1.     ASIAN INDIVIDUAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2026

·         The 19-year-old Indian International Master (IM) Savitha Shri Baskar won the gold medal at Women’s Asian Individual Chess Championship 2026 held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

·         Uzbekistan’s Afruza Khamdamova secured silver and China’s Song Yuxin claimed bronze.

·         Chain’s IM Kong Xiangrui won gold in the Open section, Xiao Tong of China (silver) and GM Zhamsaran Tsydypov (bronze).

 


2.       KANE WILLIAMSON ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT

·         New Zealand national cricket team, Kane Stuart Williamson, announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect.

·         He finished as New Zealand’s all-time leading run-scorer with 19,346 international runs, 48 centuries and six double-centuries, and captained the ‘Black Caps’ to their maiden ICC World Test Championship title in 2021.

·         He won the ICC Cricketer of the Year award in 2015, ICC Test Player of the Year in 2019, ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Player of the Tournament in 2019, ICC Spirit of Cricket Award in 2018, and the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal four times.

 

3.       WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY 2026 – JUNE 7 

·         World Food Safety Day (WFSD) is observed annually across the globe on 7 June to raise awareness about the importance of safe food and to encourage actions that prevent, detect, and manage foodborne diseases.

·         2026 Theme: “From Burden to Solutions: Safe Food Everywhere”.

·         The first World Food Safety Day was observed on 7 June 2019, and was later formally recognized by the 73rd World Health Assembly (WHA) through Resolution WHA73.5 in August 2020.

 

4.       WORLD OCEANS DAY 2026 – JUNE 8 

·         The United Nations (UN’s) World Oceans Day (WOD) is observed annually across the globe on 8 June.

·         2026 Theme: “Reimagine: Beyond the world we know, a new relationship with our ocean”.

·         The idea of WOD was first proposed by Canada on 8 June 1992 during the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

·         The inaugural WOD celebration was observed on 8 June 2009.

·         The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization sponsors the World Ocean Network, supporting global ocean-awareness initiatives since 2002.

 

5.       WORLD BRAIN TUMOR DAY 2026 – JUNE 8 

·         World Brain Tumour Day (WBTD) is observed annually across the globe on 8 June to raise awareness, promote early diagnosis, support patients, and advance brain tumour research.

·         WBTD was established and first observed on 8 June 2000 by the German Brain Tumour Association (Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe) in Germany.

·         The Grey Ribbon serves as the international symbol of awareness for brain tumours and brain cancer.

 

6.       WORLD ACCREDITATION DAY 2026 – JUNE 9 

·         World Accreditation Day (WAD) is observed annually across the globe on 9 June to highlight the importance of accreditation, a formal independent process that verifies whether institutions or programmes meet quality standards and are competent to carry out conformity assessment tasks.

·         2026 Theme: “Innovation, Trust and Sustainability: The Power of Accreditation”.

·         The first-ever WAD was observed on 9 June 2008.

 

7.       INTERNATIONAL ARCHIVES DAY 2026 – JUNE 9

·         International Archives Day (IAD) is observed annually across the globe on 9 June to highlight the importance of records and archives in preserving rights, identity, and cultural heritage, and commemorates the establishment of the International Council on Archives (ICA) on 9 June 1948 in Paris, France.

·         theme “#ArchivesForJustice: Rights, Memory & Futures.”

·         The first IAD was celebrated on 9 June 2008, marking the 60th anniversary of ICA.

 

8.       WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR 2026 – JUNE 12

·         The United Nations (UN’s) World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL) is observed annually across the globe on June 12 to raise awareness about child labour and mobilize efforts for its elimination.

·         Theme: “Red card to child labour: Fair play for children, decent work for adults”.

·         The first WDACL was observed on June 12, 2002.

 

9.       RBI’S 2ND BI-MONTHLY MONETARY POLICY

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) conducted the 61st and 2nd Bi-monthly Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting of Financial Year 2026-27 (FY27) under the chairmanship of Sanjay Malhotra, Governor, RBI.

·         The MPC voted unanimously to keep the policy repo rate under the liquidity adjustment facility (LAF) unchanged at 5.25%.

·         Consequently, the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) rate remains at 5.00% and the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) rate and the Bank Rate at 5.50%.

·         The MPC also decided to continue with the neutral stance, indicating rates may go up or reduce further.

·         Gross Domestic Product (GDP) Forecast: The real GDP growth for FY27 is projected at 6.6%.

·         Inflation Projection: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation is projected to be at 5.1% for FY27.

 

10.    NSO’S PROVISIONAL ESTIMATES FOR FY26

·         The National Statistics Office (NSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) released the Provisional Estimates (PE) of Annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for Financial Year 2025-26 (FY26) and Quarterly Estimates of GDP for 4th Quarter (Q4: January-March) of FY26 along with its expenditure components both at Constant (2022- 23) and current prices.

·         India’s GDP for full FY26 stood at 7.7%, which is 60 basis points (bps) higher than 7.1% recorded in FY25.

·         The latest estimates use 2022-23 as base year, a revised GDP series (from previous 2011-12 base year).

·         Real GDP or GDP at Constant (2022-23) prices is estimated at Rs 323.12 lakh crore in FY 26, compared to Rs 299.89 lakh crore in First Revised Estimates (FRE) of GDP for FY25.

·         Nominal GDP or GDP at Current Prices saw the growth rate of 8.9% in FY26 over 9.7% in FY25.

·         It is estimated to reach at Rs 346.36 lakh crore in FY26, up from Rs 318.07 lakh crore in the previous financial year.

 

11.    INDIA SLIPPED TO 7TH IN GLOBAL MARKET CAP RANKINGS

·         India slipped to the 7th spot in global market capital (mcap) rankings, with a total market valuation of USD 4.84 trillion, replaced by South Korea which moved to 6th spot with USD 5.01 trillion market valuation, based on Bloomberg data.

·         Earlier in May 2026, India was pushed to 6th spot by Taiwan which now ranked 5th spot with a total market valuation of USD 5.15 trillion.

·         USA ranked at 1st spot with USD 79.1 trillion mcap; followed by China (USD 16.3 trillion); Japan (USD 8.9 trillion) and Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China (USD 7.6 trillion).

 

12.    GOVERNMENT MEASURES TO DEEPEN THE G-SEC MARKET

·         The Ministry of Finance (MoF) introduced a series of reforms to increase Foreign Portfolio Investor (FPI) participation in Government Securities (G-Secs).

·         The key measures include tax exemptions on interest income, long-term capital gains (LTCG) and short-term capital gains (STCG), expansion of specified securities under the Fully Accessible Route (FAR).

·         Previously, Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs), including SEBI-registered Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs), were taxed under Section 210 of the Income-tax Act, 2025.

·         Any income earned from investments in Government Securities (G-Secs) was subject to tax.

·         The Short-term capital gains (STC) were taxed at 30% and Long-term capital (LTC) gains were taxed at 12.5%.

·         Under the new regime, FPIs/FIIs tax will be Nil for Interest income earned from G-Secs andCapital gains arising from the sale, transfer, exchange or redemption of G-Secs.

 

13.    RBI IMPOSES RS 41.80 LAKH PENALTY ON CANARA BANK

·         RESERVE Bank of India (RBI) imposed a penalty of Rs 41.80 lakh on Canara Bank, a public sector lender, following a supervisory review that identified critical lapses in Know Your Customer(KYC) norms and account classification.

·         Canara Bank failed to upload KYC records of several customers to the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR) within the prescribed timelines.

 

14.    RBI LAUNCHES TWIN USD-INR FOREX SWAP FACILITY

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) introduced the following two special USD-Rupee forex swap facilities to attract foreign currency inflows and support external financing.

·         One for fresh Foreign Currency Non-Resident Bank (FCNR (B)) deposits.

·         Second for eligible External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs) and overseas Foreign Currency Borrowings (OFCBs)

·         The RBI will launch a USD-Rupee forex swap facility for fresh FCNR(B) deposits.

·         The swap facility with RBI will be available in USD only.

·         Authorised Dealer (AD) Category-I banks can avail of the RBI’s forex swap facility for fresh FCNR(B) deposits raised in any freely convertible currency.

·         The RBI will introduce USD-Rupee Forex Swap Facility for ECBs of average maturity of 3 years and above.

·         OFCBs raised by AD category I banks for a minimum maturity of 3 years.

 

15.    SECOND ADVANCE ESTIMATES OF HORTICULTURE 2025-26

·         The Department of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare (DoAFW) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoAFW) released the crop production report Second Advance Estimates of Horticulture Crops for 2025-26, projecting total horticulture production at 3,777.76 lakh tonnes (LT) across 301.51 lakh hectares (ha).

·         The estimates, indicated a 1.90% rise in production and a 0.05% increase in area over 2024–25.

·         Fruit production is estimated at 1,214.75 LT, registering an increase of 3.25%.

·         Vegetable area is projected at 118.79 lakh ha (increase of 0.75%) and production at 2,210 LT (increase of 1.47%), with notable growth in potato (598.89 LT, increase of 2.25%), tomato (214.61 LT, increase of 4.19%), okra, peas, cauliflower, and bottle gourd.

·         Onion area is expected to rise to 20.14 lakh ha (increase of 2.31%), while production remains stable at 307.37 LT.
