1.       CANNES FILM FESTIVAL 2026

·         The 79th annual Cannes International Film Festival 2026 was in Cannes, France.

·         Romanian director Cristian Mungiu won the Palme d’Or for his drama ‘Fjord’.

·         Russian director Andrey Zvyagintsev received the Grand Prix for his political thriller drama ‘Minotaur’.

·         The Jury Prize awarded to “The Dreamed Adventure” by ValeskaGrisebach (Germany) .

·         Best Director award was shared between Javier Calvo& Javier Ambrossi (Spain) for “La Bola Negra” and PaweÅ‚Pawlikowski (Poland) for “Fatherland”.

·         The Best Actor award was shared by Emmanuel Macchia and Valentin Campagne (Belgium) for “Coward”.

·         The Best Actress award was shared by VirginieEfira (Belgium-France) and Tao Okamoto (Japan) for “All Of A Sudden”.

·         The Best Screenplay award was given to Emmanuel Marre (France) for “A Man of His Time”.

·         Debut: The Caméra d’Or (Best First Film) was awarded to “Ben’Imana” by Marie-ClémentineDusabejambo (Rwanda).

 


2.       2027 ASIAN RELAYS AND 2028 ASIAN INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 

·         India was awarded the hosting rights for the 2027 Asian Relays in Chandigarh and the 2028 Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, Odisha by the Asian Athletics Association (AAA).

·         It was announced during its council meeting chaired by Dahlan Al Hamad, AAA President in Hong Kong, China.

·         Bhubaneswar hosts India’s first permanent indoor track-and-field facility capable of staging certified international indoor events, making it the natural choice for the 2028 edition.

3.       CANADIAN GRAND PRIX 2026

·         Italian Mercedes driver KimiAntonelli won the 64th edition of the Canadian Grand Prix (GP), officially known as Formula One (F1) Lenovo Grand Prix du Canada 2026 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

·         Lewis Hamilton of UK, secured second place, and Max Verstappen of the Netherlands, third place.

 

4.       CHEF DE MISSION FOR 2026 CWG

·         The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) officially announced the appointment of former India’s Davis Cup captain RohitRajpal as the country’s Chef de Mission for the 23rd edition of Commonwealth Games (2026 CWG) which is scheduled to be held in Glasgow, Scotland.

·         IOA has also appointed Ravi Bengani as the Deputy Chef de Mission, while Vandana Rao and Rahul Swami will travel with the Indian contingent as general team managers for CWG.

·         PT Usha, President of IOA, alongside RaghuramIyer, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of IOA and VigneshVengalilUjjwal, will be part of the senior leadership delegation.

 

5.       BOOK-THE LIBRARY MAN OF INDIA

·         Book ‘The Library Man of India: The Story of P.N. Panicker’, is authored by P. P. Sathyan.

·         P.N. Panicker is Regarded as the Father of the Library Movement in Kerala, P.N. Panicker led the expansion of the GranthashalaSangham (Library Association) from a few small rooms into a vast network of over 6,000 public libraries across Kerala.

·         P.N. Panicker’s death anniversary on June 19 is observed by the Government of India (GoI) as National Reading Day.

 

6.       BOOK - APNAPAN

·         Book ‘Apnapan: Narendra Modi Sang Mere Anubhav’, authored by Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW).

·         The book was published by Prabhat Prakashan Private Limited.

·         It is a personal and reflective book that chronicles Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s over 35-year association with Prime Minister(PM) Narendra Modi.

 

7.       BOOK INDIA’S FIRST OLYMPIC HOCKEY GOLD

·         Book “India’s Olympic Gold: Hockey Triumph at Amsterdam,” authored by renowned hockey historian K. Arumugam 

·         India won its first Olympic gold in hockey at the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, defeating the Netherlands men’s team in the final.

 

OBITUARY

8.       URDU POET BASHIR BADR PASSED AWAY 

·         Renowned Urdu poet and Padma Shri awardee Dr. Bashir Badr passed away at the age of 91 in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh (MP).

·         The Government of India (GoI) awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 to Bashir Badr in the field of Literature and Education for his contribution towards literature.

·         As collection of 69 ghazals, is considered a Masterpiece of Bashir Badr’s poetry and earned him the SahityaAkademi Award (Urdu) in 1999.

9.       WORLD METROLOGY DAY 2026 – MAY 20

·         World Metrology Day(WMD) is observed annually on 20 May to highlight the importance of metrology, the science of measurement, in everyday life, science, trade, innovation, and environmental sustainability.

·         2026 Theme: “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making”.

·         WMD was established in 1999 by the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM) during the 21st General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) to commemorate the Metre Convention.

·         The first WMD was observed on 20 May 2000.

 

10.    NATIONAL ANTI-TERRORISM DAY 2026 – MAY 21 

·         National Anti-Terrorism Day is annually observed across India on 21 May to mark the death anniversary of former Prime Minister (PM) Rajiv Gandhi, who was assassinated in 1991 in a terrorist attack carried out by a suicide bomber associated with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) atSriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu (TN).

·         Global Terrorism Index (GTI) 2026 The 13th edition of the Global Terrorism Index (GTI)2026, published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), where Pakistan ranked 1st as the country most impacted by terrorism in 2026 with a score of 8.574, while India ranked 13th with a score of 6.428.

 

11.    WORLD TURTLE DAY 2026 – MAY 23 

·         World Turtle Day is observed globally every year on May 23 to create awareness about the conservation of turtles, tortoises, and their natural habitats, while encouraging collective action for their protection and survival.

·         World Turtle Day has been observed every year on May 23 since 2000 to promote awareness about turtle and tortoise conservation.

 

12.    COMMONWEALTH DAY IN INDIA 2026 – MAY 24

·         Commonwealth Day is observed annually in India on 24 May to commemorate the birth anniversary of Queen Victoria in 1819 and to promote fitness, global cooperation, Commonwealth unity.

·         The day was also observed annually across the globe on the second Monday of March (9 March 2026) by the member countries of the Commonwealth of Nations.

·         The idea of the day was championed by Clementina Trenholme, with the first observance held in Ontario, Canada, in 1898 alongside Queen Victoria’s birthday on May 24, and later celebrated across parts of the British Empire, including the Cape Colony and Union of South Africa.

 

13.    WORLD FOOTBALL DAY 2026 – MAY 25

·         The United Nations (UN)’s World Football Day (WFD)is annually observed on 25 May.

·         The first edition of World Football Day was observed on 25 May 2024.

 

14.    INTERNATIONAL MISSING CHILDREN’S DAY 2026 – MAY 25

·         International Missing Children’s Day (IMCD) is annually observed across the globe on 25 May to raise awareness about missing children, promote child safety, and combat abduction, trafficking, and exploitation.

·         The day is symbolized by the “forget-me-not flower,” representing hope for reuniting missing children with their families.

·         Former United States of America (USA’s) President Ronald Reagan designated 25 May 1983 as the first National Missing Children’s Day in memory of six-year-old EtanPatz, who disappeared in New York City on 25 May 1979.

·         In 2001, 25 May was officially recognized as the first International Missing Children’s Day.

 

15.    WORLD HUNGER DAY 2026 – MAY 28

·         World Hunger Day is observed annually across the globe on May 28 to raise awareness about food insecurity and encourage collective action towards achieving zero hunger.

·         2026 Theme: “The End of Hunger is in our Hands”.

·         The first World Hunger Day was observed on May 28, 2011.

 

16.    INTERNATIONAL DAY OF UNITED NATIONS PEACEKEEPERS 2026 – MAY 29 

·         International Day of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers, observed annually across the globe on 29 May to honours the dedication, service, and sacrifice of UN peacekeepers worldwide, while remembering those who lost their lives in the cause of peace.

·         2026 Theme: “Invest in Peace”.

·         It was first observed on 29 May 2003.

·         The UN Blue Helmet/Beret symbolizes UN peacekeeping efforts worldwide.

·         The United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) became the first UN peacekeeping mission, launched on 29 May 1948.

 

17.    INTERNATIONAL EVEREST DAY 2026– MAY 29 

·         International Everest Day is observed annually on 29 May across the globe to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay on 29 May 1953.

·         International Everest Day was first observed in Nepal on 29 May 2008.

 

18.    RBI DECLARED RS 2.87 LAKH CRORE DIVIDEND TO GOI FOR FY26 

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approved a record surplus transfer of Rs 2,86,588.46 crore to the Government of India (GoI) for Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26), higher than last year’s transfer of Rs 2.69 lakh crore.

·         The decision to transfer the dividend was taken during the 623rd meeting of the Central Board of Directors (CBoDs) of RBI, chaired by Dr. Sanjay Malhotra, Governor of RBI in Mumbai       .

·         As on March 31 2026, the balance sheet of RBI expanded by 20.61% to Rs 91.97 lakh crore.

·         The gross income of RBI has increased by 26.42% over the last financial year while its expenditure before risk provisions surged by 27.60%.

·         The board of central bank approved a transfer of Rs 1,09,379.64 crore towards the Contingency Risk Buffer (CRB) forFY26 maintaining CRB at 6.5% of the RBI’s balance sheet.

·         As per the revised Economic Capital Framework (ECB), RBI is required to maintain CRB within a range of 4.5% to 7.5% of the balance sheet size.

 

19.    RBI IMPOSES PENALTIES ON CUB, MINTIFI FINSERVE & NEWA INVESTMENTS

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed monetary penalties on City Union Bank Limited(CUB)MintifiFinserve Private Limited, and Newa Investments Private Limited for non-compliance with various regulatory directions.

·         RBI imposed a penalty of Rs 10.10 lakh on CUB, an Indian private sector bank, forlevcying loan-related charges on certain priority sector agriculture advanes up to Rs 25,000 and for failing to report Self Help Group (SHG) member-level data to credit information companies.

·         A penalty of Rs 3.10 lakh was imposed on Mintifi Finserve, a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC), for failure toupload certain customers’ Know Your Customer (KYC) records to the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR) within the prescribed timeline.

·         RBI imposed a penalty of Rs 2.70 lakh on Newa Investments, a NBFC, for appointing directors without prior RBI approval, leading to a management change involving over 30% of directors.

 

20.    RBI MANDATES 3 YEAR COOLING-OFF PERIOD FOR UCB, RCB

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued final amendment directions for Urban Co-operative Banks (UCBs) and Rural Co-operative Banks (RCBs), introducing a mandatory three-year cooling-off period for directors who complete 10 years of continuous tenure on the board.

·         RBI Sets up Expert Committee to Examine role of Quantum Tech in FinTech-The committee has been formed under the initiative called Quantum Secure and Adaptive Financial Ecosystem (Q-SAFE).

·         The RBI set up an eight-member expert panel under the leadership of Dr Anil Prabhakar, as the convener to study the implications of the risks to the financial system from adoption of quantum technology.
