·            The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) celebrated its 75th anniversary on 12th November 2021 .

·            The United Nations Charter that came into effect 16th November 1945, created a specialized agency in the fields of education and culture to be named the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization(UNESCO).

·            The initiatives of UNESCO are focused on 5 program areas: education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, and communication and information.

·            There are 6 Indian cities on UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN)

2.       INDIA BECOMES WORLD’S LARGEST RECIPIENT OF REMITTANCES IN 2021:WB REPORT

·            India became the world’s largest recipient of remittances by receiving USD 87bn in 2021. The United States (US) was its biggest source, accounting for over 20% of these funds.

·            India is followed by China, Mexico, the Philippines, and Egypt.

1.       TENURE OF CBI AND ED DIRECTORS EXTENDED FOR UP TO 5 YEARS

·            President Ram Nath Kovind signed two ordinances to extend the tenure of Directors of probe agencies Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) up to five years from current 2 years.

·            As per the ordinances, the central Government can extend the Directors’ tenure of CBI and ED by a year for three consecutive years once they complete their fixed two year term.

·            Current ED Director is Sanjay Kumar Mishra(Set to Retire on November 17, 2021) & Current CBI Director – Subodh Kumar Jaiswal

·            The ED Director is appointed by the central government on the recommendation of a committee chaired by the Central Vigilance Commissioner and members comprising of Vigilance Commissioners, Home Secretary, Secretary DOPT (Department of Personnel and Training) and Revenue Secretary.

·            The Director CBI is selected on the basis of the recommendation of a committee consisting of the Prime Minister, the Chief of Justice of India and the Leader of Opposition.If there is no recognized leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha, then the leader of the single largest opposition party in the Lok Sabha would be a member of that committee.

 

2.       INDIA’S 1ST FISHERIES BUSINESS INCUBATION CENTRE

·            Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (FAHD) Parshottam Rupala launched the India’s first-of-its kind, dedicated business incubator known as LINAC-NCDC Fisheries Business Incubation Centre (LlFlC) in Gurugram, Haryana.

1.       TRILATERAL MARITIME EXERCISE ‘SITMEX-21’

·            The 3rd edition of India, Singapore and Thailand Trilateral Maritime Exercise SITMEX-21 was held in Andaman Sea as a ‘non-contact, at sea only’ exercise in view of COVID-19 restrictions.

·            It is 1,860-sqft museum  co-developed by Food Corporation of India (FCI) and Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museums, Bengaluru (Karnataka)

·            Thanjavur is the cultural capital of Tamil Nadu.

1.       INDIA’S FIRST GRASS CONSERVATORY AT RANIKHET, UTTARAKHAND

·            India’s first ‘grass conservatory’ or ‘germplasm conservation centre’ was inaugurated at Ranikhet in Almora district of Uttarakhand.

·            This conservatory is funded under the Central Government’s CAMPA (Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority) scheme and is developed by the research wing of Uttarakhand Forest Department.

·            Aim is To create awareness about the importance of grass species, promote their conservation, and facilitate research in the field.

2.       CYBER SECURITY CONFERENCE ‘C0C0N’ 2021

·            The 14th edition of Cyber Security ‘c0c0n’, an annual Hacking and Cyber Security Briefing, was inaugurated virtually by Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat

·            Theme  ‘Improvise, Adapt and Overcome’.

·            The conference was conducted by the Kerala police in association with two Non-Profit organisations, Society for the Policing of Cyberspace (POLCYB) and Information Security Research Association (ISRA).

·           The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with support from the European Commission launched the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) at the Group of Twenty (G20) Summit 2021.

·           IMEO is a data-driven, action-focused initiative to catalyse dramatic reduction of methane emissions, starting with the energy sector.

·           Its aim is to slash methane emissions by 30 per cent by 2030.

·         Meghalaya state observed the ‘Wangala’, the festival of 100 Drums Festival.

1.       USA BECOMES THE 101ST MEMBER COUNTRY OF THE ISA AT COP26

·         The United States of America (USA) has become the 101st member of the inter-governmental treaty-based International Solar Alliance (ISA).

·         John Kerry, the US special presidential envoy for climate, has signed the framework agreement and announced its membership at the 26th Conference of Parties (COP26) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which is being held in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom (UK).

 

2.       3RD REGIONAL SECURITY DIALOGUE ON AFGHANISTAN

·         National Security Adviser (NSA) of India, Ajit Doval Chaired the 3rd Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan that was hosted by India in New Delhi.

·         The meeting saw high-level participants from 8 countries, where the “Delhi Declaration” was adopted by the countries to promote terrorism free, inclusive government in Afghanistan.

·         The Declaration was also known as the “Delhi Regional Security Dialogue on Afghanistan of National Security Advisers/Secretaries of Security Councils”.

·         Objective is to instigate a collective effort against spread of Terrorism, Drug trafficking from Afghanistan and for protection of women rights in Afghan.

·         Countries Participated – India, Russia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan. (While Pakistan & China stayed away from the meeting).

1.       FINANCE MINISTRY APPROVES 8.5% RETURN ON PF DEPOSITS FOR FY21

·         The Ministry of Finance approved an 8.5% interest rate on Provident Fund (PF) deposits for 2020-21 (FY21). Now, the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) will credit this interest in accounts of active 60 million beneficiaries.

·         The Central Board of Trustees (CBT) of EPFO is headed by the Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, Ministry of Labour and Employment.

 

2.       UNITED NATIONS CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE (COP 26)

·         The 26th Conference of Parties (COP26) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is being held in Glasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom (UK)

·         Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi Visited the UK to attend the COP26

·         The COP 26 is being hosted by the United Kingdom, in partnership with Italy.

·         At the summit, the PM has set 5 ambitious targets for India to combat climate change.

These 5 targets are:

1.       To increase India’s non-fossil capacity to 500 gigawatts by 2030

2.       To fulfil 50 percent of India’s energy requirements with renewable energy by 2030

3.       To reduce 1 billion tonnes of the total projected carbon emission between now and 2030

4.       To reduce the Indian economy’s carbon intensity to less than 45% by 2030

5.       To achieve the target of net zero emissions by 2070

·         At the COP26, PM launched a programme IRIS (Infrastructure for the Resilient Island States), a key India-led initiative to boost infrastructure in small island nations.

·         PM Modi and his British counterpart Boris Johnson jointly launched the world’s 1st ‘green Grids’ Initiative, the One Sun One World One Grid (GGI-OSOWOG) on the sidelines of the COP26 summit.

·         A Global methane pledge was launched to make a 30 percent reduction in global methane emissions from 2020 levels by 2030. The pledge is jointly led by the United States and the European Union. So far, over 90 countries have signed the pledge.

·         The pledge to stop and reverse deforestation by 2030 (not a formal agreement) was also made in the same manner. Over 100 countries including the U.S., China and Brazil have signed on to it.

 

3.       UNSC ADOPTED RESOLUTION ON ‘PROTECTING EDUCATION FROM CONFLICT’

·         The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) adopted the first of its kind resolution (resolution 2601) on protecting schools and civilians connected with schools including children and teachers during armed conflict.

·         The resolution condems the attacks against schools, children and teachers and urges the conflict parties to safeguard the right to education.

 

4.       2020’S TENZING NORGAY NATIONAL ADVENTURE AWARD

·         Mountaineer Priyanka Mohite was selected by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports for the prestigious ‘Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award 2020’ for outstanding contribution in the field of land adventure.

·         She scaled the world’s highest peak Mt Everest, Mt Lhotse and Mt.Makalu.

·         She is the 1st Indian woman to climb Mt Annapurna, the 10th highest mountain peak in the world.

·         In 2018, Shivangi Pathak, 16-year-old, became the youngest Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest.

·         Tenzing Norgay is regarded as the 1st person to scale Mount Everest.

·         It is the highest National award in the field of adventure on land, sea and air, which is equivalent to the Arjuna Award.

 

5.       OXFORD DICTIONARY’S WORD OF THE YEAR 2021 – ‘VAX’ 

·         ‘Vax’ has been chosen as the Word of the Year for 2021 by the Oxford English Dictionary (OED).

·         In 2021, Vax which inturn refers to ‘Vaccine’ or ‘Vaccination’ repeatedly appeared in the news, and other written media more than any other word.

·         ‘Lockdown’ was selected as the Collins Word of the Year for 2020
