1.       FORBES’ 2023 WORLD’S 100 MOST POWERFUL WOMEN

·         The 20th annual ranking of the World’s 100 Most Powerful Women (2023)  features a total of 4 Indian women. Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs is ranked 32nd on the list.

·         The other 3 Indians are Roshni Nadar Malhotra (rank 60), Chairperson of HCLTech; Soma Mondal (rank 70), former Chairperson of Steel Authority of India Limited(SAIL) and Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw(rank 76),  Founder and Executive Chairperson of Biocon India Private Limited.

·         Ursula vonder Leyen, the President of the European Commission, European Union (EU) topped the list for the second consecutive year.

·         Christine Lagarde the President of the European Central Bank is ranked 2nd whereas Kamala Harris, Vice President(VP) of the United States of America (USA) ranked 3rd in the list.

 

2.       QS WORLD UNIVERSITY RANKING FOR SUSTAINABILITY 2024

·         According to the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024, the 2nd edition of the list published by Quacquarelli Symonds(QS), a global higher education analyst, the University of Delhi (DU), ranked 220th (globally), has topped among the 56 Indian Universities featured on the list.

·         DU is ranked 30th among Asian Universities.

·         The University of Toronto, Canada, has topped the list as the world’s most sustainable University followed by the University of California (UCB), Berkeley, the United States of America(USA) at 2nd and the University of Manchester, the United Kingdom (UK) at 3rd place.

3.       WHO REPORT: INDIA ACCOUNTED FOR 66% OF MALARIA CASES

·         As per the 2023 World Malaria Report  by the World Health Organization (WHO), India constituted 66% of malaria cases in the WHO’s South-East Asia region in 2022.

·         Despite an overall decrease of 11.9% in estimated cases between 2021 and 2022 in the region, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Myanmar and Thailand recorded an increases in cases.

·         Plasmodium vivax(P. vivax), a protozoal parasite, contributed to almost 46% of cases in the region.

·         India and Indonesia accounted for about 94% of all malaria deaths in South-East Asia region in 2022.

·         Around 249 million malaria cases have been reported around the world (in 85 malaria endemic countries and areas) which exceeded the pre-pandemic count of 233 million in 2019.

4.       AIIB, UNDP SIGNED MOU FOR PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

·         The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to promote sustainable infrastructure development and address development challenges in Asia and beyond.

·         The MoU recognises the shared objectives of AIIB and UNDP in supporting national climate goals and the 2030 Agenda through financing sustainable development initiatives in common members of operations.

·         AIIB, Headquartered in Beijing, China, is a multilateral development bank focusing on financing sustainable infrastructure for a better future.

5.       REX KARMAVEER GLOBAL FELLOWSHIP (RKGF) AND CHAKRA AWARDS

·         Rex Karmaveer Global Fellowship (RKGF) 2023-24 and the most prestigious and inclusive Karmaveer Chakra Medal were presented to people who have innovative ideas which may make a difference to the world.

·         The awards were presented during the 12th Edition of the annual REX CONCLiVE and Karmaveer Chakra Award event at Shri Nadar School, Faridabad, Haryana.

·         The Rex Karmaveer Chakra Medal is a global civilian honour that recognises people who have made outstanding contributions to humanity.

6.       GOOGLE LAUNCHES ITS LARGEST AND MOST CAPABLE AI MODEL ‘GEMINI’

·         Google launched its largest and most capable multimodal Artificial intelligence (AI) model, ‘Gemini’, which comes in three sizes: Gemini Ultra, Gemini Pro, and Gemini Nano.

·         Gemini Ultra is the first model to outperform human experts on MMLU (massive multitask language understanding) with a score of 90.0%.

·         MMLU uses a combination of 57 subjects, such as math, physics, history, law, medicine, and ethics, to test both world knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

 

7.       INTERNATIONAL CIVIL AVIATION DAY 2023- DECEMBER 7

·         The United Nations (UN) International Civil Aviation Day is annually observed across the globe on 7 December to create awareness about the importance of international civil aviation and its role in the social and economic development of a country.

·         The 2023 theme of International Civil Aviation Day is “Advancing Innovation for Global Aviation Development”.

·         ICAO is funded and directed by 193 national governments (Member states) to support their diplomacy and cooperation in air transport as signatory states to the Chicago Convention (1944).

8.       ARMED FORCES FLAG DAY 2023- DECEMBER 07

·         Armed Forces Flag Day (AFFD) is annually observed across the globe on 7 December to honour the martyrs, men, and women in the armed forces who bravely fought and continue to fight on the borders to safeguard the country’s honour.

9.       NCRB’S CRIME IN INDIA 2022: AROUND 58 LAKH CRIMES REGISTERED IN 2022

·         The National Crime Records Bureau(NCRB) has released its annual report titled “Crime in India – 2022”. The report shows that a total of 58,24,946 cognisable crimes which includes 35,61,379 Indian Penal Code(IPC) crimes and 22,63,567 Special & Local laws(SLL) crimes were registered in 2022.

·         It shows a decline of 4.5% in registration of cases compared to 2021.

·         The crime rate registered per lakh population has declined from 445.9 in 2021 to 422.2 in 2022.

·         Kolkata (West Bengal) emerged as the safest city in India for the 3rd consecutive year among major metropolis.

 

10.    KENYAN PRESIDENT WILLIAM RUTO’S VISIT TO INDIA

·         India announced USD 250 million Line of Credit (LOC) to Kenya to modernize its agri-sector.

·         India and Kenya have signed 5 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs)  in various sectors such as: sports, education, culture and digital solutions.

·         The Indian Council For Cultural Relations (ICCR) scholarships to be increased from 48 to 80 per year.

11.    LIC BECOMES WORLD’S 4TH LARGEST INSURER BASED ON RESERVE

·         According to S&P Global Market Intelligence’s new ranking “The Worlds Largest Life Insurers, 2023” based on life and accident & health reserves, Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has been named the 4th largest insurer in the world.

·         LIC’s reserves stood at USD 503.7 billion in the fiscal year 2023 (FY23) –  April 2022 to March 2023.

·         LIC is the only Indian company featured on the list.

·         The 2023 ranking is topped by Germany’s Allianz SE with a reserve of USD 750.2 billion followed by China Life Insurance Company Ltd, China (USD 616.90 billion)

·         The list features top 50 companies ranked by 2022 life and accident & health reserves.

·         The United Kingdom(UK) is home to the most companies on the list. 7 companies on the list are headquartered in UK.

 

12.    RBI CANCELS LICENCE OF SHANKARRAO PUJARI BANK & UP’S URBAN CO-OPERATIVE BANK

·         The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has cancelled the license of Shankarrao Pujari Nutan Nagari Sahakari Bank Limited, Ichalkaranji, Kolhapur in Maharashtra, and Urban Co-operative Bank Limited, Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh (UP)

·         The banks does not have adequate capital and earning prospects.

·         It should be noted that on liquidation, every depositor is entitled to receive deposit insurance claim amount upto Rs 5,00,000 from DICGC, subject to DICGC Act, 1961.

·         RBI has imposed monetary penalty on 4 co-operative banks:

·         Rajarshi Shahu Sahakari Bank Ltd., Pune, Maharashtra,1 lakh Penalty.

·         Prathamik Shikshak Sahakari Bank Limited, Satara, Maharashtra, 1 lakh Penalty

·         Patan Co-operative Bank Limited, Mumbai, Maharashtra, 1 lakh Penalty

·         The District Co-operative Central Bank Ltd., Mahabubnagar, Telangana, Rs 10000 Penalty

 

13.    TIME MAGAZINE’S 2023 PERSON OF THE YEAR

·         TIME, the news magazine based in the United States of America (USA), has named the American singer-songwriter Taylor Alison Swift as its 2023 Person of the Year and became the 1st person to be recognised for her achievements in the arts.

·         With this, She became the 1st woman to appear twice on a Person of the Year cover since the nominations began in 1927.

·         Lionel Andrés Messi, Captain of Argentina’s national football team, has been named Time magazine’s Athlete of the Year for 2023.

·         An American entrepreneur Sam Altman, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and co-founder of OpenAI, has been named Time Magazine’s CEO of The Year 2023.

·         American actor and singer, Alex Eugene Newell, was named TIME’s Breakthrough of the Year 2023.

 

14.    NATIONAL AWARDS FOR THE EMPOWERMENT OF DIVYANGJAN

·         On the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2023 (3 December 2023), Draupadi Murmu, President of India,  honoured Prashant Agrawal, President of Narayan Seva Sansthan (NSS) in Udaipur, Rajasthan, with National Awards for the Empowerment of Divyangjan under the category ‘Best Personality- Empowerment of Differently-abled’ .

·         The award recognises his  outstanding work in the field of empowerment of persons with disabilities (PwDs/Divyangjan).

·         A total of 30 awards (21 individuals and 9 institutions) were preseted as a part of National Awards for the Empowerment of Divyangjan 2023.

 

15.    NATIONAL AWARD FOR INNOVATIONS & GOOD PRACTICES IN EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION

·         Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Ministry of Education(MoE) honoured the 65 outstanding district and block education officers across India with the National Awards for Innovations and Good Practices in Educational Administration for the years 2020-21 & 2021-22.

·         A 2-day National Conference on Innovations and Good Practices in Educational Administration was organised by the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) as a prelude to the award ceremony.

·         The awards for district and block-level education officers were instituted by the NIEPA in 2014.

·         The NIEPA was established by the erstwhile Ministry of Human Resource Development(MoHRD), now MoE, Government of India. It became a deemed-to-be university in 2006.

·         The orgin of the institute dates back to 1960 when it was established as the Asian Regional Centre for Educational Planners and Administrators by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

·         Later in 1970, the institute was taken over by the Government of India and was renamed as “National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA)” in 1979.

 

16.    CAMBRIDGE DICTIONARY ‘HALLUCINATE’ AS WORD OF THE YEAR 2023

·         The Cambridge dictionary has chosen “hallucinate” – a verb as its Word of the Year for 2023.

·         The traditional definition of “hallucinate” refers to the experience of seeing, hearing, or feeling things that are not there

·         The new meaning specifically applies to AI systems that generate text, images, or other outputs that are not based on real-world data.

·         This can include things like chatbots that make up stories or image generators that create fictional scenes.

 

17.    ANUMULA REVANTH REDDY SWORN IN AS CM OF TELANGANA

·         Anumula Revanth Reddy, President of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC), sworn in as the Chief Minister (CM) of Telangana.

·         He became the 1st Congress CM of Telangana and the 2nd CM of the State since its formation in 2014.

·         Mallu Bhatti Vikaramarka, Former Leader of Opposition in Telangana Legislative Assembly, took oath as the Deputy CM of Telanga.

·         Telangana Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan administered the oath of office at the Lal Bahadur Shastri Stadium in Hyderabad, Telangana.

·         Telangana Legislative Assembly elections were held on 30th November 2023 to elect 119 member.

·         The Indian National Congress (INC – 64 ) with its ally Communist Party of India (CPI – 1) won a clear majority with 65 seats against the incumbent Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)’s 39 seats.

·         Gaddam Prasad Kumar was appointed as the Speaker of the Telangana Legislative Assembly.

·         10 other Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) took oath as ministers of Telangana.
