1. MUGHALSARAI RAILWAY STATION IN UTTAR PRADESH RENAMED AFTER DEEN DAYAL UPADHYAY
i. The Yogi Adityanath cabinet in Uttar Pradesh has approved a proposal to rename the Mughalsarai railway station near Varanasi after the Jan Sangh leader who died in 1968.
ii. The centre has approved a proposal to rename the Mughalsarai railway station in Uttar Pradesh after RSS ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyaya.
iii. The decision is a part of Adityanath government’s celebrations to mark the centenary of Upadhyay competitions at district and state level. The name of the famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Mumbai was recently changed to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus this year by Central Railways.
iv. The Western Railways this year has changed the name of Elphinstone Road Station in Mumbai to Prabhadevi. The Central government has approved the notice to rename Bangalore City Railway station to “Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna” in honour of Karnataka’s 19th century revolutionary freedom fighter in 2015.
v. The Central government in July 2016 gave its approval to rename Mhow Railway station in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh after Dalit leader B R Ambedkar.

2. ASSAM GOVERNMENT ALL SET TO DISTRIBUTE 13 LAKH SOIL HEALTH CARDS AMONG FARMERS
i. The state government of Assam has decided to distribute 13 lakh Soil Health Cards among farmers.
ii. Agriculture minister Atul Bora has mentioned that 214 soil test kits are operational for this purpose and that the government would soon be announcing a State Agriculture policy.
iii. The emphasis has been given to successfully implement Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sichai Yojna in the state. Under crop insurance the state government has also released a sum of Rs 7.54 Cr as subsidy to farmers.
iv. The govt. has sanctioned 600 cr rupees for Prime Minister Awas Yojna Urban scheme in Assam.


4. INDIAN NAVY BAND JOINS HISTORIC EDINBURGH MILITARY TATTOO
i. A 66-member Indian Navy band has joined the historic Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in the UK.
ii. Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo will join for this year’s musical event where they will mark the 70th year of India’s Independence. The Indian Band will appear with an arrangement of colourful dancers, comprises one officer and 65 musician-sailors.
iii. The Indian band invited to mark the 70th year of Indian independence and the India-UK Year of Culture.
iv. The theme for this year’s week-long event, which runs until August 26, is titled Splash of Tartan, celebrating Scotland’s Year of History, Heritage and Archaeology.

5. GOVERNMENT REVISES THE BASE YEAR OF ALL-INDIA WHOLESALE PRICE INDEX FROM 2004-05 TO 2011-12
i. In a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs stated that Government has revised the base year of All-India Wholesale Price Index from 2004-05 to 2011-12.
i. In the revised series, WPI will continue to constitute three Major Groups namely Primary Articles, Fuel & Power and Manufactured Products. The new series has 697 items as compared to 676 items in old series and is more representative with increase in number of quotations from 5482 to 8331.

6. VENKAIAH NAIDU ELECTED AS 13TH VICE-PRESIDENT OF INDIA
i. BJP-led National Democratic Alliance nominee and former Union Minister, M Venkaiah Naidu has been elected as the 13th Vice President of India. He will take oath as new Vice-President of India on August 11 and will thereby become the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
ii. Over 98% poll percentage was recorded in the Vice-Presidential election 2017. 771 out of 785 MPs voted in the election, however 11 votes were found to be invalid. Mukul Pandey was the assistant returning officer for Vice-Presidential 2017.

7. ECONOMIST RAJIV KUMAR TO BE THE NEW VICE CHAIRMAN OF NITI AAYOG
i. Rajiv Kumar has been appointed the new Vice Chairman of the NITI Aayog. He is an economist who has served in a wide variety of roles in government, think-tanks, international organizations, industry associations and academia.
ii. Vinod Paul has been appointed as a member of the NITI Aayog. He is a doctor by profession. Paul is a paediatrician at AIIMS, and is known to have done substantial work in public health.
iii. Kumar is a senior fellow at Centre for Policy Research and also a chancellor of the Gokhale Institute of Economics and Politics in Pune. He is the founding director of Pahle India Foundation, an organisation that specialises in policy-oriented research and analysis.
iv. He has also served as Director and Chief Executive of the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations, and chief economist of the Confederation of Indian Industries.
v. He has also served as an economic adviser in the Finance Ministry and as an independent director in the Reserve Bank of India.

8. MANJU KUMARI AND VEER DEV GULIA WINS BRONZE IN JUNIOR WORLD WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS
i. India’s Manju Kumari clinched the bronze medal in women’s 59kg category of the Junior World Wrestling Championship in Tampere, Finland. Manju registered victory over Ilona Prokopevniuk of Ukraine.
ii. In the men’s 74kg freestyle category at the Junior World Wrestling Championships, Veer Dev Gulia won bronze medal after defeating Yamasaki Yajuro of Japan.
