1.       INDIAN NAVY – BANGLADESH NAVY BILATERAL EXERCISE BONGOSAGAR

·         The 3rd edition of Indian Navy (IN)-Bangladesh Navy (BN) Bilateral Exercise ‘Bongosagar 2022’ commenced at Port Mongla, Bangladesh.

·         It consists of Harbour Phase, and a Sea Phase in the Northern Bay of Bengal. 

 

2.       ABHILASHA BARAK BECOMES 1ST WOMAN COMBAT AVIATOR IN THE INDIAN ARMY

·         Captain Abhilasha Barak, (26 years old) from Haryana, has become the first woman combat aviator to join the Indian Army Aviation Corps as a helicopter pilot. 

·         She graduated at a ceremony held at the Combat Army Aviation Training School in Nashik, Maharashtra. 

·         The Army Aviation Corps, raised in November 1986, operates ALH, Rudra helicopters (an armed variant of ALH), Chetaks, Cheetahs and Cheetal helicopters

·         In 2021, the Indian Army has decided to allow women officers to opt for its aviation wing. 

·         Until now, the women officers were assigned only ground duties in army aviation. 

 

3.       NATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT SURVEY (NAS) 2021

·         The Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education has released the National Achievement Survey (NAS) 2021 report assessing the state of the School education system in India.

·         The report provides a comprehensive evaluation of children’s learning competencies at classes III, V, VIII and X on subjects such as languages, mathematics, and science with a cycle period of three years.

·         The last NAS Survey was conducted in 2017.

·         The Survey saw participation of about 34 lakh students from 1.18 lakh schools in 720 districts from both rural and urban areas.

·         The National average percentage of students declined to 59 percent for Class third, dropping by 10 percent to 49 percent in class fifth, 41.9 percent in class eight and 37.8 percent in class ten.

·         Among the States, Maharashtra scored above average with a score of 59 percent in class 3 but it consistently dropped to 49 percent, 41 percent and 37.8 percent in class 5, 8 and 10 respectively.

 

4.       RBI CANCELS REGISTRATION OF 5 NBFCS

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in exercise of the powers conferred under Section 45-IA (6) (iv) of the RBI Act, 1934 has cancelled the Certificate of Registration (CoR) issued to the following five Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs).

·         The non-bank lenders whose registrations were cancelled by RBI on Wednesday include UMB Securities Ltd, Anashri Finvest Ltd, Chadha Finance Private Ltd ,Alexcy Tracon Pvt Ltd and Jhuria Financial Services Pvt Ltd.

·         The RBI also revised the ceiling on loans to individuals for carrying out repairs/additions/alterations to their homes to Rs 10 lakh in metros from Rs 5 lakh; and Rs 6 lakh in rural to and semi urban areas from Rs 2 lakh earlier.

 

5.       BRICS’S NDB TO OPEN INDIA’S REGIONAL OFFICE IN GUJARAT

·         New Development Bank (NDB) formerly referred to as the BRICS(Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) Development Bank, is set to open its regional office in India at the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), Gujarat

·         Indian Regional Office(IRO), in coordination with NDB Headquarters(Shanghai), will focus on initial project preparation and technical assistance, pipeline development, project implementation and monitoring as well as regional portfolio management.

 

6.       SBI INTRODUCES XPRESS CREDIT ON YONO

·         The State Bank of India (SBI) has launched the personal loan product ‘Xpress Credit’ for salaried customers on its digital banking platform “YONO”.

·         The eligible customers can avail of personal loans, Real-time Xpress Credit (RTXC), up to Rs 35 lakhs through the YONO app, without any paperwork

 

7.       KISHORE JAYARAMAN RECEIVES ORDER OF BRITISH EMPIRE AWARD

·         The Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) was presented by the Queen of England to Kishore Jayaraman, President of Rolls-Royce for India and South Asia region, for his services to international trade

·         About Kishore Jayaraman: Kishore Jayaraman is a board member of the UK-India Business Council (UKIBC), a non-profit organisation which supports setting up UK businesses in India.

 

8.       ANWAR HUSSAIN SHAIK IS NEW CHAIR OF WTO COMMITTEE

·         An Indian Officer, Anwar HussainShaik would take the role as  the chair of the World Trade Organisation’s Committee on Technical Barriers on Trade from Elisa Maria Olmeda de Alejandro from Mexico, after a gap of ten years.

·         TBT Committee work involves two broad areas — review of specific measures and strengthening implementation of the TBT Agreement.

·         WTO is a 164-member multilateral body which formulates rules for global exports and imports and adjudicates disputes between countries on trade-related issues.

·         India has been a member since 1995.

·         Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland.

·         Director-General: NgoziOkonjo-Iweala. 

 

9.       PARAM PORUL SUPERCOMPUTER INAUGURATED AT NIT-TIRUCHIRAPPALLI

·         The supercomputer was built based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between NIT Tiruchirappalli and C-DAC in order to establish 838 TeraFlops Supercomputing Facility under NSM.  

·         PARAM PORUL is equipped with a mix of Central Processing Unit (CPU) nodes, Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) nodes, High Memory nodes, High throughput storage and high performance Infiniband interconnect

·         It works on Direct Contact Liquid Cooling Technology to obtain a high power usage effectiveness and thereby reducing the operational cost.  

·         So far under the National Superconducting Mission, 15 supercomputers have been installed across the nation with compute capacity of 24 petaflops.

 

10.    GOLF-JUSTIN THOMAS WINS PGA CHAMPIONSHIP 2022

·         Justin Thomas, an American professional golfer, won the 104th PGA Championship (2022) and claimed his 2nd Wanamaker Trophy, defeating Will Zalatoris (America). 

·         The 2022 PGA Championship was held in Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the United States of America(USA). 

·         The PGA Championship is an annual golf tournament conducted by the Professional Golfers’ Association of America. It is one of the four men’s major championships in professional golf.

 

11.    PM NARENDRA MODI VISIT TO JAPAN FOR QUAD LEADERS’ MEETING 2022

·         The Prime Minister (PM) of India Narendra Modi visited Japan to participate in the 4th and 2nd in-person QUAD (Quadrilateral) Leaders’ Meeting 2022 in Tokyo, Japan along with the United States (US) President Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.; and PM of Australia, Anthony Norman Albanese.

·         The QUAD countries are Australia, India, Japan, and the US.

·         The meeting saw the announcement of a Quad Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation Package (Q-CHAMP) with ‘mitigation’ and ‘adaptation’ as its two themes.

·         The QUAD nations also announced the launch of ‘Quad Fellowship program’ which will be offered by the Quad to students from four countries.

·         The Government of India (GoI) and the Government of the US has signed an Investment Incentive Agreement (IIA) in Tokyo. 

·         QUAD  was established shortly after the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 to coordinate humanitarian assistance.

·         The first QUAD Leaders’ Meeting held in March 2021, in-person Summit in Washington D.C., US in September 2021; and virtual meeting in March 2022.

·         It has also established six leader-level working groups on the Covid-19 pandemic, climate change, technology, cybersecurity, space and infrastructure.

 

12.    INTERNATIONAL BOOKER PRIZE

·         The 2022 International Booker Prize for Translated Fiction was awarded to ‘Tomb of Sand’ written by Geetanjali Shree and translated by Daisy Rockwell.

·         The book was originally published in Hindi as Ret Samadhi in 2018.

·         This is the first book in any Indian language to win the prestigious International Booker Prize and this is the first novel translated from Hindi to win the award.

·         In 1997, Arundhati Roy became the first Indian to win the Booker Prize for her novel, “The God of Small Things.”

·         The International Booker Prize was instituted in 2005 as the “Man BookerInternational Prize” and is awarded every year for a single book that is translated into English and published in the UK or Ireland.     

 

13.    ‘INS NIRDESHAK’ INDIAN NAVY’S SURVEY VESSEL LAUNCHED BY GRSE 

·         The second of the four Survey Vessels (Large) (SVL) ‘Nirdeshak’ (Yard 3026), was launched at Kattupalli, Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

·         The ship was built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in collaboration with L&T Shipbuilding Limited for the Indian Navy.

·         The first of class ship ‘Sandhayak’ was launched on 05 December 2021 at GRSE, Kolkata.

·         The new SVL ships will replace the existing Sandhayak Class survey ships with new generation hydrographic equipment to collect oceanographic data. 

·         The new vessel takes its name from a former Indian Naval Survey ship, Nirdeshak, which was decommissioned in December 2014 after 32 years of glorious service.

 

14.    INDIAN NAVY SUCCESSFULLY TESTS SURFACE TO AIR MISSILE SYSTEM FROM WARSHIP

·         The Indian Navy successfully tested its ship-based surface to air missile system by taking down a low flying target.

·         The test fire took place from Talwar Class Indian Navy warship – INS Teg.

·         A surface-to-air missile, also known as a ground-to-air missile or surface-to-air guided weapon, is a missile designed to be launched from the ground to destroy aircraft or other missiles.

·         SAM can be Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM) and Medium Range Surface to Air Missile (MRSAM).

·         LRSAM: to defend against any type of airborne threat including aircraft, helicopters, anti-ship missiles, and UAVs as well as cruise missiles and combat jets. 

·         MRSAM: High-response, quick reaction, vertically launched supersonic missile, designed to neutralize enemy aerial threats – missiles, aircraft, guided bombs, helicopters.
