1. SCHEMES TO REVIVE WETLANDS AND MANGROVES
·
On World Environment Day 2023 (June 05, 2023), Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi launched
two schemes named Amrit DharoharYojana
and MISHTI Yojana (Mangrove Initiative
for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes) under the Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), to revive wetlands and
mangroves across India.
·
Amrit Dharohar Yojana:The scheme was launched to conserve the existing Ramsar sites and achieve sustainable
ecosystem development through public participation over the next three years,
and make them as the centres of eco-tourism and a source of green jobs for
thousands of people.
·
MISHTI Yojana: The scheme envisages to comprehensively explore the possible area for the
development of mangroves covering nearly 540 sq km, spreading across 11
states and two union territories over 5 years, starting from FY24.
2. TRACKING SDG7: THE ENERGY PROGRESS
REPORT 2023”
·
According to the report titled “Tracking SDG7: The Energy Progress 2023”
released on 6th June 2023, around 2.3
billion people across the globe are still using polluting fuels and
technologies for cooking and around 675 million people did not have access to
electricity in 2021.
·
The report states that the world
is not on track to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 for energy
by 2030.
3. INDIA-MALDIVES EXERCISE ‘EKATHA’
·
The 6th edition of the annual Naval
Exercise ‘Ekatha’ between India and Maldives was scheduled to be conducted
in Maldives to enhance interoperability in diving and special operations.
·
Indian Navy divers and Marine Commandos (MARCOS) went to Maldives to
participate in the exercise along with Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF).
4. WORLD BANK TRIMS INDIA’S GROWTH FORECAST TO 6.3% FOR 2023
·
The World Bank (WB) in its Global Economic Prospects Report-June 2023
has lowered India’s growth outlook to
6.3% for 2023, a 0.3 percentage point downward revision from 6.6% in
January 2023.
·
However, India will remain the fastest-growing economy (in terms of both
aggregate and per capita GDP) of the largest EMDEs (Emerging Market and
Developing Economies).
·
For 2024, WB expects GDP growth rate at 6.4%. While for 2025 forecast, the growth rate is expected at 6.5%.
·
Global growth is projected to decelerate from 3.1% in 2022 to 2.1% in 2023. It will
be 2.4% in 2024 and 3% in 2025.
5. WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY 2023 – JUNE 7
·
The United Nations(UN)’s World Food Safety Day(WFSD) is annually
observed across the globe on 7th June to create awareness about the importance
of maintaining food standards and to promote actions to prevent foodborne
diseases at all levels.
·
The theme of WFSD 2023 is “Food
standards save lives” and the slogan
of WFSD 2023 is “Food safety is
everyone’s business”
6. US DEFENCE SECRETARY LLOYD AUSTIN’S VISIT TO INDIA
·
United States (US) Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin was on a two-day visit
to India, to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation between both nations,
especially in areas of transfer of critical technologies for co-development of
military hardware.
·
India plan to procure 30 MQ-9B armed drones at a cost of over USD 3
billion from US’s General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc.
·
India and the US concluded a roadmap for defence industrial cooperation to fast-track technology tie-ups and
co-production of military platforms such
as air combat and land systems.
7. IEA REPORT 2023
·
According to Renewable Energy Market Update – June 2023 of International
Energy Agency (IEA), the Global renewable
capacity additions are set to increase by 107 gigawatts (GW), the largest
absolute increase ever, to more than 440
GW in 2023.

8. ICRA REPORT ON INDIAN BANKING SECTOR
·
According to the ICRA report on Indian Banking Sector, Bond issuances by banks are projected to
decrease to Rs 90,000 crore in FY24 from a record high of Rs 1.1 lakh crore in FY23.
·
Banks issue bonds as a means to secure
funding and strengthen their capital base.
·
According to the latest RBI’s money market operation data, liquidity surplus has risen from around Rs
56,000 crore to Rs 2.11 lakh crore.
·
Bank credit growth, which was 15% in FY23 could moderate in FY24.
Deposits grew by 9.6% in FY23.
9. INDIA’S MOST VALUABLE BRAND
·
The brand valuation firm Brand Finance released its INDIA 100 2023: The
annual report on the most valuable and strongest Indian brands- June 2023
report in which the Tata Group has
retained its 1st position as India’s most valuable brand at $26,381 Million
in 2023.
·
This is the first time that an Indian brand has breached the brand value
mark of $25 billion.
·
Tata is followed by Infosys at
$13 billion and LIC at $9.8 billion at 2nd
and 3rd position respectively.
·
Mahindra Group is fastest growing brand
amongst the top ten as it performed exceptionally well in FY23 with record profits crossing
Rs 10,000 crore for the first time on revenues of Rs 1,21,269 crore.
·
Taj is India’s strongest brand for the second
consecutive year with Brand Strength Index (BSI) score
10. UNESCO’S 2023 MICHEL BATISSE AWARD
·
Jagdish Sudhakar Bakan, wildlife warden and
District Forest Officer (DFO) of Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu (TN) has been selected for
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)’s 2023 Michel Batisse Award
for Biosphere Reserve Management.
·
He is the first Indian to win Michel Batisse Award.
·
He is currently the Director of Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, Tamil
Nadu.
·
He will receive the Michel Batisse Award for Biosphere Reserve
Management on June 14 2023 in Paris, France.
·
The Michel Batisse Award only
acknowledges completed work accomplished within a Biosphere Reserve in the
World Network. Case studies that concern
future work will not be considered.
·
The award was established in 2005 and is given once every two years during the
Man and the Biosphere Reserves (MAB) Programme Council, in memory of Dr.Michel Batisse, a French Scientist.
11. 2023 RSL CHRISTOPHER BLAND PRIZE
·
British actor and writer Paterson Joseph won the 2023 Royal Society of Literature(RSL) Christopher Bland Prize (5th
edition of the award) for his debut
novel titled “The Secret Diaries of
Charles Ignatius Sancho”.
·
The book is a historical fiction about Charles Ignatius Sancho, who was
the first Black man to vote in England.
·
RSL Christopher Bland Prize is an annual award which honours a debut
writer for their work of fiction or non-fiction, who is first published at the
age of 50 or over.
12. DRDO FIGHT-TESTED “AGNI PRIME” BALLISTIC MISSILE
·
Agni Prime or Agni-P, a New Generation Ballistic Missile was
successfully flight-tested by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off
the coast of Odisha.
·
It is a 2 stage surface to
surface,canisterised solid propellant ballistic missile with dual redundant
navigation and guidance system.
·
It has a range between 1000 to
2000 km (Kilometre)
·
It is lighter than all the earlier Agni
series of missiles.
·
Agni series of missiles includes
the Prithvi short range ballistic missiles and fighter aircraft, which
constitute the backbone of India’s nuclear weapons delivery.
·
The Agni Prime is the 6th missile in the Agni series of ballistic
missiles.
13. IBA MEN’S WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2023
·
3 Indian boxers, Deepak Kumar
Bhoria, Mohammed Hussamuddin and
Nishant Dev, won the bronze medal at
the 22nd edition of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Men’s World
Boxing Championships (2023), held at the
Humo Arena in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan topped the overall medal tally
with 9 medals (5
gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze) followed by
Kazakhstan in 2nd place with 5 medals (4 gold and 1 silver) and Russia at 3rd with 6 medals (2 Gold and
4 bronze).

14. WORLD OCEANS DAY 2023 – JUNE 8
·
United Nations(UN) World Oceans Day is annually observed across the
globe on 8th June to create awareness about the importance of the oceans, a
life source which supports the sustenance of humanity and every other organism
on earth.
·
The theme of World Oceans Day 2023 is “Planet Ocean: tides are changing”.
·
The concept of a ‘World Oceans Day’ was first proposed in 1992 at the Earth Summit 1992, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a
parallel event at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development
(UNCED).
15. 1ST INDIA-FRANCE-UAE TRILATERAL MARITIME EXERCISE
·
The First edition of the India, France and the United Arab Emirates
(UAE) Trilateral Maritime Partnership Exercise was held in the Gulf of Oman
·
The Gulf of Oman borders Iran and Pakistan on
the north, Oman on the south, and the UAE on the west.
16. UNGA ELECTED 5 NEW NON-PERMANENT MEMBER OF UN SECURITY COUNCIL
·
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) elected five countries Algeria, Guyana, Republic of Korea (South
Korea), Sierra Leone and Slovenia as non-permanent members of the UN Security
Council (UNSC) for 2 year period
beginning from January 2024 to December 2025.
·
The newly elected 5 countries will replace the outgoing non-permanent members of Albania, Brazil, Gabon, Ghana and the
United Arab Emirates (UAE), whose two-year terms end on 31st December 2023.
·
192 member countries voted to fill 3 Council seats allocated to the Africa and Asia-Pacific Groups, and 1 each for Eastern Europe and Latin America and the Caribbean.
·
Slovenia won the election for Eastern Europe
with 153 votes against Belarus.
·
Guyana for Latin America & the Caribbean (191 votes), Algeria(184
votes); and Sierra Leone for Africa (188 votes) and the Republic of Korea for
Asia (180 votes) were elected unopposed.
·
The newly elected countries will
join Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique and Switzerland as non-permanent members of UNSC.
·
Algeria has served three times. Guyana and the Republic of Korea have
each served twice. Sierra Leone and Slovenia have each served once.
·
UNSC, established in 1946 under the UN
Charter, is tasked to maintain international peace and security.
·
It has 15 members, 5 of which –The United States of America (USA), Russia,
China, the United Kingdom (UK), and France are permanent members, who have a right
to veto any resolution or decision.
·
The 10 non-permanent members are elected by
the General Assembly for two years, which comprises all 193 UN Member States, half renewed
each year, and are allocated by geographical distribution by region.
·
The presidency of the UNSC is held by each of
the members in turn for one month, following the English alphabetical order of the Member
States names.

17. WHO REPORT ON ORAL DISEASES
·
The Western Pacific Region has the highest
prevalence of tooth loss, around 92 million people in the
region aged 20 years and above are missing all their teeth, including 1 in
5 adults above 60 years.
·
Around half of the countries in the region spent less than USD 10 per
person per year on oral health care.
·
5 countries spend between USD 11 and USD 50, and five high-income
countries spend between USD 51 and USD 300.
·
The global average spending for oral healthcare is USD 50 per person per
year in 2019.
18. ATLANTIC DECLARATION- US-UK ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP
·
Prime Minister of the United Kingdom (UK), Rishi Sunak and President of the United States (US), Joe Biden, signed the “Atlantic
Declaration”, a first-of-its-kind economic partnership between US and UK to
enable future cooperation on issues such as artificial intelligence, and other
economic and commercial relations.
·
Under this, both USA and UK aim to partner to build resilient,
diversified, and secure supply chains and reduce strategic dependencies.
·
The Atlantic Declaration was signed during Rishi Sunak’s first White
House visit as UK PM.
·

19. SIDBI LAUNCHED MISSION EVOLVE TO FINANCE MSMES FOR EVS
·
The Small Industries Development Bank of India)(SIDBI) launched mission EVOLVE (Electric Vehicle Operations and
Lending for Vibrant Ecosystem) in a tie-up
with the Niti Aayog (National Institution for Transforming India), World Bank, Korea-World Bank partnership
facility, and Korean Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) to
finance MSMEs (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises) in the electric vehicles (EV) space.
·
Under the partnership, Niti Aayog will give technical support to SIDBI,
and financial assistance would be provided by the World Bank, the Korea-World
Bank partnership facility and the Korean EDCF.
·
Global Alliance for Mass Entrepreneurship (GAME) received in-principal
approval from SIDBI for designing and structuring a sustainable and scalable
NBFC Growth Accelerator Program (NGAP).
20. WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL HYPERSONIC WIND TUNNEL
·
China has finished constructing the world’s most powerful largest and fastest wind tunnel JF-22, in the
mountainous Huairou district of northern Beijing, China.
·
It has a diameter of 4 metres (13 feet) and can generate extreme high
airflow speeds of up to 10 kilometres (6.2 miles) per second.
·
This is capable of simulating hypersonic flight conditions up to Mach
30, which is 30 times the speed of sound.
