WDMMA 2025 RANKINGS: MOST
POWERFUL AIR FORCE
·
The World Directory of Modern Military Aircraft (WDMMA), are
leased its latest ‘WDMMA Rankings for 2025’.
·
The
Indian Air Force (IAF) surpassed China to become the world’s 3rd most powerful air force
in terms of overall effectiveness and
capability, with USA and Russia
holding the top two spots.
·
IAF ranked at 6th position globally with overall TruVal
Rating (TVR) of 69.4, while China’s People’s Liberation
Army Air Force (PLAAF) with TVR of 58.1, ranked
at 7th position.
·
Japan
Air Self-Defence Force (JASDF) ranked
at 8th position globally, followed
by Israeli Air Force ranked at 9th French Air Force ranked at 10th and the United Kingdom
(UK)’s Royal Air Force (RAF) ranked at 11th
position.
·
The Air Forces
of countries who were ranked lowest on the list: Afghanistan 107th, Syria
106th, Albania 105th, Yemen 104th, and Bosnia & Herzegovina 103rd.
·
The Air Forces of Pakistan and Bangladesh ranked at 18th and 83rd position,
respectively.

GLOBAL FOREST RESOURCE ASSESSMENT
REPORT 2025
·
Food and Agriculture
Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN) released a
report titled “Global Forest Resource Assessment (GFRA) 2025”.
·
As per the report, India ranks 9th globally
with 72.74 million hectares (Mha) of forest cover, representing 2% of the world’s total forests, up
from 10th in the previous assessment.
·
Russian Federation ranks
first globally with 832.6 Mha, accounting for 20% of the world’s forests, followed by Brazil (486.08 Mha) and Canada
(368.81 Mha).
·
Forests cover
around 4.06 billion hectares, or 31% of the world’s land, comprising tropical (45%), boreal (27%),
temperate (16%), and subtropical (11%) forests.
·
Russia,
Brazil, Canada, USA and China together hold more than 50% of the world’s total forest area.
·
The world has been adding
approximately 6.78 Mha of forest annually, primarily due to
restoration initiatives in Asia and Europe.
·
Asia
recorded the highest net gain in forest area
about 1.17 Mha per year between 2010 and 2020.
·
The global deforestation rate declined to 10.9 million
hectares per year in 2015–2025, down from about 17.6 Mha per year in
1990–2000.
·
However, net forest loss (considering both
deforestation and forest expansion) has declined over time, from 10.7 Mha
per year in 1990–2000 to 4.12 Mha per year in 2015–2025.

INDIA RE-ELECTED AS
VICE-CHAIRPERSON OF COP10 BUREAU
·
India was
re-elected as the Vice-Chairperson of the Bureau for the
Asia-Pacific (Group IV) for the term 2025–2027 during
the 10th Session of the Conference of
Parties (COP10) to the International Convention against Doping in Sport (ICADS), held at United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) headquarters in Paris, France.

Azerbaijan was
elected as the Chairperson of the
COP10 Bureau under the World Anti-Doping
Agency (WADA) framework.
·
Vice-Chairs Brazil, representing
Group III, Latin America and Caribbean region.
·
Zambia,
Group Va, African region.
·
Saudi
Arabia, Group Vb, Arab States region.
·
COP10 Bureau
is responsible for guiding discussions, reviewing anti-doping regulations, and
making policy recommendations to strengthen global anti-doping efforts.

GOI TO ESTABLISH FIRST
IIT CAMPUS IN NIGERIA
·
Government of India (GOI) partnered
with the Government of Nigeria to establish the first Indian
Institute of Technology (IIT) campus in Nigeria.
·
This marks the second IIT campus in Africa, following
the establishment of IIT Madras–Zanzibar
in Tanzania (2023).

UNCTAD-16 HELD IN GENEVA,
SWITZERLAND
·
The 16th session of the United Nations Conference on Trade and
Development (UNCTAD-16) was held in Geneva, Switzerland.
·
Theme for UNCTAD-16: “Shaping the future: Driving economic
transformation for equitable, inclusive and sustainable development”.
·
Swiss Federal
Councillor Guy Parmelin was elected President of UNCTAD-16.
·
Antonio
Guterres, Secretary General of UN announced the
launch of ‘Sevilla Forum on Debt’ to create an open, inclusive platform for dialogue and action
on global debt challenge, specifically for developing countries.

4TH FATF PLENARY
MEETING
·
The 4th Financial
Action Task Force (FATF) Plenary Meeting was held, under the Mexican Presidency of Elisa de
AndaMadrazo, in Paris, France.
·
Jamaica and Nigeria joined
the FATF Plenary and Working Group (WG)
meetings for the first time,
along with Kenya, under the Guest
Initiative.
·
The FATF Plenary adopted
the first two mutual evaluation reports under the new assessment system,
covering Belgium and Malaysia, which focuses
on results in tackling money laundering, terrorism, and proliferation
financing.
·
FATF identified three jurisdictions such as Democratic
People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK),
Iran, and Myanmar as high-risk
jurisdictions, also known as
Blacklist.
·
Four jurisdictions,
including Burkina Faso, Mozambique, Nigeria, and South Africa removed
from the list of countries under
increased monitoring, also known as the “grey list”.
·
Grey List countries
includes Algeria, Angola, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Cameroon, Cote d Ivorie,
Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Kenya, Lao People’s Democratic
Republic, Lebanon, Monaco, Namibia, Nepal, South Sudan, Syria, Venezuela,
Vietnam, Virgin Islands (the United Kingdom, UK), and Yemen.

LAUNCHES 6TH ASWC SWC ‘INS ‘MAGDALA’
·
The Cochin Shipyard
Limited (CSL) launched the ‘Indian Naval Ship (INS) Magdala (BY
528)’, 6th in the series
of eight indigenously built Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC)
designed for Indian Navy (IN), at its facility in Kochi, Kerala.
·
78 meter (m) long, 896-tonne vessel is capable of achieving maximum
speed of 25 knots and has an endurance of 1,800 nautical miles.
8. CSL
DELIVERS ASW SWC ‘MAHE’
·
Cochin
Shipyard Limited (CSL), delivered
‘Indian Navy Ship (INS) Mahe’, the first of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water
Crafts (ASW SWCs) to
the Indian Navy (IN).
·
In 2019, the Ministry of
Defence (MoD) signed two contracts for a total of 16 ASW SWC ships, encompassing 8 with CSL and 8 with Garden Reach Shipbuilders &
Engineers (GRSE).
·
INS Mahe, is designed
specifically for shallow-water
anti-submarine operations.
·
It is a 78-metre (m), 900-tonne SWC powered by
diesel engines with waterjet propulsion, providing high speed,
manoeuvrability, and shallow-water capability.
·
It has a maximum speed of 25 knots and an endurance of 1,800
nautical miles.

CHAMPIONSHIPS
·
The 11th edition
of the World Para Powerlifting Championships 2025 was held
at Cairo, Egypt marking the first-ever World Championships
held in Africa.
·
China claimed
its fifth consecutive and sixth overall title as the leading
nation in Para Powerlifting.
·
India’s Joby Mathew
Won bronze in the Men’s 65kg Legend
(Masters) category.

LOGO & ANTHEM FOR
FIDE WORLD CUP 2025
·
Pramod Sawant,
Chief Minister of Goa, unveiled the official logo and anthem for
the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Chess World Cup
2025.
·
The tournament marks its return to India after 23 years,
featuring 206 top players from 82 countries competing for a USD 2 million prize fund.
·
About Logo & Anthem:Logo:
consists of three trapezoidal panels. It includes Green Panel, Red Panel,
Yellow Panel.
·
The official anthem is titled “It’s Your Move” and is
performed by Daler Mehndi.

SULTAN OF JOHOR CUP 2025
·
Indian Junior Men’s
Hockey Team clinched a Silver Medal after
losing by 2-1 to Australia in
the final match of the 13th edition of Sultan of Johor Cup
held in Johor Bahru (JB), Malaysia.
·
This marked India’s 5th Silver at
the Sultan of Johor Cup after 2012, 2015, 2018 and 2019.
·
Great
Britain beat Pakistan to finish in third place (Bronze).
·
The Sultan of Johar Cup
is a week-long annual Under-21 (U-21)
hockey tournament being held in Malaysia since 2011.
·
The tournament saw the
participation of 6 teams
India, Great Britain, New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia, and Malaysia.

TORCHBEARER FOR 2026
WINTER OLYMPICS
·
Indian former sport
shooter and Olympic Gold
medalist Abhinav Bindra appointed as torchbearer for the Milano
Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, scheduled to be held in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy.
·
He will take part in an
Olympic Torch Relay for the second time, after carrying the torch at Paris
2024.
·
He won the gold medal in
the 10 metre (m) air rifle event at the
2008 Beijing Olympics held in China, becoming the first Indian to achieve an Individual Olympic gold.
·
In
2006, he won the gold medal in the 10-m air rifle event at the World
Championships, becoming the first Indian to secure a shooting World Championship title.

WIN AGAINST ARGENTINA IN FIFA U-20 WORLD CUP FINAL
·
Morocco national
football team clinched the International Federation of Association
Football (FIFA) U-20 World Cup title by
defeating Argentina national football team
by 2-0 in the final match held
in Santiago, Chile.
·
Morocco
claimed its first-ever World Cup title at any
level, becoming the first Arab nation
and only the second African team, after Ghana in 2009, to win the FIFA U-20
World Cup.
·
Othmane
Maama (Morocco) won the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
·
Benjamin
Cremaschi (USA) claimed the Golden Boot with 5 goals.
·
Argentina’s goalkeeper Santino Barbi received the Golden Glove.
·
USA
earned the Fair Play Award for sportsmanship.
