1.       NAGASAKI DAY 2026 – AUGUST 9 

·         Nagasaki Day is annually observed across the globe on 9 August to commemorate the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan by the USA in 1945 during World War II (WWII: 1939–1945).

·         2026 marks the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

·         On 9 August 1945, the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) B-29 bomber “Bockscar” dropped the second atomic bomb, “Fat Man,” on Nagasaki, Japan, which was detonated at an altitude of around 1,650 feet after being released from approximately 29,000 feet.

·          Fat Man” was a plutonium-based implosion-type atomic bomb with an explosive force of 21,000 tons of TNT (Trinitrotoluene), weighing over 10,800 pounds (approx. 4,670 kilogram- kg), with a length of 10.8 feet and a diameter of 60 inches.

 


2.       WORLD LION DAY 2026 – AUGUST 10 

·         World Lion Day is annually observed across the globe on 10 August to raise awareness about lions (Panthera leo).

·         World Lion Day was started in 2013 by Big Cat Rescue (BCR), a wildlife sanctuary in Florida, United States of America (USA), dedicated to lion conservation.

·         The initiative was co-founded by Dereck and Beverly Joubert.

 

3.       WORLD BIOFUEL DAY 2026 – AUGUST 10 

·         World Biofuel Day is observed annually across the world on 10 August to raise awareness about biofuels as renewable alternatives to fossil fuels, reduce dependence on conventional fuels, and lower Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.

·         Since 2015, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), Government of India (GoI) has been observing World Biofuel Day.

·         India is the third-largest oil consumer globally after USA and China.

·         The day commemorates Rudolf Christian Karl Diesel, who demonstrated his diesel engine powered by peanut oil (biofuel) on 10 August 1893 in Augsburg, Germany.

 

4.       INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY 2026 – AUGUST 12

·         The United Nations (UN’s) International Youth Day (IYD) is observed annually across the globe on 12 August to recognise the contributions of young people, raise awareness of youth-related issues, and promote their active and equal participation in all areas of society.

·         2026 Theme: “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”.

·         In 1991, the idea for IYD was proposed at the 1st session of the United Nations System’s World Youth Forum in Vienna, Austria.

·         The first IYD was officially observed on 12 August 2000.

 

5.       WORLD ELEPHANT DAY 2026 – AUGUST 12 

·         World Elephant Day is observed annually across the world on 12 August to raise awareness about the conservation and protection of elephants, often known as the ‘Gentle Giants’ of the world.

·         The first World Elephant Day was observed on 12 August 2012 by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation.

·         Elephants are the largest land animals on Earth.

·         Elephants have a 22-month gestation period and usually give birth to one calf every 4–5 years.

 

6.       WORLD ORGAN DONATION DAY 2026 – AUGUST 13

·         World Organ Donation Day is annually observed across the globe on August 13 to commemorate the first successful organ transplant in 1954 .

·         The world’s first successful living-donor kidney transplant was performed in 1954 by American surgeon Dr. Joseph E. Murray and his associates at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital, now known as Brigham and Women’s Hospital, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA.

·         Joseph E. Murray and American Physician E. Donnall Thomas were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1990 for their discoveries concerning organ and cell transplantation in the treatment of human disease.
