1.       WIHU KUH FESTIVAL OF TANGSA TRIBE

        Tangsa, the traditional tribal community of Arunachal Pradesh (AP) celebrated the annual festival ‘WihuKuh’ in June 2023.

        WihuKuh, translating to “paddy transplantation festival”, marks the beginning of the agricultural season and a cultural exhibition that enclose the spirit of the Tangsa people.

 

2.       FAO REPORT ON FOOD IMPORTS

        According to the  Food Outlook Biannual Report On Global Food Markets’ report released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nationsthe global food bill was expected to rise to USD (United States Dollar) 1.98 trillion in 2023, up 1.5% from 2022.

        The food imports by most vulnerable countries are expected to decline in 2023 due to higher quotations for fruits, vegetables, sugar and dairy products, dampening demand.

        The import bill for the group of Least Developed Countries (LDCs) is predicted to decline by 1.5% in 2023 and that for net food-importing developing countries (NFIDCs) to decline by 4.9 percent.

        World rice production is forecasted to rise by 1.3 percent in 2023/24 to 523.5 million tonnes, while international trade is expected to drop by 4.3% in volume terms to 53.6 million tonnes.

        World wheat production in 2023 is expected to decline by 3.0 percent from its all-time high of 777 million tonnes in 2022, mainly due to expected decreases in the Russian Federation and Australia.

 

3.       NATIONAL WATER AWARDS 2022

        Vice President (VP) of India, JagdeepDhankhar, conferred the 4th National Water Awards, 2022 at VigyanBhawan in New Delhi on 41 winners in 11 categories for their exemplary work in the field of water conservation and management.

        Madhya Pradesh (MP) tops the Best State category which is followed by Odisha at 2nd position and Andhra Pradesh (AP) and Bihar at 3rd position jointly.

 

4.       GANDHI PEACE PRIZE FOR 2021

        The Ministry of Culture has named Gita Press, Gorakhpur (Uttar Pradesh),a publishing house, as an awardee of Gandhi Peace Prize for 2021 in recognition of the work done by the institution in community service.

        Gita Press is one of the largest publishers of religious texts such as the Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana and the Upanishads.

        Gandhi Peace Prize for 2020 was awarded to ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh MujiburRahman (Bangladesh)

 

5.       INDONESIA OPEN BADMINTON 2023

        Indian badminton players ChiragShetty and SatwiksairajRankireddy won the Men’s doubles title at the Indonesia Open 2023 by defeating 2022 world champions Aaron Chia and SohWooiYik from Malaysia.

        This was Satwik-Chirag’s first-ever men’s doubles title at the BWF World Tour Super 1000 event and they also became the 1st doubles pair from India to win a title at the Super 1000 event.

        2022 world champion Viktor Axelsen (World no 1) of Denmark, won the men’s singles title at Indonesia 2023, defeating Anthony SinisukaGinting(World no 2) from Indonesia.

6.       CANADIAN GRAND PRIX 2023

        Dutch-Belgium racing driver Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the Formula 1 (F1) Canadian Grand Prix 2023 (Pirelli Grand Prix Du Canada 2023) titlein Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

        Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso finished 2nd and Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton finished 3rd in the Canadian Grand Prix 2023

 

7.       HERO INTERCONTINENTAL FOOTBALL CUP 2023

        Indian Men’s Football Team (also known as Blue Tigers) captained by Sunil Chhetri won the Hero Intercontinental Cup 2023 title by defeating Lebanon team in the finals at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

        According to the FédérationInternationale De Football Association(FIFA) ranking (as of 6th April 2023), India’s men’s football team is ranked at 101.

 

8.       NATIONAL READING DAY 2023 – JUNE 19

        National Reading Day is annually observed across India on 19th June to mark the death anniversary of PuthuvayilNarayanaPanicker(PN Panicker), who is fondly known as the Father of the Library Movement in Kerala.

        In 2017, Prime Minister (PM) NarendraModi declared 19th June of every year (Kerala’s Reading Day) as National Reading Day in India.

 

9.       EX KHAAN QUEST 2023 MULTINATIONAL PEACEKEEPING EXERCISE

        The 19th edition of Multinational Peacekeeping Joint Exercise, Ex Khaan Quest 2023, at the Five Hills Training Area, Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

        The Indian Army(IA) represented by a contingent from the Garhwal Rifles participated in the exercise.

        The exercise co-sponsored by MAF and United States Army Pacific Command (USARPAC) features participation from military contingents and observers from 26 countries, including Indian Army (IA).

 

10.    UN ADOPTS BBNJ TREATY

        The United Nations(UN) adopted the first-ever legally binding international treaty, Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty (BBNJ treaty), also known as the “High Seas Treaty” to protect the high seas and preserve marine biodiversity in international waters.

        It is an agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) which came into force in 1994.

        The agreement was adopted during the “Intergovernmental Conference on Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction” in UN headquarters, New York, United States of America(USA).

        193 member states of the UN adopted the legally binding marine biodiversity agreement following nearly two decades of negotiations over forging a common wave of conservation and sustainability in the high seas beyond national boundaries which covers 2/3 of the Earth’s oceans.

        The treaty establishes a framework for “Marine Protected Areas”.

        The treaty also establishes principles for sharing the benefits of “marine genetic resources” (MGR) collected by scientific research in international waters.

 

11.    2023 PEACE PRIZE OF THE GERMAN BOOK TRADE

        Salman Rushdie, an Indian born British-American writer was awarded the 2023 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade for his literary work and for his resolve and positive attitude in the face of constant threat to his life.

        The 2022 Peace Prize of the German Book Trade was awarded to SerhiyZhadan, an Ukrainian author and musician.

 

12.    NEW DEPUTY GOVERNOR OF RBI

        The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approved the appointment of SwaminathanJanakiraman, Managing Director (MD) (Corporate Banking and Subsidiaries) of the State Bank of India (SBI) to the post of Deputy Governor (DG) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

        He will succeed Mahesh Kumar Jain, whose 5 years tenure ends on June 22nd 2023.

 

13.    EGYPT WON SDAT WSF SQUASH WORLD CUP 2023

        Egypt won the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) World Squash Federation (WSF) Squash World Cup 2023by defeating Malaysia in the finals at, chennai, Tamil Nadu

        Players from 8 countries Egypt, India, Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Hong Kong (China), South Africa, Colombia participated in the WSF Squash World Cup 2023.

 

14.    BOOK “INDIA’S FINANCE MINISTERS”

        Veteran Journalist Ashok Kumar Bhattacharya (AK Bhattacharya) has authored a new book titled “India’s Finance Ministers: From Independence to Emergency (1947-1977)”

        Book  highlights the role of India’s finance ministers who shaped India’s economy in the first 30 years(from 1947 to 1977) after Independence.

 

15.    WORLD REFUGEE DAY 2023 – JUNE 20

        The United Nations (UN)’s World Refugee Day is observed annually on 20th June across the world to honour the strength and courage of refugees around the globe

        The 2023 theme of World Refugee Day is “Hope away from home“.
