAN
·
On
May 04, 2020, Iran, recovering from the horrific outbreak of
Coronavirus (COVID-19), has now started efforts to get its economy back on
track.
·
In
this sequence, the parliament of Iran has approved a bill on national
currency denomination, which allows to cutting four zeros from its national
currency Rial & to rename it as ‘Toman’ which
is equal to 10,000 rials.
·
Now
this bill will be presented before the committee headed by Iran’s supreme
leader Ayatollah Khamenei for approval & the Central Bank of Iran- CBI(also
known as Bank Markazi) will be given two years to change the currency.
4. UNEP
EXTENDS BOLLYWOOD ACTRESS DIA MIRZA’S TERM AS GOODWILL AMBASSADOR TILL 2022

On May
07, 2020, United Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP), the leading environmental authority in the
United Nations (UN) system, has extended the Bollywood actress &
environmentalist Dia Mirza‘s
term as its National Goodwill Ambassador for
another two years till the end of 2022.

INTELLIGENCE CHIEF MUSTAFA AL KADHIMI SWORN IN AS 6TH PRIME
MINISTER OF IRAQ

Mustafa
al-Kadhimi former head of Iraq’s intelligence
agency, was sworn in as the country’s 6th Prime
Minister (PM). This has ended the leadership crisis that had been going on
in the country for 6 months.

TRUMP NOMINATES SENIORINDIAN-AMERICAN DIPLOMAT MANISHA SINGH AS US ENVOY TO
OECD

On 5th
May 2020, United States President Donald Trump nominated senior Indian American
diplomat Manisha Singh, Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business
Affairs at the State department as his envoy to the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development(OECD) with
an Ambassador rank.
7. WORLD
ATHLETICS DAY 2020: MAY 7

World
Athletics Day (WAD) was introduced by the IAAF (International Association of
Athletics Federation) to increase awareness about athletics and to encourage
youth to take up sports.
